President's message
Dear Friends,
This is my last message to you as ALAC President. During the past two years. Ihave enjoyed the challenge of this position and take pride in what I believe to bepositive steps forward for ALAC.
The Officers and Board members during the past two years have accom-plished much: a newly-formatted Bulletin that arrives regularly and pays itsown way; a new handbook; publication of Board meeting minutes in atimely manner; detailed treasurer's reports and prompt deposit of checks:by-laws revision underway; balloting for elective positions by an account-ing firm: to name some but not all.
None of this has been done alone. The hard work of officers, board members,committees, and ALAC members has helped achieve thpsp results and I would Iketo thank each and every one.
As they say, anything worth doing is not always easy or without controversy. Andft hasn't been. But this isn't necessarily bad. tt is important that we learn how todisagree and come to consensus. This matures us both as individuals and as anorgantcrtion, and I truly believe we have made strides in these area.
Much work remains, and Dorothy Joan Kendall will bring fresh energy and
leadership to the office. She has my support and I wish her the best.

The following board members and offi-cers were present: Marie Allman , RichardCamacho, Stephen Campbell, VictorCohen, Cassandra de la Rosa, SusanGiles, Don Hanson, Carolyn Herbel, JoyceJohanson, Brenda Schmetzel, E Ray Slectikand Marvin Whitman. There were ap-proximately twenty members also pres-ent at different times during the boardmeeting.
The meeting was called to order at 6:05pm by the President, Cassandra de laRosa. She stated in her report that thingsare moving along well, with good peopleworking hard for ALAC. The 1984 year-books are bound and the new hand-book has been completed. There is a lotoccurring and the officers, committeepersons and board members are per-forming well.
Secretary's Report: Stephen Campbellreported on correspondence receivedand noted that there have been manyinquiries concerning membership, as wellas locations of area local clubs. Thesecretary requested that all correctionsto names and addresses be forwardedto him. He stated that election results willbe announced at the annual meeting
Treasurer's Report: Carolyn Herbel re-viewed the treasurer's report for the periodFebruary 1, 1990, through July 10, 1990.The current general fund balance is$ I 1,236.40.PLEASE NOTE: A detailed report of thetreasurer is attached to these minutes.Richard Camacho made a motion thatthe report of the treasurer be accepted.Stephen Campbell seconded. Motioncarried.
All committee reports requiring action ordiscussion were reviewed. The annualmeeting will have reports from all corn-mittees. Committee reports with areas ofspecial note or mention are summarizedbelow:

Don Hanson made a motion that those hostclubs be accepted. Richard Camacho sec-onded. Motion carried.
National Specialty Coordinator: Jeanne Hopereported that the 1991 specialty is scheduledforJuly 7 through July 10, 1991, to be held at theTroy Hilton Hotel in Troy, Michigan.Jeanne announced that Mrs James E Clarkhad been selected to judge our 1993 specialtyand noted that she has had initial contact withMrs Clark. Two clubs in Region One haveindicated an interest in hosting the specialty.
Handbook: Susan Giles reported that the costof the handbook to ALAC was $2,797.68. Wehave an inventory of 105 books & 350 binders,75 of which were forwarded to Joyce Johan-son for distribution to new members, the re-maining 30 are with Susan. The Board com-mended Susan on her work in getting thehandbook published.
Yearbook: The Board reviewed and suggestedcomments, deletions and revisions to the pro-posal submitted by Amy Andrews, yearbookchairperson. The Board recommended thatDorothy Primm consult with Amy, make neces-sary changes to the proposal and resubmit it tothe board for approval. This proposal shouldinclude cost estimates and consideration forboth hard 3 ring binder, spiral or soft covertypeyearbook, and be completed by August 15, 1990.
Finance: Victor Cohen informed the Boardthat a polling was made concerning the dele-tion of photographs of previous specialty win-ners in the 1990 national specialty catalog. Thebccrcl cpprovecl doietng the photographs. An auditof the treasurer's records will be performed afterSeptember 1, 1990, by the finance committeeA lengthy report of yearbook advertising col-lections for the 1982-83 and 1984 yearbookwas deributed. Collections of past due amountstotal to date, $1,660.00 with $2,545.00 still out-standing . Several persons with outstandingbalances have lapsed their membership. Col-lection of these amounts might not be pos-sible. Richard Camacho made a motion thatthe treasurer deal with each outstanding ac-count of an active member by writing a letterto the person in question, asking for proof ofpayment within 45 days. Failure to pay mayresult in action being taken, as stated in our by-laws under Article VI. Brenda Schmelzel sec-onded the motion. Motion carried.

