FAREWELL 2018 When preparing my speech for Awards Day I looked back over the year to de-termine the theme I would take. I started with a couple of different ideas but ultimately they did not gel.

It was a year of so many positives and high achievements so it should have been easy, but it wasn’t. Whilst the year was amazing there was an underlying sadness. The tragic loss of Jackie and the number of families touched by major illness made it a difficult year. With adversity comes strength but I do pray for a more up-lifting 2019. STAFFING CHANGES As the year comes to an end, I would like to take the opportunity to update you on further staffing changes.

Leaving us at the end of the year will be: Richard Fogarty Dean of Students Rob Roughly Junior School Rossi Moore Head of Arts/Art teacher Tania van Wijk Psychologist Isobel Martin Senior School Bronwyn Crane Senior School

We thank all these staff who have contributed to the life of the school and the wider Charters Towers community and wish them well for the future.

We welcome back Claire Bowley who returns from maternity leave and wish Marilyn Toohey all the best as she takes some well- de-served Long Service Leave. Tonya Peagham will move back to Junior School to cover Mr Roughly’s de-parture. Renee Smith, who has moved back to Charters Towers, will take on a junior secondary role and we welcome Caitlyn Oberg who joins the staff as an art teach-er.

It is the sign of a mature school when senior roles can be filled by candidates from within. It therefore gives me great pleasure to an-nounce that Kylie Kempster will be the new Head of Arts and Wendy Fleming will be the Dean of Stu-dents.

We are still recruiting for a Psy-chologist and a replacement Year 10,11,12 Co-ordinator.

CHRISTMAS WISHES This will be my last opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas. Stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all when we return in 2019.

Deputy Ian Dietrich The sounds of summer … As this edition of our newsletter is published the sounds of summer are being heard – test cricket, Christmas carols and people talk-ing about holidays. To quote a well-known musical “these are a few of my favourite things”. These are, however, accompanied by the sounds of busy teachers finalising marking and reporting, staff com-pleting end of year paperwork tasks and my sore head ticking away at a timetable for the next calendar year! Staffing for 2019 in the Senior (and Junior) School teaching ranks is well underway. As more and more of the staffing jig-saw puzzle is known, I am able to attempt to do the best I can for our students and staff in the timetable alloca-tions for 2019. Middle and Senior Management staff who have been involved with the recruitment pro-cess over the past month are ex-cited about the additions to our teaching team. Finalised teacher allocations in the Senior School will not be known until the start of the school year in January, as there are often un-foreseen changes to staffing that pop-up over the Christmas break. It was great catching-up with many families during November who travelled to the school for the end of year events and celebra-tions. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child’s educa-tion journey. I wish everyone a blessed, family-filled and relaxing break. Remember the reason for the sea-son.

Dean of School

Karen Storey

Since I last wrote we have recog-nised many of our high achievers in the academic, cultural and sporting pursuits of our school, farewelled our 2018 senior class and an-nounced our leaders for 2019, completed assessments and sat ex-ams which are being busily marked and factored into reporting. Con-gratulations to the worthy prize winners from our Awards Day who are listed elsewhere in the newslet-ter. For students, parents and staff this has been an extremely busy last few weeks. As this is the final newsletter for the year I would like to commend those students who have ‘stuck it out ‘til the end’ and also thank staff for their commit-ments to the high demand of set-ting and marking assessments and finalising reports.

I would like to leave you with a few general reminders in preparation for the 2019 school year. Classes resume on Wednesday 30 January 2019, with the boarders travel day being Tuesday 29 January. Formal uniforms are required to be worn on the first day of classes and as is traditional, the Prefect Induction has been scheduled for the after-noon of Wednesday 30 January. Parents and friends are invited and more than welcome to attend. Please ensure that students return to School with all required articles of uniform and equipment required for classes. It is recommended that students just bring a couple of books and their writing equipment for the first day until they receive timetables.

The first Saturday of Term 1 will see students dive into the swim-ming season with our House Swim-ming trials to be held at the town pool. Details of these trials will be communicated to students in their tutor groups and House meetings on day 1, Term 1, 2019.

