Individual Retirement AccountsTraditional IRAs have been around since 1974.3 Contributions youmake to a traditional IRA may be fully or partially deductible, de-pending on your individual circumstances. Distributions from atraditional IRA are taxed as ordinary income and, if taken beforeage 59½, may be subject to a 10% federal income-tax penalty.Generally, once you reach age 70½, you must begin taking re-quired minimum distributions.

Roth IRAs were created in 1997.4 Roth IRA contributions cannotbe made by taxpayers with high incomes. To qualify for the tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal of earnings, Roth IRA distribu-tions must meet a five-year holding requirement and occur afterage 59½. Tax-free and penalty-free withdrawal also can be takenunder certain other circumstances, such as a result of the owner’sdeath. The original Roth IRA owner is not required to take mini-mum annual withdrawals.

Defined-Contribution PlansWell over one-third of workers are eligible to participate in a de-fined–contribution plan such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457 plan.5 El-igible workers can set aside a portion of their pre-tax income intoan account, which then accumulates tax deferred.

Distributions from defined contribution plans are taxed as ordi-nary income and, if taken before age 59½, may be subject to a10% federal income-tax penalty. Generally, once you reach age70½, you must begin taking required minimum distributions.

Defined-Benefit PlansDefined–benefit plans are “traditional” pensions—employer–spon-

sored plans under which bene-fits, rather than contributions,are defined. Benefits are nor-mally based on factors such assalary history and duration ofemployment. The number of tra-ditional pension plans hasdropped dramatically during thepast 30 years. (See chart below.)

Continued EmploymentIn a recent survey, 79% ofworkers stated that theyplanned to keep working. Incontrast, only 27% of retireesreported that continued em-ployment was a major or minorsource of retirement income.6

Fall of the Traditional PensionParticipation in traditional pension plans has fallen dramaticallyduring the past 20 years. Participation in defined contributionplans, such as 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans, has risen steadilyover the same period. hockey programs, and are pleased to spread the word so youcan also get involved. "This program continues to expand eachyear. Annually over 700 youth participants experience hockeyfor the first time through this program," says Jesse Chatfield,Marketing Manager of The Rinks. "We found that one of themain hurdles to new participants trying hockey was the upfrontcosts associated with the gear. gram for both ice and roller hockey. A number of parents wanted to experi-ence the sport after watching their children have fun and progress. Themodel is the same and we have seen a number of adults continue on intothe Beginner Hockey Leagues."

There are four main categories of bladder control problems:• Stress incontinence – leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise. Another compelling argument for youth strength-trainingprograms is that significant improvements have beenseen in self-esteem, mental discipline and socialization.Weight training provides an opportunity to let childrenwho typically struggle with group activities stand out fromtheir classmates and perform well on an individual basis.Overweight and obese children tend to have great mus-cular strength and tend to excel in that area.

What a tremendous way to boost self-esteem in the chil-dren who need it most!

How do you get started? Listen very closely to yourchild’s concerns and address them with care. Kids loveto learn new things, so working with medicine balls, re-sistance bands, free weights and machines is a greatidea and can be lots of fun!

Finally, remember that your goals when exercising withchildren are simple: Safety, fun and learning to lovebeing physically fit!

As far as nutrition goes, relax parents. Once you getBobby & Suzy moving, the food thing will come. Whoshops? If the answer is you, the adult, then it’s up to youto offer your child better choices. If nutritionally un-sound food choices aren’t available, your child can’t eatit. If you kid yourself that you’re buying Coco

Puffs for Bobby or Suzy, but really it’s you that want thesugary cereal, then we have a different issue on ourhands altogether.

Instead of going crazy and cutting out all those treatsthat your child loves all at once, start out slowly. Littleconsistent changes will not be met with as much resist-ance. Make a family decision to improve on the typesand amount of food you’re buying and preparing.Healthy choices can be convenient too, you just have tomake the decision to improve yours and your families’nutrition and stay committed to that decision.

Bring the family back together. Family meals are a com-forting ritual for both parents and kids. Children like thepredictability of family meals and parents get a chanceto catch up with their kids.

Kids who take part in regular family meals are also morelikely to eat fruits, vegetables, and grains and less likelyto snack on unhealthy foods. In addition, family mealsoffer the chance to introduce kids to new foods and toact as a role model for healthy eating.

In closing, let’s educate ourselves on the pitfalls of mak-ing poor food and drink choices so the governmentdoesn’t have to ban them. Let’s make exercise excitingand fun again. Set a good example for your children bystarting with your own healthand fitness.

By now you may have heard that New York Mayor Bloomberg has tried to passa ban on sodas over 16 ounces. He says he has new data tying sugary drinks tothe city's fattest neighborhoods.

Instead, why don’t we educate the public on how to make better food and drinkchoices and develop programs to promote health and activities? The NFLlaunched NFL PLAY 60, a national youth health and fitness campaign focusedon increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active forat least 60 minutes a day.

In the United States today, childhood obesity is reaching epidemic proportions.Rather than reiterating the same statistics that you read in every article aboutthis topic, we’d like to address the ways in which we can affect change in thelives of our children and grandchildren before they are faced with the inevitablehealth issues that will likely result from poor nutritional and fitness habits.

If your child is already overweight and is inactive, the first step is to make the nec-essary changes to his or her diet. Then, it’s a matter of inspiring little Bobby orSuzy to get moving. With regard to the latter, I’d like to correct a common miscon-ception regarding strength training for kids. Many parents believe that childrenshould wait until the age of 12 to begin any strength training program because im-plementing a program at a younger age will stunt their child’s growth. The truthis that there is simply is no evidence to support this statement.

In fact, all of the major fitness and medical organizations in the U.S. recommendstrength training for youth, because basic guidelines are adhered to and appro-priate leadership is present. Children can begin to train with weights as soon asthey are able to accept and follow directions - typically around the age of 8 or 10.

The benefits of youth strength training are similar to those for adults, includingan improved attitude toward lifelong activity. Improvements in muscular fitness,bone mineral density, body composition, motor fitness performance and injuryresistance are compelling evidence for all parents. To keep your child motivated,present ideas that support their efforts like self-improvement and individualsuccess. But no matter what, make sure that your child is having fun!
