You have had your last chapel, your last quad assembly, your last lunchtime. The rhythm of your life will no longer be dictated by the rhythm of school, with terms, and bells, and uniform, and bells, and timetable and bells. Freedom is upon you – well, nearly upon you. Just Google graduation speeches and you can disappear down a rabbit hole – although best to wait until after the exams. The reality is that most of these speeches hit up themes that we have been ingesting from our culture. Dr Seuss probably summarised it best in his book ‘Oh, the places you’ll go!’ It starts: Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go. I am drawing here from a recent book by David Brooks, The Second Mountain. He notes that at these points of graduation, our messages are really and profoundly unhelpful. “Freedom! You are free. The purpose of life is to be free. Freedom leads to happiness.” The trouble is, our problem at this point of history is not lack of freedom. We have more freedom than virtually any generation in human history. So we give you the message of possibility. “Your future is limitless. You can do anything you set your mind to. Dream big. Take risks. Anything is possible.” Again, when you haven’t got a clear sense of direction, it doesn’t help to be told that the sky is the limit – that just increases the pressure. If you don’t make it big, it is clearly your own fault. We then tell you all about authenticity. “Just be yourself. Be true to you. You are amazing – so be that guy.” Again, this doesn’t really help because that internal source of authority is still taking shape. What does it mean to be true to me? 2019 Valedictory Address

Graduations, whether from school or university, are among the few clear rites of passage that endure in oursociety. There is a clear point of transition that takes place – even if it is a little blurred by exam scheduling. Thereality is that this is your last week of classes as Trinity students. You have had your last chapel, your last quadassembly, your last lunchtime. The rhythm of your life will no longer be dictated by the rhythm of school, withterms, and bells, and uniform, and bells, and timetable and bells. Freedom is upon you – well, nearly upon you.

A common tradition at graduation events is a speech, dispensing wisdom. There are lots of these online – JKRowling, Steve Jobs, Will Ferrell. Just Google graduation speeches and you can disappear down a rabbit hole –although best to wait until after the exams.

The reality is that most of these speeches hit up themes that we have been ingesting from our culture. Dr Seussprobably summarised it best in his book ‘Oh, the places you’ll go!’ It starts:

Congratulations!Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourselfany direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

I am drawing here from a recent book by David Brooks, The Second Mountain. He notes that at these points ofgraduation, our messages are really and profoundly unhelpful. “Freedom! You are free. The purpose of life is tobe free. Freedom leads to happiness.” The trouble is, our problem at this point of history is not lack of freedom. We have more freedom than virtually any generation in human history.

So we give you the message of possibility. “Your future is limitless. You can do anything you set your mind to.Dream big. Take risks. If you don’t make it big, it is clearlyyour own fault.

We then tell you all about authenticity. “Just be yourself. Be true to you. You are amazing – so be that guy.”Again, this doesn’t really help because that internal source of authority is still taking shape. What does it mean tobe true to me?

And we tell you about autonomy. “It’s up to you to find your way, to determine right and wrong, to make yourchoices and live with the consequences.” With this final burden in place, we cut you adrift, pushing you out intothe sea, drifting with the wind and waves. Free.

Today, in my final words to our graduating class, I want to suggest that there is a better way to be. Instead ofchasing freedom, go for commitment.

Brooks argues that commitment to a spouse, to a community, to a vocation, and to a philosophy or worldview –this is where the good life is to be found.

A spouse. Not in the cascade of thousands of momentary soulless images that flash across the screen inpornography, but in the deep commitment to one other, in good times and in bad, for richer for poorer, insickness and in health, as long as you both shall live.

A community. Not in the rootless and shallow connections and networks built on clicks and likes and a subtleundercurrent of envy, but in the bonds that form over time through shared experiences both trivial andmomentous, belonging – deeply belonging – in a way that only forms over time and presence.

A vocation. Dedicating oneself not to a mercenary pursuit of wealth, nor immersing oneself in a stupor of trivialbanality, but understanding one’s work – paid or unpaid – as a calling. Something with meaning and purpose, something that contributes to the world and makes a difference to the people whom God has made. We need toknow that what we do matters.

And, finally, a philosophy or worldview. The big questions of life need to be answered, although we can muffletheir voices and distract ourselves with busyness, until such point that a crisis confronts us and strips us back toraw reality. What is life all about? Why am I here? Who am I? What happens next?

In each of these areas, commitment provides us with a better way to be. Instead of aiming for happiness, aim formeaning. Instead of independence, interdependence. Instead of prizing autonomy, prioritise relationships.Instead of buying and selling, we have giving and receiving. Instead of choices and options, think in terms ofpromises and commitments.

At the end of your school days, it is entirely understandable that the grass is greener out there. The allure offreedom and individualism is strong, and it is right for you to go out and explore. There is nothing wrong withfreedom and possibilities and authenticity and autonomy. But the vision that claims ‘This is the good life’, over-promises, and under-delivers.

