STATEDEPUTY’SREPORT

Brothers, it has been my pleasure serving the Iowa Knights of Columbus as State Sec-retary these past two years and serving under the direction of Immediate Past State Deputy Michael Laake. Brothers I am proud to be part of the 1.8 million men we call “The Knights of Columbus.”

Brothers, I take pride also in being con-nected with the Iowa Knights of Columbus and can truly say that I have 31,000 plus friends across this great state of Iowa. I know that any-where there is a Knight I know I can count on him to help a fellow brother in need. I’ve also got to say that as I enjoy an “Experience of a Lifetime” in being a Knight I want to commit to growing our Order in Iowa and offer to all eligible catholic gentlemen the “Experience of a Lifetime” by joining the world’s largest men’s catholic fraternal organization in the world, “The Knights of Columbus”.

As July 1st rolls around beginning our new year I become the next State Deputy of Iowa and with that said I want to thank each and everyone one you for allowing me to take on the duties, challenges, the responsibilities and privileges, that come with this office. I look forward to serving the Iowa Knights of Columbus and I look forward to working closely with each and every one of you in living and growing our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.

Our theme that Cheryl and I have picked for this first year in office is: “We Love, We Serve, We Grow” and Cheryl and I truly believe that this theme truly shows how we both feel about what the Knights have done for us and what the Knights can do for you.

• We do what we do because of our love for our faith and our brothers and sisters in Christ.

• We serve those in need, always remember-ing our greatest principle, that of Charity.

• We grow because we know we need to grow in order to do God’s works faster and often.

Vivat Jesus!

Elections are a time for debate and decisions about the leaders, policies and values that will guide our nation. Our nation faces political chal-lenges that demand urgent moral choices. We are a nation battling several types of wars, with all of its human costs, a country often divided by race, ethnicity and positions on issues that frame our Christian character. Church leader-ship has an obligation to help us shape our consciences and, by doing so, helps us become better informed and faith-filled Christians. In recent months the Catholic Church has spoken some of the loudest expressions of disgust and anger I have publicly heard from its leaders, (at least in my lifetime) in response to several concerns and issues arising from our nation’s leaders. Please join me in thanking our church leaders for their steadfast courage to fight for the preservation of religious liberty and the culture of life, from conception to natural death. Taking and making the time to say thank you to our church leaders is something many of us provide to our local pastors. However, the concerns facing our country are not only a battle that must be fought locally, but a fight that must be challenged nationally too. Please continue to pray for our Iowa bishops and all those who have stepped forward to fight for religious liberty, including those bishops throughout our country who have initiated cases in litigation challenging our nation’s leaders’ decision to require Catholic institu-tions to provide insurance coverage for services that violate our consciences. Let them know of your prayers and desire to be in solidarity with them! We all know the power of prayer! Please join me in prayer as we unite FOR OUR COUNTRY and the preservation of expressing our faith in a country that strives to continue living and breathing the freedom our broth-ers and sisters have sacrificed their lives for across the globe.

Now….changing the subject, many of you may have already learned that I have been reappointed to serve as Iowa’s State Chaplain for two more years. I am more than pleased and honored to serve you! As I said when I accepted these duties three years ago, serving you at this level is my way of giving back what the Knights of Columbus provided to me when I was in seminary formation. Your prayers and generosity meant so much to me and my peace of mind during that critical time in my life. Again, thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

During the next two years I hope to provide

our state’s councils with a better vision for what is expected and desired at our regular council meetings’ Chaplain’s Reflection time. During our recent State Convention I spoke briefly on catechetical formation and our Supreme Council’s request to begin providing opportuni-ties for knowing our faith. I want to thank those who shared stories and experiences with me about their renewed knowledge of our faith. I also heard of a few situations where little to nothing has been initiated yet by local council leaders. Gentlemen, I urge each of you to take ownership in your council and know your faith. Get to know your chaplain. If he cannot attend your council meeting, make arrangements for his delegate or an alternative to his presence. Yes, it is true that some extra time may be needed to ensure all these arrangements are in place. Trust me. It is worth it! As more and more of us discover how much there truly is to know about our faith, the drive to grow in it also continues to grow. And, as we continue to discern the roles and gifts of our priests’ verses those of a layperson, it is once again paramount to be formed and informed in our faith. Again, thank you for being a Knight! And, thank you for stepping up to the plate to know our faith!

