He then took you to your new home in Philadelphia at the Eastern Baptist
Theological Seminary where he was studying, and
he carried you across the threshold into your new home – a one-room efficiency
apartment in the residence hall. It did have a bath, however.
During the next six years while Bill continued his studies in College and
Seminary, you moved seven times. From two–rooms on the third floor of a minister’s
home to three rooms on the third floor of another private home,
then to a run-down apartment,
then a duplex house shared with another Seminary
student, his wife and child – so it went.
To keep bread on the table, you found employment as a postal clerk and an
accounting clerk with the Philadelphia Life Insurance Company in center city
18
Philadelphia, near city hall, and then as a secretary at the
Philadelphia Presbytery Office.
Between classes and during the summers,
Bill was a roving employee driving a Tasty-Kake delivery truck, - well not exactly like
this one – also driving a school-bus, selling accident insurance policies and magazine
subscriptions, serving as a church janitor, and then as an Assistant Minister.
Things changed, however, when Bill was ordained in 1956 and called as the
minister of the Bethany Temple Presbyterian Church
19
You settled into a lovely home next door to the church.
What a home it was – a beautiful three story stone building – the only free-standing
single house in the neighborhood, with five bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, living room, dining
room, kitchen, fireplace, minister’s study, private garage and large backyard. You
were now a minister’s wife, a home-maker
and a Mother-to-be as seen here.
20
First there was Beth
then Barb and finally, Bev .

When Bill was invited to join the Administration at Eastern Baptist College in 1960
you moved to your eighth home – located in Glen Moore.
You lived there seven years. It was
your first home in the country where the girls could enjoy themselves in new ways.
.
22
And then to Wayne for thirty-seven years on Poplar Avenue. – home number nine
.
At that time you became a self-employed entrepreneur as the owner and manager of the
Village Market a corner grocery store. You had the help of
three low-paid employees.
23
This business was the forerunner of the now famous John’s Markets, known everywhere
for its delicious mouth-watering hoagies and the Vesper Family.
.
.
Your business experience continued when you became the manager of the
Summer Swimming Club at Eastern College and for twelve
years you were the manager of the College Book Store.
But still, you were not ready for retirement, for then you started a child-care
service in you own home for another dozen years with children like
24
Katy and Natalie Mang
Alicia and Max Weigel ,
Evan and Nathan Reed
and many others .
