Euro Care, KC Gurukul Public School Paloura, Shemrock Tulip Bakshi Nagar, Kids of Tender Toes and KC Playway School participated in the competition. Dr Renu Manhas and Sunira Khullar were the judges of the competition. KC Gurukul Public School Paloura Jammu claimed the winner's trophy in Patriotic Group Song Competition, while in Poetry Recitation, Uttkarsh Langer of KC Playway School bagged the first prize, Saksham Magotra of Shemrock Tulips stood 2nd and Parthvi of Euro Care School won 3rd place. Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 22: Department of Horticulture, Jammu, organized one-day mega farmers camp at village Handwal in block Bhalwal, here today. The camp was attended by a number of local farmers along with Sarpanchs and Panchs of adjoining areas. Chief Horticulture Officer Jammu, S Kirtan Singh Raina along with DLMS Sarabjeet Singh, Sanjeev Kumar and HOO Bhalwal Sandeep Sharma, Director RSETI (SBI) Bank and Sandeep Sandy participated in this camp and informed the farmers about aims and objectives of the pro- gramme. The Chief Horticulture Officer informed about current schemes being implemented by the department. He also assured all possible support to the farm- ers. The farmers made a strong demand for plantation of Harad plants on large scale in the area as this plant has got immense medicinal commercial value. During the camp, various Horticulture related problems were discussed in detail and DLSMSs answered the queries put forth by the farmers. Nine injured in separate road accidents Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 22: Nine people were injured today in separate road mishaps in the city and its outskirts. According to a police spokesperson, four people were injured this afternoon when a Mahindra vehicle bearing regis- tration No JK02AU-3195 col- lided with a Xylo car bearing registration No JK13B-8700 near Nandini. The injured have been identified as driver of Mahindra vehicle, Raj Kumar (30) son of Shiv Ram, a resi- dent of Dansal, driver of Xylo car, Bhupinder Singh (32) son of Karan Singh, a resident of Tral (Srinagar) and two passen- gers of Mahindra vehicle name- ly Satyender (48) and Ghar Singh (28). Two youths were injured here in Kacchi Chawani area when the bike they were going on, was hit by a mini-bus. The injured have been identified as Varun (20) son of Rakesh Slathia and Susheel (20) son of Ravi, both residents of Panjtirthi. In another mishap, two bike-borne youth were injured when their two-wheeler got slipped here in Bakshi Nagar area. The injured have been identified as Ashu (26) son of Mahraj Kishan Butt and Vikas (30) son of Susheel Choudhary, both residents of Muthi. A pedestrian identified as Dheeraj Singh (72) son of Balwant Singh, a resident of Nanak Nagar, Jammu, also got injured, when an unknown car hit him while crossing a road near Marble Market, Trikuta Nagar. A 30-year-old youth identi- fied as Joginder Kumar (30) son of Girdhari Lal, a resident of Batehra, also suffered injuries when the bike he was riding on, got slipped at Patoli area of city outskirts. All the injured were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu for treatment. In all cases, the concerned police have taken cognizance. Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Aug 22: The Directorate of Health Services Kashmir successfully hosted the 5th annual conference of Jammu and Kashmir State Chapter of Association of Surgeons of India. The confer- ence was held under the patronage of Director Health Dr Samir Matto. An official said here that the event started with a live operative workshop on August 19 at JLNM Hospital Rainawari by masters of the craft including Prof Muneer Khan, Prof RK Chrungoo, Prof Nisar Chowdri, Dr Anil Sharma, Dr Shiva K Misra, Dr Manish Baijal and Dr Arvind Kumar. Eminent Faculty of the State chaired various sessions of the operative workshop. The inaugural ceremony was held at Auditorium of Government Dental College. The Minister for Health, Medical Education, ARI and Trainings Lal Singh was the chief guest. Minister of State for Health and Social welfare Asiya Naqash and Secretary Association of Surgeons of India Dr Shiva K Misra were the guests of honour, he said. The chief guest in his lec- ture appreciated the efforts of the organizing secretaries and advised to isolate black sheep in the medical fraternity. HC directs deportation of Pak national Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Aug 22: High Court today dismissed the appeal of Government seeking maximum period of punishment to one Saqib Aziz Malik of Multan Pakistan and directed the authorities to deport him in accordance with law. Justice MH Attar directed the authorities to take immediate steps for deportation of the respondent (Malik) who is presently lodged in Hira Nagar jail in accordance with law. Court also granted liberty to Malik for seeking compensation from the authorities for keeping him behind the bars after spend- ing more time in jail against the Foreigners Act. Malik was arrested by Army personnel in the year 2006 while crossing the border and was put in the jail. The trial court on May 2012 held him guilty for commission of offence u/s 14 of Foreigners Act and accordingly convicted him. "The period of detention already undergone by the con- vict till date, shall be set off against the term of imprison- ment so imposed. The Government is further directed to take steps for regulating his presence after expiry of period of sentence in case by that time convict is not repatriated back to his native country on expiry of period of sentence", trial court had said in its judgment. Since Malik had already spent the punishment u/s 14 of Foreigners Act when the judg- ment of trial court came as such he was supposed to be deported to his native country as the trial court had also observed in its judgment. Counsel for the appellant submitted that maximum period of punishment provided u/s 14 of the Foreigners Act is 5 years. He also submitted that at the time the appeal was filed, the respondent has already complet- ed 5 years of imprisonment. He further submitted that the matter has been taken up with the Law Department and Home Department for taking steps fol- lowed by deportation of the respondent - a foreigner. He further submitted that this appeal be disposed of. The trial court had convicted and sentenced the respondent to undergo 4 years of imprison- ment for having committed offence u/s 14 of Foreigners Act. This appeal is filed for enhance- ment of the punishment. In the admitted fact situation of this case, the respondent has remained in custody of the appellant for more than 5 years. An Army doctor prescribing medicines to a patient during a medical camp at Chak Salariyan in Ramgarh sector of Samba district. Army organizes medical- cum-veterinary camp Excelsior Correspondent SAMBA, Aug 22: Army’s Rising Star Brigade organized a medical-cum-veterinary camp for the people dwelling in bor- der areas of Chak Salariyan in the Ramgarh Sector. This camp was organized on August 19 under Rising Star Corps. Brigadier Prem Jit Singh, Commander Rising Star Brigade inaugurated the camp and inter- acted with the village heads of Ramgarh Region. A team of one medical officer and two veteri- nary doctors from Army and the local heath administration was created to the need of hundreds of locals along with their live stock. The occasion also provided an opportunity to spread aware- ness amongst the locals about the importance of ongoing national level flagship cam- paigns viz Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojna and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. Rajesh Gupta kick starts developmental works Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Aug 22: MLA Jammu East, Rajesh Gupta toured Shalamar to kick start various developmental works. The residents and the shopkeep- ers of the Shalamar narrated their problems to the MLA Rajesh Gupta. The problems concerning the dilapidated con- dition of the lanes, drains foot paths and street lights was also brought before the MLA. On the spot instruction were issued to start the work. On the occasion the residents and the shopkeepers of the colony felicitated the MLA for all round development of the constituency. Brig K Venugopal, Commander of Shopian Garrison, flagged off the tour today in a simple ceremony at AGS Balapur. Col RS Bazad, Principal of AGS Balapur, par- ents of participant candidates and other dignitaries were pres- ent during the ceremony. Teenage girl commits suicide Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Police today said a teenage girl committed suicide in north Kashmir's Kupwara district. A police spokesman said that a 17 year-old committed suicide by consuming some poi- sonous substance at her home in Kalaroos area of the district. "She was shifted to District Hospital Kupwara for treatment where she breathed her last. Police have registered a case in this regard," the police spokesman added. Boy drowns in canal Excelsior Correspondent KATHUA, Aug 22: A seven year old child drowned in Kathua canal here this evening. The boy was identified as Bishen Choudhary, son of Kuldeep Choudhary of Ward 16. He had gone to take a bath along with other child in the Kathua canal this evening and later did not return home. After his family members went to search him and enquired from the boy who was accompanying him, they were informed that he drowned in the canal. His colleague said that he tried his best to save him but could not do due to strong cur- rent of water. The administration has stopped the water of the canal to search the boy tomorrow morn- ing. Kathua Police has registered a case in this regard.

