What a Picture!

Our Year 10 Photography students have been enjoying workshops held by the

Impressions Gallery, Bradford. The team who came into school to install the

enormous Red Saunders photographic art (which can be viewed around school)

have led the workshops based on the artwork.

The workshops used the idea of tableaux, as created by Red Saunders. The photographic tableaux depict notable historic events and recreate scenes which took place before the invention of photography.

The Year 10 photographers staged historical scenes and both students and staff dressed up in all sorts of costumes, from Viking to Victorian. They then posed in the scenes in front of a white background. These images will then be edited and manipulated with an end result similar to the large artworks around school.

As you can see, they enjoyed themselves in front of and behind the lens!

Red Saunders is a professional photographer who combines his photographic practice with cultural, artistic, musical, and political activism.

A former member of the 60's underground theatre group CAST, he made his name with nearly two decades of work for the ground breaking Sunday Times colour supplement, until he ended his association following the Wapping dispute of 1986-7. He was a founder member and activist with the Rock Against Racism campaign from 1976 onwards.

An arson attack destroyed his studio and life work in 1994 and he did not return to photography until the end of the decade, turning instead to film-making.

Well done to Dominic Coy (7SP) who has qualified to represent Yorkshire and Humberside in the 2014 Triathlon Inter Regional Championships at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham on Friday 22nd August. He was selected after finishing 2nd Tristar 2 boy overall in the series of 6 triathlon events held over the past couple of months. The race is run under ITU rules and will include a dive start and draft legal bike so he’ll be putting in a lot of extra swim, bike and run practice over the coming weeks to do his Yorkshire kit proud. Good luck Dom!

Congratulations to Lucy Haines (10VEB) and Lucy Jacques (10AJH) who competed in the Eldwick Gala Fell Race on Saturday 28th June. Great to see our students doing so will in community events!

Take-a-Break...for the last time! We look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible for the final take-a-break of the year. Come in and chat over tea, coffee and a biscuit, Thursday 24th July 10am in the Lower Library. This really is Gillian’s ‘Grand Depart’!

Super Tutor Group Update

The cut off for collation and counting of points and certificates is Friday 11th July. The latest standings are:

7LG with 7LAM, 7SL and 7SP closing the gap! 8HM have now overtaken 8JRW!

9BJS with 9SCB snapping at their heels! 10PPB chased by 10GS

Save the date! There will be a non uniform day on Friday 11th July for all students in Years 7-10. Money raised (£1 per student) will be split between the local St John's Ambulance who are kindly supporting a number of days/activities during Challenge and Celebration week and the Revival Centre in Uganda which students at IGS have been supporting for some time now. 11

JULY

Lost Property Ties, socks, blazers, hoodies, full PE kits and shoes...all are currently lurking in the bottom of the lost property box in the Key Stage 3 Hub and all will be cleared out by 22nd July. We are encouraging students to go and have a rummage and claim their items before they and you

lose them forever!

Does your son or daughter use the I23, I24, I26 or catch a bus near Burley Train Station? We have had a number of calls from members of the public in the last week expressing their concern about student safety as they wait for buses in Burley. We are aware that this area attracts a lot of students and can get quite congested as they wait for the bus, but it also makes it very difficult for other pedestrians and road users to safely navigate around them. Please help us to make students aware that this is an area where buses turn in the road and lots of other vehicles use this stretch of road. We want our students to keep safe by maintaining a good distance from the road and showing consideration to other members of the community.

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE

Thursday July 10th Strike I can now confirm that school will be open for some students next Thursday. Having looked through the timetables, I have made the decision to close the school to all students except those in Years 10 and 12. With a third of our teachers potentially on strike it will be a challenge to ensure two year groups are taught or can engage in worthwhile learning experiences, but we can plan for students in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. School buses will run as normal. We had hoped to include Year 7, but over half their teachers may be missing next Thursday and safe supervision for so many students is not possible. I understand many of you will have some of your children in school and some not, others will have none in at all; we have tried to manage a difficult situation to allow partial opening and hope you can arrange things around the two year groups who will be attending.

Attendance Measure GCSE Overview Year 10

Red Kite Day 3—Red Kite Alliance Shifts Up A Gear On Friday 27th June we joined over 900 teachers and associate staff gathered at the Harrogate International Conference Centre for one of the biggest school training days our region has ever experienced, in the third biennial staff development day event organised by the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance.

Ilkley Grammar School members of staff joined staff from Harrogate Grammar School, Horsforth School, Malton School, Nidderdale High School, Prince Henry’s Grammar School, Ralph Thoresby School, Rossett School, Roundhay School and South Craven School. The Red Kite Teaching School Alliance is a partnership of 24 Yorkshire schools and institutions, across all phases (primary, secondary, special schools and universities) from inner city locations to rural contexts, that have come together to share their skills, experience, talent and capacity to help improve the learning and achievement of young people across Yorkshire and the Humber. The Red Kite Alliance provides nationally accredited and bespoke leadership, training, support, research and development opportunities to school staff across the region. They have a bank of nationally and regionally recognised experts within the Alliance that can act as a task force to help schools and individuals in need of support. The day gave staff an exciting opportunity to work with colleagues from 11 secondary schools in the partnership across Yorkshire. The theory behind the day was inspired by the marginal learning gains philosophy that underpinned the success of Team GB Cycling at the Beijing and London Olympics: focus on doing a few small things really well; aggregating all these gains together will give staff insightful and practical ideas to implement in their schools, providing a significant impact on teaching and learning.

