Festive Dates for your Diary
Headway’s Right First Time
campaign, which calls for
the government to improve
disability benefits assess-
ments for brain injury survi-
vors, has had a boost thanks
to MP Hugh Gaffney.
In September Parliament held a de-
bate on Personal Independence Pay-
ment (PIP). Leading the debate,
Hugh Gaffney MP said: “I have called
for a debate on the roll-out of per-
sonal independence payment, known
as PIP, because of the calls, the
emails and the visits to my surgery
from people pushed to breaking
point.”
The MP criticised the level of assess-
ments and decisions which were
overturned on appeal, or were in-
correct, citing research showing
that four out of 10 PIP claimants do
not appeal, as it would be too stress-
ful for them.
He said: “We have unfair assess-
ments that result in people losing
money, but they do not appeal be-
cause of the stress that would be
caused.”
Dr Clare Mills, Headway UKs Public
Affairs Manager, said: “We welcome
Mr Gaffney’s recognition of Head-
way’s work on the problems brain
injury survivors are facing over PIP.
We know the system needs to
change to take hidden disability,
including brain injury, into account.”
Right First Time
are invited to the Christmas lunch. Please let Jamie Hig-
gins know if you would like to attend.

Striding Out for Headway Thames Valley
Throughout the year clients who
attend our Centre in Henley
work on art projects and love it
when they get the chance to
showcase them.
On Saturday 8th September Headway
Thames Valley clients showed their
work at The Henley Show and the
results were fantastic with an award
presentation carried out soon after at
our hub in Henley.
Well done to our amazing clients,
staff and volunteers who worked so
hard to produce these fantastic piec-
es. We will hopefully be putting on a
Headway Thames Valley Art Exhibi-
tion in the new year so watch this
space!
On Sunday 30th September
around 50 runners took part on
a cold but sunny morning in our
Headway Thames Valley 5k and
Children’s 2k.
Beale Park near Pangbourne was once
again the beautiful backdrop for peo-
ple to take on their personal challeng-
es, whether that was striving for a
personal best in the run or walking
the longest distance since their brain
injury.
It was wonderful to see our clients,
their families and supporters taking
part and achieving their goals. The
event also raised a fantastic £3,400
for Headway Thames Valley.
Thank you to everyone who took
part, supported the event, made a
donation or made the delicious sand-
wiches and cakes which helped to
keep everyone going!
Also a big thank you to law firm
Field Seymour Parkes LLP for their
funding support for the event.
We’d also like to thank the Grafton family for raising over £1,700 at their dog show and
Reuben O’brien who raised over £1,200 in the Henley Half Marathon.

How to Survive or Thrive at Christmas ning, memory problems, and
intolerance to noise. For
some, the very thought of
Christmas can result in night-
mares!
So how do people with a
brain injury plan for a stress-
free Christmas? We posed
the question to our Facebook
and HealthUnlocked commu-
nities:
Planning: “Beforehand, let your
family know you will need lots of
breaks throughout the Christmas
period.
“Use lists; it’s the only way
Christmas happens.”
Christmas Day: “Try not to do
everything, accept help, ask for
it if needed, try and space out
the visits so not everyone all at
once.”
Doing what suits you best:
“Mellow out. Christmas should-
n’t be stressful…What I would
mostly want for Christmas is to
have a good time, good food and
good company.”
The Big Give – Christmas Challenge We have been given an amazing opportunity for donations to Headway Thames
Valley to be doubled, at no extra cost to supporters, for one week only.
The Christmas Challenge 2018 will run from midday #GivingTuesday 27th November –

injury. A gift of £10 will become £20 or £200 will become £400. Please note that the mini-
mum online donation is £5.
Your donations will help us to provide vital support to more brain injury survivors and
their families.
Headway have put together
some tips for people living
with brain injury to ensure
they have the best possible
Christmas.
Christmas is a time when families
and friends come together to eat,
drink, and be merry – or so we’re
led to believe.
In reality, however, a busy social
calendar, family politics, complex
meals to plan and prepare, present
shopping to do, and an expecta-
tion to keep smiling can mean ‘tis
not always the season to be jolly!
This is particularly the case when
you combine these common
stressors with brain injury effects
such as fatigue, difficulty with plan-
