When you work hard and put in the extra effort, good things happen! That is exactly what your Flint SCI board members has done this past year. Myself and a few board members just returned from the convention in Las Vegas and upon our return we brought back 2 awards. We received the Fundraiser and Newsletter Publication award and the “TOP GUN” award for 2017. I am very happy and proud of the accomplishments that have made on behalf of this board. You should all be as proud as I am to be a member of this Chapter. Congratulations Flint Regional Chapter!

Prior to going out to convention your board has been working on this Fundraising Event to make it bigger and better than last year. We have 3 new board members that are on board now and helping us to be successful once again. The transition is slowly taking place and hopefully with very few hiccups moving forward. It is always difficult to maintain past practices and keep things problem free when your team changes. Please hang in there and help us work through this transition.

Talking about transitions, in July you will be getting a new President. Dennis Peters will be taking over the reins as my term comes to an end. When you see him, please congratulate him on his next venture and support him. He will be a good leader! I wish him well and good luck! There are other positions that are up for re-election in June as well, good luck to them.

As a member of the SCI Flint Regional Chapter we invite all of you to take advantage of everything that we have to offer. Come join us at our events, dinners, awards and membership meetings. We enjoy meeting with you and talking about hunting, fishing or anything that may be of interest or concern to you. We want you to be involved and are always looking for volunteers for our projects and events. If you are interested contact us and we will put you to work. I want to say that as President of the SCI Flint Regional Chapter I am thankful for this experience and enjoyed my terms on this board. I have meet a lot of great people, made a lot of friends and enjoyed making good things happen for our community. I enjoyed all of the young people and their stories at the Youth Deer Pole at Madden’s, such an exciting event! The Buck Pole and recruiting teachers for our AWLs program in Wyoming. Meeting all of our Wish hunter’s and Veterans that participated in hunts sponsored by us. So many great memories! Again, keep supporting the SCI and this Chapter because it is worth every penny

Wildlife Conservation Programs• Moose Census Programs: SCI-Flint has been instrumental in

supporting the very successful reintroduction of the moose to Michigan. Over $15,000 has been contributed since 1998 to collar moose in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. This program has been very valuable in assisting the DNR to observe and increase Michigan’s moose herd population. Without SCI there would be no moose population in Michigan

• 1998 through 2002 - Kodiak Island Bear Conservation Initiative: Over $5,000 has been contributed to help conserve bear habitat on Kodiak Island in Alaska.

• 1999 & 2200 - $1,000 contributed to a study in the western states to help stop the population decline of mule deer.

• 1999 & 2000 - $4,500 to COHA. This money was donated to Canadian Alliance of groups to oppose the manifold efforts of Anti-Hunting groups.

• 2000 - $1,000 sponsor experts from South Africa to study Michigan’s TB problem in whitetail deer.

• 2000 - $750 to Michigan DNR. Money used to purchase robotic deer to thwart poachers locally.

• 2000 – Funding assistance to DNR. This money was used to provide air fare for two DNR officers as they traveled to California to arrest a northern Michigan deer poacher.

• 2000 & 2002 - $5,000 to Alberta Professional Outfitters Society, Financial assistance for Antelope and Moose studies in Alberta.

• 2001 - $500 funding assistance to SCI Alberta Chapter to study effects of Spring Black Bear hunting.

• 2000 - $1,000 to Metro Wildlife Management organization. This group helps the DNR to control whitetail population in the urban areas.

• 2001 - $2,500 donated to quality deer management program in Michigan’s Thumb area. This program advocates the “Let them go, let them grow” 6 point and better whitetail harvesting philosophy.

• Saginaw Valley Waterfowlers - $4,000 since 1998 for Marsh Management Programs in the Lapeer State Game Area.

• Area Pheasants Forever Chapter – A total of $5,000 since 1997.• Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management Bear Initiative -

$10,000.• Minnesota Hunting Initiative - $500. • Utah Hunting Initiative - $1,000.• Montana Wildlife Management - $18,000.• Ontario Bear Initiative - $5,000• 2003 - $6,000 donated to Alberta University for the study of

Black Bear behavior.• 2003 - $4,000 donated to Saskatewan Outfitters Association.• SCI-Flint along with Safari Club International has been at the fore

front to battle Bovine TB and Chronic Waste Disease. To date SCI and SCI-Flint have spent over $100,000.00 to study and defeat these debilitating illnesses in our wildlife.

