We pass this contestidea along as an excellent way of stimulating individual Bible study as well as ameans of creating fellowship amongneighboring churches. T HE Machen Leagues of NorthernNew Jersey have just completed a
year's contest which other League groupsmight do well to copy. Each MachenLeaguer was to keep a notebook, including notes from personal Bible study, outlines of messages, notes on Bible classes.Bible pictures and maps, clippings frommagazines and newspapers, and almost anyother similar material.
At a week-end conference at Phillips-
burg, N. J., the contestants submittedtheir notebooks, which were judged bythe Rev. Edmund P. Clowney. The firstprize of Jamieson, Fausset and Brown'sone volume Commentary on the Bible wasawarded to Judy Ward of East Orange(middle). Dorothy Partington of Westfield received the second prize of a DavisBible Dictionary. The prizes were presented by the "Rev. John F. Gray, pastor ofCalvary Church, Ringoes.
Within the attractive gray and red becellophaned cover of Judy's book were anumber of original water color drawings,along with the other material. Dorothvincluded in hers outlines of all but two ofthe Rev. Robert L. Atwell's sermons forthe year!

president decided that they might as wellopen the meeting. They asked the songleader to take charge of the song service.He got up and leafed through the hymnalwithout seeing anything" that struck him,so in despair he asked for requests. Aftera request was named, he discovered thepianist was not there yet, so he asked fora volunteer. None appearing, he pickedone himself. After the song service theleader announced the one who was toread the Scripture. Having received theassignment only a few minutes before,the girl stumbled over the reading. Whenit was time for the offering, the plateswere not located, so one of the girlsoffered her purse as a substitute. Thespeaker had received her topic only thatmorning and had to read it rather thanpresent it in her own words. There wasno time for the discussion questions because the meeting had started late andthe song service was so long.
This surely was not an actual meeting,you say! No, it was not. But perhaps yousee things in it that are cmbarrassinglyfamiliar to you from some of your ownmeetings. W ell, what is wrong with it?Listen to the words of Paul, "Let allthings be done decently and in order."Let us burn these words into our mindsand make them the touchstone for ouryoung people's meetings in the future.Remember, this is the Lord's work. Itshould receive our best!

victory, Paul could say with respectto his earthly existence: "For I havelearned, in whatsoever state I am,therewith to be content."
So far we have established theprinciple that Christian ·thanksgiving isnot dependent upon material wellbeing. Whether during Britain'sdarkest hour, or on Bataan, the believer in Christ never says in a cynicaltone, "Thanksgiving for what?"Rather he says with Job, "I know thatmy redeemer liveth," and with Paul,"But thanks be to God, which givethus the victory through our Lord JesusChrist."
Let us look a little more closely atthe victory which God gives to usthrough Christ. It is a victory oversin, over death, and over the law.The human race died in Adam. "As inAdam all die." "Wherefor, as by oneman sin entered into the world, anddeath by sin; and so death passedupon all men." "By one man's offence,death reigned by one." Because theguilt of Adam's first sin has been laidto the account of the whole humanrace, all died in him, and all inheriteda sinful nature from him. "By Oneman's disobedience many were madesinners." "By the offence of one, judgment came upon all men to condemnation" (Rom. 5). The strength ofsin is the law. The law of God aggravates sin. Men do not realize thegravity of their sinfulness without it.Apart from the law,our consciousnessof sin remains to a.Iarge extent.idormanto The law convicts 0 us of'<oursin, but does not give us victoryover it.
The victory comes from God. Thatis why Paul says, "Thanks be untoGod." God is the author of our salvation. "God so loved the world thathe gave his only begotten Son." Thevictory is given to us through ourLord Jesus Christ. By His active obedience, by His living a sinless life andfulfilling the law of God perfectly,He merited for us the righteousnessof God and eternal life. By Hispassive obedience He suffered death,the penalty of sin and the law, as oursubstitute, and thereby 0 .set us free.His resurrection is a seal that God

when he says, "Thanks be to God,which giveth us the victory throughour Lord Jesus Christ."
Because the world's most basic conflict, between the forces of Satan andthe Son of God, has resulted in theutter destruction 0 of the enemies ofChrist, His servants can be in a constant state of praise and thanksgiving.
"The strife is o'er, the battle done;The victory of life is won;The song of triumph has begun.
Alleluia!"The believer in Christ rests assured
with thankful heart that the battleagainst the flesh, the devil, and theworld, is done. If need be, he can remain utterly indifferent to the worldlyconflicts which go on from age to age.There should never be a Thanksgiving 0 day problem for Christians. Allearthly victories, including the mostrecent one, are disappointing. at best.They usher in what might be calleda mere truce before another outbreak.But at the very jaws of physical death,the child of God can be calm, serene,and thankful that Christ has givenhim the victory over eternal death andthe grave.
In the midst of his afflictions, Jobwas able to cry out in faith, "For Iknow .that my redeemer liveth, andthat he shall stand at the latter dayupon the earth: and though after myskin worms destroy this body, yet inmy flesh I shall see God." Job knewthat his Redeemer had 'conquereddeath, and so he was assured of hisown immortality and resurrection ofthe body. He could be indifferent tothe fluctuations of worldly prosperity,and when adversity struck, he declared, "The Lord gave, and the Lordhath taken away; blessed be the nameof the Lord." "Though he slay me,yet will I trust in him."
In much the same state of mind,the apostle Paul declares in I Corinthians 1 5: "Death is swallowed upin. victory. 0 death, where is thysting? 0 grave, where is thy victory?The sting of death is sin; and thestrength of sin is the law. But thanksbe to God, which giveth us the victorythrough our Lord Jesus Christ." Having this confidence of eternal life and

