Screening Day

Dear Neighbors,

As some of you may already know, I am leaving

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital this month to take

on a new leadership position at Enloe Medical

Center in California . My last day as hospital

president will be March 16 .

While I am excited about this new opportunity to

serve, the Shady Grove community will always hold

a special place in my heart . Over the past seven

years, many of you have inspired and touched me

with your personal letters of hope, courage, strength

and appreciation for the care you have received at

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital .

It has been my privilege to serve you alongside an

incredible group of people—the medical staff,

leadership, staff and volunteers of Shady Grove .

They are the foundation of what makes this

hospital so special .

They have helped me bring you Maryland’s first

free-standing medical facility in Germantown

and Maryland’s first Planetree affiliated hospital,

focused on patient-centered care . They understand

this growing community and have participated

in the planning and design of our new four-story

patient tower . I know they will continue to provide

you with the very best in care .

Dennis Hansen, Vice President and Chief Operating

Officer of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, will serve

as the interim President throughout the selection

process . A search committee with members of the

Hospital Governing Board, medical staff, and the

leadership of Adventist HealthCare will ensure that

the best candidate is chosen .

Thank you for allowing me to serve you . It has been

an honor and a pleasure .

With gratitude and warm regards,

Deborah A . Yancer

President

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital

A Farewell. And My Sincere Gratitude.

These are just a few of the compliments received by Dr . Kevin Gil, a family practitioner and geriatric

specialist . Shady Grove’s leadership recognized Dr . Gil as our Physician RISES award winner for Spring

2006 . The RISES Award recognizes physicians who live and work in a manner that reflects the values

of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital: Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship (RISES) .

Thank you, Dr . Gil, for your many contributions and dedication . To find other award-winning

physicians associated with Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, please call 800-642-0101 or visit our

Web site at www .ShadyGroveAdventistHospital .com .

Our Thanks and Recognition to Dr. Kevin Gil.

Congratulations to

Dr. Kevin Gil, Winner of the RISES

Award for Spring 2006

“Dr. Gil is the best primary care doctor that I know. He is an inspiration to me as a physician.”

“Not only is he an excellent doctor, he is compassionate, he listens, he is genuine, he makes you feel like you are the only one he has to see all day.”

Parents Can Set the Example Through Healthy LivingChildren live what they learn by example . That’s why Dr . Saquib Lakhani, a physician at

Shady Grove’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, advises parents to take an active role in their

children’s lifestyle choices .

“We can’t live an unhealthy lifestyle, then expect our children to do the opposite . We can’t

just say, ‘No TV!’ while we’re on the couch watching TV ourselves . The key is not only to

restrict the harmful, but to provide good, healthy alternatives,” he explains .

More television time can add to child obesity.

“Television promotes obesity in children in a combination of ways,” says Dr . Lakhani .

“Children who spend more time watching TV spend less time in physical activity . And

the commercials steer them towards high-calorie, low-nutritive-value foods .” Unhealthy

diets combined with lack of exercise results in observable links between obesity and

preventable disease such as Type II diabetes .

Dr . Lakhani believes parents must teach their children healthy living practices . “It’s

important to take the time from our busy lifestyles to go outside and play with our kids . As

parents we must do whatever it takes to promote a lifetime of healthy living .”

To find a pediatrician to discuss the health and wellness of your child, call 800-642-0101 .

Linking Television to Obesity A study in Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent

Medicine (April 2006) established a link

between watching television and childhood

obesity . Children in the study ate an extra 167

calories for every hour of television watched.

Based on the results from over 40 scientific

studies, the National Association for Sport and

Physical Education recommends that children

engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of daily

physical activity to instill a lifelong habit of

personal fitness.

A Farewell. And My Sincere Gratitude.

Our Thanks and Recognition to Dr. Kevin Gil.

Spring 2007 3

Dr. Saquib Lakhani and his wife, T. Fatima Quraisha, have three young sons. They spend a lot of time

outdoors together playing sports, hiking and camping.

Ah, Spring! When sports enthusiasts head outdoors

for fun, the Shady Grove orthopedic specialists head to

the hospital .

That’s because all the running, jumping, crashing and

bumping that athletes and amateurs experience can lead

to any number of injuries, from simple to serious .

“Think about it . In spring, a lot of sports teams are in full

swing, and people are back on their bikes, running, on the

courts or on the golf course,” says Steven L . Tuck, M .D ., a

specialist in pediatric orthopedics, hand surgery, and an

orthopedic surgeon at Shady Grove . “So that’s when the

injuries occur — for all ages .”

Sports Medicine for the Whole Family

For Sonja Sienkowski, RN, an operating room nurse

at Shady Grove, sports is a way of life for her whole

family . And they’ve had their share of injuries . Her son,

John Matthew, 15, is a lineman on the football team, a

defenseman on the lacrosse team at Frederick High School, and has

been to the pediatric emergency room twice for head injuries .

Daughter Kayla, 14, is a team member of the Frederick Gymnastics

Club, and gymnasts are especially prone to injuries, from rolled

ankles to more serious injuries . Kayla herself has had a number of

reasons to see orthopedists, including Dr . Tuck, who often attends to

injuries the gymnastic team encounters .