• 2005 - $7,000 donated to the Ratel Trust of South Africa to study Lion prides in northern Mozambique in an effort to better understand and manage hunting practices in this area.

• Alberta Professional Outfitters Society - A total of $11,000 was donated between 2000 and 2005 as financial assistance for Antelope and Black Bear studies. , Since 225 SCI-Flint has contributed $21,000 to Alberta Professional Outfitters Association.

• Michigan Bobcat Study - $2,000 donated.• 2007 - $3,500 donated to the Ratel Fund for Leopard Study in

Mozambique. This program has been recognized internationally by all conservationists for its unbiased results.

• 2007 - $1,000 donated to Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia for continued wildlife studies.

• 2007 - $2,000 donated to MIC for Bovine TB testing and predator studies, administered by the MDNR, within the state of Michigan.

Protecting Our “Right To Hunt”• Canadian Firearms Safety Class – Presentation offered to Chapter

members in order to avoid border licensing fees and delays. Forty members received their “PAL” ID cards.

• 1998 - $20,000 to fight the Anti-Bear Hunting Initiative in Michigan. SCI-Flint and Ron Lundberg’s efforts were rewarded by defeating Anti-Hunting efforts in Michigan to ban bear baiting. Ron’s efforts were recognized when he received the Sportsman of the

Year award from MUCC. Our efforts were rewarded when this voter initiative was defeated in a bitter struggle with Anti-Hunting groups which was closely watched nationally

• 1998 - $1,000 to assist Utah SCI in fighting a similar Anti-Hunting legislation effort.

• 1999 - $1,000 to Oregon Anti-Poaching Initiative to fight poaching through DNR efforts.

• 1999 & 2000 - $500 to oppose Ontario bear hunting ban.• 1999 &2000 - $1,500 to oppose British Columbia anti-bear hunting

initiative.• 1999 & 2000 - $1,000 to Minnesota SCI to assist another Anti-

Hunting legislation effort.• 2000 - $500 to Arizona Wildlife Organization in efforts not to

amend their state constitution.• 2000 & 2001 - $4,500 to Alaska Wildlife coalitions to bar future

initiatives relating to Wildlife Management.• 2001 – $30,000 SCI-Washington D.C. Building Fund• 2001 – SDI-Flint sponsored Canadian Firearms spokesmen to

explain new Canadian Customs Regulations. No charge was issued to the 150 participants.

• Over the last five years SCI-Flint has donated over $12,500 to the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. This organization, like SCI, has been instrumental in the fight to protect our right to hunt.

• 2002 - $2,000 to SCI-Hunters Defense Fund• 2003 - $3,000 to Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. This

50 year old organization has made some serious advances with the Ontario Government to reopen Spring Black Bear hunting. SCI -Flint has spent over $5,000 in the last three years in an effort to overturn the illegitimate closure of spring bear hunting by the Ontario Provincial Government.

• 2005 - $1,000 donated to Maine Black Bear Initiative to fund pro-hunting coalition with its legislative battle with anti-hunters trying to close down black bear hunting in the state.

• 2006 –SCI-Flint was at the forefront of battling an anti-hunting group formed to close Morning Dove hunting in the state of Michigan. The Flint Chapter donated $20,000 directly to the fight; a $10,000 campaign contribution was made to assist in this battle with anti-hunting groups. Scott Chapman led a Chapter contingent to Washington D.C. to raise another $42,000; and Rich Richardson headed a fundraising committee that raised another $140,000 at a single night’s event. Although the hunters were badly defeated, the SCI-Flint Chapter understood the big picture. There are powerful forces whose sole purpose is to end our hunting heritage.

• 2008- SCI-Flint sent SCI-Alaska $5,000 to help oppose an anti-hunting ballot initiative in that state. The anti-hunting proposal was prudently and soundly defeated by Alaskan voters.