The Spencer Knights of Columbus Lady of the Lakes Council 3965 from Sacred Heart Parish, recently gave checks in the amount of $10,250 to Sacred Heart School!

The school will use this money to purchase SMART Boards so that there is one in every classroom. The Knights’ donation came from the Bingo Stand they operate at the Clay County Fair, the Annual KC Golf Tournament, an Omelet Breakfast, and from other fund raisers that they did throughout the year.

Pictured here is Grand Knight, Al Irmiter, presenting the money to Principal Ron Olberd-ing as several Knights look on.

STATESECRETARY’SREPORT

Dan Werner

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your State Secretary for the next two years. My wife, Carol, and I look forward to helping you in any way we can.

Supreme held an organizational meet-ing for State Secretaries, State Membership Chairmen, and State Program Chairmen on June 23 in Dallas, Texas. Mike Gaspers and I attended to represent the Iowa jurisdiction. The agenda included sessions regarding growing membership, supporting charitable programs, and building a relationship with council chaplains.

The presenters explained the concept of Membership 365 (one member, per council, per month) and stressed that membership growth needs to happen year-round. Featured charitable programs include RSVP, Habitat for Humanity, wheelchairs, Special Olympics, Food for Families, March for Life, ultrasound machines, and Coats for Kids.

Reverend John Grace, the Director of Chap-lain Programs and Development, told us that stewardship is not an option for Knights and for members of the Church, and that developing a better understanding of our Catholic faith is also not an option.

The Iowa jurisdiction was recognized at the meeting both for submitting 100 % of required forms this past year, and for its development of a Catholic radio program.

The presenters also asked the state officers in attendance to make sure that each state coun-cil had an “A Team” of state officers in place to achieve the year’s goals. If you feel you have the interest, talents and desire to serve as a state officer now or in the future, please contact me or any of the other state officers.

I am happy to provide further details to anyone interested. Supreme plans to hold this meeting again next year.

This year’s “To Be a Patriot Award” winner is the James G. Jordan Assembly 3031 of West Des Moines. The assembly was recognized as the winner in the Father Padilla Province. The project was the Iowa Veterans Cemetery Project. The assembly mowed a total of 1,155 acres of grass over a 21 week period. They also mulched and trimmed 250 trees. They also marked pavement curbs around the cemetery for flag placements on special occasions, and trimmed trees around the large cemetery sign overlooking 1-80. Congratulations to the As-sembly 3031 for a job well done.

I would like to congratulate the following assemblies for reaching their membership quota for the fraternal year: Assembly 3088 Le Mars at 142 percent, 272 Storm Lake at 127 percent, 3265 Ankeny at 120 percent and Assembly 3179 Cedar Rapids 100 percent.

By now you have selected your assembly officers for the 2012 - 2013 fraternal year. If you have not already done so, please send me a date for the new officer installation. Either I, or one of my assistants, will be doing the instal-lation of officers. Also you will need to send the Report Of Officers Chosen For The Term (form 186) to Supreme and send a copy to me. Without this report Supreme cannot send you the information to help your assembly.

Experience has shown that when an as-sembly has a radius of less than 25 miles, and around six councils, the membership increases and we see better service of the needs of the Church and the community. In order for the assemblies to meet the needs in the area, it is important to increase the membership. The purpose of starting a new assembly is not to take away from the good works of the existing assembly; it is to better serve the Church land to get more Sir Knights actively involved. The needs in your area can still be served by communicating and working together to complete projects.

Currently the Fourth Degree membership in Iowa is 4,488. We have welcomed 181 new members to the degree so far this year but 126 have passed away. Because our aging population, we will need to double our new membership in order to keep up our current membership status.. The next Exemplifica-tion in the Des Moines area is at St. Theresa Parish on Saturday, October 13th and in the Davenport area is at Holy Family Parish on Saturday, November 10th. The goal is to imple-ment the process of adding assemblies at that same time. In order to start a new assembly

3RD DEGREE EXEC. COMM.REPORT

Blessed and Joyous Summer Greetings! To begin, I want to express my appreciation

in your support and trust to serve as a Third Degree Delegate to the Iowa Knights of Co-lumbus Executive Committee. I look forward to this opportunity. I am just an extension of all of you so if you have any ideas, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me as I am your servant.