Sonja and her husband have also relied on Shady Grove’s sports

medicine specialists; she for an injured knee and wrist, her husband

for injuries to both Achilles tendons .

“I work with these people . That’s why I know there’s no other place

I’d go,” says Sonja . “The orthopedists, the anesthetists, they’re top-

notch . They really keep up with the trends and the technology .”

Trends, Technology & Training Experts

“The doctors also really understand high-performance

training,” she adds . “Some of these kids here are

competing on national teams and receiving intensive

training . These physicians are familiar with the kind of

stresses these kids’ bodies are going through .”

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has 37 physicians

credentialed in orthopedics — the branch of

medicine specializing in muscles and bones.

Many have specific areas of expertise.

If you’d like to find an orthopedist

with a particular specialty, call

Spring means lacrosse for John Matthew Sienkowski. And a busy season for Shady

Grove orthopedists.

‘Tis the Season for Sports Medicine

In an emergency, every second is critical . So is information .

When police, fire emergency rescue crew respond to calls,

they often don’t have the benefit of a patient’s history .

The File of Life card is a mini-medical history card that can

give emergency personnel the information they need . It can

be posted to the outside of your refrigerator or carried in

your wallet or purse . On it, you list your name and address,

emergency contacts, and:

• Medical conditions and allergies

• Medications you take

• Personal medical information

File of Life: A Winning Card in Emergencies.

Kids’ bodies are growing fast . On the

average, they grow 2” per year, and

up to 6” per year in early adolescence,

says Dr . Steven Tuck, a pediatric

orthopedist . Since their bones are

growing faster than their muscles,

young people especially need to

stretch and strengthen — reasonably .

For Young Athletes

• Warm-up and cool-down stretching

routines . Cool-down stretching is

especially important .

• Frequently, parents ask about

weight lifting . In general, it’s

reasonable for a young person to

lift up to and including his own

weight, not beyond .

• Consult with your child’s coach

or trainer for stretching and

strengthening exercises .

If you need additional advice, contact

an orthopedist or sports medicine

specialist .

For Adults Who Exercise or Play Sports

• Conditioning is vitally important .

• Start slow and build your way up .

• Core training and yoga are a great

place to start .

For fitness, yoga and core training

programs in the area, see p. 12.

in pediatric orthopedics, hand

surgery, and an orthopedic

surgeon at Shady Grove.

Dr. Cong Ning & Patient Ellie

Dr . Mitchell Price is enthusiastic as he talks about Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for Children .

“It’s an exciting time . The scope of our pediatric services is expanding, more experts are here,

and we’re gaining recognition in the area .

“There’s a feeling that something special is happening . It’s more than a big new building going

up; it’s knowing that the expertise is here, too . We’re making this a true children’s center .”

Kids need special treatment.

Dr . Price has years of experience with young people, and understands the expertise

required for children’s health care . “Kids aren’t little adults,” he says . “They have

to be treated differently .”

Of course, a children’s hospital should be physically designed for kids .

But more important is having the experts available who know how to work

with children, and having all the pediatric services and subspecialties

available in one place .

Caring for the whole family.

To Dr . Price, another important benefit of having a hospital for children is

the help that it gives to the entire family . Having a sick child with multiple

problems who has to be treated far from home affects everyone . Parents are

torn and under stress . Work suffers, the other children suffer .

“I know, I have five kids, and when one of mine was being treated in a hospital,

I was a mess,” he recalls . “But when you can provide high-quality care close to

home, it helps everyone .”

That’s why parents need to know about Shady Grove’s commitment to be the

hospital of choice for children’s care . “The specialists who can handle more

complicated, higher risk problems — together with a whole level of subspecialists

— will all be in one place . And we have one goal . To take the best possible care of

every child that enters our doors .”

New Faces, Even More Expertise, at our Hospital for Children.

Dr. Price is a pediatric surgeon at Shady Grove, an associate professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins

University School of Medicine and has also spent the last ten years as an assistant professor of surgery at the

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School‑Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital. His specialties include pediatric

laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery, pediatric surgical oncology and treatment of congenital anomalies.

Dear Sunny:I like candy, cake and ice cream. That’s my favorite stuff to eat. But my mom wants me to eat more fruits and vegetables. How come? What’s wrong with just my favorites? — Maria, age 7

A: Hey, Maria, I know what you mean—I love my chewbones! But our bodies need different kinds of foods to grow. Like breads and cereals for energy to run and play. Milk and yogurt for strong and healthy bones! And fruits and veggies have important vitamins and minerals to help you grow up strong. Fruits and veggies can be yummy too! Give them a try! Wow, all this talk is making me hungry!

Hi, Sunny! I have a friend who’s allergic to peanuts! What does that mean? — Keisha, age 8

A: Hi, Keisha. I go nuts for nuts, but for some people they can cause BIG trouble. When you have a food allergy, like peanuts, your body sees that food as harmful. It tries to protect you. Sometimes that causes sneezing and runny noses. (Hey, I always have a wet nose!)

But allergies to nuts can cause difficulty breathing and other serious health problems. And it’s amazing how many foods have nuts in them, including some chocolate. Tell your friend to be super-careful!