• SCI-Flint, SCI-Novi, and SCI-Detroit teamed up with the Salvation Army to create a Youth Hunter Safety Camp in South Eastern Michigan – to the tune of $20,000

• 2009- $1,500 to U.S. Sportsman’s Alliance.• 2010 – SCI-Flint contributed $2,500 in support of Arizona Ballot

Proposition 109, to make hunting a State Constitutional Right.• 2010 – SCI-Flint donated $1,000 to defeat Montana Ballot 1-161,

which asked to eliminate Outfitter Sponsored Licenses.• 2011 - $1,000 Wolf/Predator Control, New Mexico


• 2011 - $2,000 MDNR Predator Study. • 2012 Friends of SCI-Flint $1,100 donation to SCI-PAC.• 2013 SCI Flint begins planning to protect a wolf hunt ballot issue

expected in 2014• Late 2013 - $5000 donated to The Citizens for Professional Wildlife

Management to Initiate Legislation to enact the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act in the State of Michigan.

• 2014 SCI Flint donated an additional $47,500 to The Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management. The group, which was lead by the Michigan Chapters of SCI and other Michigan Sportsmen’s groups succeeded in enacting the law.

• 2015 SCI Flint donated $1500 to the Texas Initiative to protect the freedom to hunt in Texas

• 2016 SCI Flint donated $1000 to the US Sportsman’s Alliance to advocate on behalf of hunters

• 2017 SCI Flint donated $2500 to the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses. Funds are dedicated for use in Michigan. 7 other Michigan SCI Chapters donated $2500 each for a total group donation of $20,000.

• 2017 SCI Flint donated $1000 to the US Sportsmen’s Alliance to advocate on behalf of hunters

Annual Programs Supported• SCI Political Action Building: Opened in May of 2002 to house

SCI staff. The presence of SCI in Washington D.C. has been very successful with influencing Pro Hunter Legislation. To date, Flint’s contributions have totaled over S38, 000.

• Sportsmen Against Hunger: A program devoted to supplying food to the underprivileged through contributions of wild game meat from hunters. This program has supported over 48,000 pounds of meat to the needy since 1998. Program Director: Dennis Gepfrey

• AWLS: American Wilderness Leadership Program: SCI-Flint provides 100% scholarships to teachers. Our chapter sends these individuals to week long seminars in order to learn about habitat conservation, wildlife management, and youth education. Ninety teachers have attended since 1998. Contributions from 1997 to 2017 total $136,400.

• Disabled Veterans Hunt: The Flint Regional chapter co-sponsors this event with the SE Bow chapter, Brain Injury Association of MI, and is run by Tails-A-Waggin’ – Chuck Connell in Marion MI. This program is a way for us to say thank-you to our troops and at the same time help veterans that may be suffering from PTSD or other injuries.

• 2007 Safari Wish: With the generous assistance of Greg and Patti Louden, SCI-Flint was able to provide Safari Wish Hunts to three recipients: Severely wounded Marine Corps Sergeant John Lockwood was given the hunt of a lifetime. Lockwood, assisted by Flint member Jim Wilson, harvested a beautiful bison and was able to fill the freezer for the winter. Also, thanks to a generous donation from the Loudens, SCI-Flint was able to provide two youth hunters with a great Axis Deer hunt – both were thrilled!

• 2009 Safari Wish Program supported through the Catskill Mountains SCI Chapter

• General Fund to support our “Right to Hunt” Contributions from 1997 to 2010 exceeds $450,000.

• MIC: The Michigan Involvement Committee is a program

developed by the Michigan Chapters of SCI as a consulting group to the Michigan DNR. The group assists our state government in writing legislation to better manage our outdoor resources and also funds DNR conservation projects. Contributions from 1998 to 2015 total over $72,000. The MIC is nationally regarded as the most successful interaction with a state wildlife agency in the history of SCI. Current Program Director: Neal Porter

• SCI Sables: A Safari Club women’s’ organization to support education projects.

• SCI Wildlife Museum Support Fund. Contributions since 1997 total $22,000.

• Camo and Lace: From 2003 to 2007, SCI-Flint has contributed $9,000 to this program that promotes women participating in hunting, shooting sports and other outdoor activities that promote our hunting heritage.

