The FHSC at Hull offers a range of postgraduate programmeswhich are designed to meet the professional and personaldevelopmental needs of health and social care staff. Whetheryou enrol for a single module as part of our ProfessionalDevelopment Qualification Scheme (PDQS), a PostgraduateCertificate, a Postgraduate Diploma or a full Masters degree,our aim is to provide a learning experience which isstimulating, challenging and above all relevant to yourprofessional needs in the modern workplace.

Our postgraduate students enter a rich educational environmentin which we employ a wide range of learning and teachingapproaches, including use of eBridge, our virtual learningenvironment. Students’ professional knowledge is always valued,and they are active participants in learning.

Our postgraduate programmes are run by staff with leading-edgeprofessional and theoretical knowledge. Most programmes can betaken full-time or part-time. The majority of applicants have agood first degree, but we also welcome applications from non-graduates with appropriate professional experience or anappropriate portfolio of learning accredited through APL.

The MSc programmes are designed to develop skills in criticalthinking and focus on a number of specialist areas that have beenidentified as core to the needs of modern health and social carepractice.

Apart from these Masters programmes, we offer a range ofPostgraduate Certificates. These are awarded on successfulcompletion of programmes containing three postgraduatemodules (60 credits). Examples of these would include the PGCertin Knowledge Transfer, a unique programme which exploresknowledge transfer in the public sector; the PGCert in PractitionerResearch, which develops students’ skills in reviewing theliterature and applying research to practice; the PGCert PracticeTeacher, which is primarily designed for community nurses withspecialist or advanced qualifications (SPQ, SCPHN or ANP) whowish to become Practice Teachers, but is equally available tohealth care professionals in advanced roles with a remit forteaching, learning and assessing in the workplace; and thePGCert in Community Nursing, which is one of our routes togaining a qualification as a Specialist Community Nurse orregistering as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

The strategic health authority supports the post-registrationeducation required by a variety of service providers which isidentified through its commissioning groups, partnershipmeetings and workforce-planning arrangements. Theseprogrammes are free at the point of delivery to students who workwithin the North and East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshireregions in the NHS / primary care trusts, the Ambulance Service,NHS Direct, hospices or the prison service, supported by theirNHS and social care managers. All students who are eligible tostudy at postgraduate level may access the portfolio throughflexible fee-paying methods.

t The Faculty of Health and Social Care (FHSC) at the University of Hull has avibrant and productive research environment. A core of research-active staffundertake high-quality research, resulting in outputs of national andinternational standing and influence.

The FHSC has a research infrastructure which draws upon all the resources availablein the wider University and beyond. Postgraduate research students benefit from thefacilities of the Graduate School and are required to undertake modules forming partof the Postgraduate Training Scheme. This sits alongside faculty-based opportunitiesoffering postgraduate students the opportunity to attend at least one research-focused event per week. Statistical support and advice is available to studentsrequiring it.

The faculty strives to foster internationally competitive research, promoteinterdisciplinary work and maintain a culture of scholarship. There is cross-departmental cooperation and collaboration alongside a strong focus oninterdisciplinary research and the provision of training. We collaborate on research-related activities with a range of faculties and departments, including the Hull YorkMedical School, the Postgraduate Medical Institute, the Faculty of Education, theInstitute for Applied Ethics, and the Departments of Sport, Health and ExerciseScience, Chemistry, Social Work, Psychology and Theology. There are establishedlinks with NHS organisations across Hull, East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Research within the faculty is methodologically broad and can therefore supportstudents interested in quantitative, qualitative and mixed/multi-method research.Research output is generated through various research groupings under the umbrellaheading of Health and Wellbeing. They are

Social Aspects of CancerAims to extend understanding of patient experience and professional structuresand processes to improve cancer care at all stages from presentation to end of life.This is a particular area of research strength within the faculty, and researchfocuses on particular stages (e.g. initial presentation), location of care (e.g. primarycare) and patient groups (e.g. gender-specific cancers)

Global HealthAims to examine health care provision and usage in global context, both toresearch context-specific issues and to generate understanding and healthimprovement across national boundaries. The faculty is engaged with a number ofinternational collaborators and hosts a number of international PhD students.

Reproductive, Maternal and Family HealthAims to explore and investigate the clinical and social interventions and processesthat individuals encounter across their reproductive and family lives. A particularfocus within this group is on maternity-based interventions and extendingunderstanding of the psychosocial aspects of pregnancy, birth and motherhood toimprove women’s experiences. Other work within this group includes collaborativeresearch on infants and children. This theme already supports a number of PhDstudents, both full-time and part-time.

Social and Therapeutic InclusionAims to enhance understanding of both therapeutic practices on the margins ofmainstream provision and of the processes central to social exclusion of particulargroups and health inequalities in general. This work incorporates a clear policyand practice focus and includes aspects of professionalism and professionalpractice that are integral to health care.

Interdisciplinary and collaborative work: new and emerging researchgroupingsThe appointment of new staff to the faculty and the establishment of new academicunits within the University have created fresh opportunities for collaborative andinterdisciplinary working. About the programmeThis inter-professional programme has been designed tomeet identified local and regional demand for advancedpractice studies within health and social care. It isunderpinned by national policies that address improvedaccess to high-quality care and the promotion ofpatient/client choice such as Our Health, Our Care, OurSay: A New Direction for Community Services (DoH, 2006)and High-Quality Care for All: NHS Next Stage Review(DoH, 2008). Its aim is to provide a high-qualitypostgraduate education that will inform and enhance thestudent’s professional function and enable him or her tocontribute more effectively to the delivery of advancedpractice.