Until next year, I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Dean of Students Richard Fogarty 2018 Student Leaders I must firstly acknowledge the hard work and contribution of the Year 12 Student Leaders of 2018. Their contribution and effort throughout the year was signifi-cant and speaks for itself. In a year that saw the year and school group face extreme adversity I was humbled to see a determina-tion to continue to push the All Souls St Gabriels philosophy. The results throughout the year are testament to their level of commit-ment and are unparalleled. They include: Cross County overall aggre-

gate winners Athletics overall aggregate

winners Swimming overall aggregate

winners Since the inception of overall ag-gregate trophies All Souls St Gabri-els has not previously held all tro-phies at the same time. Much of a schools public success can only be achieved through the work that is done behind the scenes. The con-tributions that the student leader-ship team has made are valuable and much appreciated by all. I wish you all well in your future en-deavors. Student Leaders 2019 After an extensive selection pro-cess the 2019 Student Leaders have been selected. I would like to congratulate and announce the following student leadership posi-tions in 2019. I am sure this group will uphold the values of our school. Final Phoenix Rising This will be my final contribution to All Souls St Gabriels Phoenix ris-ing after our family made the diffi-cult decision to return to New Zea-land to be closer to family. I have come to deeply respect and care for those in the All Souls St Gabri-els community. It is refreshing in an age of modern change to find an educational institution that still upholds traditional values such as integrity, respect, honesty and manners. Our family has thor-oughly enjoyed ourselves and we wish you all well in the future. To all students, enjoy the break and good luck for the 2019 year.

English Report Charlie Thomson Head of English It has been another busy and exciting period for the English department. This term, the Year 9s have been ana-lysing various protest songs, poetry and the cultural elements of hip-hop. The students have created some excel-lent posters demonstrating their creativity and understanding of the various songs analysed this term. Sarah Mil-ton took her knowledge of poetry and rapping to the next level as she entered the national Tax, Super and You Competition facilitated by the ATO. Sarah was one of 5 students to make the final shortlist for her age group and the overall winners of the competition will be announced later this week. Our Year 8 English classes were fortunate to have former ABC journalist Jayne Cuddihy visit recently. Jayne re-vealed some tricks of her journalistic trade to help students write feature articles of their own. Jayne also shared some intriguing articles by some of her favourite writers that included topics about life in Kenya and experiences of post-traumatic stress disorder. The Year 7s were able to utilise some of their knowledge of business structures from their HASS studies to pro-duce a radio advertisement and business pitch. All of the students enjoyed being involved in the HASS Business Expo.

Bro Nathan-James

2019 Chapel Prefect Elect Congratulations to Casey Flana-gan, Tennant Creek NT, on his ap-pointment as the 2019 Chapel Pre-fect. The role of Chapel Prefect has evolved and expanded over the course of the last 5 years. It has meant that the incumbent now fills a significant leadership position in the School. Conse-quently, the appointee must exhib-it strong leadership skills and abili-ties as well as demonstrate a com-mitment to the organisation and running of the Chapel. Casey first started serving in the Chapel as a boat boy and then went on to be a thurifer. He often noted where there would be gaps in the serving team and brought them to my at-tention as well as offering sugges-tions. Casey easily engages with people and clearly has the respect of younger students and his peers and can gain their cooperation to complete tasks. I look forward to serving alongside Casey in 2019.

Farewell to Connor, Chapel Prefect 2018 Connor served as an exemplary Chapel Prefect. Like his immediate predecessors, Connor made the position his own. That is, he looked for opportunities to further develop the position. He paid care-ful attention to detail and always showed natural empathy and con-cern for others. Connor could al-ways be relied upon to look out for others around him and provide people with a listening ear or an encouraging word. It is easy to see the apple does not fall far from the tree. Tracy Rose, is also a person of great spirit, a kind, compassionate and caring woman who willingly gives of herself to others. Over the course of her in-volvement with ASSG Tracy has been a friend, mother, mentor and guide to not only her son, but to Connor’s friends. I am particularly grateful for kindness and care she offered me.

Thanks for Matilda, Chapel Prefect 2018 Thanks to Matilda Peagham for her service as Junior School Chap-el Prefect for 2018. Matilda took on the role of Chapel Prefect with determination. She actively lead the Chapel services each week, ensuring students were allocated tasks. Matilda always brought a big smile and great sense of hu-mour to Chapel each week. We look forward to welcoming you to senior school in 2019.