• 2008 Safari Wish/B4K Youth Hunt – SCI-Flint and Benefit for Kids teamed up to send Eleven year old Jordan Anthony to New Brunswick for a black bear hunt. Jordon suffers from a life limiting ailment and wished for this hunt. SCI-Flint stepped in with $2,500 and became the major donor for Jordan’s trip and fulfilling a life time dream.

• Since 2006 , SCI Flint has donated $11,500 to our local Eastern Michigan Food Bank.

• 2010-Jim George Scholarship: An undergraduate scholarship established in 2010 named on behalf of Jim George - Flint Regional Chapter member. Funding of this program was established with funds donated by the chapter by his surviving family members. Two $500 scholarships are granted each year.

• 2011 Safari Wish – SCI- Flint Provided paraplegic Dan Schlink with an elk mount after a successful hunt from his wheelchair.

• 2012 Safari Wish – SCI- Flint in, conjunction with Briarwood Sporting Club (Ohio) as well as Flint chapter supporter, Taxidermist Bob Parkey, provided terminal cancer patients Jesse and Makenzie with whitetail mounts after a successful hunt.

• 2012 – Flint Chapter purchased a sip and puff trigger system for $2,000 which enables quadriplegic and paraplegic persons to use firearms for hunting.

• 2001 – 2016 – SCI-Flint sponsored Youth Buck Pole in Davison, Michigan

• SCI-Flint pays for 12 year old boys and girls to attend a weekend camp at Caseville, Michigan in order to earn a youth hunter certificate and learn to shoot bows and firearms. SCI has sent over 50 children in the last five years.

• Safari Wish Program – SCI-Flint sponsors disabled youth hunters in harvesting their first whitetail deer. This year we were blessed to be able to sponsor two hunters. Both Makenzie and Jessie successfully harvested a beautiful buck and each recipient and had a very exciting tale to tell.

• Michigan Youth Hunter Education Challenge – SCI-Flint sponsors local youth hunter teams to participate in shooting competitions. Five member teams sponsored by the Flint Chapter in 1998 &1999. These teams competed at regional and state levels in 1998 and 1999, and at International competitions in 1998. Total financial support $8,000

• Safari Club Initiative developed to promote SCI Membership and Education to youths under the age of 16 Program start-up and contributions from SCI- Flint - $1,500


• Amanda Smith Assistance Fund - $500 to sponsor a youth from Davison to participate in U.S. National’s Archery Competition in 2000.

• Tall Pine Council/SCI-Flint joint program to promote youth hunter training. This program has been very successful and duplicated by other chapters nationally. The program supplies the tools needed for Boy Scouts to train on shooting and archery ranges at Camp Tapico in Grayling, Michigan. Improvements provided include a Sporting Clay Tower, 3-D archery targets(5), compound bows (2), Remington 1100’s (2), Marlin 22’s (2), The 2006 Camp Tapic Shooting Range improvements totaled $3,200 and Camp Holaka shooting range sponsored at a cost of $1,500. Total to date contributions are $17,900. Program Director: Tim Pifher.

• Youth Pheasant Hunt – Six youths sponsored for pheasant shoots in 1999-2006. Financial contribution $2,500.

• Since 2007 SCI-Flint has sponsored over 17 area high school skeet teams at $500. Each.

• Reese High School Out-Of-Doors Club since 2001 - $5,500• Local Hunting Safety Classes - $2,500 for local young adult gun

safety classes.• “Officer Linda Program” – Linda Miazga, a retired Michigan State

Trooper, visits local elementary schools to educate our youths to the dangers of unsupervised firearm use. SCI-Flint donated $4,000 to Officer Linda since 2002. This money has been utilized to educate over 5,400 youths in Genesee County.

• Marty Madden Youth Fishing Tournament - $5,000 donated since 2000. This ice fishing event encourages and educates very young children to the joy of fishing and outdoors.

• 2004 - $600. Donated to the Conway Trust to help fund Michigan’s largest wildlife mural, located at Camp Copneconic in Fenton.

• Safari Wish Program – SCI-Flint fully funds a disabled hunter on their first hunt.

• Kids in Chemo Program: SCI- Flint contributed over $8,000 between 2005 and 2007 to a program designed to support children undergoing chemotherapy by participating in a sporting clays competition.

• Flint Bowman’s Club - $ 6,200 donated to sponsor youth archery league.

