The love story of Tara Byrne and Jordan Findlay has traveled from the northern shore of Scotland to the highlands of east Tennessee—and then to the outer banks of North Carolina for a family-focused wedding. Jordan, who hails from Fraserburgh, Scotland, met Tara at East Tennessee State University when he was on the golf team and she was on the tennis team. “We were friends for a while and then started dating during my sophomore year,” Tara says, “but it took seven years for him to finally ask me to marry him! He proposed at the first place we met, at ETSU in front of the Mini-Dome.” Tara, daughter of Charles and Betsy Byrne,
grew up in Johnson City. Her family spent many vacations at Bald Head Island, just off the coast of North Carolina. “Jordan started going there with my family over holidays, after we started dat-ing…it became a home spot for him, too,” Tara says. The resort, complete with a golf course, was the ideal choice for their two families to meet for a destination wedding on September 27, 2014. From Scotland, 30 of Jordan’s family and friends came over to celebrate, in-cluding Jordan’s parents, Ian and Geor-gann Findlay, and grandparents, George and Kathleen Millard. “Everyone got there mid-week,” Tara continues. “Family and close friends
planned events everyday while we were at Bald Head Island, which in-cluded the Byrne Boy Beach Bash, a Bridal Brunch, a Southern BBQ, the Byrne-Findlay Golf Tournament, and a Ryder Cup Party. It was great to have everyone together leading up to our wedding day. We have wonderful people in our lives. “Jordan and all of the grooms-men wore kilts, including my three brothers,” Tara adds. “My brothers probably won’t admit to it, but they were excited about it. Even my two baby nephews had kilts specially made for them by Marsha Mucha.” Tara and Jordan blended their Southern and Scottish traditions during the wedding and reception. The women wore “fascinators,” a popular British hat piece with feathery accents. Bridesmaids wore pink gathered-chiffon dresses and carried floral bouquets with plaid

ribbons; the groomsmen’s boutonnieres featured the Scottish thistle. Tara wore a classic white lace dress and long, cathe-dral veil. The wedding ceremony at the Bald Head Island Chapel, next to the “Old Baldy” Lighthouse, was set among live oaks and Spanish moss. A bagpiper greeted the guests and accompanied the ceremony. Monsignor Michael Clay, a close family friend to the Byrnes, officiated. “Our reception was held at the Bald Head Island Club. The night started with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner and dancing by the Pizazz Band. They are a local North Carolina band that plays any-thing from shag, contemporary, to coun-try. It was just what we wanted for our wedding reception!” The couple departed the reception, ap-propriately enough, in a golf cart. Then, instead of leaving the island, they stayed for a “mini-moon” honeymoon. “We chose to hang out with all the extended family and friends who were there for the week,” she says. “It is a rare opportunity to have all this family and friends togeth-er. We feel so blessed. We wouldn’t have spent our honeymoon any other way.” Tara, who has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business from ETSU, is a pri-
vate banker at First Tennessee. And Jor-dan, who has a degree in sports manage-ment, is now a professional golfer getting
ready to play on the PGA’s EuroPro tour in the British Isles for the season starting in March.
“We love Scotland,” Tara says, “and it will be fun to spend more time there in the future.”

Fairytale wedding held on Lookout Mountain
Micah Haus-ler and Laura Bohon met on Lookout Mountain where they each lived while work-ing in nearby Chattanooga. They met at a church din-ner and the couple had the ‘fairytale, love at first sight story.’ After a long friendship that even en-dured Lau-
ra’s year in Florence, Italy studying in a professional fine art program, the couple was engaged after her return and spent a year planning their special wedding atop Lookout Mountain. Lookout Mountain was an inspiration for the wedding as Laura’s parents, Todd and Emily Bohon, were married at the same lo-cation, The Church of the Good Shepherd. Laura’s grandmother, Jeanne Rudisill, has attended the same church for more than 50 years in the small community. The reception was hosted by the Bo-hon’s at the historical Grandview Home just minutes from the church. The couple decided on a lively instrumental string quartet to add to the old world charm of the reception. It was an intimate event for friends and family attending from far and wide to be able to visit, feast and celebrate with the couple. Tall cocktail tables and large draping flo-ral arrangements with glowing bistro lights decorated the venue. Some highlights of the evening were hilarious and sentimental toasts from Micah’s best man and Laura’s twin sister, Sarah Flynn, Matron of Honor. The farthest guest came from Florence, Ita-ly to celebrate with the couple.

