Aloha All, Every month all ASHRAE members receive the ASHRAE Journal which provides us with wonderful information on the latest technologies and projects in our industry. In March the ASHRAE Journal celebrated 35 years of the ASHRAE Technology Awards. This year’s winners included a vivarium, a training hospital, and police headquarters. Two of them are net zero and the third one exceeded ASHRAE 90.1-2007 by 40%. These certainly followed the theme of our technical seminar of energy efficiency. We are currently accepting projects for Technology Awards locally here in Hawaii. Contact Min Zhong if you have any. It would be wonderful promotion for your company. Upcoming Webcast: This time it is actually almost here. Take Control: Using Analytics to Drive Building Performance April 20, 2017 1:00 – 4:00 PM EDT https://www.ashrae.org/membership--conferences/webcasts This webcast will feature industry experts who will define the importance of, and why we should strive for, better building operations through improved controls and analytics. Viewers will be able to describe key elements of controls and analytics for building operations, and identify steps required to deploy analytics in building projects, including commissioning. This program will quantify how applying best practice controls improve building performance, and will recognize the value of analytics in building operations to achieve a reduced cost and increased performance. Last but not least, here is a quick bio of an influential engineer: Frederick Henry Kohloss: Born on December 4, 1922 in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Fred Kohloss was American engineer and the only Hawaii engineer to be president of ASHRAE. He was president in 1986-87. After getting his BSME from the University of Maryland in 1943, he served in the Army from 1943-1946. He came to Hawaii in 1955 after working various engineering positions and in 1961 started Frederick H. Kohloss & Associates, Inc., Consultant Engineers, which he partnered with an Australian Company Lincolne Scott in 1991. In 2003 he retired and moved to Arizona. New Single Story Government, Meteorological and Housing Building
The May 2017 technical program will feature the
students’ presentation from University of Hawaii at
Manoa (UHM). The presentation will be a review of the
design project that was submitted by the 2016 Fall
Semester students for their ME 417 Course requirements
in Applied Thermal Engineering. The students adapted
and modified the design provided by 2017 ASHRAE
Student Design Competition. The design team was
formed to enhance the design project and to make the
final presentation on May 11, 2017.
The purpose of the project was to design the HVAC&R
systems for a newly constructed Meteorological Station
on Islas Diego Ramirez, Chile. The Station will be a
single story government, meteorological and housing
building operating all year round. It will include the
mezzanine office and repair building in the Diego
Ramirez Islands. The design systems are intended to be
dependable and economically viable for at least 20 year
life span.
ASHRAE Standards 55, 62.1, and 90.1 as well as the
ASHRAE Handbook were used as the basis of design. A commercial software
program was used to calculate heating and cooling loads for the proposed building.
The students reviewed many systems and zeroed‐in to two systems. The systems
were compared using life cycle cost analysis, which included initial costs as well as
operation and maintenance costs. In addition to the life cycle costs, other
considerations included indoor air quality, energy conservation, energy performance
and system selection.
The process of analyzing the requirements, designing a system and selecting
equipment was instrumental in the student’s level of understanding of HVAC&R
systems. As the students were involved in the process, they learned not only about
designing a HVAC&R system but also in working as a team and the importance of
seeking out people with the knowledge to help with questions and difficulties.
In closing, Garrett Lau (UHM 2007 Class), Tony Rasabout (UHM 2008 Class), and,
Rudolph J. Ritter of Trane Pacific generously offered their time and knowledge to the
students. The students are grateful for their help and patience as they mentored and
gave guidance over the course of the semester.
Ryan Chun was born and raised in O’ahu and is expected to graduate in May 2017 with a
Mechanical Engineering degree. Watching nature and science
documentaries from a young age is what sparked his curiosity into how
things worked. Originally considering a degree in physics, he
was convinced by others that engineering was a valuable route. It
was then in mechanical engineering that he discovered
engineers are “applied scientists” and that many of the things he would
have learned in “physics” he was learning in class. Moving forward,
Ryan will graduate and join the workforce while keeping in mind his
values of the environment, personal balance and community.
Kent Harada was born and raised on O’ahu, Hawai’i and is expected to
graduate in May 2017 with double degrees: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering and in Chemistry. Following his interest in Acoustics, Kent
currently works as a part‐time technician for CENSEO AV+Acoustics in
Kailua. As a part‐time “Genius” at Apple in Kahala, he is pursuing his
passion of empowering everyone with technology. Kent graduated from
Kapi’olani Community College with an Associate of Science in Pre‐
Engineering and from Leeward Community College with an Associate of Arts in Natural
Science in the spring of 2015. In his free time, Kent plays video games and bass guitar.
Aloha, Po’okela Stillman Reyes was born on the island of Oahu, of Hawaiian,
Chinese, Filipino, German, and Norwegian descents, or better known as a
“mixed plate.” He grew up on the East side of the island, a.k.a. Kuliouou
Valley, right before Hawaii Kai; attended Aina Haina Elementary School,
Holy Trinity and then Kaiser High School. At Kaiser, he was fortunate to
learn many lessons throughout by getting involved with JROTC (Junior
Reserve Officer Training Corps), and by playing a few sports along the way like football &
wrestling. Graduating in 2011, his college career kicked off at Kapiolani Community College.
Being part of a summer STEM program, he engaged with an engineering project & exposed to
many of the different intricacies & facets of engineering. After the program, his decision to
become an engineer was fully cemented. He decided to follow his father’s footsteps in
becoming a civil engineer and pursued interests in building construction & design. However,
his interests shifted toward aerospace and robotics, which led to the obvious choice of
mechanical engineering. Over his college career, he was fortunate to have met many lifelong
friends, and professors who have helped to guide and mentor him.
Currently, he is interning at Dorvin D. Leis, a mechanical contracting firm. Working in the
Design‐Build Division, he is fortunate to have been given this opportunity to learn about
mechanical HVAC&R design and its applications. Graduating this semester in May 2017, he is
hoping to continue his career in the HVAC&R industry, where he can practive what he has
learned at UHM & further extend his knowledge in this industry.