• 2008 – SCI-Flint donated $3,000 to sponsor shooting sports teams in Goodrich, Davison and Kearsley.

• 2008 – SCI-Flint provided financial assistance to National Youth Archery Competition participants Jessica and Amanda Gibbs.

• 2008 – SCI – Flint supported a Hahn Middle School canoe trip for over 150 youths.

• 2010 - 2016. Donated to support Hahn Elementary School Outdoor Program.

Sportsmen Against HungerI would like to update you on our 2017 donations of deer that we received during the year. This year was better than the last two years as we donated over 2,300 lbs to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. 107 deer were donated and processed. I asked for donations from all of the young hunters at our Youth Hunt Deer Pole and also everyone that attended our Buck Pole. You do know that we will accept any kind of meat for a donation, and any amount! Our Sportsmen Against Hunger campaign is on all year long, 24 / 7. I will continue my efforts to gather as much food as I possibly can to help feed the people in and around our community. I am asking for some help from all of to do the same.

If you hit a deer or see a deer laying on the side of the road, please call 911 and report it. They will contact me, or sometimes pick it up and deliver it to the processor themselves. It is sad seeing them laying on the road side, but even sadder that they lay there for weeks and rot away. That is such a waste and it doesn’t look good either! Anything you can do to is appreciated and can make a big impact, no matter how small of gesture.

I am also open to any ideas or suggestions from you that can help make this bigger and better. I want to stock the shelves so full that Bill Kerr will have to either buy more shelves or add onto his building again! My mission is to feed anyone that needs help feeding their families and to help them get back onto their feet. I know that I can’t help them all, but I will do my best to try! This is important to me, and SCI. We are American citizens, this is what we do; help people all over the world. I need you to help me and our neighbors. Pass the word on, this year is going to be record breaking for donations. With all of you on board and helping me, we can’t fail!

SCI Flint Honored at the SCI International Convention

The Flint Chapter of SCI was honored at the convention in Las Vegas with 2 major awards. This year, President Dennis Gepfrey accepted the Top Gun Chapter Award on behalf of the SCI Flint membership. This award exemplifies the programs and continual growth as a chapter. This Top Gun Award has been presented to this chapter five times (SCI Flint won in 2001, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2017) and is the most prestigious chapter award in SCI.

Kyle D. Randall

MEDIA PERSON OF THE YEAR

Kyle Randall is most probably America’s premier, modern, sportsman. And while he is best known as the producer and host of,

“The Wilderness Journal” television program, for the last 22 years, as well as being the author of, “The End of the Asphalt” magazine series. He has spent his entire life, in the out-of-doors.

Having hunted and fished his way across nearly all of North America, before age 45, Kyle counts among his many hunting and fishing accomplishments:

Harvesting 43 record book, Whitetail, Black Tail and Mule Deer, Rocky Mountain and Roosevelt Elk, North American Antelope, a five hundred plus, pound, Black Bear and 4 species of Wild Turkey, all with his “Stick Pusher”. As well as over 3 dozen trophy big game animals, with all types of firearms and he’s been lucky enough to catch nearly every kind of sports and food fish on the continent.

A U.S. Army Veteran and leader in the Sporting community, Kyle has answered the call to serve as well. He has authored and co-authored 17 separate pieces, of positive legislation of on behalf of out-door families in Michigan and across the Nation. Kyle founded and directed The Michigan Sportsmen Congress and is the founding sponsor of Camp Wilderness, a hunter and bow hunter education camp, that has successfully instructed thousands of youth.

Kyle also speaks to thousands annually at Christian out-reach dinners and seminars. Never short on opinions, Kyle maintains that he will answer, publicly;

any question, on any subject, at any time. When recently asked to describe his own life, he replied; “The Lord has been very kind to me. I’ve been blessed with the unending love, of a tremendous woman, for over 40 years.” “And along with Tina, I’ve been given the chance to raise, 3 wonderful children, 5 outstanding grandchildren, at least one “good” bird dog.

It has been a long, exciting road, and along the way, I know we have collected, at least 10 thousand meals .........100 thousand fond memories ........ and over a million, wondrous friends ........all in all........ I’d call that a pretty good start.”

