ACHIEVEMENTS

CHALLENGES

READO with the support of UNFPA has provided BEmONC services essential to reduce the maternal mortality rate and the beneficiaries have accessed and benefited from free of charge essential primary and secondary health care services including provision of daily consultation and outpatient services. Also, READO has provided comprehensive GBV services, Clinical Management of Rape (CMR), advocacy, community mobilizations and engagement to promote the rights of women and adolescent girls and also eliminating harmful practices affecting the women in Hudur Bakol region.

READO in Hudur hospital provided clean and save delivery and care services to 472 vulnerable pregnant women who arrived at the hospital after mobilizations: of these deliveries, 444 were normal deliveries attended by skilled/qualifiedmidwives while 28 cases were complicated deliveries attended by the medical doctors. The hospital also referred 19 complicated cases out of the hospital for Caesariansection services. Furthermore, READO team have continued to provide clinical management for the obstetric complications and PMTCT/STI services to pregnant and lactating women as part of antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) services.

Through out the reporting period, there were GBV and maternal health activity trainings held in the region. There were two training sessions one for staff induction and the other for community sensitization trainings between. The community and the medical staff were trained on GBV and reproductive health to strengthen the relationship between the communities and the staff in the health facilities and encourage the community to build the referral system. The entire community was fully engaged through the project and very receptive of the project activities. The health staff with the support of the community members from the IDPs and the host community mobilized 2,427 people to increase advocacy and community engagement to promote the reproductive health and rights of woman and adolescent girls and to eliminate the harmful practice affecting the maternal health.

Familiy Planing(FP)

The family planning and birth spacing methods were a very sensitive topic of discussion and the majority of the mothers believed that the birth spacing bills can cause future problem and in the end infertility. However, repetitive FP awareness/consultations conducted by UNFPA/READO staff has seen the number of women acception family planning metods rise gradualy within the reporting perion. In this regard, 67 beneficiaries received FP in different method for Hudur General Hospital with the most number 61 of them using the Natural FP method.

Limited Transport

Hudur district is currently under siege of AS(Al Shabab) causing a big problem of inaccessibility within Hudur, consequently this means there is no transportation for referral cases. As a result of road blockages that are imposed by AS in HudurDistrict, the community have been suffering in desperate health situations due to lack of properly functioning health facilities. In particular maternal health problems have increased due to complications regarding pregnancy. Additionaly, in Hudur there is a shortage of ambulance services and this caused significant delay to the emergency cases and an increase maternal mortality risk in and outside the districts.

COVID-19

A new pandemic is upon us and it is growing at an unprecedented rate within Somalia. In response to this, we have collaborated with the Ministry of Health of the Federal Government and MoH-SWS conducted on a voluntary basis, short sensitization sessions to a group of UNFPA/READO supported midwives and voluntary community mobilizers in Hudur district on COVID-19 providing awareness sessions on social distancing and increased hygiene practices including hand washing.

MoH-SWS and READO in Hudur provided a short training sessions to these UNFPA/READO supported midwives and voluntary community mobilizers who later on facilitated a community mass campaign by volunteers transmitting COVID-19 preventive massages through media (Radio) and using mobile public address systems to emphasize the message on the streets and villages on social distancing and avoiding public gatherings and increased hygiene practices. This one week long COVID-19 awareness campaign in March by UNFPA/READO midwives and voluntary community mobilizers trained by READO/MOH has positively impacted knowledge and attitudes about COVID-19 at community and IDP level and enabled community to implement and practical the instructions and advice from the mobilization team.
