Malhub scores the upset Julian Herbert/Getty Images NO JUBILATION FOR JOHANNESBURG “It’s very possible he won’t run again.” Those were part of the post-race comments from Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O’Brien after Johannesburg (Hennessy) finished a well-beaten ninth in yesterday’s G1 Golden Jubilee S. on the closing program of the Royal Ascot meeting. Sheikh Hamdan’s Malhub (Kingmambo), a huge 16-1 shot, caused the upset be- neath jockey Kevin Darley to beat Danehurst (GB) (Danehill) by 1½ lengths, but clearly all eyes were on last year’s superhorse and his inability to discover his past glory. The champ was making his first start since finishing an up-the- track eighth in the Kentucky Derby, but disappointed yesterday as the 3-1 favorite. “The reality of it is that at the moment the horse has no more to give,” O’Brien continued. “We’ll take him home and see how he is and if he ever has a chance of mak- ing it back to where he used to be.” (cont p2) Saturday, Royal Ascot, Britain GOLDEN JUBILEE S. He began as a breeder at Cayton Park Stud 30 years ago before moving to Eydon in Northamptonshire. From that base he bred Brocade (GB) (Habitat), a Group 1 winner in France who would go on to produce Barathea and Gossamer. Oth- ers to carry Leigh’s brown and beige silks to success included Infamy (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), who took the GI Rothmans International at Woodbine in 1988; and Markofdistinction (GB) (Known Fact), winner of the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. in 1990. That pair was trained by Luca Cumani, with whom Leigh enjoyed a close and successful relationship over the last two decades. Cumani also handled two of Brocade’s progeny in Bro- catelle (GB) (Green Desert) and Zibilene (GB) (Rainbow Quest), who proved a marker of their breeder’s reputa- tion when reaching 1.7 million guineas and 1.3 million guineas, respectively, at the Tattersalls December Sales in 2000 and 2001. He also bred multiple Group 1 scorer Bosra Sham (Woodman), who sold for 530,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Houghton Sales in 1994. Leigh also campaigned Act One (GB) (In The Wings {GB}), winner last year of the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in November and runner-up to Sulamani (Ire) in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly June 2 for trainer Jonathan Pease. MALHUB MAKES THE GRADE Winner of theListed King Charles II S. over seven furlongs atNewmarket last June, Malhub (Kingmambo) was ninthin the G1 St James’s Palace S. at this meeting beforegetting a break. Not spotted again until the fall, he wasfifth in the Listed Joel S. and seventh in the G2 Chal-lenge S. at Newmarket in October, but showed that hehad overcome a well-documented wind problem whenreturning to break the Yarmouth track record in a condi-tions event nine days ago. Malhub had things practi-cally his own way up front as he raced alone in thecentre of the track in the early stages before passingThree Points (Ire) (Bering {GB}) at the halfway maker.Asserting from there, he always had the call over thatrival and kept quickening all the way to the line to holdoff the staying-on Danehurst (GB) (Danehill). “I felt themile was too far so decided to drop him in trip and givehim one really smart entry over six, and last time hebroke the track record at Yarmouth,” said winningtrainer John Gosden. “He’s had two wind operations sohe’s a testament to Sheikh Hamdan whose faith hasbeen rewarded. The G1 July Cup [at Newmarket July11] would be an obvious place to go as he wants sixand fast ground--that’s got to be his target. You would-n’t see him in the G1 Nunthorpe S. [at York Aug. 22]as that’s for specialist sprinters and one place youwon’t see him is in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye [atLongchamp Oct. 6] in a bog. He could go to Arlington[for the BC Sprint] and personally I think he’ll go on thedirt, but we might want to leave that one as it’s a longway off.” Should he line up in the Newmarket sprint, heis likely to face the runner-up and third, but one whomay miss that race now is Johannesburg (Hennessy),who looks on the brink of retirement. That colt brokewell and raced prominently in third overall until thehalfway at which point he came under pressure toclose. Jockey Michael Kinane was not hard on himwhen he failed to respond with his customary dash andhe soon faded from contention. “We gave him a breakafter Kentucky, but when he came back ready to startworking again, our ground was so bad I was afraid torisk working him,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said. “I’m beingrealistic. When you bottom a horse like him, it’s hard toget him back. Why would you ask him to go and dothat again when he’s just not the horse he was lastyear? If I ever get another Johannesburg, hopefully Iwon’t mess him up again!”