Twenty-five ROM Lhasa Apso breeder-exhibitors, who are recognized for their extensive knowl-edge and experience in the breed, have been asked to participate.

IQUESTION FOR THE AUGUST ISSUE:Our standard reads: "Legs - Forelegs straight; both forelegs and hind legs heavily furnished with hair."Focusing on the frond do you feel this is an adequate and sufficent description? If not please give yourinterpertation of the front assembly.
Our standard allows room for various interpretations ofones ideal Lhasa and while this can be a good thing,an explanation should be provided. Any mention offorelegs should describe the entire front assembly asangulation determines what the front should do. Thefront leg should reach out from under the body,extend itself well forward past the line of the nose, thenpush off in a smooth lifting motion and reach up backunder the body before coming to rest. Viewed fromthe front the legs should be parallel with no crossingover of the front feet. When in accelerated motion thefront legs will converge in a single track but when thedogs slows down or stands the front legs should beparallel. To get this kind of front action the Lhasashould have an angled shoulder blade of 450 withequal length of upper arm, fitting into a lower leg setunder the body, with an obvious pro-sternum. InLhasas we must allow for a moderate bend in theforelegs to accommodate a hopefully oval shaped ribcage necessary for our breed to develop lung power.Lately Lhasa are turning up with straight up and downshoulders set well into the neck, slab sides with nosternum, front legs extended far forward so as to beterrier-like straight with no set-under. Lhasas should beable to cover a lot of ground in a Lhasa manner andthey should not move in front like a wire fox terrier.Lhasa breeders have come far in terms of presentinga beautifully sculpted outline with lovely hair but lets tryto maintain correct structure under the hair.

Forelegs straight is a wonderful "pie in the sky" idea but,in my hundred years experience, I have only seen oneLhasa that truly fits that description! Our breed comefrom the norther most region of the world and the thinair forced the dogs to have large lung capacities andtherefore the front legs had to wrap around the chestarea. It should say "forelegs as straight as possible".The hair part is okay.

The whole front assembly should be dicussed. Shoul-ders well laid back and clean, not loaded and/or
overly muscled. Should have shoulder blade andupper arm of equal lenght with tight fitting elbows,forelegs straight. Should have a pronounced pro-sturnum. Excessive curvature in the ankles is not desir-able. Shoulders when viewed from the top shouldhave one to two finger widths between the blades.

I feel our standard is too vague overall. Fore-legs, hindquarters, topline and movement all need tobe addressed separately, as well as over all balance.FRONT QUARTERSSHOULDERS are well lad back, elbows clean and close tothe body.FORELEGS well muscled, straight and when viewed fromthe front, parallel to each other, feet should neither toe in orout to excess.HINDQUARTERS should be strong, muscled and well an-gulated .when viewed from the rear should be parallelturning neither in nor out.Forelegs and hindquarters heavily furnished with hair.GAIT when viewed from the side should exhibit good exten-sion of fore quarters and balanced drive from the rear for asmooth, effortless stride with no roll or bounce of body,topline level.

In order to safeguard our breed standard frompossible misinterpretation I feel that we need to pro-vide a more comprehensive description of the idealLhasa Apso.
Our original standard requests, by omission, anormal canine front and movement. This means thatwe should be striving for a 45 - degree lay-back ofshoulder, with just enough room between the tops ofthe shoulder blades for the withers (the first eightthoracic vertebrae) to rest comfortable between them.The upper arm should be of good length, preferablyequal in length to the shoulder blade, and attachedto the shoulder blade at a 90-degree angle. Theelbows should be held close to the body at the