Attendees were treated to motivational key note speeches from Damian Hughes and Rosie Swale Pope MBE. Damian Hughes is a Professor of Psychology at Manchester University and a former sports psychologist for Manchester United and England Rugby Teams. He works in UK’s schools as well as in international business and sport helping to create winning cultures. Global Adventurer Rosie Swale Pope MBE is recognised as one of the world’s most courageous women of her generation. She is the only person in history to have undertaken a solo unsupported run around our world over nearly 5 years—at 57 years old!

During the day, groups of staff focused on key central tensions faced in schools, including literacy, numeracy, engaging boys, challenging the most able, and using technology to enhance learning. The outcomes of the discussions were showcased in the afternoon sharing the good ideas and solutions that had been collectively created.

Thomas Scott has also just been awarded a First from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. Thomas studied Natural Sciences and specialised in Biological Sciences. He received his degree at a graduation ceremony in Cambridge last Thursday where he was informed that he would be receiving the Swann prize for the best Biology result in the final exams for Caius College.

Class of 2010: First Class! 2010 saw five of our students secure Oxbridge places and 2014 saw them reach the heights: we are very

proud of them!

Ruth Kitchen graduated from Girton College, Cambridge, with a first Class Honours degree in Modern and Medieval Languages and a distinction in spoken Spanish.

Sophie Twelves (who finished Year 13 at IGS in 2010 and then had a gap year) has achieved a BA Hons in Natural Sciences (Genetics) from Emmanuel College Cambridge. Sophie graduated last Friday with a 2:1, which is what she was hoping for, and this has secured her place on a 4 year MRes/PhD programme in Biomedical and Translational Science at King’s College, London, starting in September this year.

Matthew Kirk who also left IGS in 2010 and went on to study at King’s College, Cambridge, has received a First Class BA and Masters in Theoretical Physics. Matthew plans to continue his academic life at Durham University where he will be studying for a PhD in Particle Physics.

Laura Makin, another IGS 2010 leaver, has recently graduated from Magdelene College, Cambridge with a first Class Honours degree in Natural Sciences.

Will Selby, a 2010 leaver, has also secured a First. Will has been studying Spanish and Portuguese at Nottingham University and is due to attend his graduation ceremony later this month.

Putting the Art in Grand Depart! Has anyone seen Alice Vaughan’s (13EM) TDF inspired artwork at Lishman’s Butchers yet?

It was still a work in progress last week with ‘grand’ plans to be finished in time for Saturday and she’s done it!

Mathemagical! Some of our finest Year 9 mathematicians wowed local primary school students this week with their ‘Mathemagical’ event. The visiting students from Burley Woodhead, Burley Oaks, Ashlands, Ben Rhydding, All Saints’ and Addingham Primary all looked on in amazement as the Maths ‘tricks’ were shown to them. Rated by some of the primaries as the ‘best thing they had been to’ and ‘absolutely amazing’ the event is a real favourite with our future IGS students.’

They all left with an understanding of how some of the tricks work and enough knowledge to try them out back at their Primary School.

Lady Gaga Video Shoot On Monday 7th July the Year 12 Media students will be taking on the tough challenge of completing a video shoot in just one day. In previous years there have been remakes of Britney Spears and One Direction videos; this time it’s Lady Gaga’s turn to get the IGS Media treatment, with a comic version of her hit ‘Judas’ planned.

As well as the Media students there will be other Year 12 students, more from Key Stages 3 and 4, and various staff involved and appearing in front of the camera. With Celebration Week imminent, the editing will take a little longer than usual, but all being well the finished video should be viewable on the ‘IGSMediaStudies’ YouTube channel before the end of term. We will also be joined by Helena Beeson, a former IGS Media student who went on to win awards during her time working on a film degree. She will shortly be starting to teach video editing at Sheffield Hallam University, and will be sitting in on Media lessons from Friday the 4th until Thursday the 10th.

Many thanks to parents, students and members of the public who attended the premiere of Dave Burrowes’ documentary feature film on Monday evening, creating a truly vibrant atmosphere. The film features all of the final cuts of the film openings, music videos, magazine ads and digipak (CD) sleeves created by this year’s Media students, as well as giving some insight into the process behind these, whilst aiming to reflect on the nature of student film-making in the digital age. The film also contains a look back at work from the past six years. It will be reedited with the goal of also completing a final cut by the end of term which will be mastered as a DVD and put up on the channel. You can view a 70-second trailer on the ‘IGSMediaStudies’ channel with a title of ‘Queens, Kittens and QR Codes’.

Twitter Made Easy! Our experience of using Twitter this year as a communication tool has been really positive. From interacting with parents, people and businesses in the community, sharing success to joining in the conversation on events at school ...we have been twittering like mad! Many of you have joined us on our journey but understandably some are still a little unsure and wary of the world of social media. Many of you may think ‘What a daft idea, who will be interested in what I have to say?’ (You’d be surprised!) Hope fully this guide will help you get involved in your tweeting!

Need the Basics? A tweet is a message that you will send, along with millions of other people

around the world. You are limited to 140 characters for each tweet; this includes spaces and

symbols A retweet is a tweet that someone has liked; they can share it with their

followers A follower is someone that has subscribed to your tweets...usually because you

are interesting! Each time you tweet your followers see it in their home screen Hashtagging # groups tweets together. If you use the same hashtag as

someone else...it groups them! Trending is when lots of people use the same hashtag at the same time—think

Suarez last week...guaranteed to cause twitter meltdown!

To get going on twitter is as easy as 1,2,3! 1. Set up your profile. On the bar at the top of twitter click settings and start

filling in your profile. The usual photo, bio and design can be created here . Using a great photo or witty description of who you are and what you stand for can make you stand out from the crowd.

2. Follow people with similar interests—look for people within you community or area of interest.

3. Join in the conversation—what’s the worst thing that can happen?