1945? The person with a dreary 'outlook on life might have expressedsuch a sentiment during the recentyears of the world's worst war. Evenas late as Thanksgiving 1944, humanity was still struggling in the toils of aglobal war. But now things 0 are different. In the wake of victory is therenot abundant reason to pour forthgratitude to divine Providence on theday so observed by American tradition?
The pessimist, however, might stillask in a gloomy mood, "Thanksgivingfor what?" World War II solved oneset of problems only to open manymore. At the time of the writing ofthis article, Chinese communists arefighting Chinese nationalists. TheMiddle East is torn by strife and turmoil. Unrest in Germany threatensopen revolt. South American politicsare more unsteady than usual. Laborand management in the United Statesare constantly at loggerheads. It issaid that strikes may affect the employment of seven million people. Sothe pessimist might seem to havesome grounds for his lack of enthusiasm in approaching the annualday when the nation expresses itsgratitude and thanks. .
But this title has not been chosento reveal a cynical attitude towardlife, as suchan expression might oftendo. Rather it is intended to challengeour minds to ask sincerely what constitutes a truly Christian thanksgiving.Weare indeed grateful for the triumphs which the United Nationsrealized this spring and summer. Thisyear's observance should be especiallysignificant because it follows the defeat of those powers which soughtto undermine the very foundations ofChristian civilization and who setthemselves and took counsel againstthe Lord and His Anointed.
Above and beyond this, however,the Christian should be in a constantspirit of thanksgiving for the final,complete, and unconditional victorywhich his Lord has won over deathand sin. The apostle Paul voices thetrue gratitude of the church of Christ

Seminary OtlersNovel Course
DURING the second term of thepresent academic year, West
minster Seminary will offer a novelcourse in personality problems. Theinstructor will be the Rev. EdwardHeerema, Th.M., a graduate of theSeminary, who has for a number ofyears served as Spiritual Advisor at theChristian Sanatorium, Wyckoff, NewJersey. There Mr. Heerema has hadunusual opportunity to study the tensions which arise in connection withthe problems of everyday living.
The course will be entitled "TheChristian Faith and Healthy Person- .ality" and will be given on Mondayafternoons, from 2:00 to 4:00 o'clock,beginning January 21, 1946, and ending April aznd.
Alumni of the Seminary may register for the course on the openingday. Others who wish to be admittedas regular students should communieate with the registrar at their earlyconvenience concerning admission.Auditors will be admitted by advancearrangement with the registrar, andthose who wish to attend on this basisshould signify their intention in ampletime.
Charles E. Stanton and the Rev. Clarence W. Duff, Orthodox Presbyterianmissionaries to Eritrea, East Africa,and prayers were offered for God'sblessing upon their work. The offeringof approximately $54 was sent toGrace Church, Los Angeles, whichis urgently in need of a place of worship. Before and after the receivingof the offering, solos were renderedby Mrs. John W. Betzold. '
The address of the afternoon wasdelivered by the Rev. Leslie A. Dunnof Wildwood, N. J., who told of thetrials and triumphs attending thelaunching of the Boardwalk GospelPavilion at Wildwood, and of thegenuine results of personal workamong the visitors to that project. Hepointed out that the Pavilion is ingreat need of more helpers, especiallya pianist and someone to work withthe children.
The meeting of the Presbyterialwas concluded with the singing of ahymn and the pronouncement of thebenediction by the Rev. Wilson Albright of Trenton, N. J.