Obedience: Brenda Schmelzel discussed a Lhasa that isactive in herding trials and noted that Lhasas are noteligible for AKC hearding titles. Brenda Schmelzel madea motion that ALAC support the opening of herdingactivities and ties to all breeds and that our AKC delegateconvey ALAC'S support by voting in favor of all breedsparticipating in these herding trials. Joyce Johanson sec-onded the motion. Motion carried.
Raffle: Carolyn Herbel discussed the enthusiasm thattheraffle has generated amongst the membership andspeciatty clubs. Carolyn Hebei made a motion that no raffle
can be held at the ncrtional specialty except that sponsored byALAC or by permission of the raffle chairperson. BrendaSchmetel seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Gazette: It was announced by the president that thecurrent gazette columnist, Connie Tompkins has re-
signed. Two letters of interest for the position were read
by the president. Ray Sledzik made a motion that
Patricia Chenoweth be appointed columnist. Brenda
Schemlzel seconded the motion. Motion carried.
National Specialty Catalog Advertising: Marianne Nixon
distributed a detailed report of the 1990 catalog adver-
tising. ALAC'S profit will be approximately $2,732.00 less
committee expenss. Marianne was commended for
an excellent job.
OLD/NEW BUSINESSRichard Camacho submitted a proposal and suggestedthat the board review it. It deals with the AKC "hands on"
testing. He feels that in certain instances the hands on
includes breeder judges and group judges that are
unfamiliar with our breed and not qualified to be in-
volved with this process.
Stephen Campbell made a motion that the Heart of
America Lhasa Apso Club, which has been diligently
collating our yearbook inventory, mail 12 copies to the
persons in Australia, who have patiently been awaiting
these books. They will be sent without binders. Susan
Giles seconded the motion. Motion carried. Once the
yearbooks are mailed, the secretary will follow up with aletter.
Beverly Drake made a recommendation for board con-
sideration that the nominating committee be appointed
by the new board shortly after September 1, 1990, in
order to provide sufficient time for the selection of
candidates for the 1991-1992 slate. The secretary will
solicit nominationsfor the committee by mail shortly after
September 1990.
There was lengthy discussions concerning the possibili-
ties and consideration of:1. One permanent national specialty location.
2. Continuing the roving specialty or considering 3areas rather than one.

3. Regional futurities, 12 sites.4. One national futurity.The following motions were made concerning the above:Carotyn Herbel made a motion that ALAC initiate 12 regionalfuturities, whereas the puppy and adult winners wouldqualify to compete at the national specialty for the titleof grand futurity winner. This would be for an initial threeyear period commencing 1993.These regional futurities would each be held in conjunc-tion with the same (each year) all breed show with ALACsupporting the entry. In addition, all these regionalfuturities would take place prior to the national spe-cialty's closing of entries. Stephen Campbell secondedthe motion. Motion carried.Brenda Schmelzel made a motion that the membershipbe polled regarding three futurity options:1. Same as now, four regions.2. One futurity in conjunction with the national.3. That described in previous motion, 12 regions.Susan Giles seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Susan Giles made a motion that there be a single datefor our national specialty, during the third week of Juneeach year, hosted by ALAC and commencing in 1993.Don Hanson seconded the motion. Motion carried.Joyce Johanson made a motion that a committeecomprised of Carolyn Herbel, Victor Cohen, Don Han-son and Susan Giles conduct a poll for selection of either
a permanent or roving national specialty and coordi-nate it with the futurity poll motion listed above. DonHanson seconded the motion. Motion carried.
There was a brief discussion regarding committee chair
vacancies. Susan Giles will publish a listing of these va-cancies in the bulletin.
Carolyn Herbel noted that all ALAC receipt of fundsshould go through the treasury. Richard Camachomade a motion that all committee receipts be for-warded to the treasurer for deposit in the parent club'Sgeneral account. Marvin Whitman seconded the mo-tion. Motion carried.
Carolyn Herbel made a motion that ALAC always sup-port the Lhasa entry at any all breed show, where afuturity is being held. Joyce Johanson seconded themotion. Motion carried.
There was a discussion regarding the commercial sale of
the ALAC bulletin cover. Carolyn Herbel made a motionthat the front cover of the bulletin be purchased, but byinvitation only. Examples of the cover would include:
BOB national, BOS national, high in trial national, grandfuturity winner, top producing dog and bitch, top win-ning dog and bitch, top junior, ROM dogs and bitches.
Stephen Campbell seconded the motion. Motion car-ried.
There was considerable discussion regarding the status
of our breed standard committee. Norman Herbel,

Ray Sledzik gave the Board a delegates report includingAKC's recommendation that parent clubs revise theirstandards, where necessary.

