SeasonalAffectiveDisorder,withtheappropriateacronymofSAD,isatypeofdepressionthatoccursatthesametimeeveryyear.Symptomstypicallystartinthefallandcontinuethroughthewintermonths,sappingtheenergyofthoseafflictedandputtingtheminnegativemoods.WhilewintersalongtheNorthCarolinacoastarerelativelymild,residentsherearejustassusceptibletoSAD,saidDr.BartonLewis,apsychiatristofCapeLookoutPsychiatry.“It’sabouttheintensityofsunlight,notthetemperature,”Dr.Lewissaid.
Symptoms of SAD include depression, hopelessness, anxiety, social withdrawal, oversleeping, weight gain and difficulty concentrating and processing information.
It’snormaltofeeldownonsomedays,especiallyduringthewinter,whenitseemsweoftenspendthefewprecioushoursofdaylightinanoffice;however,ifthose“winterblues”keepyoudownfordaysatatimeandyoucan’tseemtogetmotivatedtodoactivitiesyounormallyenjoy,youshouldseeadoctor,accordingtothewebsitemayoclinic.org.Thisisparticularlyimportantifyounoticethat
yoursleeppatternsandappetitehavechangedorifyoufeelhopeless,thinkaboutsuicide,orfindyourselfturningtoalcoholforcomfortorrelaxation.
CausesThespecificcauseofSADisstill
unknown,thoughit’slikelyaconcoctionofgenetics,ageandyourbody’snaturalchemicalmakeup.Afewspecificfactorsthatmaycomeintoplayinclude:
Biological Clock–Thereducedlevelofsunlightinthefallandwintermaydisruptyourbody’sclock,whichletsyouknowwhenyoushouldsleeporbeawake.
Melatonin–Thechangeinseasoncanaffectyourmelatoninlevels,whichplayaroleinsleeppatternsandmood.Tak-ingmelatoninsupplementsmaybeanoption.
Serotonin–Adropinserotonin,abrainchemicalthatalsoaffectsmood,mightplayarole.Reducedsunlightcancauseadropinserotonin,perhapsleadingtodepression.
TreatmentThechangeinlightpatternshasa
directeffectonpeoplewithSAD,andaccordingtotheNationalAllianceofMentalIllness,patientslivingatdifferentlatitudesnotethattheirwinterdepressionsarelongerandmoreprofoundthefarthernorththeylive.Asaresult,oneofthemosteffectivetreatmentsislighttherapy.Lightboxesareavailablecommerciallyandusefluorescentlightsthatarebrighterthanindoorlightsbutnotasbrightassunlight.Theuserwillplacethelightboxataspecifieddistanceonadeskanduseittoread,eatbreakfastorworkatacomputer.
“Itsoundshokeybutitworks,”Dr.Lewissaid.Itmaytakeaslittleasthreetofivedaysoruptotwoweeksbeforethepatientrespondstothetherapy;however,thepracticeneedstocontinueevenifmoodimproves,asstoppingwilllikelycausearelapsebackintodepression.
Antidepressantscanalsoeffectivelytreatepisodesofdepression.Improvementmaykickinassoonasaweek,orasmanyaseightweeks.Medicationcanbeusedinconductionwithlighttherapy.
Counselingmayalsohelptreatment.Optionsincludeindividualcounseling,groupcounselingandfamilytherapy.ThosesessionswillhelpdetailwaystohandlethesymptomsofSADandhowtopreventfuturedepressiveepisodes.
Inaddition,exercisingmaygiveyouaboost.Beingactiveduringthedaytime,especiallyfirstthinginthemorning,mayhelpyouhavemoreenergyandfeellessdepressed.
Theweatheroutsidemaybefrightful,butyoudon’thavetofeelthesame.

“HealthcarereformhasbeenamajorfocalpointfortheAMAandCongressformostofthisyear,andastheyeardrawstoaclosewearecloserthanevertoachievinghealthcarelegislationthatwillbenefitallAmericans,”saysAMAPresidentDr.J.JamesRohack.“Weneedreformthatbuildsonwhatworksinoursystemandfixeswhatdoesn’t,andwearecommittedtostayinginvolvedintheprocesstoimprovethefinallegislationforpatientsandphysicians.”