Philadelphia PresbyterialMeets in Wilmington
EIGHTY-THREE delegates wereenrolled at the Fall meeting of
the Presbyterial Auxiliary of the Presbytery of Philadelphia which was heldon October 25th at Eastlake Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, Delaware. Presiding was Mrs.Charles Richardson of Willow Grove,President of the Auxiliary.
The morning session began with adevotional period led by Mrs. W. C.Patterson of the host church and,following a business session, a forumon Christian schools was conductedby Mrs. Edward L. Kelloggof Middletown, Pa. Mrs. Kellogg was assistedby several of the ladies who took partin a series of tableaux. Mrs. RobertS. Marsden portrayed an interviewwith a parent of a prospective pupilof the Christian school at Middletown. This was followed by a demonstration of a typical class period, conducted by five pupils and one of theirteachers, Mrs. Ralph Tyson. Next,three parents of Willow Grove Christian School pupils discussed thevirtues of the project over a cup oftea. The sketches were concluded witha dialogue between a Middletownparent and one of her neighbors, discussing the subject from the financialangle and agreeing that the sacrificewas well worthwhile.
Following luncheon and a devotional period, letters were read fromMrs. Francis E. Mahaffy, Mrs.

accepted His sacrifice as full paymentfor our sin. By His resurrection we areraised to a new life in· Him, and Hisresurrection is to us a proof of ourown bodily resurrection yet to come."By the obedience of one shall manybe made righteous." "By the righteousness of one the free gift cameupon all men' unto justification oflife." "As in Adam all die, even soin Christ shall all be made alive.", Those who are still in Adam
the unregenerate and unsaved-intimes of adversity ask disparagingly,"Thanksgiving for what?" Those whoare in Christ answer that question ina hopeful, joyful spirit by saying,"Thanks be unto God which givethus the victory through our Lord JesusChrist."
It is well to observe that this spiritual victory over eternal death andhell which Christ gives to His peoplehas temporal results also. Indeed, Godgives His children both physical andtemporal benefits through 'Christ."But my God shall supply all yOUTneed according to his riches in gloryby Christ Jesus." The Psalmist Davidsaid, "I have been young, and nowam old; yet have I not seen therighteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread." This passage teaches usthat the righteous receive temporalas well as spiritual blessings from God.
When a nation achieves a victory,it not only vanquishes its foes, preserves its own life, keeps alive itsprinciples and ideals, but usually enjoys material prosperity as well. Inlike manner, when God gives Hischildren victory over the enemy ofsouls, the forgiveness of sin, and thepromise of eternal life, He also showersgood gifts upon them during theirearthly life to remind them that "Hismercies aye endure, ever faithful,ever sure."
It is true that God sustains andoften even prospers the ungodly. YetHe does not see them nor love themin Christ. Their condemnation willalso be much greater because, havingexperienced the gifts of God, they donot hear His voice, repent, and turnto Him. But God gives His ownpeople both temporal and spiritualgifts for the sake of Christ. Theirwhole being, both body and soul,belongs to Christ. Therefore, the needsof both are met by Christ.

THE President of the UnitedStates, in a message to the Con
gress, formally demanded the enactment of a bill to provide peacetimeconscription for American. youths.The following day, the United Nations Organization became a legalreality, two hours after the ratification of the Charter by the Union ofSocialist Soviet Republics. The morality of maintaining a large standingarmy and navy in the face of ourleadership in the promotion of theUnited Nations Organization is questionable indeed. This moral questiondeserves careful scrutiny by that sector of the press, both secular and religious, that stands for Christianmorality in government.
It is not the morality of a largepeacetime force which is challengedin this present article, but the principle of peacetime conscription itself.Much has been written concerningthe practical effects of conscriptionon young men. It has been pointedout that it would be deleterious totheir education; that it would subject them to unnecessary temptations;that it would interrupt their normalreligious and industrial life. For these,and for other good reasons, churchleaders, educators and labor leadershave declared themselves against theplan.
The reasonsusuallyproposedagainstconscription are not, however, in my
. opinion, the best ones. There areprincipial objections to the plan whichseem to be greatly superior to thepractical objections which have beenoffered. Assuming, for the sake ofargument, that a large military forcecan morally be maintained in consistency with our obligations as. amember of the United Nations Organization, are there not still moralobjections to peacetime conscription?I believe there are at least three whichmust be offered.
1. Peacetime conscription is inviolation of a clear constitutionalright. The Thirteenth Amendment tothe Constitution of the United Statesprovides: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment
for crime, whereof the party shall havebeen convicted, shall exist within theUnited States, or. any place subjectto their jurisdiction." Now, to besure, this Amendment is just as applicable to wartime as to peacetimeconscription. Yet it is recognized byall that many rights must be surrendered in time of great emergency.During the Civil War, PresidentLincoln suspended even habeas corpus, and the courts upheld the suspension. At the time of an accident,any citizen's automobile may be commandeered (probably in violation ofthe Fifth Amendment to the Constitution) to take a victim to the hospital. In time of war, all kinds of constitutional rights must be suspendedand the War Powers Act which is stillin force takes account of these. Yet,when the emergency is over, citizenshave a duty to insist upon their constitutional rights. The definition of"emergency" is indeed a flexible one,but certainly an emergency is not acondition that continues indefinitely.Certain national leaders- have talkedabout "emergency" as if it were possible to live in an "emergency" forever.While an accurate definition suitableto our troubled times may be difficultto formulate, let .us not complacentlysit by while our constitutionalrights are taken awayon plea of "emergency"-which means only "troubledtimes." It is one thing to surrenderone's car to a policeman to take aperson to the hospital; it is quiteanother thing to surrender the car to
. the policeman so that he can sit at abusy intersection waiting until an accident may happen. In the former case,there is an "emergency"; in the lattercase, the government has an obligation to provide, by purely constitutional means, the' transportation thatthe policeman may need. It is onething to submit to conscription duringa war and even during a very limitedperiod of adjustment after a war; it isquite another thing to submit to thisviolation of constitutional right intime of peace when the governmenthas an obligation to make constitutional provisions for the most lasting
peace and safety of the state.2. Peacetime conscription is a viola
tion of the principle that the trainingof youth is the prerogative not of thestate nor of the church but of thefamily. Children "belong" not to thestate but to the parents. It is theparents' moral duty to train theirchildren so that they will be physicallyand morally upright citizens, able tolive righteously in this present age.However, it is the civic right of parents to bring up their children to beartists or musicians, or in any profession that does not violate the lawor in no profession at all. It is thecivic right of parents to train theirchildren to abhor all military service.The author is not a pacifist by anymeans, but he recognizes the civicright of people to be pacifists. Perhapsa parent does not want his eighteenyear-old son trained in the arts ofwar. Shall the government then judge,in effect, that he is unfit to train hisson, and take the son from him?
3. Peacetime conscription is a violation of the principle that the stateexists for the individual, not the individual for the state. The core offascism which we have just "abolishedfrom the earth" is that the individualexists for the state. And the core ofpeacetime conscription is the verysame! The republican form of government is government by representativeswho are elected by the majority andwho governfor the benefit of all. TheUnited States became great throughits respecting the rights of the mosthumble citizen. Peacetime conscription will go far toward abolishingthese rights. A minority of young men(or perhaps a majority) may decidethat they don't want to be soldiers.But they will be told that they arepart of a whole organization and thattheir rights must be subservient to theneeds of the state. They won't be toldthis honestly, but many of them willbe cajoled into thinking that it istheir patriotic duty to give up theirfreedom. The State; spelled with acapital S, thus becomes the unit,whereas the unit in our republic is theindividual. And it makes all the dif-

