During the first week each class prepared a bulletin board on a particular country, complete with information, pictures, and facts. Each class then received “passports”, in which they had to answer questions that were based on the various bulletin boards. On Monday each class had a presentation on the Philippines; Tuesday was “Talking Tagalog” day (where all kids learned some Tagalog words); Wednesday was storytelling/legend/craft day; and Thursday was food tasting day (with pineapple for morning snack and spring rolls for afternoon snack). On Friday we had our Culture Show that featured lots of entertainment! We were treated to three traditional Filipino dances. The first was the “Itik-Itik” (Duck) Dance that some of the mothers performed. Next was the traditional “Bulaklakan” (Flower) Dance performed by 6 of our students: Trisha Mae, Allison, Cheska, Alyza, Micaela, and Nicole. After these excellent performances, we were treated to the “Igorot Native Dance” by some of the Dads. During this dance the men each played a gong, and at the end they got most of the staff up dancing with them! Sheena and Alleah came in to help Rochelle and Adette with the stories, legends, and crafts. There were also several volunteers who helped out in other ways – making food (over 600 spring rolls were made by hand! – thanks also to HyLife Foods for donating the pork for these), preparing craft materials, donating items for the displays, performing at the Cultural Show, etc. Ms. McKinnon coordinated both weeks for the school and did a great job. Along with Ms. McKinnon, we want to thank Rochelle Unico and Adette Tripon for all of the work they put into our Filipino week! They took the lead in organizing, preparing, and delivering the entire week, which was a fantastic celebration of Filipino culture. Career TrekCareer TrekCareer TrekCareer Trek The Career Trek program wrapped up with the grad ceremony on April 6th. Career Trek is a program that was open to grade 6 students, which gave them the opportunity to explore many different careers over 12 Saturdays through the winter. We had 16 HMK students participate, and they went to either Brandon University or Assiniboine Community College each week to learn about a wide range of careers such as emergency services, agriculture, business, science, and a whole lot more! We would like to thank Career Trek for organizing the program, and also Beautiful Plains School Division for providing a bus to take the kids in every week! At the grad ceremony each of the students wore a cap and gown and received a diploma. There were a few HMK students who received special recognition at the grad ceremony: Aileen Tarun as “Most Creative”; Morgan Paramor as the “Eager Beaver”; and Wes Morton got the “Marketeer Award”. Congratulations to all of our students who participated!

Grade 5 Survival DayGrade 5 Survival DayGrade 5 Survival DayGrade 5 Survival Day On March 22nd, the grade fives travelled to the Fulford Trail for their annual Survival Day. Led by intrepid survivor, Mr. Parrott, the grade fives separated into camps around the forest to build shelters, make fires and cook their food.

Based on the work the students had done in the novel Winter Camp, they were well prepared to survive in the bush. A big thank you goes out to all of the parent supervisors who headed out into to the wilderness with the grade fives.

DARE GraduationDARE GraduationDARE GraduationDARE Graduation On April 11th our grade 5 students had their DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) graduation ceremony. Constable Fenning, who delivered the program to our grade 5’s over a two week period, was dressed in his red serge for the occasion and brought along four other RCMP officers for the event. Each student received a certificate and a T-shirt at the ceremony, which wrapped up with a group photo and some cake! We would like to thank the Spruce Plains RCMP detachment for allowing Constable Fenning to deliver the program as part of his regular shift. The grade 5’s also had a special surprise for Constable Fenning, as the grad happened to be on his birthday! The students had a special song that they sang for him, followed by “Happy Birthday”!

The presentation was given by Carrie Kolesar and ended with each student making themself a home-made stress ball.

HMK Choir Performs with HMK Choir Performs with HMK Choir Performs with HMK Choir Performs with Winnipeg Symphony OrchestraWinnipeg Symphony OrchestraWinnipeg Symphony OrchestraWinnipeg Symphony Orchestra "Adventures in Music" was the theme, and what an adventure our HMK Choir experienced! Choir Students in Grades 4-6 had the AMAZING opportunity to sing with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, April 18th at the WMCA in Brandon. A mass choir involving students from Brandon, Killarney, Boissevain and Neepawa

elementary schools sang for an audience filled with Westman area students, teachers and parents during the 2013 WSO's "Bach to the Future" concert. Every year the Symphony presents Education programs where they involve elementary students in performances. This year was a choral year and students prepared and performed pieces by BACH, BEETHOVEN, GRIEG and MENKEN. Special thanks to the Choir for their dedication and excellent enthusiasm in learning to sing "Ode to Joy" in German as well as for representing HMK so well. Also, a big thank you goes out to our chaperones Mrs. Reader, Mrs. Newsome, Mrs. Pedersen, Mrs. Hopkins and Mrs. Kwiatkowski. Middle Years Assembly at NACIMiddle Years Assembly at NACIMiddle Years Assembly at NACIMiddle Years Assembly at NACI On April 25th our grade 5 and 6 students headed over to NACI to join the grade 7’s for an anti-bullying presentation. The grade 5, 6 and 7 students were placed in mixed groups prior to the presentation, and then sat together with their group as they listened to Rachel Ashley as she talked about her experiences with bullying. After the presentation, Miss Parayeski answered questions that we had sent over from the grade 5 and 6 classes regarding coming over to NACI next year. Once the Q&A was done, the kids had a Gym Jam, in which the teams competed in various fun activities that the Junior High Student Council had set up. Everyone was then treated to hotdogs that the NACI HOPE group BBQ’d, chips, and drinks. Our students ate in the cafeteria at the big school for the first time, and then came back to HMK. All in all it was a great morning, with our kids not only getting some great information, but also being welcomed in such a warm way by students and staff at NACI – thank you!

Spring FlingSpring FlingSpring FlingSpring Fling Our annual Spring Fling took place on April 25th, with special guests “Brothers of the Road” providing the entertainment once again. We cannot express enough thanks to “Brothers of the Road” as they once again donated their services and provided excellent live music! There was a fantastic turnout as the gym was packed for most of the evening! We would like to thank the SSP class as well as Mrs. Pollock’s grade 6 class for decorating the gym with an “Airplane” theme. The decorations were coordinated by Mrs. von Halle who did an excellent job again this year! We would like to

thank all of those who came out to enjoy the Spring Fling, as well as the Parent Council for looking after the coat room, Ms. Kopytko and Mrs. McCharles for looking after the coffee and water tables, Mrs. Ernest and Mrs. Farquhar for looking after the raffle table, and the rest of the staff and parents for helping to make sure that kids had a safe yet fun time!

We would like to congratulate Linda Mitchler on winning the camcorder that was raffled off, and Kelly Reid on winning the digital camera. The winning tickets were sold by Devon Mitchler and Dylan Wood, each of whom received $20 for selling a winning ticket! All in all, this year’s Spring Fling was a huge success, with the kids dancing and

enjoying their time with friends and family! Once again, we would like to recognize “Brothers of the Road” - Bruce Rainka, Glenn Rainka, Lorne Nagorski, and Steven Rainka - for providing the entertainment at our annual dance – thank you so much!

COPA – Canadian Owners and Pilots Association – is a national organization with local “Flights” (groups). The COPA for Kids program aims to teach kids about aviation and flight, and also gives kids the opportunity to have a free airplane ride around Neepawa and area. We are very excited to be able to offer this program to our grade 6 students for the fourth year in a row! We are still looking for parents to step forward and offer to organize the BBQ, corral panels, and paperwork on site – please contact the office if you are willing to do this. We would like to remind all grade 6 parents that the registration form/waiver needs to be completed and returned to the school right away in order for your child to participate in the COPA for Kids program.