Meeting called to order at 7:15pm by thepresident. AD board members that were atthe board meeting the previous eveningwere present and there were approximatelyseventy ALAC members present:
President's Report: Cassandra de la Rosathanked all club members, committee chairsand board members, who have made hertwo years as president rewarding. She alsowarmly thanked the members of the hostclub, the Lhasa Apso Club of NorthernCalifornia for their effort and work in mak-ing our national specialty a great success.She added that she feels pleased that hergoals of providing administrative servicesto the club during the past two years hasbeen accomplished, as well as being suc-cessful.She wished our new president all the best.

Upon completion of the local club liaisonreport by Kay Hales, Ray Sledzik made amotion that the committee prepare andpresent to the Board an information bro-chure to be used for distribution to newmembers. Seconded by Richard Camacho.Motion carried.
Upon completion of the national specialtycoordinator report by Jeanne Hope, a dis-cussion involving judges selection took place.Barbara Wood made a motion to return tothe system of judges selection, by providinga run-off of the top 2 judges receiving thehighest number of votes in the voting of 10 forthe national specialty judges selection.Seconded by Florence Edlkraut. Motion carried.
Upon completion of the yearbook distributionreport by Evelyn Bigman, June O'Brien made amotion that a copy of all yearbooks and order-froms be sent to the local club liaison's of al activespecialty clubs for the purpose of sales promo-tion. Seconded by Kay Hales. Motion carried.
Upon completion of the bulletin report bySusan Giles, Barbara Wood made a motionthat the editor of the bulletin be allowed toaccept advertising for the front cover at theeditor's complete discretion within ALACbulletin guidelines. Seconded by June O'Brien.Motion carried.

brisket line. Our standard specifically asks for a straight
foreleg, which is consistent with a normal canine front.
However, it should also serve to caution us against the
dog that is excessively long-bodied or low-stationed as
these conditions are almost always accompanied by a
bowed forearm, broken-down pasterns and turned out
feet. This type of dog (achondroplastic) is usually too
heavy-boned as well. Continuing down the foreleg we
should have pasterns that are sloping very sightly: end-
ing on small, tight, round, cat-like feet with good pads,
that may toe-out just slightly while standing.
Front movement should be strong and smooth,
with the forelegs reaching out well ahead of the body as
they single-track. There should be no hint of a roll,
bounce or hackney. Head carriage on the correct front
in motion should be not higher than 45-degrees. Ex-
tremely erect head carriage suggests an inefficient
front, one that is using the neck muscles to help give the
legs enough lift to come forward. The over-all picture
should be one of a powerful, ground covering stride with
no exaggeration present.

For years we have felt that the standard should
be revised to form a more complete picture of the
Lhasa. Many novice breeders focus only on the parts
mentioned in the standard - not the whole dog. As in
most instances, it is a mistake to assume that all newcom-
ers will take the time and have the resources to learn
anatomy and movement.Focusing on the front, the following are some of
the points we would like to see included in the standard
for the Lhasa Apso:Shoulders should be well laid back, sloping, and
lie close to body. Shoulder blade and upper arm should
be equal in length. Forelegs straight with moderate
bone and heavily furnished with hair. When viewed from
the front, forelegs should be parallel to each other.
Elbows lie close to body but with sufficient room to allow
for freedom of movement. Feet round and compact
with well arched toes. Elbows and feet should turn
neither in nor out. Dewclaws may be removed.

"Legs—Forelegs, straight"Much emphasis is placed on the front structure
of a dog because its quality influences and is influenced
by the placement of the neck into the shoulders and the
back into the wither. A good front is hard to replace
when lost because much more is involved than just the
front itself. There are three major areas of front structure.
First, the wither, where the neck and shoulder blades
meet the spine, should be smooth, sloping neatly along
the top and side planes and fitting into the back without
a dip or weakness. The shoulder blade should lay at a
s2alistic thirty-five degree angle just above vertebral
processes. Secondly, the shoulder joint itself should be
placed tightly against the chest wall with no "loaded"
feel to it. It should appear near the base of the throat as
there is no prominent keel in the Lhasa since that would
be too much weight to carry in a mountainous terrain.
Thirdly, the legs. Our whole standard is one of
comparison to other dogs of Lhasa type(Tibetan Terrier,
Pekingese, Shih Tzu, etc.) A call for straight front legs
means the legs are not typical of a Achondroplastic
dog, though the Lhasa is really a partial Achondroplas-
tic mutation. When viewed from the front, the legs
should stand fair and square and should not be bowed,
turned at the pastern or out at the elbow. The elbow
should be well in against the body to the point that you
should not be able to get a finger in easily between it
and the chest wall. When viewing the front from the side,
the elbow should be in position just below the sternum
denoting a lung capacity in the length of the chest
rather than a heavier depth of chest. There should be a
sense of strength without being overdone and ele-
gance without being fragile or pigeon-boned. Balance
is the key. Slapping a "good front" on a dog must be
tempered with balance to its rear.

