Headings As Transitions How to Use Headings as Transitions in
your Papers
Slide 3
Headings Just as this PowerPoint presentation uses headings at
the top of each slide, you can use headings in your body of your
paper to organize the writing and keep your reader on track. A
heading acts as a title for a paragraph or section of paragraphs
within your paper.
Slide 4
Where Do They Come From? Headings should come from your thesis
statement. If you thesis was: Aruba is the best place to vacation
because of the weather, the beaches, and the great package deals,
what do you think your headings should be? Weather Beaches Package
Deals
Slide 5
Outline Headings provide an outline for you as you write and to
your reader as they dig deeper in your paper. They help to keep
both you and the reader on track and expecting the next topic. Be
sure you still have unity though; whatever comes under a heading
needs to be on the same topic.

APA Style & MLA Style Both documentation styles offer rules
for headings. In a simple essay or document for workplace
communication, I am not expected you to follow these rules. For a
upper level class (300 or Higher) with APA or MLA Style
requirements, these heading rules should be followed.