Therearetwotypesofdiabetes,type1andtype2.AsdescribedbytheADA,intype1,thebodydoesnotproduce
insulin,ahormonewhichisneededtoconvertsugar,starchesandotherfoodintoenergyforthebody.Whenyoueatfood,thebodybreaksdownallofthesugarsandstarchintoglu-cose,whichisthebody’sbasicfuel.Insulintakesthesugarfromthebloodintothecells.Whenglucosebuildsupinthebloodinsteadofgoingintothecells,itcanleadtocomplica-tions,includingkidneydamage,blindnessandnervedamage,especiallyinthelegs.
Intype2diabetes,whichismuchmorecommon,eitherthebodydoesn’tproduceenoughinsulinorthecellsignoretheinsulin.Asaresult,dietandexercisearecrucialtohealth,andmanywithdiabetesmustalsotakeinsulin.
Aswithmostthings,moderationisthekey.“Asweknow,everybody’sgoingtoeatsomething,butit’showmuchofitpeopleeatthatgetsthemintotrouble,”saidCareyO’Reilly,aregistereddieticianinCarteretCounty.
Askedforasecondopinion,MaryTuitt,aregistereddieti-cianinNewBern,readilyagreed.“ThebigthingItellpeopleistowatchportionsizes,”shesaid.“Trytodolittletastesofthings,notoverdoanythingtoomuch.”Sherecommendedfillinguphalfoftheplatewithvegetables,whichwon’thaveadrasticeffectonbloodsugarlevels.Shealsosuggestedthatthosewithdiabeteskeeparecordofwhattheyhaveeaten.“Justwritingthingsdownwillhelpyoukeeptrackofallthecookiesandcandycanesthatyoueatthroughouttheday,”shesaid.
Also,itcanbeagoodideatohavealittlesomethingtoeatbeforeapartysoyouaren’tfamishedwhenyouarrive,readytodiveintothenearestbowlofpotatochips.And,ifyoudrink,remembertoeatsomethingfirsttopreventlowbloodglucoselevelslater.Keepittonomorethanonedrinkforwomenandtwodrinksformen.Ifyoudooverindulge,makesuretogetbackontrackthenextday,includingextraexercise.

Datarecentlypresentedataconfer-enceheldbytheAmericanAssociationforCancerResearchrevealedthatcoffeemayactuallycuttheriskofdevelopinglethalandadvancedprostatecancer.
“Coffeehaseffectsoninsulinandglu-cosemetabolismaswellassexhormonelevels,allofwhichplayaroleinprostatecancer,”saidDr.KathrynWilson,apostdoctoralfellowoftheChanningLaboratoryatHarvardMedicalSchoolandtheHarvardSchoolofPublicHealth.
Wilsonandhercolleaguesfoundthatmenwhodrankthemostcoffeeinastudyhada60percentlowerriskofaggressiveprostatecancerthanmenwhodidn’tdrinkanycoffee.
However,caffeine,thecomponentmostidentifiedwithcoffee,isnotthekeyfactorinthisassociation,accordingtoWilson,asmenwhodrankdecaf-feinatedcoffeealsohadareducedrisk.Infact,researchersareunsurewhichcomponentsofthebeveragearemostimportant,ascoffeecontainsmanybio-logicallyactivecompoundslikeantioxi-dantsandminerals.
Whileresearchersarecertainlyopti-misticaboutthefindings,theonlythingtheyseemconfidentinsayingisthatmorestudiesareneeded,andthatcoffeeatleastdoesn’tdamageyourprostate.
Anyway,researchersseethisasaposi-tivestepinthestudyofcancer.“Veryfewlifestylefactorshavebeenconsis-tentlyassociatedwithprostatecancerrisk,especiallywithriskofaggressivedisease,soitwouldbeveryexcitingiftheassociationisconfirmedinotherstudies,”saidWilson.

