THE EDIF I ER “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and the things wherewith one may edify another” (Rom. 14:19).
Walnut Street Church of Christ Volume 48 March 11, 2018 Number 10
INVOLVING YOU…Larry Snow
Tonight, following our evening worship service, our One Heart groups will be meeting in the homes of our members. Our groups are named from Acts 4:32, “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul;…”. Barnes commentary makes note of the reference to “one heart” as follows: “This expression denotes tender union. They felt alike, or were attached to the same things…”. Of all the things we could say about our relationship with fellow Christians a tender union may say it best. We are attached to the same thing…Jesus Christ.
So tonight those who choose the “tender union” of a One Heart group will enjoy the fellowship of smaller groups meeting in our homes fol lowing our evening worship. We expect to be facilitating the formation of One Heart groups throughout this year. If you are interested in being a part of a One Heart group please let me know (446.2909). The next meetings will be May 20.
Here are some suggestions that will support the success of your group:
• Meet, eat, fellowship, and prayer immediately following
our evening service. The environment of our homes provides a unique setting for sharing spiritual thoughts and praying specifically for the needs of the group. Do not miss this opportunity.
• Shoot for the entire gathering to complete in about an hour to hour and fifteen minutes. Parents of teens will need time to return to pick up their young people from the building. Others may have work or school the next morning so marathon meetings are best avoided. This will work well for everyone. You will find wisdom in leaning toward this format.
• Keep the food simple. In other words, “keep – the – food - simple.” (Don’t turn a blessing into a hardship.)
Prepare to be blessed. Please take pictures of your group and send them to me at [email protected].
FAMILY MATTERS…Steve Baggett
Rearing children can be one of the most rewarding experiences in
life! In fact, parents are truly blessed by the opportunity to love,
teach, nurture, train, mold, and enjoy their children. And, there is no
greater joy for a parent than to see their children become Christians,
grow in the faith, and serve the Lord. However, as many faithful
Christian parents have experienced, sometimes children reject the
teaching of their parents and turn away from God. This morning, our
lesson will deal with “Getting Rid of Guilt” which comes when our
children abandon the faith. When Solomon said, “Train up a child in
the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from
it” (Prov. 22:6), what did he mean? Without question he was saying
that children will have a much greater chance of choosing to remain
faithful if we bring them up in the Lord. But, since all people have
the right to “choose this day who you will serve” (Josh. 24:15), he
could not have been giving an iron-clad guarantee of a child’s
faithfulness based upon his parent’s teaching. Solomon was using
hyperbole, a common device in poetry, to prove the intrinsic value of
Christian parenting. Solomon himself rejected the training of his
father David (1 Kings 11:4). So, parents, love your children, and
train your children to love and serve the Lord. But, don’t be
burdened by the guilt of someone who abandons the faith, even if
that person if your own child! Grieve, yes! Pray, yes! Encourage,
yes! But, don’t allow Satan to burden you with unwarranted guilt!