Zindabad made all under jockey Kevin Darley to pro-vide trainer Mark Johnston with his third renewal afterFruits of Love’s dual successes in 1999 and 2000,respectively. A game and tough campaigner from thefront, he beat St Expedit (GB) in the G3 John Porter S.at Newbury Apr. 20 and Boreas (GB) in the G2 York-shire Cup at York May 16. Most recently, he was acreditable third in the G1 Coronation Cup at EpsomJune 7 on soft ground, after Johnston had consideredwithdrawing him on the morning due to the state of theground. Obviously relishing the fast ground this time,he was taken over to the rail from his wide draw tohead Potemkin (Ire) (Ashkalani {Ire}) and travelled welluntil Darley upped the tempo with five furlongs remain-ing. That move proved decisive as Zindabad reachedtop gear in the straight, asserting as Storming Homemoved wide to challenge. Sticking to his guns, hewarded off that pressure and was firmly on top at theline. “He’s so uncomplicated that you can make therunning on him and if they are going quicker than him, they are going too fast,” said Darley. Johnston added,“I’ve said all along this horse can win the CanadianInternational. I’ve shirked the G1 Irish St Leger [at TheCurragh Sept. 14] with this horse because we haveworried about the ground, but at Epsom last time heshowed that if the worse comes to the worst he willhandle the ground.”

Grand Prix de Paris cont.

Traditionally, this contest has been an ideal chancefor those that failed in the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club(French Derby) at Chantilly to bounce back. In the lastdecade, five winners of this had contested that Classicwith only Peintre Celebre having scored at Chantilly in1997. That bodes well for Castle Gandolfo (GoneWest), Khalkevi (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and WithoutConnexion (Ire) (Rainbow Quest), who finished sixth, ninth and 11th, respectively, at Chantilly last time. How-ever, both the fifth-placed Black Sam Bellamy (Ire) andDiaghilev (Ire), who was seventh behind Sulamani (Ire)that day, have subsequently let the form down at RoyalAscot this week. Khalkevi defeated Black Sam Bellamyby 3/4 of a length in the G2 Prix Hocquart over thiscourse May 8, but he may not have as much improve-ment as Castle Gandolfo, who bids to add anotherGroup 1 success to trainer Aidan O’Brien’s tally. Thelatter may have found the French Classic coming toosoon after his unplaced effort in the GI Kentucky Derbyat Churchill Downs May 4, and will find this 10-furlongtrip more suitable. Trainer Andre Fabre practically ownsthis race, having sent out eight winners since 1989,and he saddles the favourite Shaanmer (Ire) (Darshaan{GB}) this time. Unbeaten at two, he was prominent inthe ante-post lists for the Epsom Derby over the winter, but did not come to hand in time for that event. Hewas an encouraging fifth, before being promoted tofourth, in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French2000 Guineas) over an inadequate mile at LongchampMay 12 before dead-heating for second behind Rouvres(Fr) in the G1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly June 2.

In what will be remembered as the last race of jockeyChris McCarron’s storied career, sophomore star CameHome will try to give the only man who’s ridden him ina race a proper departure in front of the home crowd atHollywood. The multiple Grade 1-winning speedstercame into the GI Kentucky Derby off a sparkling perfor-mance in the GI Santa Anita Derby, but the dark bayfound the 1 1/4 miles too much and could manage onlysixth. He’s been off since, but trainer Paco Gonzalez iscautiously optimistic about is return. “He’s ready,” thetrainer said Friday. “He just breezed a half mile in :472/5 Tuesday with Chris. But this race will not be easy...especially when he is giving so much weight to someother good horses.” Gonzalez also expressed his feel-ings on losing his hall-of-fame regular rider, who’ll behonored with a ceremony between races at Hollywood.“It feels sad to know this is his last race,” says Gonza-lez. “He rides everything for us and helped me a lot. Itwill be very hard to find a rider to replace him. It wouldbe nice if everything goes right on Sunday.” CameHome’s main opposition will most likely come from theblossoming Tracemark, who scored by a neck in theCalifornia Derby in April before finishing second toWiseman’s Ferry in the Lone Star Derby May 11.

