PRINCIPAL’S COMMENTS – ( Paul Jorgensen )
School Council met this week and among the discussions and decisions was the go ahead to
get the ball rolling on construction of the new playground was given and a basic plan has been
approved. This now however still means a wait of a minimum of six weeks and longer before
the actual playground is ready for use. In the coming weeks I will keep the school community
up to date as I get more information.
If parents happen to miss a permission note or it gets lost between school and home there is a
generic permission note on the school website that could be used providing you know the
details of the activity or event to fill in the details. This can be printed; details filled out and
returned to school.
A few parents have indicated that they have missed getting their newsletters. If this happens
can you please contact the office to let us know. This is the quickest and easiest way for us to
deal with things. If we don’t know we can’t act. Please contact the school should you have any
questions or to provide us with information. The newsletter is also placed on our website.
Unfortunately this part of the website recently had issues and I had to create a new newsletter
section. This means that many of the previous newsletters are no longer on there but the past
8 or so issues are again.
If you change an Email addresses could you also please advise the school so that we can make
adjustments to our information, this is the same for any changes to home addresses and
telephone numbers.
We have had a case of Thread Worm and Chicken Pox in the last week. Please be aware if
your child is feeling unwell.
Jungle Book Performance
Tickets for the school production are now on sale at the office. Tickets are $10 each.
Pre- schoolers may enter free of charge if they are seated on their parents knee.
Alternatively, parents with pre-schoolers are welcome to attend the Dress Rehearsals at
12.30pm. Pensioners are also invited to attend the Dress Rehearsal, entry is a gold coin
donation.
Thank you to those parents who have organised suitable clothing for their child’s costume. If
you are having any difficulty with organising your child’s costume, please speak to the
classroom teacher for that grade as soon as possible.
Students are spending lots of time rehearsing and there is a lot of excitement for the show.
Thank you to all parents for your offers to help with the production and special thanks to
those who have been making class sets of costume pieces they are looking fabulous.
The school has booked buses to take the children to Newborough for Rehearsals and return to
school. We aim to leave at around 9.30am and return to school by 2.30pm on the day of
performance. The cost of the buses will hopefully be covered through ticket sales.
We understand that approximately 17 senior students will be involved on Division Athletics on
the same day and we are currently working on arrangements to allow this to happen as
smoothly as possible.
We hope you all enjoy the children’s performance.

Ready Steady Cook: Check that recipe! Yahoo! This proud smile
is a good cook.

or butter and strawberry jam?
What have we been doing in Grade 34B?
Class 34B have had a focus for the week on managing distractions. Many students have
shown responsibility in moving away if something is distracting them so that they can focus
on the task at hand. On Wednesday we went on the VTEAM’s excursion where the class was
taught how to use Microsoft Publisher. It was a great afternoon with many new skills being
learnt.
Reading: During reading sessions this week we have looked at past tense, present tense and
future tense. We discussed how to know if a text is in the past or present and the changes
that happen to the verb.
Maths: The great cordial taste test was undertaken on Monday afternoon. The students were
given a ratio of cordial to water (eg – 1:3 – 1 part cordial to 3 parts water). Once they had
figured out how many mls of the 600ml bottle would be water and cordial based on their ratio,
and the percentage of the whole drink that would be cordial and water the students were able
to mix their drink for me to taste. The winning ratio of cordial to water is 1:4.
Writing: We have been writing movie reviews on James and the Giant Peach and a
comparison between the book and the movie. Most are in the edit and revise stage and will
soon be published in a Microsoft Word document.
Homework: Our weekly spelling words are tested every Monday morning after assembly.
Please assist your child in learning their words and listen to them read frequently.
Preview of Week 7:
Reading: We will be starting ‘Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” as our new class
novel.
Spelling: Dictionary skills.
Writing: Publishing.
Maths: We will be revising all four operations. Monday – addition, Tuesday – subtraction,
Wednesday – multiplication, Thursday – division.
Grade 5/6L
Writing
This week we completed our unit on Explanation Texts. Next week we will be delving into
different types of poetry and the different types of structures and language techniques that
Poets use.
Reading
In reading we are currently reading the book “Uglies” by Scott Westerfield. This week the
students will be creating an open minded portrait of the main character “Tally”. We are also
going to be looking beyond the texts we read and using inferences to make predictions about
what may happen.
Maths
This week we have been working on rations, with a particular focus on making the ‘perfect
cordial’. Next week we will be looking into division strategies and doing some revision for the
topics we have covered so far this term.
Homework
Due Friday. Students have a Maths Mate to complete, as well as spelling words to practice by
writing them in sentences. They are also required to complete a minimum of 100 minutes of
reading for the week :)