I write this column the day after the Iowa Knights of Columbus Golf Tournament. It was a great day at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown. A record number of Brother Knights participated this year from across Iowa, the Good Lord kept the rain to a sprinkle which then turned to sun with perfect temperatures, the scores stayed low, dinner was delicious, and our host, Marshall Council 966, provided great organization and hospitality. This annual event is a great example of our principle of Fraternity. I know there are many similar Fraternity opportunities at the Council and Assembly levels and I encourage you to participate. There is no better way to get to know like-minded Catholics than through a Knights of Columbus event. In addition, I hope you will take advantage of the many Iowa Knights of Columbus events from the bowling, softball, and golf tournaments to the retreat to the camporee.

As you will quickly learn about me, I love quotes. I leave you with one from a fellow Brother Knight which I feel best captures Fraternity:

“Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

~ Vince Lombardi ~Vivat Jesus!

the requirement is to have 30 members, six of which must be new to the Fourth Degree. Based on the number of councils and current Knights of Columbus membership this should not be a problem. I know sometimes change can be difficult but we must look in the future and how it will benefit the Church, assembly membership, and community. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I am also available to discuss this at your next assembly meeting, if necessary. Thank you for all you do as a Fourth Degree Knight.

Let’s start making plans now to invite more men of our order to join the highest and patriotic degree of our order. Don’t wait to give someone the opportunity of a life time.

ADMIN.ASSISTANT’SREPORT

Brothers,Happy New Year! Yes, we are beginning

a new Fraternal Year. Make your New Year’s resolutions now and keep them in focus. My resolution is to be the best husband, dad, grandpa, Catholic and Knight of Columbus I can be. This includes treating everyone with respect and dignity, charity and recruiting. I believe if we treat others as we want to be treated, recruitment will come through our invitation and actions.

As we progress through the year we will be stressing the need for forms. Election of Officers, Program Personnel, the first Audit and Round Table Report should be submitted as soon as possible. Every council needs to submit Form 2629 Report of Round Table Coordinator. Even if the council only serves one parish, please submit the form. And, remember to use the following email address for the State Deputy for all forms submitted on-line: [email protected].

I encourage everyone to visit the State (www.iowakofc.org) and the Supreme (www.kofc.org) websites. You will find information and tips for recruiting, forms and training. Submit pictures and stories of your council’s events. Share your stories with all of us. Your ideas and projects may spark another council to action.

We are changing insurance carriers/agents for our Council Liability Insurance. We ob-tained competitive bids with equal coverage and decided to select the new carrier. This will allow us to maintain the same rater as last year.

Financial Secretaries will be receiving the July semi-annual and liability insurance billing shortly after the first of July. Please take im-mediate action to forward to your treasurer.

Please contact me if you have questions, need information or help; by email: [email protected], home phone 641-856-3391 or by cell at 641-895-1364.

PUBLICITYDIRECTOR’SREPORT

Publicity…How can we accomplish any-thing unless people know what we are trying to do?

As Matthew 5:16 says: “Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.” Thus, it is important that we as Brother Knights offer encouragement to Catholics to be involved on many different levels. In addition, to make contact with potential members, we must publicize our good deeds in all the places where eligible Catholic men and their families gather, through multiple formats.

Therefore, we need your stories. To submit story ideas, send an email to: [email protected].

In your email, briefly describe the Council, Assembly, or Squires project. What took place? Where did it occur? When was the project held? How much money was raised? How many hours of time were volunteered? Who was the beneficiary of the project? Give the full name of the Council, Assembly, or Circle. Make sure all places and organizations are identified by their full and proper names and location. With regards to photos, action photos are best. Il-lustrate the program. Try to stay away from people lined up in rows. Finally, please provide all possible contact information so follow-ups, interviews, etc. can be made.

We look forward to hearing of all the good works we do across Iowa based on our four core principles.

Vivat Jesus!