1"1ie- plea. is made that militarytraining is "good" for young -men. Inour form of government none has theright to determine what is "good"for any individual in regard to hishealth. I believe with all my heart thatit would be "good" for every individual to attend an Orthodox Presbyterian church every Sabbath. I hopethe day may come, if Christ's returnis delayed, when a host of the peopleof this country come to the same conclusion. But at that time I should oppose most vigorously any atte~pt .ofthe majority to compel the minorityto do what is "good" for it. That ishow tyrannies always arise: the majority thinks it can legislate what is"good" for the minority!
But, you say, assuming that a largeanned force is necessary, how is it tobe raised except by conscription? Theanswer is very simple. Let those whoask this question also be asked whetherthey believe that the foreign policyof the United States is so unpopularthat it needs a slave army to implement it. If an industry suddenly needsfive thousand men, what does it do?It makes conditions of employmentso attractive that the five thousandmen come to work. Given the publicity and the financial backing thatthe United States government cancommand, it can employ as many menfor the peacetime army as it needs.Let it simply make conditions of employment attractive. Military expertssay that officer material is the firstessential to the quick building of awartime army. Let the .govemmentset up officers' training schools with acourse of from one to two years; letthe government carefully chooseamong the volunteers, for if it makesconditions sufficiently good it canget all the volunteers it needs. If,for instance, graduates of a comparatively short course in officers'training were given reserve commissions and an opportunity to secure afree education in the college of theirchoice, an ample number of youngmen would jump at the proposition.Other benefits could be provided forgraduates of a school for non-commissioned personnel. That is the Americanwayof doing things and, in America,it is the right way.

