Introduction

In HD1 course, we have an interesting assigment. It is an project of “Developing, using

and analyzing the results of interviews to determine the feelings of foreign tourists on

their visit to Vietnam”. The tasks requires each pair of students to interview at least 12

tourists from different group (6 tourists for individual task), then write a report to find

out how foreign tourists feel when they come to Vietnam, find out what kind of

accommodation they like to stay in the most, which kind of food they like the best in

Vietnam etc. To carry out the duty, the two of us have to design a questionnaire

including about 25 questions, divided into 10 parts, to find out tourists information,

afterward each part must be presented in graphic forms (tables/charts) that followed byan appropriate description. In general, the assignment consits of many new duties that

we have nerver tried before. The purpose of this project is to encourage we students to

meet and talk with foreigners, to obtain information by designing and asking questions,

and to analyze their results in a short report. This report is written for the English

teachers in HD1 course, falcuty of tourism, Hanoi Open University.

Two member in our group is Ms. Le Thuy Linh and me, Pham Tra My. We decided to

share the work equally because the duty was quite heavy yet we all wanted to

participate in this new experience. Thus, we both went to Hoan Kiem Lake, Nha Tho

street and some hotels nearby to do the interview. We interviewed 12 tourists together,

then each of us were in charge of analyzing 6 questionnaires and designed 6

tables/charts, the last thing was to complete the writing and the charts together.



2. Interviews

The first place that Ms. Linh and me chose to came to at the very beginging was Hoan

Kiem Lake. This was obviously the perfect place with many foreigners were walking

around and enjoying a gorgeous sunset, people like these must be very comfortable,

open and not hurried. But seemed like things were not as we thought.

The first person we approached was a handsome young man and he was reading

something.(but not concentrated). So we came nearly and smiled and started: “Hello!

Can you help us? We are college students and we have a project…” As I haven’t

finished the sentence yet, he refused with a shake of the head: “Nah…Sorry”. What an

unexpected situation and both of us felt really awkward. We then say “Oh, it’s ok, thank

you anyway” and leave.

After a few minutes we approached a middle-age man who looked confusing with a

street map on his hands. We had the idea that if we could hepl this man maybe he would

help us back. So we came to offer some help. He didn’t know how to go to Nha Tho

Street so we showd him the way. As soon as he smiled and said thanks, I immediately

ask him that whether he could spare some time to answer my survey. He looked at our

questionaire for some seconds and said: “I came to Hanoi last night and this is my first

morning here so…I don’t have much to help you! Sorry girls!”

Linh and me were very upset because of the two failed missions. We started thinking

that maybe foreigners were not as friendly as we thought, and it made us even more

hesitative and hopeless. But, it was geeting dark and we still have a duty to finish so we

had to keep moving on. We were at Nha Tho Street – the street that many teenagersgather for “lemon ice tea vendor” and also had a lot of foreigners went to the church.

We saw a lady walking with a kid and both of them looked very happy, so we

approached them. And this American lady (with her cute 5-year-old son) was the first

person we interviewed successfully. Thanks to her, the two of us have more confidence

and energy to keep up. We interviewed and took picture with 8 tourists on that day. The

more we did it, the more we learnt from experience to have a better interview. We learnt

that if we started with questions like: Can you have me? Can you spare me some



time?... mostly the answers were “No. I’m sorry”. Because the foreigners may think we

were trying to do something that took long time, trying to sell them something or worse,

maybe cheating them. So they were very hersitative. But if we started by showing them

our clear purpose by quickly said: “Hello. We are college students and we have to do a

survey for foreigners. Could you please help us? Cus it’s very quick and short! Only 3-5

minutes” then they would agree. Never forgot to always smile, even if they refused to

do. And since we promised them that we only bother them for 5 minutes, we had to

keep that promise. So we needed to find a way that made the interview quick yet

effective. We realized that if we askd them the questions then ticked by ourselves, it

took very long time and the tourists might lose patience. If we let them tick the answers

by themselves, they would be focus and we couldn’t communicate much. The solution

is: One person asked them questions, one person ticked, and while doing that we could

ask them more questions if we wanted. And we took turn to do this. Day one ended

successfully with 8 tourists and we had so much fun and experience.

That is why our second day was much more easier and quicker. We interviewed and

took pictures with other 4 tourists within a morning. The foreigners were always open

hearted, kind and friendly. They were just beware of people approach them for unclear

purpose (some told us they only acted like this while in Vietnam, which was a very sad

thing to know). At the end of the day, with the photos of 12 tourists in my camera, Linh

and me felt so happy because we finally finished the first duty. It was so fun to

interview foreigners. We learn a lot more about communication skill and about Vietnam

tourism.