CEREMONIALCHAIRMAN’SREPORT

John Beckman

Greetings everyone,Our Fraternal Year has ended and it has been

a fruitful one. Let’s discuss this last fraternal year. First, I want to thank the Iowa Second and Third Degree teams for their dedication. Our degree teams sacrificed many weekends to help promote the order and our members’ progress in their councils. There were 24 Second and Third Degree Exemplifications last year which included: 10 by the Des Moines Team, five by the Lakes Team, five by the Cedar Rapids Team and two by the Davenport Team. A new Third Degree was introduced this year. The feedback on the new degree has been very favorable by our members. We encourage all members to attend one of the new degrees. I’m confident you will be impressed. Our First Degree did show some growth. Unfortunately, we are still struggling with a fourth of our councils having not participated in a First, Second or Third Degree, which means they haven’t recruited a new member for the year.

Let’s discuss the new fraternal year. Our state officers have some new programs that will be implemented for membership and ceremonials. The district deputy will be sched-uling at least one First Degree in their district each month. Each council in the district will have a turn hosting a First Degree. This is a proven program of success in the past. With the increase in First Degrees, we are confident of increases in Second and Third Degrees which will help the councils to grow in the virtues of the Knights of Columbus, which are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. The State Council has quotas for membership and ceremonial degrees from Supreme also. This year, Supreme has assessed Iowa to hold at least 48 - Second and Third Degrees. This year so far there are five Second and Third Degrees scheduled which include: Hawarden, July 22, Norwalk, July 29, Neola, August 12, Des Moines, Sept. 9 and Davenport, Oct. 8. If your council would like to host a degree please contact your district deputy. Vivat Jesus!

As we begin the 2012-2013 Fraternal Year, you will note that the format for “The Knight

Today” has changed. We have changed the page size to 8.5” by 11” so you will be able to print copies for your council members that do not have internet access.

We urge everyone to share the information and reports found in the paper with our fellow Knights and their ladies.

I would also ask everyone to forward the paper to everyone on your council’s e-mail list so all can enjoy the paper and your reports.

• ANNUAL MEETING •Review your By-Laws!

Each KC Council in Iowa has an annual election of officers and typically installation occurs in July. That is why it is appropriate time to review your By-Laws. I am pleased to report that the Iowa State Council made dramatic headway at their recent Annual meeting in April in passing eight (8) resolutions amending its By-Laws. The changes were necessary to help us stay current with the times and streamline our business procedures that made sense.

Thanks to all you delegates that saw the wisdom in these By-Law amendments that took the State Advocate’s office approximately half the year to prepare.

Now, as to your local council By-Laws. As State Advocate, procedural type questions come in and my typical response is: “What do your By-Laws say?” To which I will receive a response… “We don’t know where our By-Laws are located” or … “Don’t you keep those in your (State Advocate’s) office?”

Your local council advocate should be the keeper of the Council By-Laws. The State Ad-vocate does not keep By-Laws of the individual councils. However, your By-Laws should be accessible to anyone that requests a copy.

The council advocate is the legal representa-tive of the council and serves as the council’s attorney at trials and investigations of any interest to the council. While he does not need to be a member of the legal profession, he should be familiar with the Council By-Laws, the Order’s Charter, Constitution and Laws, Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting, and Robert’s Rules of Order.

If you cannot find your Council By-Laws after a diligent search, then the Supreme Advocate’s office recommends that you adopt form By-Laws that their office has prepared and provided. This ensures you have a set of By-Laws in which to operate and it also offers uniformity among the many Councils in the Knights of Columbus realm.

Each Grand Knight or Council Advocate can log into http://www.kofc.org and then into the Officer’s section on the website (upper right corner) and there will be a tab labeled By-Laws. From there they should be able to print a pdf version of the template. At this point, if you would like additional help, your Council Advocate or Grand Knight can contact the undersigned State Advocate.

Notice will need to be given to all members of the Council of the meeting (or special meet-

ing) to adopt the new By-Laws and procedures will need to be followed to ensure proper ac-tions are taken.

Another review area at this time might be your Articles of Incorporation. It has come to my office a few times now that corporations are at risk of expiring. Earlier in Iowa history, you could only set up a corporation for an existence of fifty (50) years. Today, you are allowed to set up a corporation’s duration to be perpetual. So if your Articles have a date certain that your Council Corporation will expire, then you will need to amend your Articles from

the limited duration to a perpetual duration. At this point, if you would like additional help, your Council Advocate or Grand Knight can contact the undersigned State Advocate. Again, procedures will need to be followed to ensure proper actions are taken.