“Paul Mitchell was elected to the 115th Congress to represent Michigan’s 10th District. The district includes Huron, Sanilac, Tuscola, Lapeer, St. Clair and Macomb counties. Upon his election to Congress, his new Republican colleagues selected him as the Freshman Representative to the GOP House Leadership. He serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the Education and the Workforce Committee, and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Paul, the oldest of seven, is the proud son of a GM autoworker, and graduated from Michigan State University. Paul and his wife Sherry live with their family on a farm in Dryden, Michigan.

Paul’s love for his home state and its citizens has led him to a life of service. His record of leadership includes organizing the

fight to defeat the Proposal 1 tax increase in Michigan, which would have been the largest tax increase in Michigan in fifty years. In addition, Paul has dedicated much of his career to workforce training, serving the State of Michigan, Chrysler, and ultimately as CEO of Ross Education.

As a gun owner and an avid hunter, Paul understands the importance of protecting the Second Amendment. Through his work in Congress, he has supported legislation like the Hearing Protection Act, Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, Lawful Purpose and Self Defense Act and more. Paul has hunted across North America for black bears, moose, wolves, antelopes and mule deer. To him, hunting is not just about the hunt, but a great way to connect with nature and the people he cares about most, especially his sons.

Paul is humbled by the trust of his fellow Michiganders, and is thrilled to represent them in our nation’s capital.”

Peter J. Lucido graduated from Detroit College of Law (1988), now known as Michigan State University College of Law, nearly 30 years ago.

Before earning his law degree, Peter had earned his master’s degree in business from Central Michigan University and his licenses in insurance, real estate and securities. Peter was the founder and president of one of Macomb County’s largest law firms. When Peter began practicing law, nearly 30 years ago, his first hire was a military veteran who is still working for the law firm today! Peter is a Lifetime and Patriot Life Member of the National Rifle Association of America. He values these membership and is an avid participant in the organization. Recently, he received the NRA’s Defender of Freedom award for the year 2017.

Peter J. Lucido was elected as State Representative for the 36th District in November of 2014, and he was humbled to be overwhelmingly re-elected in November 2016. He has been a fierce advocate for his district as well as all of Macomb County. He looks forward to continuing to be a strong voice for a brighter tomorrow for all the residents and families of Macomb County as he runs for the 8th Senate District seat in 2019. When I first arrived at High Rack Ranch on Friday night, I was introduced to the chef, Jacob, and our guides, Devin and Curtis. The first thing we did was sit down to dinner; Jacob had cooked an amazing pork tenderloin. After dinner, we explored the ranch, got settled in our rooms, and went to bed knowing it would be an early morning.

I woke up at 6:00 AM the next morning to get ready to go out to the woods. We had a quick breakfast and headed out. It was about 7:00 by the time we got to our blind. We spooked several deer on the way to the blind. Shortly after sunrise, a good-sized shooter buck stepped out about fifteen yards away and repeatedly sniffed our footprints. It was too close to the blind to open the window and get the gun ready; eventually the deer walked away. As we were watching other bucks bedded down at about 350 yards, Devin pointed out the original buck had returned about ten yards to the right of the blind. It slowly worked its way up the very edge of the woods on our right. The buck started to come out of the woods, so Devin grunted at

it, causing the deer to look at us and run away. After about 30 minutes, the buck returned again about 300 yards away straight ahead of us. The buck, or Sneaky Pete as we nicknamed him, began to work his way toward us. Eventually Pete was in shooting range, but still walking straight toward us; he would not turn broadside! When Pete was within 30 yards, he started quickly walking to the woods at the right. I moved to put the gun out that window, and waited for Pete to appear. He did and began walking on the ridge about forty yards away. When Pete got to a clear shooting lane, Devin grunted until he finally stopped, and I shot. Pete ran about ten yards, stopped, stiffened, and fell over. It turns out that I double-lunged the deer. We all started giving each other high-fives in the blind. I did not realize how big Pete was until I got up close to him. He was a 13-point buck and was over 200 pounds.