Theeffectsofsoyarethoughttobeduetosubstancescalledisofla-vones,whicharesometimescalledplantestrogensbecausetheymimicestrogenproducedinhumansandanimals.Theout-comeofthestudygoesagainstthepreviouslyconceivednotionthattheisoflavonesinsoywereactuallybadforwomenwithbreastcancer.
Inthestudy,whichisthelargestonthesubjectcarriedoutsofar,womenages20to75withdiagnosesofbreastcancerbetween2002and2006wererecruitedandresearcherscollecteddataovertime,suchastheirdiseaseprogression,treatmentandlifestyleexposures.Patientsinthegroupwiththehighestintakeofsoyproteinhada29percentlowerriskofdeathduringthestudyperiod,anda32percentlowerriskofbreastcancerrecurrencecomparedtothepatientswiththelowestintake.
“Thisstudysuggeststhatmoderatesoyfoodintakeissafeandpotentiallybeneficialforwomenwithbreastcan-cer,”theresearcherswrite.
No Changes in Mammography Screenings
InNovemberof2009,afederaladvi-sorypanelchangeditspreviousguide-linesonbreastcancerscreening.Shortlythereafter,apoliticalfirestormsweptacrossthenation.
TheUSPreventiveServicesTaskForce(USPSTF),apanelofmedicalprofessionalsthatreceivesfederalfund-ing,altereditspreviousrecommenda-tionthatallwomenovertheageof40receivemammographyscreeningonanannualbasis.Itinsteadrecommendedthatsuchadecisionforwomenbetweentheagesof40and50shouldbeanindividualoneandtakepatientcontextintoaccount.
“Sowhatdoesthismeanforwomenintheir40s?Youshouldtalktoyourdoctorandmakeaninformeddecisionaboutwhethermammographyisrightforyoubasedonyourfamilyhis-
tory,generalhealthandpersonalvalues,”saidDr.DiannaPetitti,vicechairmanofthepanel,inapressrelease.
Inaddition,thepanelrecom-mendedthatwomenbetweentheagesof50and74receivescreen-ingseverytwoyears,ratherthanannually,
andadviseddoctorstostopteachingbreastself-exami-
nation.Inthepanel’ssup-
portingarticle,itstatedthatwhilethereisasmall
reductioninfatalitywithannualscreeningstartingat40,screen-ingbiannuallyat50reducesthenumberoffalsepositivesby50percentandcutsdownonunnecessarybiopsiesandover-treatment.
Theserecommendationsnotonlywentagainstwhatthepanelpreviouslyadvised,butwhatmostothergroupsadvise,includingtheAmericanCancerSociety(ACS).

i fyou’relikemostpeople,bythetimemid-JanuaryrollsaroundthehopeofkeepingNewYear’sresolutionshas
beenreplacedbytheembarrassmentofhavingalreadybrokenpromisesthatarelessthanamonthold.Andastheyeargoeson,thechancesofkeepingthatresolutionstarttodropevenfurther.
Thatpromisetogotothegymeverydaydwindlestothreedaysaweek,thentwodaysaweek,beforefallinginto“wheneverIcanmakeit”territory.Dietandweightlossresolutionsareamongthemostcommon,yearafteryear,whichsaysalotaboutwhatkindofresultspeoplearegettingfromthepromisestheymaketothemselves.
Butit’snevertoolatetogetbacktoresolutions;youjusthavetoberealisticaboutthegoalsyou’retryingtoset.Thinkofitthisway:wouldyourathergiveupandwaitawholeyeartomaketheresolutionagain,orsetanewgoalforMonday,orthefirstofnextmonth?Thatwayit’sstillreachableandyou’rebackontrackbecauseultimately,yourbodydoesn’tcarewhattimeofyearitis,onlythatit’shealthy.
Theproblemwithsomanyresolutionsisthatthey’resimplytoostrenuous,toounforgivingandjustplainunrealistic.Wedon’tbecomesuperhumanmastersofwillpowerwiththeturningoftheyear,nordoourbusyscheduleschange.Thebest,mosteffectiveresolutions,especiallyforweightloss,aretheonesthatfitinwiththeliveswe’realreadyliving.
Resolutionsforweightlossandthoseforeatingbettercaneasilygohandinhand.Onekeytoapositive,effectiveplanforcarryingouttheseresolutionsistonotviewfoodastheenemy-or,atleast,notallfood.Asafirststep,starttakinga
good,hardlookattheingredientlistonfoodsthatyoubuy.
Youshouldalsobehonestwithyourselfaboutyoureatinghabits.Ifyou’reaha-bitualsnackerinthemid-afternoon,ownuptoit.Next,armedwiththatknowl-edge,shopsmartandstockbetter-for-youoptionsforyoursnacks.Manypeoplestartingoutonneweatingregimensbuyproductsthatsound“healthy,”butdon’tsatisfycravingsandcanleadtotoomuchsnacking.
Lookforproductsthatyouknowyoulike,butfindversionsthatincorporatenaturalingredientsorofferlowerfatop-tions.Forexample,ifyoucravepotatochips,CapeCodPotatoChipsareagoodoption.Theingredientlistontheir40percentreducedfatkettle-cookedchipsisrefreshinglysimple:potatoes,canolaoilandsalt.