I don't feel that this description gives an adequate word
picture of a correct front assembly.
There is no mention of shoulder layback or (roper set in relation
to the front legs.
In order to have correct movement even in specialized struc-
ture the shoulders should be properly placed and the ideal
equation of the 45 degree angle should be included, also the
equal length of leg and shoulder bones is also important as the
short upper arm is a major fault in most breeds today. Straight
legs do not constitute an ideally structured front.

The standard's description of legs is not sufficient, espe-
cially when focusing the front, as it is the only place in the
standard where a hint of what the front should be is
given. While most experienced breeders assume the
front should be that of normal dog structure, a necessarY
function of the standard is to educate newcomers
judges , exhibitors and breeders: and to only mention
straight forelegs heavily furnished with hair is an injustice
to the Lhasa.
An entire section of the standard should be devoted to
forequarters, with descriptions of the neck, shoulder
blades , length of shoulder blade and upper arm, the
angle where the shoulder blade meets the upper arm.

My interpretation of the correct Lhasa front is:
Free-flowing movement in front calls for a long, strongneck rising from properly placed shoulders. Shoulderblades slope forward and downward toward theground and meet ,the upper am, equal in length tothe shoulder blade, at a 90% angle. The lhasa apso iswell ribbed up, but not barrel shaped. The shoulderblade and upper arm wrap around the ribs and theelbows are tight. Forelegs straight, heavily furnishedwith hair. Feet are well feathered, round and catlike,with good pads.

could answer this both yes and no. On the no side,
the Standard is simple and to the point, no room tomisunderstand, indicating that the front and rearbone structure is that of a normal canine, with heavyleg furnishings In the 17th editionof AKC's The Complete Dog Book, pictured on page747 is an excellent drawing of a straight front. On thenext page is an illustration of a correct hind end.Other excellent illustrations and interpretations of dogterminology are contained in this Glossary section.
On the yes side, the front assembly begins with theshoulders. Gook layback is necessary for both propermovement and proper length of the upper arm bone.
If the shoulder blade is too upright, Mother Nature willshorten the bones of the upper arm and place thelegs too far forward on the body. This also affects theplacement of the elbows and their degree of loose-ness.
The angulation of the rear quarters should match that
of the front with good angulation at the stifles andhocks.
IN SUMMARY: Legs - Shoulders well laid back, forelegsstraight. The angulation of the rear quarters shouldmatch that of the front with good angulation at thestifles and hocks; both forelegs and hind legs heavilyfurnished with hair.

Daughter of BIS Ch Tibet of Cornwallis ROM, the breeds's top producer of champions, Nik Ki
is the dam, grandam and great grand dam of Champions. She was truly a credit to her pure
Hamilton heritage. Nik Ki was more than we ever dared to dream. She filled 16 years with
great joy and wonderful memories. And it was too short a time. Nik Ki was all that God meant
a Lhasa Apso to be and I guess He could not bear to be without her any longer. Nik Ki, we
miss you so much.

Elbows should be held tightly against the body, not
out.
Forearms should be relatively straight, down to the
carpal joint. Pasterns slightly just off the center line, for
balance.Hocks should have good angulcrtion - which gives a
long efforless stride and smooth gait.
Angulation at shoulders and hip joints should be approxi-
mately equal, to provide balanced reach in the front
and rear.Front and rear legs should be heavily coated.