Annual reviews are a good way to keep your Council up to date and handling business properly so the rest of the year the Knights can concentrate on the Mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney.

I am hopeful that this information is help-ful. Vivat Jesus!

FAMILYDIRECTOR’SREPORT

My dear brother Knights. As we begin a new Fraternal Year with a new State Administration leading the efforts and works of Iowa. State Deputy Joe Ramirez has trusted me with the office of Program Director and I hope that the Holy Spirit may guide me so that our works are for His glory and may help us in preaching the Gospel.

The main focus of my role as Program Director will be promoting that most of our councils can achieve their Columbian Award. One common thing I have heard from several Brothers and Councils that they do not like tooting their own horn or bragging about their charity works and they recite the Scripture “When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites … to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.” (Mt 6:2). However, if you keep on reading in Matthew you will find a new advice from Jesus: “…so by their fruits you will know them.” (Mt 7:20). The Programs of our Order is what makes us be known. Our programs are so visible that it will make others want to join our Order. It is by means of our

Program Activities in Family, Church, Com-munity, Youth, Council, and Culture of Life that we put in practice four core principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Such principles were not implemented by our founder, Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney to give glory and honor to the order or to indi-vidual Knights. They were selected because it is through practicing them that we give glory and honor to Him who gave His only Son for us, to Him who died for our sins, to Him who is the Lord and giver of live. So when you make known what you have done as Knights, always do it for God’s glory. Proclaim your faith through your programs. Also remember the letter of James: “…demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my work.” (Jm 2:18). We, the Knights of Columbus, the strong right arm of the Church are not just people in pews; we are preachers of the Word. Our Supreme Knight asks us to be better preachers. Let us start every program with prayer, offering our efforts and its fruits to our Father in heaven. Bring lots of Form 100’s as well. Be alert to the Programs promoted by the Supreme and State councils. Let others know about your success, preach through your activities and make the Columbian Award a sacrifice as Abel’s: “while Abel, for his part, brought one of the best firstlings of his flock…” (Gen 4:4). For His Glory, our works.

Que Viva Cristo Rey!

A true Christian leader is one that often returns to draw water from the well because “…whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (Jn 4:14).

The American Martyrs Retreat House will be hosting its yearly KofC Retreat starting with Mass at 8:00 PM on Friday November 9 and ending on Sunday November 11 after lunch.

The retreat will be directed by Father Brian Danner, State Chaplain of the Iowa Knights of Columbus. During your short stay you will have a private room, prayer time, talks, the Sacraments, wonderful meals and time to relax and rest in the Lord. There will be times of silence and times for conversation. In all will be time to say: “Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord?”

AMRH requests a donation of $120 for the weekend. Be the strong Christian leader our church needs. The AMRH is located at 2209 North Union Road, Cedar Falls, IA 50613

Last year we had 30 Knights attend. With over 31,000 Knights in Iowa, we can easily fill out the 60 rooms available at the American Martyrs Retreat House. The retreat is open to ALL MEN regardless of membership to the Knights.

PERPETUALMEMORIALSOCIETYREPORT

Francis Schlueter

During the month of June we received our earnings from the Christopher Fund from the Supreme Office. I am happy to say that we received a new high in earnings with a total of $30,078.56 being divided between our four bishops. Each received checks totaling $7,519.64 for their vocation funds.

Since we started the Perpetual Memorial Society in 1990 we have donated the earnings of the Christopher fund to our bishops. The total has reached $175,415.93 or $43,853.98 to sup-port vocations in their individual diocese.

I would like to see all councils and assem-blies taking an active part in this program by making an automatic donation when a mem-ber, members’s wife or other family member passes in your community. A lot of councils and assemblies do make donations on a regular basis and I would like to see all councils and assemblies joining in the program.

On the average we receive about $12,000 to $14,000 per year in donations and our expenses run around $500 per year for paper and stamps and $400 in administrative fees. A great way to reduce some of our costs is by having your donor letter returned by e-mail. All enrollee’s have a condolence letter sent to the next of kin along with an enrollment form that tells about the program.

Oelwein Council 1168 presented Sacred Heart School a check in the amount of $1571.00 from the profits of a pancake breakfast held January 29, 2012. There was a good turnout of Brother Knights and students of the school to help. A very big THANK YOU to all.