Shaws Creek, four-for-seven lifetime, hopes to build on a two-race skeinthat was highlighted by a sharp 3/4-length score in thePlate Trial S. June 1. Anglian Prince, the other TejanoRun colt, took the GIII Marine S. at Woodbine May 4 by1 3/4 lengths, then took on Shaws Creek in the PlateTrial S. in his last effort and managed third, beaten justa length by the winner. The horse that finished secondin that one, Classic Mike, also hopes to make his pres-ence felt in today’s contest. He’s two-for-five and hasyet to notch a stakes win, but his game performance inthe Plate Trial S. marks him a contender.

I N E W Y O R K IMCCARRON TAKES JOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP Just two days before his final professional rideaboard Came Home (Gone West) in today’s GIII Af-

firmed H. at Hollywood Park, jockey Chris McCarron cameflying down the Lone Star Parkstretch Friday night to win notonly the race, but also the sixthannual NTRA All-Star JockeyChampionship. “There’s noway you can even dream it’sgoing to work out this good--that would be awfully greedy,”the 47-year-old rider said.McCarron was aboard YotoSpeakes (Zuppardo’s Love) inthe $55,000 allowance test; itlooked like the 7-1 shot hadlittle chance as he came intothe final furlong with five stillin front of him, but the eight-year-old gelding poured it on

late to win by 1 1/4 lengths. “When there were onlytwo or three horses to get by, I realized I had achance,” McCarron said. “The adrenaline was unbe-lievable.” McCarron had also taken the first event inthe four-race Championship, guiding favored PrizedAmberpro (Aspro) to a neck victory. Overall, heearned 24 points and the first-place bonus of$22,000. Edgar Prado was second with 18 pointsand Mike Smith was third with 12 points. The 12riders in the event were guaranteed a minimum bonusof $14,000. The sentimental choice of the crowd,McCarron was the slight 7-2 favorite in the All-StarWager. The Hall of Famer, who retires as the leadingmoney-winning jockey of all time, admitted he hadmixed feelings about his Championship success. “Ithink this will make it more difficult for me onSunday,” McCarron said. “But I’ve made up my mindand I’m satisfied with my decision.”

Macho Uno Preps For Suburban: Stronach Stables’ Macho Uno (Holy Bull), winner inhis most recent start of the GII Massachusetts H. June1, breezed five furlongs yesterday morning over theBelmont Park main track in 1:00 1/5 as he prepares forhis next start in the GII Suburban H. July 6. JockeyAaron Gryder was aboard for the move. “The workwent perfect,” trainer Joe Orseno commented. “I told[Gryder] to start out slow and they went their firsteighth in :12 4/5. They gradually picked it up fromthere.” The Suburban projects to be a very tough race, with GI Stephen Foster H. winner Street Cry (Ire) (Ma-chiavellian) and Lido Palace (Chi) (Rich Man’s Gold)pointing for the 10-furlong event.

Summer Colony To Molly Pitcher: Edward P. Evans’ homebred Summer Colony (Sum-mer Squall), an impressive winner of the GII PimlicoBreeders’ Cup Distaff in Maryland May 17, worked five-eighths of a mile in 1:02 2/5 at Belmont yesterdaymorning. She will make her next start in the GII MollyPitcher Breeders’ Cup H. at Monmouth Park next Satur-day, where she is expected to meet Spain (ThunderGulch). “We’ve given her some added time betweenraces because she didn’t get a break over the winter,”trainer Mark Hennig commented. “Most of what wewant to accomplish with her is in the middle or end ofthe year. I want to have her fresh for those races.”

EDDERY SURPASSES PIGGOTT RECORD JockeyPat Eddery surpassed the career total of Lester Piggottat Goodwood on Friday evening. Taking the MortarmillOrganic Dairy Fillies' H. on the Alan Jarvis-trained LadyPahia (Ire), he reached the 4,494 mark for domesticwins and now sits behind only Sir Gordon Richards with4,870 victories. "We're thrilled,” said Goodwood Gen-eral Manager and Clerk of the Course Rob Fabricius.“It's obviously marvellous to see him achieve that land-mark at Goodwood, particularly riding for Alan Jarvis, who I think he has ridden for many years. We feel weare very close to Pat and he has done us proud."