After shooting my deer, we went back to the lodge and had a “breakfast”, at 12:30ish. We relaxed for the rest of the day watching football and enjoying the ranch. Saturday night we took a deer run just before sunset. Sunday morning we packed up to head home. SCI Flint Jim George Memorial Scholarship The Safari Club International, Flint Regional Chapter along with friends and family of Jim George are proud to announce a scholarship fund has been created in his memory. Jim was a long time supporter of our chapter and he loved the outdoors and the lifelong friendships made while hunting. Jim especially enjoyed campfire hunting tales, cooking and camaraderie of friends during the hunt. This year there will be (2) $500 scholarships awarded at the SCI Flint Awards Banquet on August 3, 2018. One scholarship will be awarded to a person sponsored by a chapter member. The other scholarship will be advertised at area schools and awarded to a member of the general public.

Judging: The Jim George Scholarship Committee will judge all applications and essays. The decision of the committee is final.

Africa…….. My wife Alice and I were warned before we made our first trip to South Africa in 2008 that we would likely be planning a return trip during our flight home. Actually, that was not quite true for us. We began anticipating another visit to Africa well before that. Traveling into the bush and seeing the many animals in their native habitat was wonderful.

Seeing zebras grazing across the savannah or watching Wildebeests playing was amazing. The sight of giraffes feeding on the tops of thorn trees or with front legs splayed so they can drink meant that we took photo after photo. It was awesome to see giant elephants magically disappear into the bush. How can something that large seemingly vanish? We saw lions in the wild and came to realize why they are called the “king of the beasts”. Yes, for someone who enjoys hunting and the outdoors the country of South Africa is a marvelous place.

While traveling between hunting locations or lodges we also saw some of the parts of South Africa that are not so nice. From a distance we saw the townships and a few of the native schools. From what we observed if you are among the white population life is probably very good. However, if you are black, life is often not so good and many people live in or very near to poverty. One needs to actually see some of the townships to appreciate how awful they really are. Some families live in an 8 x 8 or 8 x 10 shack with a corrugated roof that may or may not have a door. Many live without electricity and water is often only available some distance away. It brings new awareness to the many things that we take for granted that so many others cannot access. While we enjoyed our visit to South Africa immensely, seeing the disparity of lifestyles was painful. We concluded that we should explore opportunities to help during our return trip in April of 2011.

Being a member of Safari Club International, I explored the Blue Bag Program through the SCI Foundation. In this program hunters are encouraged to take a SCI blue bag with them as luggage. The idea is that this bag can be filled with humanitarian supplies for those less fortunate. This seemed like the perfect mechanism for us to do what we wanted, and I set about

investigating how to make it happen. Eva Wilson, Humanitarian Services Mgr and Keith Estes the SafariCare Coordinator for the Flint Chapter gave us great information and got us pointed in the right direction.

Working through our outfitter, Somerby Safaris and Bayala, the lodge where we would stay, we were able to contact the Velakukhanya Primary school in the Zululand District of the Province of Kwa-Zulu

Natal. The school has approximately 450 learners in grades K-7 and is an Eco school. This means that in addition to the normal curriculum the learners also explore the environment, flora and fauna. They are taught how to take care of their environment and why it is important. We contacted Claire Hawkey, the area coordinator for the school, who helped us identify items that the school really needed (which was almost everything) and helped us coordinate our visit. Our initial plan was that Alice and I would do this project on our own. When we mentioned

our plans to a few friends and members of our church the response was often “we would like to help”. Seeing that there was a desire to support the project we promised everyone that if they chose to donate, 100% of their donation would go to the children. Alice and I would pay any transportation expenses and would personally deliver the donations to the children. It

seemed that people were very anxious to help when they knew that their donation would go directly to help people without any administration fees or overhead. We also made a decision that we would take only new items and would not take any clothing. As we made a few contacts and word spread donations began to

come. Our dentist

donated many toothbrushes and toothpastes and helped us buy additional at reduced prices. A local sports supplier who primarily works with schools helped us purchase soccer balls for much less than normal. They also donated pumps to inflate them upon arrival. Office Depot sold us pencils, crayons, scissors and the like for reduced prices. Many people donated money or specific items that were requested for the school. One family donated a large number of Beanie Baby stuffed toys that their children, who had since grown and moved away, had collected as children. They were new and most still had the tags. Several people donated money specifically for the purchase of school books. Everything donated to the school was purchased here in the U.S. except notebook paper (due to weight) and school books (due to language) which were purchased in South Africa.