Mass of Godspeed Each year we meet in the Chapel to farewell our graduating class at the Mass of Godspeed. At this time we recognise the hard work put in by both students and staff to pre-pare our seniors for the transition from School to further education or employment. We trust that through their time at All Souls St Gabriels School those graduating will have been prepared not only academically but socially as well.

Tips to Connect to Thrive Social relationships support good mental and physical health. Although students are looking forward to time at home with family, many will also miss their friends, or may be experiencing changes in their friendships as some students move onto life after Year 12. Try these tips to stay healthy and connected over the Christmas holidays, and enjoy better interactions with the people you encounter, so you can feel the benefits of positive connection and build new friendships.

1. Think positive. Worries about social situations can make you overthink your interactions. Don ’t dwell on worries about how you are perceived – shift your focus to the other person or the topic of conversa-tion.

2. Forget comparison. Don ’t be concerned if others appear to have more or better friends than you. Quality and enjoyment matter more than quantity. Savour the moments of connection, wherever you can find them.

3. Expect change. Circumstances can leave us vulnerable to a sense of isolation. Relationships shift over time and we may lose touch with friends who were once important. Accepting change as normal can help you adjust.

4. Tolerate discomfort. Anxiety may cause you to avoid socialising. Understand that awkwardness does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Reach out to others and your skills will improve with time.

5. Listen well. Practice listening. Ask questions and really listen to the answers, rather than just waiting for a turn to talk. Respond warmlyto people’s experiences through your posture, facial expressions and words.

6. Rehearse. Out of practice w ith chat? Spend some time thinking about questions you can use when conversation stalls. You might ask if the other person has travelled far, visits this museum often, or liked the show.

7. Say names. Using someone ’s name when you know it demonstrates caring. Offer yours. Ask after their loved ones, or pick up a previous conversation topic, such as their pet, to show you have paid attention.

8. Go offline. Social media helps many people, but it can also increase disconnection. Ensure you have a healthy offline life. Perhaps invite trusted online friends to an offline meeting to build your relationship.

9. Chat to strangers. Unexpected moments of connection greatly improve your mood. Share a smile and eye contact with a stranger, or chat to a fellow commuter. Rise to the challenge of finding common ground with strangers.

10. Help. Helping someone gives a feel-good rush. Create a bond with someone by offering help, or asking for it. Something as little as assistance with a bag or holding a lift can help people feel seen and cared for.

11. Join in. Embrace opportunities to join, volunteer or participate. This connects you to other peo-ple, unites you in a shared activity, and provides an easy way to get to know people better.

12. Reconnect. Reach out to friends from your past. Many people welcome such efforts and the feel-ing that you care. If you plan a catch-up, why not revisit a place or experience where you shared happy mem-ories.

13. Manage stress. Everybody has some social situations they dread. Practice simple stress manage-ment techniques, such as breathing deeply and slowly, to help keep your stress in check through awkward moments.

14. Practice, practice, practice. Relationship skills can be learnt. Don ’t be discouraged. Remember that social connections are good for you.

On behalf of the Pastoral Care Team I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Fogarty for his role as our Pastoral Care Team leader, and wish him our best on his return home to NZ. We would also like to thank Mrs Fleming for her time as Senior Secondary Year Level Coordinator this year, and congratulate her on her appoint-ment as the Dean of Students and Pastoral Care Team Leader. Lastly, as I depart ASSG at the end of this year I would like to say a big thank you for allowing me to be a part of such an amazing community; my time at ASSG has definitely been a highlight in my career and so much more than a job.