CarolinaEastHealthSystemannouncedinOctoberthatitwasaddingtheVarianMedicalSystemsClinacIXwithanonboardimagingsystemtoitslifesavingradiationtherapycancertreatmenttechnologies.TheOn-BoardImagermakesitpossiblefordoc-torstoofferpatientsimage-guidedradio-therapy(IGRT),anextremelypreciseformoftreatmentthatutilizesmultipleimagingandmotionmanagementtechniquesforultra-accuratetumortargeting.
“Thisstate-of-the-arttechnologywillenableustotreatpatientswiththemostadvancedradiotherapytechniques,usingthemostclinicallyefficientprocessesavailable,”saidRickFisher,CarolinaEast’sdirectorofimaging.“Itprovidesuswithtremendousversatilityandprecisionforcustomizingtreatmentsaccordingtothespecificsofeachpatient’scase.

T ohisowners,Moby,a4-year-oldAustralianShepherd,wasaveryhealthy,sprydog,sowhenhisveter-
inariantoldthemthatbeneathhisthick,reddish-browncoathehadaweightproblem,theywereabitshocked.
Apparently,allthatbabyfoodlickedoffthefloor,andthelackofactivitythatcamewiththetwotoddlerswhohadrecentlyjoinedthefamily,addedabout10extrapoundsonanormally65-pounddog.ThegoodnewsistheveterinarianwasabletoputMobyonaprogramofdietandexercise,andhewasbackinperfectshapewithinayear.
Studiesshowthatpetobesityisanepidemicinthiscountry.Accordingtoa2005study,approximately35percentofAmericandogsandcatsareobeseoroverweight,andsomeveterinariansreportthattheyseeevenhigherpercent-agesnow.

feelingofonenesswiththeworld.Weexperienceyogaatitsbestwhentheposeissteady,thebreath
isdeepandeven,andthemindisatease.Wethentakethissamesteadinessandeaseofmindintoourlivesonadailybasis.Inyoga,ourpracticegrowsthroughsettingintentions.Wemaysetanintentionforourdailyyogapracticetobeawareofourbreath.Wemayalsosetlongertermintentions,suchastobemindfulofouractionsastohowtheyaffectothers.
Itisthroughthepowerofintentionthatmanyofthesechangesoccurthroughthepracticeofyoga.Yogaisnotagoal;wehavenotachievedperfectionwhenwedoaperfectdownwardfacingdog.Thepracticeofyogaencouragesustolookwithinandnoticeourbreathasweholdthepose.Isthebreathsteadyandeven?Whatisourmentalstatewhileholdingthepose?Areweatease,orisourmindturbulentandunsteady?
Anintentiondiffersfromaresolution.Anintentioninvolvesaconstantstateofmindfulnessthatbringstheintendedoutcometofruition.Thisdiffersfromaresolutioninthataresolutionmightstate“Iamgoingtolose20pounds.”Whenourweighthasdroppedonlyonepoundaftertwoweeksandweonlymakeittothegymthreedaysinthetwoweeks,wefeelasifwe’vealreadyfailedandwegiveup.Withtheyogicpracticeofsettinganintention,onemaysetanintentiontoliveinamorehealthfullifestyleinthecomingyear.Whenwebringthisintentiontominddaily,itinformsourchoicesinselectingfoodsandwebecomemorephysicallyactive,knowingweneedtoparticipateindailyphysicalactivity.Theintentionhelpsdevelopaconstantstateofmindfulnessthatleadstolastingchangesinone’shabitsandthedesiredresult.