ADlerica's Reasonsfor Thanksgiving
THANKSGIVING seems to mostof us to be a peculiarly American
holiday. It is. But if we investigate alittle, we shall find that the Christiansin most countries have a day whenthey particularly give thanks for theblessings of the autumn harvests. Inline WIth these harvest festivals, wehave often confined our thoughts onThanksgiving Day to thankfulness formaterial blessings. Particularly in theUnited States have we a great dealfor which to be thankful in this department of things, and we do wellto express our gratitude. A goldenbrown roast turkey, with his interiorwell stuffed, will grace many an American table. There will be roast potatoes and big boiled onions and candiedturnips and much more of the like.And when we have done our best withthese good things, there will be a welltanned pumpkin pie, or perhaps oneof mince meat, ready to settle comfortably into the last chink of Our interiors. We do well, we repeat, to bethankful for these things.
There is something else, however,for which it is even more importantthat America be thankful. That is thespiritual and moral tradition of America. History reminds us that there areperiods of spiritual advance and othersof spiritual decline in the world andin our country. There are periodswhen, to all appearances, the proportion of Christians in the population iscomparatively high. There are othertimes when it is comparatively low.The period just after the American
Revolution was one of the low timesand we are in another today. Trueenough, the statistics of Christianchurch membership do not show it.But the sermons in the pulpit showit, the religious press shows it, thegeneral assemblies of the churchesshow it, the juvenile delinquency statistics show it, and the political andinternational ideals of the nation showit. Should we not face the fact thatChristianity is less powerful in American life today than it was eventwenty-seven years ago, at the close ofthe First World War?
In the face of this fact, there arctwo things to be said. First, a comparison with the tradition of manyanother country in this world showsus that we still have a great deal inthe way of Christian tradition forwhich to be thankful. True, Americais a long way from having a monopolyon virtue. There are many things inwhich we are outclassed. But it is notyet customary for masses of our population to get their exhilaration fromdope, girls of twelve are not lookedupon as objects of sexual commerce,political parties do not lend theirformal support to the belief thatChristianity is the opiate of thepeople, our major sports are not notable for an element of cruelty, thereare vestiges of integrity in our professional traditions.
If, then, we are thankful, too, forthese things that God has given usthe tradition of Christian standards,honesty, freedom of conviction, asense of compassion, kindliness andsympathy-let us remember, in thesecond place, the axiom that ethicalstandards persist only one generationbeyond belief in the doctrine that gavethem birth. Unless we continlie vigorously to preach the gospel, we cannotmaintain these standards. And unlesswe apply the gospel to the fieldswhere our fathers failed, we shall fallunder the justified condemnation ofinsincerity. What are we doing abouteconomic justice and a fair division ofthe fruits of industry? What are wedoing to check dishonesty in civil government? What are we doing to breakdown the caste system of the colorline in this country? Thankfulness isinconsistent with laziness. When werise from our thanksgiving holiday,let us rise to greater effort to makethe gospel really known in its fullnessand, then, to make it really effectivein its application.

. third year. The editor-in-chief, LutherCraig Long, and his associates are tobe commended for their vision andcourage in undertaking this publication and for the considerable successwhich has been achieved.
Christian Opinion is the organ ofthe Inter-Collegiate Gospel Fellowship which has been incorporated inNew York as an organization of Christian students and graduates who areconcerned to face modern educationalproblems on a distinctly Christianbasis. Among its specific aims are (1)the analysis, on the basis of the historic Christian faith as expressed inthe Reformed standards, of educational materials used in lower andhigher institutions of learning, and(2) the publication and distributionof literature relating to the religiousand spiritual aspects of education andstudent life. These goals are beingrealized, partially at least, through themagazine.
The field of education presents anurgent challenge today. And the Christian may seek to meet this challengewith a measure of hope that he willget a hearing, for the world of education is in considerable ferment. Therepresentatives of the prevailing antichristian educational philosophy areon the defensive. It has become moreor less respectable to insist upon aChristian approach to education.Whether the spokesmen for thenewer points of view have arrived at atruly Christian starting-point is another mattervBut in any case the opportunity presents itself of diagnosingeducation today and of prescribing aChristian cure for its ills. The Christian "doctor" is not as likely to berefused admission to the bedside as hewas a short time ago. This challengemust be met by Christians who seethe need and possess the ability andcourage to make the right response interms of thought and action. ChristianOpinion constitutes a : definite stepforward.

Are we going to permit that Council to secure such actionfrom other governments as will giveit a stranglehold upon the missionaryenterprise? If we are not active inprotes ting to Washington againstmoves in this direction, those are theprobable results. Our eyes must beopen to protest every step towardsthese ends.

Wldther Missions?
WE ARE on the brink of large. scale missionary movements out
ward from this country toward landswhich have been closed to missionaryeffort, or largely so, by the war. Especially is this true of far eastern fields.Two questions arise: (1) What arethese missionaries, who are returning,going to teach and preach? (2) Whatwill they be allowed by the civil authorities to teach and preach?
Many of the men and women whogo out from this country's shores in
.the next few years will go to teach andpreach unity and brotherhood-nothing more. But the gospel-the' goodnews-begins with something else. Itbegins with the fact of sin. Unlessmen preach the universal curse of sin,unity will never come to pass. Thegospel goes on to proclaim salvationby pure grace through the blood of thecross of Christ. Unless men preachsalvation by the substitutionary deathof Christ, there will be no brotherhood. For real brotherhood can existonly among the children of God. Andonly those who know the cleansingpower of the blood of Chnst are children of God in the Biblical sense ofthe words.

