Occupant ENGAGEMENTI S I O N For many landlords, bringing tenants together and giving them a say in building operations is daunting, but for Cadillac Fairview, tenants are key to driving lasting, meaningful change.

True engagement happens when all building occupants - tenants, their employees, and the landlord - behave in a way that realizes environmental, social, and wellness goals as a result of purposeful action. This is why in 2010, TDC deployed an Occupant Engagement Program to align the sustainability and wellbeing of the entire TDC community, and promote behavioural actions that drive results.

The Occupant Engagement Program involves a host of tools, communications, and events that educate and engage occupants in sustainable and wellness initiatives, and encourage occupants to adopt specific behaviours that contribute to the sustainability and wellbeing of the TDC community.

GREEN COUNCIL A key component of the Occupant Engagement Program is the Green Council which is made up of tenant representatives who act as the advisory group for the program as well as a conduit to and representative of the larger tenant body.

The Green Council’s Mission is to:

“Act as the catalyst for change to sustainable green practices and green consciousness at TDC working towards a vision for a future that is reliable, responsive, and environmentally sustainable every day.”

Current Green Council Members include:

The Green Council meets quarterly to discuss tenants’ sustainability goals which help shape future campaigns and determine topics to focus on as part of the Occupant Engagement Program. Essentially, the Green Council acts as the voice of the tenants, ensuring Cadillac Fairview provides the TDC community with the tools and resources they need to help achieve their sustainable goals and objectives. To encourage participation, every initiative, tool, and communication is designed so that it can be easily and effortlessly implemented by tenants within their organizations.

A Meditation Lunch n’ Learn was held where attendees learned the basics of meditation and the benefits of a daily meditation practice.

An Art Workshop was held after work where attendees were given the option to follow a guided painting or exercise creativity by creating their own masterpiece.

A Health Fair was held with 19 stations, featuring various wellness assessments and opportunities to talk with health professionals.

A Happiness & Gratitude Toolkit included resources to help educate occupants on gratitude and support happiness.

A Brain Training Toolkit included activities and resources to encourage brain exercise and promote brain health and cognitive function.

HEALTH & WELLNESS 301

The Health & Wellness 301 Campaign was the third Campaign to be rolled out at TDC that focused on enhancing the health and wellbeing of building occupants. The Campaign was designed to build on behaviours and initiatives promoted in the previous two Health & Wellness Campaigns. The purpose of the Campaign was to increase employee engagement, support employee mental wellness, facilitate discussions around gratitude and self-care in the workplace, and increase employee awareness of their wellbeing.

The Health & Wellness 301 Campaign was rolled out in three bundles from February to October 2017. Each bundle included three initiatives: a landlord initiative, tenant initiative, and occupant behaviour. The landlord initiatives were undertaken by TDC and were implemented to align with the tenant initiatives. Tenant initiatives were developed in partnership with the Green Council and were designed to support organizations in building a workplace that fosters employee health and wellbeing. To maximize the impact of the landlord and tenant initiatives, building occupants were encouraged to incorporate health and wellness related behaviours into their daily routines.

Landlord INITIATIVESMEDITATION LUNCH N’ LEARN | Landlord InitiativeOur busy day-to-day lives can trigger our minds to race with thoughts and emotions, making it difficult to fully relax. With a myriad of proven benefits, meditation can offer our minds a reprieve from the mental chatter. To support occupants in the practice of meditation, TDC partnered with Personal Freedom and Success Coach Josie Smith of the Toronto Athletic Club to host an interactive lunch n’ learn. The lunch n’ learn took attendees through a guided meditation, and explained how meditation can help reduce stress, anxiety, and improve cognition.

Space was limited to 100 people per session. Back-to-back sessions were held to accommodate the high demand.

The lunch n’ learn was open to all skill-levels, and as such, the audience was made up of both experienced meditators and those who were exposed to meditation for the first time. The lunch n’ learn was well-received by all.

I came away [from the lunch n’ learn] a little more relaxed and positive, by being reminded of the benefits of slowing

down sometimes.

As life can be such a rat race sometimes... we forget the toll it takes on us at every turn. We forget to stop and smell the roses, but this session was one such time when I felt that

the world stopped, even if for a little while.

ART WORKSHOP | Landlord InitiativeApart from being a fun creative outlet, painting helps maintain a strong mind, relieves stress, and is proven to improve concentration. Cadillac Fairview retained an art instructor from PaintNite to provide TDC occupants with a night of inspiration and the opportunity to create a beautiful piece of art.

Over 60 occupants participated in the event that was held in June at the Design Exchange. While many attendees followed along with the guided painting of a natural landscape, some chose to exercise their creativity and create their own masterpiece. At the end of the evening, all attendees took home a unique piece of artwork.

HEALTH FAIR | Landlord Initiative

In September, TDC partnered with the Toronto Athletic Club and several other tenants including Sutherland-Chan Clinic Inc., The Running Room, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Nutrition House to host a two-hour Health Fair. With over 250 attendees, the Health Fair featured 19 health and wellness booths that occupants could visit to speak with health care professionals, participate in health assessments, and receive various complementary treatments. Attendees were encouraged to record the results of their assessments at each booth to provide a snapshot of their overall health and learn ways to improve their wellness.