Legs - Forelegs straight does not adequately describe
the Lhasa. This description lends itself to two interpreta-
tions. First the leg should have ulna and radius bones
that are as straight as possible. As a general rule the
longer the leg, the straighter these bones appear.
Conversely, the shorter the leg the more curvature to
these bones, especially the radius bone. To grasp this
concept, first thing of a Dalmatian's legs, the a Dachs-
hund. The Second interpretation deals with the place-

ment of the legs as the dog stands - the legs should be
parallel as opposed to a "fiddle front" where the care-
pal joints almost touch. The standard neglects to point
out that the toes should toe out about 10o for balance
- a point well documented in books on movement such
as R P Elliott. The standard does not address the
shoulder assembly and the degree of the shoulder
layback desired. It is assumed that the standard 450
shoulder is the norm.. Detailing the amount of coat on
the legs would be best placed under a description on
coat.

This is very misleading. Terriers have straight fronts, both
above and below the elbow; which accounts for their
gait.
A Lhasa's two legs should be straight from the elbow
down. However, above the elbow a slight curve should
be allowed to allow for the chest to expand. Elbows
should be tight to his body.

This is the third and last of a series of articles which attempt to
provide the dog owing pLiolc with an over-kiew of the rnedcinci prociacts

PART III: Cough & Cold, Eye. Miscellaneous
COUGH PREPARATIONS: The cough preparations avalable on
a non-prescription basis can be chided into two man categories, non-
narcotic and narcotic. The frst category usuaily contains either an antihista-
mine to dry tp rasci secretions, which can irritate the throat ci dextrom-
ethorphan, a centrally octng cough suppressant Dextromethorphcn.
abbreviated as DM, is a very effective cough superesscnt in a dosage range
of 10-30 mg., given every 4-6 hours. This translates into 1 teaspoonful to 1
tablespconfLi for most cough prepcscrticrs. Examples of these products are
Robitussin DM a Benylin DM. and the Vicki Forma° 44 croup. Most of
these products also are sold in the generic forms, at a 3:n/rigs of 50% or
more.Narcotic cough preparcrtiors usudy contain codeine a one of its
synthetic derivatives and are very effective in suppressing the cough reflex.
The major imiting factors are the drowSness and datness that may
sometimes be Sde effects. The narcotic cough products must be signed for
at the prescription counter and are knifed to a 2 dice supply in a 72 hour
time period. Corsuft with you veterinarian if the cough persists beyond this
time. The usual dose is 1-2 teaspoonfuls every 6-8 hours.
The other man ingredent in most couch preparcrtions is an expec-
torant, such as gi..rafenesin or terpin hydrate. These compounds break up
thick mucus, thirning it out, and allaying it to be expelled easier. it is
therefore necessary to provide plenty of water. so that these expectorants
can be most effective. Most dogswl tolerate the gUafenesin better than the
terpin hydrate. since the latter is usuak in eixirs of hilip alcoholic content
(40-44%) to irnprove its solubility. Both of these products aiso cane in
generic forms. at considerable savings.
DECONGESTANTS: The onset of a cold virus, or upper
respiratory allergies, can produce clogged, stuffy nasal passages in dogs as
wed as hLrnans. The judicious shat-term use of nasof decongestants can
help alleviate this problem. Phemiepriine (Neo %inept-rine) and oxyrneta-
zolne (Afrn) ore probably the two most commcrty used products avcidde.
The latter drug is much longer acting than the former and shoUd only be
Lsed once or twice daily. Fhenyiephrine has a much shater duration of
action and can be used as often as every 6 hours. I waid recommend using
the pediatric strengtts of either product, as the alit strengths cakl have
enougn systemic absorption to cause acidems, esoeciaty n °Icier dogs with
heart a blood premix& condtions. Do not use any decongestant for more
than 72 nous, a drug tolerance ad rebcxrd congestion may occur.
Generic equivcients are avciable for both of these carpal:ids.
Cnce the mad pasages cre opened. they often become dry and
irritated due to scratching a repeated exposse to allergens This condition
can be remedied by the use of naid scrays of phrySologoal saine to keep
the affected tissues moist. These include such products as Ocean a Ayr,
and are normally located with the nasal decongestants If the patient 's cri
older dog with congestive heat faiLze a high blood pressue. please check
wrth your veterinarian before Laing saine nasal sprays as the sodium can be
cpsorbed from irritated nasal membranes.
ANTIHISTAMINES: This category of drugs is often included in
multi-symptom odd preparations because one of its Side effects is the
reduction of mucus secretions in the upper respiatcry tract. This drying
effect can present probiems n elderly male dogs, causing urincry retention
and irritation of the prostate gond. They can dso aggravate some forms of
gizucorna.The aignal use fa crthhistamines was the prevention and/or the
reief of the symptoms of °logo reactions. ranging from hay fever symp-
toms to anaphylactic reactions coused by insect bites a stings If given early