Thomas and Julie O’Connor were mar-ried on a private beach at The Wharf on Grand Cayman, July 12, 2014. Their im-mediate family, including parents, Mike and Lida Barton, and Thomas’ parents, Chris and Jane O’Connor, and sister, Alli-son O’Connor, attended the wedding and dinner. The wedding party dined in a pri-
vate gazebo on the water at the restaurant after the wedding. Reverend Donovan Myers presided over the ceremony. The vows and message were traditional, however the ceremony was in-timate and personal, credited to the stun-ning location and close family members. The ceremony was held just before sunset. Wedding favors included unique, engraved bottle openers and ornaments. The new couple honeymooned on the island for the week following the wedding. After returning home the couple planned a party in Johnson City at The Carnegie to celebrate the occasion with extended family and friends. Over 160 people attended the event in the main ballroom. Tables were set with a variety of candelabras, candlesticks, lanterns and votives. The idea was for guests to feel as if they were at a cozy (but romantic and elegant) dinner party. For this reason, guests also entered the party through the parlor instead of the main doors typically used. Jazz music was provided by the Bill Per-kins Jazz Ensemble playing throughout the evening. Other entertainment included a short film, written by the bride and pro-duced by her cousin, Mikel Barton that included pictures from their wedding not previously shared with anyone. Party favors were small decorative bags containing a shiny new penny and a lottery ticket (a couple guests even won!) tied up with string and a tag reading “for richer, for poorer”. Name tags were charade masks for the ladies and mustache props for the men.

When Meredith Eldridge planned her wedding with groom Joseph Redman, her parents already owned the perfect spot—Grace Meadows Farm, home of Washing-ton County Mayor Dan Eldridge and his wife Tammy. “Joseph and I actually met on the farm in 2009, when he came to help with one of my dad’s cattle sales,” Meredith recalls. A year later, the couple ended up getting to-gether, dating, and planning their marriage on June 21, 2014. The Eldridge farm had already been the site of other weddings, but Meredith want-ed her wedding to be a little different. “Dad built us a ‘wedding barn,’ which was a portable arbor placed up above the
pond,” Meredith says. “He and Mom also expanded the party barn for the reception. I had drawn out pictures, too, for my dad to hang strings of lights down from the eave of the barn roof over the lawn area. Those lights wound up illuminating the entire area and making it a magical eve-ning setting.” As guests were seated by the pond, the groomsmen approached on individual an-tique Farmall tractors. The bridesmaids came in on a wagon drawn by another vin-tage 1940s John Deere tractor, all taking their places in preparation for Meredith’s arrival in her own tractor-drawn wagon with her father, Dan. “Just as we were getting ready to start up,
I could see the rain coming in sheets,” Mer-edith recalls. “I said, ‘Just pray, Dad,’ and grabbed his hand. We leapt off the trailer and stuffed ourselves into the tractor cab. Dad kept saying, ‘It’s going to be okay,’ thinking I was going to cry, but after a mo-ment, I just burst out laughing.” Most of the guests hurried to get umbrel-las and returned to the gathering. Meredith and her dad finally entered after the deluge had passed. “When I walked down the aisle, all I saw was Joseph,” she says, “but then I turned and looked at my bridesmaids, standing there drenched and smiling as if nothing was wrong. I just started laughing all over again.” “Even though we all got wet, it didn’t matter…we had fun anyway. Earlier, the weather was just gorgeous, but the rain made it all unique and memorable!” Joseph is the son of Barry and Suzi Red-man of Boones Creek. Their family pastor, David Clark from Boone’s Creek Christian Church, officiated while special prayers
were given by the Eldridges’ friend, Ira Cunningham, a retired pastor from Boone Trail Baptist Church and Joe Sutherland, the retired pastor who married Joseph’s parents 29 years earlier. Another unique touch at the couple’s wedding involved a non-traditional unity ceremony. Instead of a candle or sand, Meredith and Joseph joined a unity cross. “His dad had taken old barn wood from a family barn and created a rugged cross-shaped frame. Inside, we placed another cross that was more intricate and deli-cate, made out of an old floor board from a house my great-grandfather built. There were three pegs on the outside to represent the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and to hold it all together. “For us, that was symbolic of how we’ve been raised, in Christian homes, following Christ. It’s the perfect representation of how we wanted to start out marriage and raise our family together. We have it on our mantel at home so we can always see it and be reminded every day of how we need to

live our lives together, in Christ’s love.” At the reception, guests enjoyed some of Meredith’s and Joseph’s favorite snacks—bleu cheese dip and crackers from Ridge-wood Barbecue—and Boston Butt smoked by Joseph’s Uncle Mike Freeman. Meredith had a surprise, too, for her dad during their dance together. “I had record-ed a message that the deejay played before the song, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads,’ by John Denver. “In my message, I thanked my dad for singing this song to me every night before I went to bed…it became the song of my life, reminding me that no matter how far I go in life, I can always come home.” Meredith and Joseph also had a special song—“Farmer’s Daughter,” by Rodney At-kins, whose lyrics mirrored their love story. The couple exited to sparklers and fire-works set off by one of their friends, Brandon Massengill. After spending a
honeymoon in Jamaica at the Sandals Whitehouse Resort, the newlyweds are liv-ing in and restoring an 1800s farmhouse across the road from Grace Meadows. Jo-seph is a landscape and horticulture gradu-ate of Tennessee Technological University who owns a landscaping business called Greenacres Lawncare. Meredith, a child and youth development major from Milli-gan College, works as a third grade teacher at Jonesborough Elementary School. “Our wedding day was special because we had an army of friends and family come together to make it happen,” Meredith says. “There was so much to get ready, and our parents’ friends did whatever it took to make it nice—setting up centerpieces, making food, painting fences, mowing the lawn—I was blown away. The outpour-ing of love and support and help was just amazing, a testimony to us and our families that people cared that much for us.”