economyisbecomingmoreglobalandhealthissuesareagrowingconcerntomany. Asaresult,stateandfederalpoliti-ciansimplementedorareintheprocessofaddressinganumberoflaws,insomecasesastheresultofnewinformation,inotherstheresultofashiftingpercep-tion.Belowisasynopsisofsomeofthewaysourworldischanging.
Breathe Easy Statelegislators,tothechagrinofsome,succeededinpassingatobaccobanforcingsmokersoutofrestaurantsandbarswhentheywanttolightup.NorthCarolinaisnowoneofthemorethan30statesthathavesuchalaw;however,thisstate’sbanisparticularlynoteworthyasNorthCarolinaisthe
leadingproduceroftobaccointhecountry.
Thelawauthorizesfinesofupto$50forpeoplewho
smokeafterbeingaskedtostop,andupto$200formanagersofestablishmentswho
havetwicebeenwarnedtoenforcethelaw.Supporterssay
itwillprotectpeoplefromthead-versehealtheffectsofsecond-handsmoke,whichaccordingtotheU.S.SurgeonGeneral,isrespon-sibleforover50,000deathsinthenationannually.Criticsofthebansayitinfringesonpersonalrights,aswellthoseof

Thelawcomesontheheelsofseveralhighprofileaccidentsinvolvingtextmessagingandfatalities,aswellasastartlingreportfromtheVirginiaTechTransportationInstitutewhichfoundthatwhendriverstexted,theircollisionriskwas23timesgreaterthanwhennottexting–farsurpassingthedangersofotherdrivingdistractions.Thestudyalsodiscoveredthatinthemomentsbe-foreacrashornearcrash,driverstypi-callyspend4.6secondswiththeireyesofftheroadtexting–longenoughforavehicleoperatingathighwayspeedstotravelthelengthofafootballfield. Whilesomeinthefederalgovern-mentarepushingforanationwideban,PresidentBarackObamahasalreadytakensomeaction,banningallfederalemployeesfromtextingwhiledrivinginagovernment-ownedvehicleorusingagovernment-ownedcellphonewhiledriving. AmongthehighprofilecrashesinvolvingtextmessagingwasatrainaccidentinCaliforniathatkilled25passengers.Thedriverofthetrainwasapparentlytextingshortlybeforethecrash.
Ban the Bottle Ontheenvironmentalend,thestateenactedalawinOctoberof2009ban-ningplasticbottles,motoroilfiltersandwoodenpalletsfromlandfills.Instead,theDepartmentofEnviron-mentalandNaturalResourceswantstoseerecyclingprogramsboostedand
isencouragingbusinessesthatgener-ateahighquantityofthoseproductstodoso.Enforcementofthedisposalbanswillchieflybeappliedatdisposalfacilities,suchaslandfillsandtransferstations,andisunlikelytotakeplaceatindividualbusinesses. ThenewlawcoincideswithClearPathRecycling,partlyownedbyShawIndustriesGroup,creatingthelargestPETrecyclingplantinthecountryinNorthCarolina.PET(polyethyl-eneterephthalate)isidentifiedbythenumber“1”insidearecyclingsymbolandistheplasticofchoiceformostsodaandwaterbottles.Theproductcanberecycledintopolyesterandusedforgoodssuchascarpets,whichShaw’smanufactures.