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator There have been a number of school and community events that have kept the music department busy right until the end of term. As always, the students have worked hard and been committed to every event. Launch of the Kennedy Regiment Legacy The Kennedy Regiment Waltz is a piece of music that was composed during World War One by the conductor of the Kennedy Regiment Band. ASSG was supplied with the music, originally written for solo piano, in 2014 and was asked to have a band perform it for the ANZAC Centenary Project. This led to us being asked to perform it again this year at the launch of the Kennedy Regiment Legacy - the opening ceremony for the refurbished WWI wing at the Zara Clark Museum. The band did a commendable job and received a lot of positive feedback after the cere-mony, including this (paraphrased) from one of the museum volunteers: “The kids did a good job. We didn’t ex-pect it to be very good, but we enjoyed it and we’re a harsh bunch of critics.” Awards Day The ASSG Awards Day was a busy one for the music students. Stage Band, Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, a combined Junior and Senior School Choir, and Senior Wind Ensemble all performed during the ceremony, with a number of students being involved in every item. The feedback from the audience was all positive, with compli-ments on the standard they played at and the variety of repertoire and arrangements performed. Arts Retrospective Retro day saw the final performance from the instrumental music department for the year, with Jam Band taking to the stage to provide some entertainment for the afternoon. This was followed by a once-only appearance by a group of teachers taking to the stage to perform Hit the Road, Jack. The stars of the afternoon were Mr Dietrich with his enthusiastic triangle solo and Ms Martin on the bagpipes! Farewell This year, we say goodbye to two Year 12 students from band – Harry Kempster and Rachel Hall. Both students have been an integral part of the music program and their commitment and the standard they played at have been an excellent example for the younger students. We wish them all the very best for the future. Australia Day As a result of the many events our bands and choirs have performed at in the community this year, the ASSG Band and Choir Program has been nominated for the Australia Day Young Cultural Award. The award recipient will be announced at the Australia Day ceremony that is to be held on Friday evening, 25th January, 2019. All stu-dents involved in Concert Band, Stage Band and Vocal Ensemble are invited to attend the ceremony (in formal uniform) to represent the school. Thanks Thank you to all students who have shown fantastic commitment and have put in many hours at rehearsals and performances this year. To have a group of students that I know I can count on to be at every event, even if it means rearranging their own personal plans to do so, is something I’m very grateful for. You should all be proud of the standard you have reached this year, individually and in your ensemble work. Have a Merry Christmas, rest up, and I’ll see you next year to do it all over again!

Rural Activities Lionel Hartig & Charlee Keleher Rural Activities Co-ordinator & Year 11 What a full on year it has been, beginning with the Cattle Club herd growing over the Christmas holidays in2017 with 6 of our cows producing 6 healthy calves, who now wear the School’s brand. In May, a selected number of students and myself travelled to Beef Week and gained experience working with some of the studs, showing their cattle. The students were on a high when one of our school teams got into the finals of stud judging and two of the boys were into the final of the commercial judging. This all required a mighty effort for our members, having to stand up in front of thousands of people from all over the world and explain why they picked the cattle they did. They also made the final against 2-3 hundred other young judges, which deserves a lot of recognition. Our next outing was Winton Show where once again all the members did exceptional work in the handling and judging classes, all coming home with places. Around came the Charters Towers show, which our ASSG Cattle Club helped organize and run. Thank you to the Finger and Stevens families for their support and trophy dona-tions; we really appreciate your help. Once again, our members did us proud with winning the School trophy add-ing on to our winning streak of now 3 times in a row. Also taking out the beast of the show, steer of the show, commercial heifer of the show, and stud heifer of the show, cow and calf of the show, we were understandably pleased with our efforts. During the Charters Towers show, members of both the Cattle club and Equestrian team showed the pride they have in our School. This continued on campus as we increase the productivity and appeal ofour rural area with trees, both fruit and native being planted, and the constant effort put in to keep the lawn looking its best. Many of our members say that the rural area is their home away from home at Souls. Over the last few weeks, the Equestrian team has had the pleasure of having Miss Isobel Martin join us in the af-ternoons to learn some basics about horse riding. One afternoon, we took the horses out for a ride in the paddock which gave them a well-deserved break. During the year 6 Orientation, some interested students visited the rural activities area to be shown around. It is great to see some interest amongst the younger students. On the 10th of November, the awards night for the Equestrian Team and Cattle club was held in the Home Eco-nomics room. A big thank you goes out to Ms Kate Thomson who prepared us a lovely meal. On Sunday, the 11th, the Rural team had the pool to themselves for some well deserved relaxation which also brought plenty of enjoy-ment. Many members were very successful during the year and received the following awards;

Junior School

Tina Akers Head of Junior School

As I reflect on 2018, I have a deep feeling of gratitude and heartfelt thanks.