enough. antihistamines can geatly reduce the severity of most affergc
reations. The two compounds most commonty seen on pharmacy OTC
shelves are dphenhydramine (Benadryf) and chlapheriramine (Chiortrime-
ton). Both of these products are available n generic forms. at a cost
reduction of 25-6J% Folow the dosage recanmendatia-s on the package
as to Sze and weight. These drugs have a broad safety range, but dosage n
small dogs (Iess than 20 pounds) stioUd be discussed with a veterinarian.
ANALGESICS & AM1PYRETICS: These are drugs that relieve
mild to moderate pcin and reduce fevers. Most of the non-prescription
products in this claw of drugs contain ether aspirin a acetaminophen, a
even combinations of the two together. They are ovoid:0e ha wide vaiety
of tcsblets caplets. capesies, and even laid dosage forms. and are sad in
both generic crid brand nornes. Aspain should be the drug of choice in dogs
(and cats, too) given in a dose of 3W-6W mg (depending on thes'rze and
weight of the animal) every 8-12 hours. Because of the less sophisticated
rxrlue of carine and feine ivers, acetcrninciden shotid be avoided. Tok
by-products of acetcrrinopien can permanently damage the liver and
.kheys of dogs and cats. especially when exposed to them on a chrond
basis. Other, newer analgesics, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Nuain, etc.) are
0150 now on the OTC shelves, but I would not recommend them without
conferring with you veterinaricn. My own experience with ibuprofen ended
with two cases of explosive diarrhea in two older dogs with arttritis.
In treating a dog fa arthritisi have seen dosages of up to six (6)
aspirin tablets per day in three divided doses. Enteric coated aspirin (Ecotrin)
a buffeted aspirin (Bufferin a Ascriptin) are the preferred forms, as they
minirritsso the irritation that high-dose soicytates can produce in the stomach.
EYE PREPARATIONS: Non-prescription eye products can be
cfrvided into three basic categories eyewates to cease the eye; Uoricants
to keepihe eye mist; and, decongestants to reduce rillcmmaticri and 'get
the red out. The eyewashes are usually buffered, isotonic salt mixtures that
are used to flush foreign materials from the eye, such as sand gains, pollen.
a chemicals. Examples include Dacriose. and Sodium Chloride
for irrigation.The eye lubricants cane in two forms icitid drops and ointment.
The crops act as artificial teas, keeping the timues moist and clean. They
include such products as isopto-Tears. Hypotears, and Tearisci. A generic
eqUvalent is avalable for some of these products. The lubricant ointments,
sx:h as Wort-Lute, are more commody used at bedtime, because they
produce a longer lasting form of lubrication and protection. They are also
exceient in protecting the eyes from harsh chemicais and water, which itself
can rob the eyes of vital lUoriccrtion. Administration of a ktricaft ointment
before batting cxn geatty reduce the irritation to the eye caused by socp
cnd water.Decongestants for the eye work on the same principle as nasal
ciecongestords, reducing nAcrnmation and contracting the vasaidure of the
eye, thereby reducing the reddened appecrcnce. Chroric use should be
dscouaged as it can cause dryng of the exposed tissues and a reduction in
the tear flow. Examples include VI:sine, Prefin, Murine Pius, and Clear Eyes.
A few of these products, such as Zncfrin. VasoClear A. and Vsine AC also
contc:in tric sUfate. an astringent used to contract the blood vessels and
decrease raciness. Prolonged use of these products can be very imitating to
#c menThere are atso Iwo ophthalmic ointments that have a cisinfectant
action, that is, they prevent the gowth of most bacteria. These ointments are
5% Boric Acid ointment and 2% Yellow Mercuric Oxide ointment. They
protect the eye from infections after a physical inLry. such as a scratch adaaSon, but are not very effective if an infection is already present. This
usially requires an antibiotic, either localy or systemically.
MISCELLANEOUS PRODUCTS: Anumberofmedicationsand
other products that normally would not be considered as therapeutic in dogs
can provide suraising resits in unexpected situations. For example. Vrtarnin
E al. usualy found in the cosmetic section and used to reverse the aging
process in skin, is an excellent skin softener, reducing the size and hardness
of caluses on etrows and hocks. and prevent scot tissue from hardening