T HE Christian Answer is the fruitof corporate writing on the part of
five members of The Theological Discussion Group which has met twice ayear for the last decade, "to considerissues of common concern in theinterpretation of Christian faith forour day" (p. vii).
The first chapter contains an analysis of the world situation today byPaul Tillich. Tillich divides modernhistory into three phases. There wasfirst the period of bourgeois revolutions. This period was marked by"belief in reason," that is, revolutionary reason (p. 2). "It was the beliefthat the liberation of reason in everyperson would lead to the realizationof a universal humanity and to a system of harmony between individualsand society" (p. 3). The second phaseof modern history was that of the"victorious bourgeoisie." This periodwas marked by the control of "technical reason." "The decisive feature" ofthis period was "the loss of controlby human reason over man's historicalexistence" (p. 5)' Today we are in thethird phase of modern history. Thefoundations of bourgeois society havenow been destroyed. The release ofreason from authority has not pro-
duced the expected harmony betweenindividual and general interests (p. 6).Planned reason is now employed tocontrol the Frankenstein monster produced by technical reason. But whilecontrolling this monster, planned reason also irritates it into destructiveaction (p. 7)' Giving up hope forrational harmony, men allow suchforces as "passion," "libido" andothers to have free play (p. 12). Theysurrender themselves, with fanaticism,"to irrational and unconditioned purposes" (ibid.). All objectivitydisappears. In art men tum to surrealism(p. 30), in philosophy to existentialtruth. "Thus, in the third period ofmodern society, technical reason isemployed to execute the commands ofan existential decision above whichthere is no rational' criterion" (pp.pI.) .
I t would seem that, after paintingsuch a dark picture, Tillich might beready to listen to the voice. of a trulytranscendent God. Not so, however.
, He gives fair warning, as it were, tohis collaborators who are to formulatethe answer to the hopeless situationhe has portrayed that they must by nomeans turn to anything higher thanthat which reason, which is a lawunto itself, can produce. row fundamentalists" are not expected to apply fer membership inthis new church. Such as believe in areally transcendent God and in historic Christianity are throughout portrayed as the only really hopelesspeople in the world. They have darkened counsel by dogmatism and literalism. They 'have refused to trim theirGod and their Christ to the patternshown them by autonomous reason.Yet if anything is also plain from TheChristian Answer, it is that its answeris no answer. It offers no God and noChrist in terms of which an answermight be given to the problem presented. Tillich insists that the leprosyof the human race is incurable; theother writers have portrayed a Christwho, in order to touch and heal theleper, must Himself be a leper. Andthis is not only the Christ of HenryP. Van Dusen, the editor of the volume, but also of John A. Mackay,president of Princeton Seminary, amember of the Discussion Groupwhich the volume represents (p. ix).
suppose that Jesus worked at the sametrade. He had several brothers andsisters. There is some reason to believe that His father Joseph died before He began His public ministry.as we never hear of Joseph after thatministry opened. Beyond these quitegeneral facts, however, we are givenbut one story concerning His life during the whole period.
Luke is the one who tells us of theincident, a trip Jesus made to Jerusalem when He was twelve years old.Every year Joseph and Mary went upto the feast of the Passover whichprobably occurred in March or April.Whether Jesus had made the trip before or not, we' do not know. Butwhen He arrived at the age whichmarked for the Jew the passing fromchildhood to youth, He was includedin the company. On these trips a number of friends and relatives wouldjourney together. In such a caravanit would be natural for the childrento gather in groups and wander fromfamily to family within the boundsof the company. And so when theywere starting on their return trip to

In Christ men have,as it were, a concrete manifestationof what they mean by God as theprinciple of Reason in the universe.He therefore binds men, all men, together in unity. Aubrey speaks of the"Christian principle of universalism"(p, 147)' All men are the children ofGod (p. 84)' "To believe in the Godof Christianity is to believe that allmen are indeed brothers" (p. 83).God forgives all men even while Herequires them to be perfect. He seemsto think that in this way He can getmen to do their best. Presumably inthis way He expects them to join theuniversal church which is said to bethe continuation of the incarnationof Christ.'

THE fact that Jesus was brought upin the village of Nazareth is de
clared by Matthew to be another ofthose fulfillments of Scripture whichhe finds so frequent in the life of ourLord. Matthew is perhaps referring to:rnaiah 11:1, where the promisedMessiah is termed "The Branch."The Hebrew word for branch is netzer,from which the name Nazareth isapparently derived.
An almost complete mystery coversthe thirty years Jesus spent in thisGalilean village. From a few generalor incidental statements, we learn certain things. As we would expect, Hegrew as any boy would grow, in Hisknowledge and physical stature. Hedoubtless had the regular· Jewishschooling, but apparently took no advanced work in the direction of special rabbinical training. His fatherwas a carpenter and it is natural to