Programme contentThe programme comprises three compulsory modulesand three optional modules (at 20 credits each) followedby a dissertation (60 credits).

About the programmeThis inter-professional programme has been designed tomeet identified needs within the specialised area ofcolonoscopy and will be of value not only to medicaltrainees but also to nurses who have completed relevanteducation and training programmes that demonstrate anaptitude to undertake this MSc. It will be of considerablevalue for non-medical education and training and allowthe recognition of advanced practitioners.

The programme is in line with the publications ofrelevant accrediting bodies, particularly the JointAdvisory Group on Endoscopy Training. It givesfundamental training in the understanding of researchand education and a broad selection of colonoscopy-related theory. For some trainees it will also impart theskills necessary to go beyond competence and to advancetheir practical skills in colonoscopy to a high level.

About the programmeThe MSc in Health Professional Studies is designed tomeet the needs of a range of health and social careprofessionals who are already practising at an advancedlevel or aspire to do so. The modules aim to provide atoolkit of knowledge and critical-thinking skills tosupport advanced practice and enhance patient/clientcare. Practitioners who successfully complete thisprogramme can demonstrate to their employers that theyare knowledgeable and capable practitioners, able tocontribute to the development of evidence-basedpractice.

If individual circumstances dictate, it is possible forstudents to step off the programme with either aPostgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma.

Programme contentThis programme’s generic nature means that it is suitablefor a range of different health and social carepractitioners, the modules studied being equallyapplicable in a range of different care or work settings.The content covers a range of different topics andknowledge bases relevant to contemporary practice. It isexpected that (with support from tutorial staff) studentswill identify areas of interest pertinent to their area ofpractice and apply the module content.

Special featuresThe department has developed strong partnershipworking with local NHS, third-sector and privateproviders. Programmes and modules are developed tomeet local as well as national demands and policychanges. In 2008 the QAA Major Subject Review indicatedconfidence in academic and practitioner standards.

The overarching aim of the programme is to provide ahigh-quality educational experience that will inform andenhance the students’ roles as leaders and managerswithin health and social care organisations.

About the schemeThe aim of the Professional Development QualificationScheme (PDQS) is to give you an opportunity to study a‘stand-alone’ module at Level 7 on a specific area ofinterest without having to commit to a full programme ofstudy. Once registered on the programme, which lasts forone academic year, you can access up to three modules.Some students also use the scheme to find out whetherthey can study successfully at Level 7 before embarkingon a full postgraduate programme. The faculty offersmodules in Semesters 1, 2 and �, and applicants canselect one or more modules from those listed in the table.

The PhD programme involves a significant element ofresearch training, leading to a Postgraduate Certificate orDiploma in Research Training. For those with limitedexperience of undertaking research, however, there is theopportunity to register for an MPhil (Master ofPhilosophy) programme in the first instance. You canthen upgrade to PhD after one year of study (or two yearspart-time), depending on satisfactory progress.

Programme contentYou will undertake an extended investigation under theguidance of an academic supervisor. A PhD is theultimate form of student-centred learning. Although youwill meet regularly with your supervisor and otherpostgraduate research students in the faculty and theGraduate School, you will need the ability and motivationto work independently. The precise scope of yourinvestigation will be negotiated with your supervisor aspart of the application process.

During the programme you will learn research methods,project management skills, skills of independentworking, and advanced writing and presentationtechniques. (You will select from a range of modulesprovided by the University under its PostgraduateTraining Scheme.) You will also, of course, developadvanced theoretical knowledge of your subject area.

AssessmentAt the end of the programme you will produce a thesis ofup to 100,000 words which describes your research indetail. You will then have a formal oral examination inwhich questions about your research will be put to you bytwo examiners who are experts in your field.

About the programmeThis programme is for nurses, midwives and members ofrelated professions who wish to undertake a complexresearch project under the guidance of an experiencedacademic supervisor. It is aimed at professionals whowish to develop their research skills to a high level andapply them in the context of their work. As such, it issuitable for practitioners whose role involves a significantelement of research (such as nurse consultants andclinical specialists), or for those who wish to develop acareer in higher education. The programme is availableby full- or part-time study. It involves a significantelement of research training, leading to a PostgraduateCertificate or Diploma in Research Training.

You undertake 60 taughtcredits, all of which are part of the Postgraduate TrainingScheme. In addition, you submit a dissertation to thevalue of 120 credits. If you wish, you may use the MRes asa basis for a PhD. This programme is ideal for those whohave a clear interest in research but do not yet wish tocommit themselves to a full PhD. It is suitable forpractitioners whose role involves a significant element ofresearch (such as nurse consultants or clinical specialists,or those aspiring to these roles), or those who wish todevelop a career in higher education. The programme isavailable by full- or part-time study.

Programme contentYou will undertake modules to the value of 60 credits inresearch methods, including quantitative and qualitativeapproaches. The modules are selected from thoseavailable with the advice of your supervisor and theDirector of Postgraduate Studies. You will also submit adissertation of 25,000–�0,000 words on a research topicnegotiated with your supervisor at the time of yourapplication. The dissertation should contain anintroduction, a literature review, research questions and adiscussion of methodological issues, and is weighted at120 credits. During the programme you will learn aboutdifferent research methods, project management skills,skills of independent working, and skills in writing andpresentation. You will also develop your theoreticalknowledge of your subject area.

AssessmentTaught modules are assessed individually. Yourdissertation will be examined by two examiners who areexperts in your field.