The Lhasa Apso standings for 1990 are based on a point system as follows:
Best In Show 10 points Group 2 4 points
Best In Specialty Show 5 points (ALAC 10 pts.) Group 3 3 points
Group 1 5 points Group 4 2 points
In the event of point ties, rankings are based on the dog with the highest number of Best of Breed wins.
After that dogs are listed alphabetically.
This year's list includes all Champions that won at least two Best of Breed and any class dog that had at
least one group placement..

benzon tincture, or compound benzcin tincture. These compuonds arenormally used by physicians to protect and toughen skin arould wounds andunder hard casts. h dogs these tinctues can be applied to the feet,toughening the pads and promoting the healing of tender pods, such ascaused by over-expcs_re to rough concrete or sharp rocks, Once or twicedaily applications are usually all that is needed. You may not find thisproduce on the regular OTC shelves, but since it does not require aprescription, most pharmacists can order it for you. ft takes 10-15 minutes tocompletely dry, so its resultant sticky film is an excellent substitute for TackyPaw or other traction compounds. One wad of caution, ft will stain hair, sobe coreki what and where you use these products.
One other interesting treatment involves the oral antacids,especialy Maalox, or Riopan and large, open, weeping, infected sores, suchas those caused by excessive chewing or as a result of deep pknciurewounds. Topical application of these antacids can inhbt the gowth of somebacteria that nfect th= kinds of wounds. Many pathogenic woLnd bacteriaprefer an acidic environment, and the antacids neutralte this condition. Inaddition, the magnesium and aluminum salts found in most antacids possessastrngent properties and promote tissue wound granulations, therebyaccelercrtng the hearing process. Application 's usualty after clearsing thewound, or at least three times daily.
The last item that I wish to speak about involves a prescriptionmedication, but I strongly uge all dog owners to check with their veterinarianabout obtaining a product called an Anakit. It is an irsect sting allergy kit thatcould very easily save the life of your dog. How often at shows have youseen bees and wcsps cluster around garbage cars that contan food anddrink refuse? Dogs get stung, especially by aggressive yellow jackets. Iknow of a very beautiful Bearded Collie bitch that was lost at a show just 2weeks after fining her championship. After snapping a bee that buzzedher, she swallowed the bee and it slung her in the throat. Since a veterinar-ian was only on call" to the shows, the animal died of asphyXation beforehelp could be summoned. The presence of an Am:kit might have saved her.It contains a prefilled syringe of epinephrine. a touniquet, and 2 tablets of a
fast-acting antihistamine. These drugs can counteract the immediate effects
of anaphylactic shock and give that extra 15-20 minutes that could be thecifference between ife and death. Agcin, I uge dl dog owners to check withtheir veterinarians about obtaining a prescription for an Anakit. They normallycost about S18-$20 but that woud seem to be a srnal price to pay for peace-of-mind. The kit comes with directions enclosed and you veterinarian cangive you the correct dosage for the epinepl-rine and how to jve it.

Gazette can be a frustrcrfing and sometimes futie e>perience. That'swhy we are turning to you for help.
The photograph needs to be of a breed that has not beenrecently featued on on cover. We can not use photogcphs of dogsthat cre beng campagned—prefercbty, the dog shock be either re-tied or deceased, or a puppy which has not yet embarked on a showcareer. The dog rrtst be an exceient representative of the breed. Tomeet the formatting requirements of the Gazette cover, the photomust be square, tending toward horizontal. The Gazette requiresfirst time pUolishing rights to ail photographs. We prefer color trans-parencies of dogs in natural poses (not stacked) in a seasonaloutdoor setting. (Quality prints and stucio shots with plan backdropsand no props are occasionally acceptable.) And, of couse, thephotograph should be well composed, with the dog in very sharpfocus, with an attractive backgound and good contrast.
We ore hopeti that al national breed clubs w be wing towork with us to acquire suitable photographs for future Gazettecovers.
