All of the connectors that we manufacture have machine turned round pins in the male half and the uniqueHypertac® socket in the female half. The socket has a number of spring wires, the position of which isdefined by a wire carrier which is itself fitted into an outer sleeve or shank that carries the termination of thesocket.

The spring wires within the socket are set at a small angle to the centre line and are deflected when the pinenters. Each spring wire is deflected within its elastic limit and makes a line contact with the pin.

There is a very smooth wiping action and little wear of the plated surfaces of the pin and the socket wires.

This construction allows very tight control of the spring forces and hence of the insertion and withdrawalforces.

The smallest practical pin diameter is 0.5mm but there is effectively no upper limit.

Performance features of this combination of round pin in aHypertac® socket are:

w Low insertion and separation forces

w Multiple contact areas

w Long life and low rate of wear

w Low electrical resistance

w High reliability

w Uniform electrical and mechanical characteristics over a highnumber of operations

w Shock and vibration proof

w High current and voltage ratings

ENDURANCEThe Hypertac® contact is capable of significantly enhanced performance, above and beyond therequirements of BS and MIL approval. Tests have been successfully concluded as follows:

w 500 Insertion and withdrawals followed by 1000 hours at 125°C, multiple exposure to salt mist, or 21days exposure to sulphur dioxide.

w 20,000 full insertion and withdrawal cycles in a benign environment.

w Over 10 million fretting cycles of approximately 1 mm movement.

w The Hypertac® contact has been monitored for circuit interrupt of greater than 2 Nano-seconds andhas sucessfully passed all tests.

TEMPERATUREThe very low contact resistance of the Hypertac® socket ensures the minimum temperature rise at highcurrents.

Peak temperature of insulator material is the primary limiting factor. Materials used in Hypertac®connectors are chosen to:

w Provide Widest Ambient Temperature range

w Withstand Temperature Peaks during assembly, even those generated during Vapour Phase soldering.

VOLTAGE RATINGThe exposed airgap and surface path length determine the breakdown voltage. The voltage rating can beimproved by the use of additional dielectric material such as:

w Fluorosilicone interfacial seals.

w Potting or conformal coating.

C U R R E N T R A T I N GR A T I N GThe Hypertac® contact design and manufacturing tolerances endows the product with the followingattributes:

Double the current rating of other contact designs of a similar size.

Current surges considerably in excess of d.c. rating e.g. 0.6mm dia 4 Amp rated contact will withstand50 Amp, 5 second pulse, at 25°C

Low contact resistance in high current application minimises temperature rise thereby enabling higherdensity interconnects.

We will be pleased to advise on your application and installation requirements. Hypertac® contacts canprovide the solution to your interconnection needs.

CONTACT PLATING F I N I S H E SF I N I S H E S

* PLATING THICKNESS

These values apply to mating surfaces.

The gold plating finishes published here are the standard finishes offered by Hypertac. Ifthe customer has a particular application which may require a non-standard gold finish, then this can be applied to a suitable specification.

The Hypertac® sockets have a very low wear rate and in the interest of maintaining lowprices we will always select or recommend a minimum thickness of plating for thedesired application of the customer. The construction of the Hypertac® socket enablesa high degree of selective plating to be achieved - only the contact wire need carry themating surface plating.

FRONT RELEASE/REAR REMOVABLE CONTACTS

CONTACT INSERTION

1 Assembly Tool Tweezer - Non Ferrous.

2 Pick up contact with tweezer, align flats on contact withflats in insulator.

3 Insert contact into insulator insuring flats are correctlyaligned.

4 Push contact fully into insulator and insure that contactshoulder is 0.15mm minimum below insulator face. This will insure the contact retention clips ears springout and engage behind the shoulder inside the contactcavity. A gentle pull - not exceeding 18N (4.0lb) willcheck for correct installation.

CONTACT REMOVAL

1 Extraction Tool HPD-286 0.6mm male and femalecontacts and 1mm male contact.HD240 1 mm female contact.

2 Holding main body of extraction tool, aligncontact cavity on mating face of insulator.

above

3 Insert tubular tip fully, insuring that tool remains in linewith the contact cavity. To avoid damage, do not rotateor exert sideways movement. This will retract contactretention clip ears from engagement with the shoulderin the contact cavity.

4 With the tool held fully inserted, depress handle. Thiswill eject the contact out of the rear of the insulator.