It is important to recognise that you have tasted the committed life. During your time at the School you havebelonged to something bigger than yourselves, and you have carried the obligations and expectations that comewith that belonging. You have built friendships through shared experiences – both large and small. You aresurrounded by people whose lives are marked by commitment, not freedom. Your school experience, has beenmade possible by the commitment of those around you.

Your family, whose commitment to you is one of the defining elements of their lives. Their commitment to youhas been seen from your conception until now. They have put aside their own interests and opportunities, theyhave foregone other ways of using their hard-earned money, they have supported and encouraged andwitnessed and wept. Perhaps today, more than any other, their identity has been found and formed through thatcommitment. It is how they think of themselves: I am Ethan’s mum. I am Nick’s dad. Their commitment to you isone of the most precious and prized elements that defines them, and that they could not imagine themselveswithout. They are living examples of the fact that commitment is better than freedom. Men of Trinity, I wonderwhether you will join me in publicly acknowledging and thanking your parents for their commitment.

Your teachers, too, are defined by their commitment. Teaching at Trinity is a vocation – a calling. It is a callingthat has led them to go above and beyond in your education. Their commitment to seeing you grow and flourishand thrive in mind, body and spirit stems from their conviction that education matters, and that you matter. Menof Trinity, I wonder whether you will join with me in publicly thanking and acknowledging the staff at Trinity, whose commitment to your education has made your journey what it is, to this point and in the years to come.

I have suggested to you that commitment is better than freedom. The challenge for you is to work out how, who,and what, to be committed to. My hope and prayer is that, as you move on from Trinity, and as you find thosepeople, and places and tasks to which you will commit, you will remember also the Lord Jesus. His words are afirm foundation on which we can build the good life. He provides us with a mission and purpose. His death andresurrection provide us with a hope that endures and that will not disappoint. The apostle Paul, nearing the endof his days and reflecting on the path that he had taken, wrote “I am not ashamed, because I know whom I havebelieved and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him.” The Lord Jesus can betrusted. Commit yourselves to him.

Detur Gloria Soli Deo.

It was a wonderful evening of Jazz on Monday. This concert has become one of the signal events on the Trinitycalendar, coming as it does so close to the end of the academic year, and this year was no exception. The BigBand had the opportunity to collaborate with The Vampires, and it was terrific to see the Jazz Combo performingwith such confidence. I remain incredibly impressed at the commitment of our Year 12s who, like the CASChampionships last week, continue to throw themselves into the life of the School right up until the very lastmoment. I have often called to mind the words of Walt Whitman when he says he “wanted to live deeply andsuck all the marrow of life … to cut a broad swath”. Watching the Class of 2019 go about their final days ofschool, I think many of them can say they cut a very broad swath through Trinity Grammar School.

Earlier this week the Head Master announced another Australian representative selection to your sons and itmade me reflect on the extraordinary achievements of the boys of this School that we sometimes take forgranted. Many schools would be pleased to have one Australian representative. Congratulations to the followingboys and young men who have been selected to represent at the highest level in the last six months.

Sam Fricker (11Fo) – Diving

Theo Kidd (10WJ) – Track & Field

Kai Young (11We) – Australian Under 18 Water Polo, Australian Schools’ Water Polo

Tristan Glanznig (11Ta) – Australian Under 17 Water Polo

Timothy Hoskin (10Sc) – Dragon Boating

Daniel Tran (9Ta) – Dragon Boating

Finally, may I remind the outgoing Class of 2019 that there is no silver bullet when it comes to success, whetherat school or in life. Whatever mark each young man receives on his Higher School Certificate or his InternationalBaccalaureate Diploma, will be the mark he has earned. It will not come down to luck, or intellect, or thedifficulty of the examination questions. Your son’s results will reflect the work he has done in his time at theSchool, and the work he is prepared to do over the coming weeks. As in education, so it is in life. If you wish tobe successful, you must do the work. I encourage every student to make the best use of the hundreds of hours ofstudy time that remain before the commencement and over the course of the examinations. The jury is not out.The case studies from previous generations of Trinity students is unequivocal; students who make good use ofthe coming weeks have an opportunity to dramatically improve their estimated marks and grades.

ACADEMIC

News from the Arthur Holt LibrarySo, we come to the end of another term… and what a term it has been.

Most of you will have passed through the library at some point – whether it was to watch our guest Manga artistat work, explore a planetarium or launch a rocket in Science Week; or to curl up with a book or short story forAustralian Reading Hour.

Year 7 came to research how Greek myths have influenced a whole host of comic books and graphic novels, while Year 9 came to complete the All My Own Work module that will help prepare them for the rigours of thesenior years.

But most of you just came to enjoy library life – to play a game with friends, to finish off an assignment, to find aquiet corner to revise, or to gain inspiration from the thousands of books on offer.