I am grateful for our students who approach each day with joy and enthusiasm and greet others with a smile. Students who delight in the opportunity to make the most of every occasion to learn. I hope, as 2018 comes to a close, they will take with them fond memories of the learning and friendships they have made in the classrooms, in the playground, on the stage, on the sports field and through the countless other activities they have shared together this year.

Our students have all achieved many successes throughout the year, which have increased every-one’s pride and sense of belonging to our School. Recently we recog-nised the learning journey our Year 6 students have taken in the Junior School, and acknowledged student academic, sporting and cultural achievements at the Preliminary Prize Giving and Awards Day cere-monies.

We all can feel immensely proud of how the Junior School students have lived up to the ASSG code. A code which reminds us all, that a student who wears the ASSG uni-form is a person who is respectful and is: Always learning, Staying safe, Serving others and Going for-ward.

All Souls St Gabriels Junior School continues to grow each year, due to the passionate contribution and strong relationships between stu-dents, staff and the wider commu-nity. We are grateful for the many ways parents, families and friends who, in their own very busy lives, find time to support the School and our community in so many ways. Parents who put their trust and confidence in our teachers. Parents who express their thanks, their af-firmation and their encouragement. We have appreciated the many ways the wider School community has supported our School and our endeavours to educate the stu-dents in mind, body and spirit.

I am thankful for the privilege of working alongside an exceptional team of dedicated professionals; people who enjoy working with children and want the very best for

PAGE 14 ISSUE NO 14/2018 5 DECEMBER 2018

each and every one of their stu-dents. We are a strong team who work well together; we have readi-ly shared our skills and knowledge and actively helped each other be-come better at what we do. I thank the staff who have all given so much of themselves for all our students. A staff who are highly committed and have nurtured the students in their care to follow their passions and interests, and to always strive to achieve their per-sonal best.

The School community were thor-oughly entertained by the amazing performances of each Junior School class (and staff) at the ‘Greatest Show’ – a production that came together in the last couple of weeks of the term. Thank you Mrs Heuir and staff for the inspiration, enthusiasm and energy – the set-ting was awesome and the perfor-mances fantastic. Our thanks are also extended to Mrs Moore and the Arts department for providing

some of the props, Mr Sellars and Miss Croker for looking after the sound and lighting, the mainte-nance crew, and of course, the many family and friends who shared this wonderful evening together.

We look forward to sharing many more experiences, challenges and opportunities with our students and the wider School community during 2019. On behalf of all the Junior School staff, I wish everyone a very enjoyable, restful and safe holiday.

May your Festive Season be blessed with much joy and happiness.

Sport News

Natasha Johnson Secondary Sports Co-ordinator As the school year draws to a close I would like to offer my thanks to all of the staff, parents, students and mem-bers of the All Souls St Gabriels School Community who have provided not only their assistance but donated their time to our sporting teams this year. It has been a pleasure working with you all and I know that students have appreciated all of your efforts and involvement. 2018 has been a very successful year for All Souls St Gabriel’s with respect to sport. We not only defended the In-ter-School Cross Country School Championship but increased our tight grip on the shield for the 13th year in a row. We also defended our Inter-School Athletics Championship, once again taking a clean sweep of all the tro-phies. To top it off, All Souls St Gabriels School completed the clean sweep of the major sporting carnivals by walking away not only with the Inter-School Swimming Shield for the very first time since its introduction in 2001 but all the minor trophies there were to win at this carnival. The clean sweep of all three major carnivals is also a mean feat in itself and all students and coaching personnel should be very proud of their efforts. In team sports, we won the School Championship Shield for Boys Tennis. Individually, we also shone with 62 students being se-lected in Charters Towers representative teams and 11 students in North Queensland teams. It was lovely to reward many of our high achievers at our Annual Awards Day two weeks ago. A list of the major sporting prize-winners appears elsewhere. A full ASSG calendar for 2019 will be published on the website in due course, however, please note below our key dates for next year. Page Dormitory Davin Marshall Senior Resident As 2018 comes to an end and I re-flect on the year, I feel we have created something special in Page Dormitory. It has been a few years in the making and there have been a few bumps along the way, but the culture in the dormitory this year was exceptional. We had a great leadership group and will-ingness among the younger boys to follow good role models and to take ownership of their behaviour. Boarding is increasingly becoming a more pleasant place to be and although kids will still get home-sick and miss home, as they get older they really enjoy the board-ing experience. Some things that stood out to me this year; Our senior group and the leader-ship they bought, as well as an ability to still have plenty of fun.