Attendees had the chance to enter a draw for the chance to win several prizes, including lunch for two at Stratus Restaurant, three $50 CF SHOP! Cards, a private yoga or pilates session, and a therapeutic massage at the Toronto Athletic Club.

HAPPINESS & GRATITUDE TOOLKIT | Tenant InitiativeCultivating gratitude by taking time every day to focus on all that you have is a simple way to improve mental wellness, and is associated with enhanced empathy and improved self-esteem.

Incorporating gratitude into your daily routine is a small act that can result in significant changes. In fact, research has shown that those who write down one thing they are grateful for every day report being 25% happier than those who don’t.

In an effort to encourage occupants to adopt the behaviour of practicing daily gratitude, a toolkit was distributed containing the following resources:

• Information on the Practice & Benefits of Gratitude• Tips for communicating gratitude• Weekly Gratitude Journal Template• Simple Ways to Practice Gratitude’ Communication

Torys LLP posted the communication in office common areas, BirchHill Equity Partners posted the communication in the lunchroom, and KingSett Capital distributed the toolkit to employees electronically.

BRAIN TRAINING TOOLKIT | Tenant InitiativeBrains needs exercise just like every other muscle in the body. The more it’s used, the stronger it gets. Just as physical exercise helps build and retain muscle, following a lifestyle that supports brain health and performing regular brain exercises increases cognitive function. In order to support and promote brain training, TDC distributed a toolkit that provided information on the importance of brain training and the ways in which occupants can train their brain. The toolkit contained the following tools and resources:

• Benefits of Brain Exercise• Tips to Improve Brain Health• Recommended Activities• Suggested Brain Training Resources• Riddles, Games, and Puzzles

BDO Canada LLP distributed the Brain Training activities and TD, Dentons and KingSett Capital distributed the Brain Training toolkit electronically.

MENTAL HEALTH TOOLKIT | Tenant Initiative

Mental health can be a sensitive subject in the workplace even though roughly 500,000 Canadians will miss work this week because of a mental health issue. By proactively addressing mental health in the workplace, and facilitating discussions around mental wellness, organizations can improve employee wellbeing, increase morale, and reduce absenteeism. In an effort to help occupants understand mental health and better support employees and colleagues, a toolkit was distributed containing the following tools and resources:

• Introduction to Mental Health & Tips for Understanding Mental Health• Strategies to Support Colleagues• Strategies to Improve Personal Mental Wellbeing• Online Resources

KingSett Capital distributed the Mental Health toolkit electronically.

Brain Training Activity included in the Brain Training Toolkit that challenges the player to spot the differences between two similar images.

Occupant BEHAVIOURS The goal of the Health & Wellness Campaigns is to create a workplace community that supports the wellbeing of occupants. In addition to landlord and tenant initiatives, occupant behaviours were also promoted to encourage simple healthy actions. Behavioural communications were distributed to tenants for posting in their tenancies, and Cadillac Fairview posted the communications in the building lobby areas and on elevator screens. Communications included:

EVERY DAY WRITE DOWN 3 THINGS YOU’RE GRATEFUL FOR Practicing gratitude is proven to enhance our outlook on life. Occupants were encouraged to practice gratitude by writing down three things they are grateful for every day.

COMPLETE ONE PUZZLE OR WORD CHALLENGE EVERY DAY Games like crosswords and sudoku offer a great form of brain exercise. Occupants were encouraged to keep their brain in shape by completing one puzzle or word challenge every day.

PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN AND BE PRESENT While technology is an important part of our daily lives, it is also important to take time to be present. Occupants are encouraged to disconnect from their electronics to reconnect with the people and environment that surround them.

Several organizations including Birch Hill, Dentons, Torys, TD, Fogler Rubinoff, and BDO Canada LLP posted the

communications in their office areas and on their intranet sites.

Campaign SUMMARYHEALTH & WELLNESS The Health & Wellness 301 Campaign was designed to provide TDC occupants with opportunities to increase employee engagement, support employee mental wellness, facilitate discussions around gratitude and self-care in the workplace, and increase employee awareness of their wellbeing.

While it is difficult to quantitatively measure the positive impact that these initiatives have had on the health and wellbeing of the TDC community specifically, the effectiveness of the campaign can be measured by the level of engagement. To recap, below are a few highlights of the Health & Wellness 301 Campaign:

200 occupants attended a Lunch n’ Learn led by a Personal Freedom and Success Coach from the Toronto

Athletic Club to learn about meditation, and participate in a guided group meditation.

Over 60 occupants attended an Art Workshop held in the Design Exchange, led by artists from PaintNite where they created their own masterpieces or followed along with a

guided painting.

Over 250 occupants attended a Health Fair featuring 19 different booths with health professionals offering various

assessments and complementary wellness services to provide occupants with the chance to learn more about

their health.

Three comprehensive toolkits were distributed to the TDC community addressing important health and

wellness topics, including Happiness & Gratitude, Brain Training, and Mental Health. These toolkits contained

information for both tenants and occupants, and provided opportunities to enhance programs and facilitate

discussions in tenant organizations.