The problemsconcerning the dilapidated con-dition of the lanes, drains footpaths and street lights was alsobrought before the MLA. On thespot instruction were issued tostart the work.

On the occasion the residentsand the shopkeepers of the

colony felicitated the MLA forall round development of theconstituency.

While speaking in the func-tion Rajesh Gupta said that eversince the BJP Government hascome to power it has made aqualitative difference in the livesof the people. On an everydaybasis new projects are beingtaken up for the welfare of thepeople of Jammu EastConstituency. Another aspect ofmy work is the speed of imple-mentation and the close moni-toring of the ongoing works andprojects.

HDFC Bank holdshealth check up camp

JAMMU, Aug 22: HDFCBank organized a free healthcheck up camp at Akhnoor.

The camp was inauguratedby MLA Akhnoor, RajeevSharma, accompanied by BlockDevelopment Officer (BDO)Akhnoor, Dr Punika Pandita inthe presence of Kunal Kak,Cluster Head, HDFC Bank Ltdand Anshu Gupta, AkhnoorBranch Manager.

A total of 450 patients ofAkhnoor town and nearby vil-lages availed the benefit of thecamp. The needy patients werealso distributed free of costmedicines.

Speaking on the occasion,Dr Punika Pandita also suggest-ed the bank to hold such campsat nearby locations.

Army organises educational tour for students

Teenage girl commits suicideExcelsior Correspondent

SRINAGAR, Aug 22:Police today said a teenage girlcommitted suicide in northKashmir's Kupwara district.

A police spokesman saidthat a 17 year-old committedsuicide by consuming some poi-sonous substance at her home inKalaroos area of the district.

"She was shifted to DistrictHospital Kupwara for treatmentwhere she breathed her last.Police have registered a case inthis regard," the policespokesman added.

Boy drowns in canalExcelsior Correspondent

KATHUA, Aug 22: A sevenyear old child drowned inKathua canal here this evening.

The boy was identified asBishen Choudhary, son ofKuldeep Choudhary of Ward16. He had gone to take a bathalong with other child in theKathua canal this evening andlater did not return home.

After his family memberswent to search him andenquired from the boy who wasaccompanying him, they wereinformed that he drowned in thecanal. His colleague said that hetried his best to save him butcould not do due to strong cur-rent of water.

The administration hasstopped the water of the canal tosearch the boy tomorrow morn-ing.

Kathua Police has registereda case in this regard.