What does that look like in numbers? Well, 675 books were borrowed. That’s up 13.5 percent from the sametime last year. 141 new books were added to the collection, ranging from a history of the mosquito, to ‘TheTestaments’, Margaret Atwood’s long-awaited sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’.

In a term when the senior years have been pre-occupied by exams, Year 7 topped the table for most booksborrowed with a whopping 322. Graphic novels remain a favourite.

We also welcomed two new members of staff to the library: Library Services Specialist Kasey Drayton andTeaching and Learning Librarian Andrea O’Driscoll. Kasey is a former journalist who’s currently reading ‘TheSurprising Power of a Good Dumpling’ and Andrea, who’s originally from England, is enjoying ‘Warcross’ by MarieLu.

We hope to see you all back here next term. For those of you who need a place to study in the holidays, thelibrary will be open to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm. We do hope you stop by and sayhello!

Enjoy the break!

Track and Field | CAS 90th Championships90th CAS Track And Field Championships – The Andrew Reid Challenge Cup

After five Invitational competitions, the Trinity Track and Field team was ready to compete last Thursday in whatwould be our highest ever points score at the CAS. We had our star athletes, but also a number of injuriessidelining key athletes. However, what unfolded during the twilight competition was very evident: we competedas a team with one goal and that was to be the best TEAM we could be! Every single performance counted, fromour youngest team member in Year 7 to our oldest in Year 12. Our reserves played an integral part in beingready to compete when needed. In total, we achieved over 87 personal best performances at the Championshipsfrom a possible 132. There were also 61 first places at the Championships out of 104 events. We also had a veryimpressive 19 second places and 11 third placings throughout the Championships. A total of 91 top three resultsout of a total of 104 events. That is an amazing achievement.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the tireless efforts of our coaching staff who have provided ourathletes with motivation, technical guidance and passion for the sport of Track and Field. Also, a big thank you toall the parents who provided their valuable time to assist throughout the season — it certainly was a combinedeffort from all concerned and the result was a credit to all the boys for the hard work over the year. Go theGREEN TEAM!

Football NewsSeason Review

In the 45th season of Trinity Football, the Football programme continued to grow and improve in participation, retention, engagement and competitiveness. Trinity Football participation grew to 750 players (Year 4-12) in2019, 502 of whom were in Year 7; 12. 91% of Year 8-12 Football players returned in 2019 and were joined by129 Year 7 students. Engagement across the Year 7-12 programme grew by 2.8%, with pleasing improvementsin goal-setting and feeling confident about performing well. Regarding Year 7-12 competitiveness, the win/draw% grew by 15.8%, with the biggest improvement between rounds coming from the Opens and Year 8. Analysis ofthe 1st/2nd/A/B CAS results saw Trinity move from 3rd to 2nd in CAS and to within one point of 1st place. Therewere six unofficial premierships (2nd XI, 5th XI, 10A, 9A, 7A and 7F teams) and the Bill Turner Cup team madethe Sydney Central Final.

All of the above would not be possible without (a) the efforts of students to improve their ball mastery andunderstanding of the principles of Football; (b) parents having supportive communication throughout the seasonwith their son and assisting with training/game logistics; (c) Coaches looking to improve their Coaching skills andteaching the fundamentals of Football; and (d) the support of the School leadership for the ‘World Game’.

International Honours

Congratulations to Thomas Stobierski (10WJ) who has been representing the U15 Australian team this lastweek in Vietnam. This was a qualifying tournament for the 2020 U16 Asian Football Confederation (AFC)Championships. Thomas was involved in games against Mongolia, Macau and Timor-Leste. On Sunday night,Australia came from 0-1 against Vietnam to win 2-1 and to qualify for the AFC Championships. This is critical, asit is from this tournament that nations can then qualify for the 2021 U17 World Cup.

CO-CURRICULAR

Chess | Old Trinitarian Union (OTU) vs TrinityOn Friday the 20th of September, the Trinity Chess Club hosted its traditional annual Old Trinitarian Union (OTU)vs Trinity chess event. The OTU team, consisting of Marco Pascale (Chess Captain of 2014), Edward Lin (Class of2014), Calvin Fong (Class of 2016), Remo Pascale (Class of 2016) and Nick Van Gelder (Chess Captain of 2016),took on the current best Trinity Chess players. The evening hosted several gripping matches and it was thrillingto see the current members take on the OTU team, who were in their shoes just a few years ago. The event washeld as a simultaneous exhibition in which the OTU team would play four Trinity members at once. Although thisput them at a disadvantage, the OTU were still able to secure some wins, reminding the chess team that despitenot having played competitive chess in a while they could still compete and beat us. Not only did the OTUshowcase their masterful strategy and clever tactics but they also reflected on their personal experiences oftheir time playing chess for the school. Overall, the evening was a great success with exciting chess matches andlaughter all round, as well as creating much anticipation for the future of the Trinity Chess Team.