cipal point is the elevation of reasonas the principle of truth above allforms of authoritarianism and obscurantism" (p. 44). Moreover Tillichasserts that "man is fully rational onlyon the foundation of, and in interdependence with, non-rational factors" (p. 11).
The Christian Answer must givefull sway to reason, and when it doesit will appear that "the achievementsof man, as though by a logic of tragedy, turn against man himself" (p.44)' And this must always be true.The only answer that is acceptable isan answer that itself automaticallyturns into a question mark.
The other authors of the book arenot slow to oblige. They are at painsnot to offend reason by the idea of'''asserted authority'" (p. 74)' "TheBible is not itself the revelation butthe record of the revelation" of Godto man (p. 98).
The real authority of Scripture isthat of "luminous and compelling insight" (p. 79)' The God presented bythis insight is, of course, to be calledtranscendent but He is transcendentonly in a Pickwickian sense. He iseternal only as the permanent factorin time. He is immutable only as theprinciple of continuity in the universe(p. 106). God's perfection is nothingthat He is in Himself apart from theworld, but consists in the "communication of His being and goodness tothat which is other than Himself"(p. 103). Hence, too, the idea of thecreation of the world and of man mustnot be taken as an historical event butas a "sublime and inspired philosophical myth" (p. 107; see also pp. 137,141). God comes to expression in the"rich diversity of the world." It is ofthe essence of the trinity to teach usthis. The true view of man is that he"occupies a middle position on thescale of being" (p, 1°9)' Thisamounts to saying that in his loweraspect he participates in the worldof those irrational forces of whichTillich spoke and in his spiritual aspect he participates in that aspect ofReality that men call God. Man cannot help being sinful inasmuch as heis man.
The Christ of The Christian Answer is also carefully patterned afterthe demands of the planned reasonof the modernist discussion group.His divine nature is, of course, identified with a dynamic principle in theuniverse (p. 116). There is some evi-

rNazareth, Joseph and Mary thoughtlittle of it that Jesus was not to beseen. Undoubtedly they assumed Hewas with some other boys with another family.
Jesus, however, was not in the company at all. Instead, in Jerusalem Hehad gone to one of the schoolroomsattached to the temple, and He wasstill there. His parents, finally deciding after a whole day's travel that Hewas not in the caravan, turned backagain to Jerusalem. At last on thethird day they discovered Him in thetemple school. What a scene it was!The twelve-year-old boy was sittingin the midst of a group of prominentOld Testament teachers, asking themquestions and in turn answering questions they asked of Him. Everyonepresent was astonished at the knowledge of the Bible which He showed.
The most interesting part of thewhole incident, however, is the briefconversation which Luke records ashaving taken place between Jesus andHis mother Mary. "Child," she said,"why hast thou treated us so? Thyfather and I have sought thee sorrowing." And the twelve-year-old Jesushad replied, "Why is it that ye soughtme? Did you not know I must beabout my Father's business?" Just that.Nothing more. Luke only adds thatJesus went down to Nazareth and wassubject to them.
Since, in the providence of God,this is the only incident from thesethirty years of our Lord's life whichhas been recorded for us, it is necessary that we examine it carefully todiscover the information which it reveals to us.
Jesus and GodThe first thing we notice is the
attitude of Jesus toward God. Wewould expect a twelve-year-old childon a visit to a large city to stay fairlyclose to His parents. But Jesus hascomplete confidence .in the care ofHis heavenly Father. He is apparentlynot worried at all that for three daysHe has not seen Mary and Joseph.But more even than that,He has adeep interest in religious things anda strong sense of duty toward God.He must be about the business ofserving God. And He recognizes thisobligation the more because He isaware of standing in a special relationship to God. When His mother saysto Him, "Thy father and I have soughtthee ... ," she means Joseph. But
when Jesus says in reply "My Father'sbusiness," He plainly means God.His earthly father may have lost Himfor a while, but His Heavenly Fathercertainly had not. Already He wasaware that in an utterly unique senseHe was God's Son. This convictionwas present in His human consciousness already at the age of twelve. Andwith it was the sense of urgency to beservingGod. He must be engaged evennow in His Father's business.
Jesus and the BibleApparently at this time of life Jesus
understood His Father's "business"to involve learning all He could aboutthe Bible. Later He declared that Hehad come to fulfill the "Law," meaning the Old Testament. Now He wasbusily learning that Law. His deeplyreligious parents, moved no doubt bytheir knowledge of His supernaturalbirth, had certainly sought to the bestof their ability to instruct Him in itscontents. In the village school theBible was the chief study. And now,given a chance to spend a little whilewith the best teachers Jerusalem couldoffer, Jesus makes the most of it.During His public ministry, Jesus'teaching was filled with references toand explanations of Scripture. NowHe was learning it well.
Jesus and HimselfAswe have indicated, Jesus not only
knew His Father in heaven, but Healso knew that He was God's ownSon. Though living as a human child,He knew what it was He must bedoing. And He knew He was doingwhat He ought to be doing. Hismother had in a sense reproachedHim. But He denied having wrongedher. In doing His Father's business,He was not wronging His human parents. Rather they should rejoice thalHe thus recognized His duty to God.Yet Jesus also recognized that Hewas a member of a human familyand, as a child, should be obedient toHis parents. He did not rebel againstthem but, as Luke tells us, wentdown and was subject to them. Childhood obedience was also, at this timeof life, God's will for Him. Yet evenso, we cannot but feel that it wasJesus who chose to be subject to them,and not they who enforced that subjection. Later Jesus declared that Hewas "Lord of the Sabbath." Evennow we have the feeling that He isconsciously "Lord" of His own life.
Although our information concerning His youth is thus extremelylimited, yet the knowledge and character He showed during His publicministry make it plain that He was acareful observer of nature in generaland of human nature. He grew up asa normal boy would grow, subject tothe experiences, temptations, joys andsadnesses of ordinary youth and earlymanhood. We have no indication thatthose about Him recognized that Hewas the Son of God, the Saviour ofmen. Yet that was the case. The Biblesays He "grew in wisdom and stature,and in favour with God and man."This describes the development ofHis human nature. But we must neverforget that it is the second Personof the blessed Trinity that we speakof, and that even during these yearsHe was as truly God as at any othertime.
The Shorter Catechism says that,having been conceived by the powerof the Holy Spirit and born of thevirgin Mary, He "was and continuethto be, God and Man in two distinctnatures and one Person forever."