Winning the House Cup!!! Having next year’s School Captain picked from our Dormitory.

The tolerance the older boys al-ways show towards the younger boys. This never fails to amaze me.

The tidiness of the dormitory this year. Always commented on and appreciated by “Granny” our awesome cleaner.

The boys are always out in the common room doing things to-gether or outside playing touch.

The number of push-ups done for swearing.

And last but not least how hum-bled I am by the trust, you as par-ents, show by entrusting your pre-cious sons into our care. That trust is never taken for granted. Thank you for a great year and for those returning, rest up and come back refreshed. For those depart-ing, we wish you all the best, and we know that you will continue to be fine young men.

Ramsay Dormitory Rhett Butler Senior Resident Finally, the end of the year is up-on us! The final few weeks of school followed a similar trend to the rest of the year with a hectic schedule. Ramsay was once again right in the thick of it. A few weeks ago we had our an-nual awards day which officially wrapped up the year for our Year 12 students. Both the Preliminary Prize Giving and Awards Day were fantastic events but the highlight was of course the valedictory din-ner. Much fun was had at the an-nual event and our Ramsay boarders looked extremely sharp in their outfits. A big thank you must go to Ramsay’s Year 11 stu-dents who worked tirelessly as volunteer servers. Week 7 was the final exam block for the year, meaning a lot of stu-dents headed home on the final weekend. This is always a hectic period for dorm staff as we sort out all our boarders and dorms for the end of year. Thank you to all of the parents who assisted in making it easier for us by giving early travel details, small things like this make our lives so much easier. On a personal note this is the end of my first year as head of Ram-say dorm and I must say it has been an interesting ride so far. I would like to say thank you to all my boys for making it so memo-rable and for putting your trust and confidence in me. It has been a pleasure to have these boys in my care and I am confident we are heading in the right direction for the coming year.

Feetham Dormitory

Jake Diery Senior Resident Finally the end of the year is upon us! The final few weeks of school followed a similar trend to the rest of the year with a hectic schedule. Feetham was once again right in the thick of it. During the last few weeks we said goodbye to our 2018 Year 12 students with an emotional God Speed Chapel Service and a lovely Valedictory dinner on Friday night. This is always a sad part of the year but also one that is very rewarding for myself. It was a pleasure to be able to say I got to see Tim Ievers, Toby Rankine, Dar-cy Meehan, Ben Wilkinson, Matthew Muston, Savon Johnson, Tom Durkin and Kent Tanks all grow into decent and mature young adults, who are well and truly ready to face the challenges ahead. I must say a big thank you to this group for their leadership in the dormitory this year and all the best for what comes next for you all, you guys will be missed. We have also had our Awards Day which a lot of our Feetham boarders received awards for their academic and sporting achievements. I would like to congratulate everyone who received one. Well done to the Year 11 boys who have received leader-ship titles for next year. We have been lucky once again in Feetham Dormitory to have both our Year 11 boys handed leadership positions. Patrick Washington will be our Feetham House Captain and Casey Flanagan will be our Chapel Prefect, well done to you both and good luck. I would like to say a big thank you to all the Feetham Dorm parents, thanks for the support throughout the year. I hope you all have a great break and enjoy having the boys at home, have a Merry Christ-mas and a Happy New Year.

Another year done and dusted and Becket dorm has had yet another great term. The girls can all go home now and enjoy some time for themselves. As always, the last three weeks have been very busy. Becket and Alban decided to hold a joint Secret Santa/Christmas par-ty, which was enjoyed by all. All the girls have had the chance to go on the Barra Park trip which Dawn had organized on the last two free weekends of term, many barra were caught and lots of fun was had. All the exams were fin-ished last week so the girls will be looking forward to a little rest. I would like to wish Katie Jarmey, Lissabelle Smith and Angela Jones all the best and they will be missed come next year. It is always a sad time of the year saying goodbye to them but we are confident they are ready to go and make their mark.