While I went to South Africa to hunt the visit to the school was a highlight of the entire trip. We arrived in the school yard a bit before the appointed time to unpack the supplies and make ready for the children. Kids from every class anxiously peered through their windows to see the visitors. All learning came to a complete halt. When we were finally ready the children lined up in the school yard by grade. Each received a bag with note paper, pencils, tooth paste and a tooth brush. Each also received a few pieces of hard candy. They needed a reason for the tooth brush, after all! The rest of the supplies were given to the

teachers for use as needed. The soccer balls were a huge hit as were the Frisbees. The smaller children each received a beanie baby stuffed toy. The looks on their faces as they accepted the beanie babies were priceless. It was especially touching when they finally understood that the toys were theirs to keep. They actually had something that really belonged to them. These children have virtually nothing. Often they share pencils or other very basic supplies because there is so little. Not only do these children have nothing to do school work many are also orphans. The HIV epidemic has hit the area very hard.

While assembled the children sang several songs for us and to me the finest choir I have ever heard was no more beautiful than the sound of those young voices singing for all they were worth. Smiles were everywhere among the both learners and the teachers. It was at this point that I realized we had received far more than we had given.

About this time it was noon and time for the learners to have lunch. Lunch consisted of a small helping of beans and rice prepared with water that the teachers and staff had brought with them and cooked over a fire. You see, the school has no electricity or water. While the kids had lunch I stood in the middle of the school yard by myself thinking how blessed we were to have experienced this visit. As I stood there alone a small boy came up to me and wanted to shake my hand. Then another and another and another. Soon I was surrounded by laughing, smiling children all wanting to shake my hand. Not one hand was missed and I had the best time of anyone.

I couldn’t help but think of the story of the widow’s mite in the Bible where Jesus points out the poor widow who puts two coins in the box. In the story many others in the temple had given far more money

out of their wealth but the widow with her two coins had given all she had. In this case we had given to the children out of our abundance but the children gave us all they had. Yes, we had brought much needed supplies and toys. The children with their smiles, their handshakes, their hugs and their laughter had given us far

better gifts. They had given us gifts that we will remember for a lifetime.

1. Upgrading your hunt, while not required, is certainly appreciated by our donors. If you do not want to add another animal, consider bringing along a friend. This really helps out these outfitters and hunting companies that are trying to help us! With few exceptions, these donors are not wealthy philanthropists, but rather they donate to help wildlife, ensure the future of our sport, and generate new business for themselves. Please do what you can to help!

2. If you buy a hunt at our auction that the donor fails to provide for you, through no fault of your own,we will make arrangements for a replacement hunt or we will issue you a credit. If you simply find it inconvenient to go on the dates available, or change your mind for some reason, then it is to be worked out between you and the outfitter. The buyer is responsible for communicating directly with the outfitter to confirm dates and details.

3. Different hunts include or specify different things, such as meals, lodging, transportation, weapon type, (gun, bow, or either), available dates, etc. Please read the descriptions carefully.As a general rule, hunting licenses are not included, unless on an enclosed game ranch. On Canadian hunts, there may be a Goods and Services Tax added to the selling price of the donated hunt (approximately 7%).

4 We do our best to solicit donated hunts only from competent outfitters. However, we do not guarantee the quality or success of any hunt purchased at this auction. All of this said, it is important to note that hunts purchased at our auction generally go very well, with both the donor and the buyer being well satisfied. Certain trips such as mountain hunts or spot and stalk hunts require a high level of physical fitness to maximize the opportunity for success. Other trips, such as game ranch hunts,are not physically demanding.

5. Please report the results of your donated hunt on the form included in your buyer’s packet. We really would like to know how it went. We also would like to encourage all buyers to submit photos and/or a complete story for publication in our chapter’s newsletter.

6. All sales and prizes are subject to state and federal taxes including sales tax.

7. If you are unable to attend our live auction in person and wish to place bids for live auction items, you may submit a bid online by establishing an account and providing payment information through our third party online auction representative. One of our representatives will then try to purchase your items of choice at the lowest price, but never for more than the top amount that you indicate.