MURTAGH HANGS ON FOR TROPHY Jockey Johnny Murtagh was not present at RoyalAscot yesterday, but he had done enough in the threedays riding there to retain the London Clubs Trophy forleading rider at the meeting. Having won the G2 QueenAnne S. on No Excuse Needed (GB) (Machiavellian{USA}) on Tuesday, he picked up a four-day whip banfor his winning ride on Royal Rebel (GB) (Robellino{USA}) in Thursday’s G1 Ascot Gold Cup. That decisioncreated much furore as Murtagh will miss Sunday’s G1Irish Derby at The Curragh, but he recovered quickly bytaking the G2 King Edward VII S. with Balakheri (Ire)(Theatrical {Ire}) and Windsor Castle S. with Revenue(GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) on Friday. Despite fin-ishing level with Richard Hughes on four winners forthe meeting, he had the edge at the end of yesterday’sracing with one more fourth-placing than his rival.

ASCOT RIDING HIGH INTO FINAL DAY Ascot yesterday recorded a final day attendance of57,700, taking the week’s attendance beyond the300,000 barrier. Chief executive Douglas Erskine-Crumsaid yesterday: “The additional day of the meeting tocelebrate the Golden Jubilee has produced our big-gest-ever Saturday crowd at Ascot by far. We brokethe regular four-day Royal Ascot record for attendanceson the first four days, including record crowds for theTuesday and Friday.” The Tote's overall on-course cashturnover for the week was £8,298,032, compared to£7,640,012 last year.

Tashawak had not raced since beating Misterah (GB)by a neck in a Salisbury conditions event Sept. 6. Thatform was made to look very smart by the runner-up’ssubsequent performances in winning the G3 Nell GwynS. at Newmarket and finishing fourth in Friday’s G1Coronation S. at this track. Looking for her first Listedsuccess, she stumbled badly exiting the stalls, but washelped by the skill of jockey Richard Hills, and the lackof early pace set up front by fellow top-weight PurpleHaze (Ire) (Spectrum {Ire}). Those easy early fractionssuited the fast Tashawak, whose jockey had no choice, but to sit in last position and wait for the gaps to ap-pear. As the pressure was applied inside the final quar-ter of a mile, the fillies ahead of her veered right, leav-ing a gaping hole on the fence. Tashawak did not re-quire a second invitation and quickened emphatically tohit the front with a furlong remaining, before stretchingclear under a hand ride.

Quickening from lastplace to join battle with Pearl Dance and Luvah Girlinside the final 300 yards, she responded to herjockey’s urgings to put her head down first on the line.“To be quite honest, I didn’t think she was quite QueenMary material, but when the two fillies that were infront of her at Sandown ran so well in it, I wonderedwhether I should have perhaps run her,” said trainerDavid Elsworth, who was recording his 12th RoyalAscot success. “But the six probably suited her betterhere and Richard [Quinn] felt she was still a bit of ababy and she got a bit unbalanced once or twice. Cover Up was delivered late by jockey Kieren Fallonto pass the game Archduke Ferdinand in the shade ofthe post in a thrilling finish to this marathon. Havingwon last year’s Ascot S. over this course, Cover Upwent on the trail of the big staying handicaps where hemanaged to finish fourth behind Mediterranean (GB)and Foreign Affairs (GB) in the Ebor H. at York in Au-gust and on that form, he was established as favouritethis time around. Held up in sixth early as Yorkshire(Ire) (Generous {Ire}) and First Ballot (Ire) (Perugino{USA}) played cat-and-mouse in front, he was alwaystravelling best of all and had closed on to the heels ofthe leaders on the turn into the straight. Looking for agap between First Ballot and San Sebastian (GB)(Niniski {USA}) at the top of the straight, he was forcedto move to the inner, had to quicken to catch ArchdukeFerdinand, who had gone clear, but responded late towear down that rival in the final strides. Sir MichaelStoute said of Cover Up: “He’s in the NorthumberlandPlate [at Newcastle June 29] and I wouldn’t rule thatout. Two miles is a minimum trip for him.”