With more than 500 miles spanning the distance between family and friends, August Glenn and Parker Duncan chose a happy medium for their destination wedding—the rustic Owen Farm, nestled on the Cumber-land River just northwest of Nashville. August and Parker met while attending a party at the University of Memphis and found they had a common link—birthdays one day apart. “It turned out that I was 364 days older than her,” Parker says. “I was born on April 23, and she was born on April 22.” The couple dated almost three years before Parker proposed. “Our first date was at the Memphis Botanical Gardens, and we had taken a picture there on a bench at the back
of the park,” he says. “For my proposal, I took her back to the park and brought along a copy of the picture in a sealed envelope. I told her if she could guess where we had taken that photograph, she could open the envelope to see it…she really had no clue what was coming.” When they got to the bench, Parker invited August to open the envelope to see if she had guessed right. On the back of the photo were the words, “Will you marry me?” Park-er then got down on one knee and pulled her engagement ring out of a box he had hidden in one of his cowboy boots. Todd Bell, a dentistry student friend and photographer, joined the happy couple and took more pic-tures at the memorable bench.
That evening, Parker also surprised August with a family dinner at a local restaurant. Her parents, Greg and Cyndi Glenn, had driven in from Hendersonville. His parents, Richard and Lee Anne Duncan, had flown in from Johnson City, while his sister, Taylor Duncan, had flown to Memphis from Okla-homa for the occasion. With family and friends at both edges of Tennessee as well as in Mississippi, August and Parker needed a venue that would work well for all of them. “We wanted to be outside because that’s where we love to spend most of our time to-gether,” August says. “We finally found this place with a beautiful overlook and loved the family running the farm.” When they chose the location in advance of the wedding, set for June 7, 2014, a pavilion wasn’t there yet. “The owners built it during the year, which was really a plus for us,” she says. “It was a very warm, inviting place.” The farm also featured a nearby cabin where August and her bridesmaids spent the night together before the wedding. The barn was set up as a gathering place the next day for family and friends; Parker and his groomsmen stayed upstairs getting ready
and playing pool. August chose neutral colors for the wed-ding party. She wore a white strapless wed-ding dress with gathered bodice and sweet-heart neckline, while her bridesmaids wore complementary dresses in pale gray. Parker and his groomsmen wore charcoal gray; he chose his dad, Richard, to be his best man.

In the time leading up to the wedding, Au-gust was still finishing her degree in health administration and busy working. “I did lots of ‘calling Mom,’ and she was a huge help, being our eyes and ears there,” August says. “My dad made the letters ‘A & P’ from ply-wood and sheet metal, put lights on them, and hung them over the barn door.” For the wedding “cake,” August chose petit-fours, something she enjoyed for her birthdays growing up, topped with a silver leaf and made by the Sweet ‘N Sassy Bakery of Nashville. When the wedding afternoon arrived, however, threatening weather shifted the ceremony from a field overlooking the river to the nearby illuminated pavilion where a string ensemble was playing classical music. Guests gathered in a makeshift aisle around the happy couple as vows were exchanged. Nick Person, August’s high school pas-tor at her church in Hendersonville, offici-ated. “I thought he did a great job,” August said, “and right after a prayer when he said, ‘Amen,’ it thundered!” Afterward, the wedding party and guests were treated to a buffet dinner and dancing in the pavilion to music Parker had selected. The skies cleared to reveal a brilliant rain-bow and stunning sunset. The couple honeymooned in Antigua at
the Sandals Resort. Parker, who majored in biology while playing varsity soccer for the University of Memphis Tigers, is now a third-year medical student at the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center. August works as executive assistant at Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Germantown. “Our wedding was such a fun day,” August
says. “I loved that everyone was so support-ive and encouraging, and being on the pavil-ion made the gathering more intimate. That sunset was the icing on the cake!”

Travis and Jeri were married in a private ceremony May 24, 2014 on Kiawah Island, SC at The Sanctuary Hotel on The Grand Lawn with their families in attendance. Both newlyweds are from John-son City. Travis’s best man was his brother, John Hathaway, and Jeri’s sister, Nikki Lee, was her matron of honor. The bride and groom’s niec-es, Haley, Lula, Flora and Georgia were flower girls and carried petite spring bouquets. Both families stayed on Kiawah Island during the week of the wed-ding. The staff of The Sanctuary Ho-tel took care of everything and coor-dinated the entire ceremony leaving free time for the couple to enjoy their families. After the ceremony the wedding party enjoyed a private dinner on the island at The Ocean Room. On returning home to Johnson City the couple had a reception for friends and extended family at the Johnson City Country Club.