Our Seniors for 2019 are Mackenzie Clark, Angela Chevathun and Rae Evans all wonderful girls that are all looking forward to being Seniors next year. Last Tuesday night Al-ban and Becket held its first Senior meeting with the Year 11 girls, the girls have some great ideas for next year and are eager to start putting some in place. We have also found out the leaders for next year. Mackenzie Clark will be School Vice-Captain as well as Becket House Captain and Angela Chevathun is a Prefect. I wish you girls all the best and look forward to working with you next year. That’s it for now. Enjoy your holi-days, Xmas and New Year. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2019

Chad Dormitory

Yvonne Schaefer Senior Resident We are in the middle of bathroom renovations, so our students have been shipped over to Alban for their last week. Chad has had a successful year with once again securing the House Cup. Congratulations to all the girls who worked so hard to win it again. A big thanks to Pia Taylor for organising teams, stu-dents and props for the Chad girls. We have had our first meeting with the Year 11 girls to start and get organised for next year. I am excited about the Seniors that we will have in 2019, they are very fair and will work together to do the best for our dormitory. Thank you for entrusting your beautiful girls with us this year. We wish all our families a wet, and wonderful Christmas with family and friends, and a Happy New Year. We will be back to do it all again in 2019.

Alban Dormitory

Vanessa Herring Senior Resident Where to begin? It’s been a de-manding few weeks since our last newsletter and so much has hap-pened. In week 5, Alban accom-modated 4 new students who’ll start their boarding journey as Year 7’s, in 2019: Kayla Pedersen, Millie Goodwin, Layla Bailey and Ellah Dixon. Wynita Deem will al-so join the girls – Wynita has been with us for a year already, having just graduated from Year 6 at our Junior School. It was won-derful to meet our new juniors, and I’d like to say ‘thank you’ to all our girls for making them feel welcome. Our Year 11 girls did an outstanding job as ‘buddy’ part-ners, and these relationships will serve as a solid foundation mov-ing forward.

Our Recreation Officer, Dawn McGill, had her plate full this term as well. Dawn organised two trips to the Barra Fun Park in Towns-ville. Everyone had a fantastic day out and managed to return to us unscathed and sunburn free! We’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to Dawn. You do an amazing job, and we’re all very grateful for everything you do!

Our School Cattle Club held their awards night on Friday 9th No-vember. Congratulations to April Dixon who received an award for “Most Improved” and Charlette & Wynita Deem for a “Great Effort”. Congratulations girls – well de-served.

Becket and Alban joined forces to host our annual Green Dorm Se-cret Santa Party on the 13th. It’s been unanimously decided that it was a party to rival all dormitory parties! Our seniors did a great job of organising games and en-tertainment for the evening. So, the gauntlet has been thrown down… next year’s seniors need to improve on 2018’s party. Good luck girls!

Our 2018 seniors are done and dusted! It was a hectic couple of weeks for them, wrapping up this chapter of their lives. So we say to you Sarah, Tayah, Tayla and Tahlia, all the very best for wher-ever your road leads! Congratula-tions class of ’18!

So, it’s out with the old and in with the new. You will all be aware by now, of our new school leaders. And we’re very proud to say that a few of these girls belong to Alban. Congratulations go to: Amber Aspinall ‘School Cap-

tain’ 2019. Charlee Keleher ‘House Cap-

tain’ and ‘Rural Activities Prefect’ 2019.

Grace Bailey ‘Prefect’ 2019. We wish you all the very best in your leadership positions for 2019. We, along with Jakarhlee Clow (our 4th Alban Senior), pledge to support you as best we can. (Formal introductions to follow in 2019) Two of our star Netball players, Summah and Savanna Beale, at-tended a Netball training camp in Townsville recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. This is the first of three camps they’ll com-plete, and hopefully this will result in selection to play at state level. Well done girls and all the best!

Finally, I’d like to say “thank you” to all the parents, families and girls who’ve been so supportive this year. I’m very grateful for your pa-tience and understanding as I nav-igated my way through my first year as a Residential Dormy! I wish everyone a wonderful Christ-mas holiday. Enjoy having your daughter’s home again for a while, and I look forward to another fan-tastic year in 2019! Until then, take care.