In personally settingthis lofty example of worshipping thedivine Imperial ancestress of Japan,the Emperor of Manchoukuo is furnishing his people with a lasting faithwhich has stood the test of 26 centuries of Japan's progress and to whichhis ally owes its present world prestige.
Historically the young Empire ofManchoukuo has been indissolublylinked with Japan, not only by political ties but also by the espousal ofthe worship of the divine Imperialancestress of the Island Empire. Thedivine character of the Japanese Empire has been imparted also to Manchoukuo. The prosperity of both willhenceforth depend upon the grace ofthe Goddess of Universal Enlightenment.
The foundation of the new shrineis a natural, logical sequence to theproclamation of the moral and spiritual kinship of Japan and Manchoukuo by His Majesty following hisfirst visit to Nippon five years ago.The principle of "oneness in spirit andvirtue" as between the two allied nations has been applied in all itsthoroughness by His Majesty's presentaction. More so than ever before arethe two Empires identified by a commonalty of ideal and purpose.
Upon this momentous and historically significant occasion it is the dutyof the citizens of Manchoukuo topool their strength with the one object of assisting their Sovereign inpromoting the national weal, and tocollaborate more closely than ever

Thepresent article will reproduce in itsentirety an editorial in the Japaneseedited Manchuria Daily News whichshows with devastating frankness thatin Japanese eyes there could not becivil loyalty or patriotism in Manchuria apart from a recognition and acceptance of the religious character ofState Shinto. The reader should notehow this editorial cuts the groundaway from beneath the claim of manymissionaries and church leaders thatState Shinto was purely patriotic andnon-religious in character, and thatparticipation in Shinto rites was therefore not morally wrong. Following theeditorial, this series of articles will beconcluded by excerpts from an addressby Premier Chang of Manchukuo.

UNITY CONSUMMATED
July 15, 1940, will go down in thehistory. of Manchoukuo as the dateon which the spiritual unity of thisyoungEmpire and that of the ancientEmpire of Nippon founded by theEmperor Jimmu Tenno, the directdescendent of Amaterasu-omikami, theGoddess of Universal Enlightenment,was consummated. For on this daythe "Kenkoku Shinbyo," the StateFoundation Shrine, was established inthe compounds of the Imperial Palacein Hsinking, dedicated to the divineImperial ancestress of Japan at theinitiative of our wise and benevolentSovereign. Solemn rituals commencingat 2: 30 a.rn., and personally attendedby His Majesty, marked the dedication of this new shrine. This was followed at 11 a.m. by the issuance of aRescript by the Emperor to a gratefulnation, proclaiming the establishmentof the State Foundation Shrine.

AN EVENING Bible school whichmeets once a week has been or
ganized by Kirkwood Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Kirkwood, Pa.,and Faith Orthodox PresbyterianChurch of Quarryville. There arethirty-five students enrolled.
Two classes are taught each evening, one by each of the pastors ofthe two churches. A class in BibleDoctrine, based on the WestminsterConfession of Faith, is taught by theRev. John Patton Galbraith of Kirkwood and a class in Scripture Memorization is conducted by the Rev. Franklin S. Dyrness of Quarryville. Eachcourse will run for twelve weeks and,at the end of that time, a new courseof twelve weeks will be begun. It isplanned to have one course on doctrine each term until the Confessionof Faith'has been completed.
The conducting of the school ismade possible by the fact that thecooperating churches are only sixmiles apart. Classes are held in eachchurch on alternate weeks. Most ofthe students come from the two Orthodox Presbyterian churches,' butseveral from other churches are enrolled. A registration fee of two dollars is charged, and this includes allmaterials for the course.
Those. attending since the school'sinception early last month have beenenthusiastic in their response to theproject.
