MARYROSE SWARBRICK

Maryrose has worked extensively at all levels in the theatre, amateur and professional, in everything from pantomime to

Shakespeare in a variety of roles. Her voice was opera-trained by former Covent Garden soloist Brian Geldard. With her

daughters she founded Stage Door, a long-established school of performing arts and theatre company after managing to

combine all her interests with her former role as Head of Drama at St. Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst College for 16 years.

She has developed considerable expertise in sound, lighting and other technical aspects of staging and production.

However, musical theatre remains her first love, and as a director and choreographer she loves to encourage the young (and

not-so-young!) in all aspects of dance and drama, a mission enhanced in recent years by her role as adjudicator with the

British and International Federation of Festivals.

MUSIC ADJUDICATORS

RUTH GERALD FRCM

Ruth is currently a freelance musician, teacher, adjudicator and examiner. She was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal

College of Music in London from 1992 until 1999, having previously been appointed Faculty Advisor for Keyboard

Studies in 1987.

Her career has always pursued a very wide path of solo and lecture recitals, concertos, chamber music, Lieder recitals,

accompanying, adjudicating, examining and teaching. She was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Birmingham School of

Music (now the Birmingham Conservatoire) for a period of five years, but relinquished this post in order to devote more

time to performing and teaching at the Royal College, where she was Professor of Piano and Piano Accompaniment for

over thirty years. She was elected Fellow of the Royal College in 1985.

Born and educated in Australia, Ruth Gerald began her musical career there, broadcasting regularly at a very early age.

After winning the Elder Overseas Scholarship and gaining a Bachelor of Music degree at Adelaide University, she

continued with postgraduate studies at the Royal College where she was awarded many prizes, including the Hopkinson

Gold Medal.

Recently she has given master-classes in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and Greece, and conducted many

seminars for piano teachers in the UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. She is frequently invited to

adjudicate at Festivals world-wide, and is actively involved in many aspects of the work of the Associated Board of the

Royal Schools of Music.

5

Sheila Kent graduated from what is now the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, before training as a teacher at

Manchester University.

She headed music departments in schools for over twenty years, teaching all ages, and now gives in-service training to

other teachers as an associate tutor for Leicester University. Many of her former pupils are now professional musicians.

The Festival movement has been part of Sheila’s life since she was a regular school-age competitor. She spent over ten

years on a Festival committee, and her own pupils regularly enter a wide range of classes.

For many years Sheila Kent played chamber music and in orchestras professionally on a freelance basis until forced to stop

by a serious injury to her hand. She has been musical director for performances of many of the most popular musicals, and

for many years conducted a well-respected choir. Sheila is an instrumental and vocal examiner, working to diploma level.

Many of her vocal technique pupils are involved in Musical Theatre, which she also used to examine. As an adjudicator for

the British Federation of Festivals she has worked at music festivals across the UK, and as far afield as Hong Kong and

Zimbabwe.

of Szymanowski works (Hyperion/Helios CDH 55081) aroused much international acclaim, while his complete cycle of

Beethoven piano sonatas has been warmly received. He continues to perform widely in the USA, Canada, Europe and

South East Asia. He was an ABRSM examiner for over thirty years, and is also in demand as a lecturer and festival

adjudicator. He has judged the Canadian Music Competition (Finals) in Toronto, as well as the London International Piano

paintings from the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, and in 2012 was invited to appear with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra for

the tenth anniversary of the Esplanade Cultural centre. More recent concerts include Beethoven’s 4th Concerto in

Singapore and recitals in Malaysia, Thailand and the UK.

Choristers at Belfast Cathedral. However, since returning to England he has made a special study of the human voice and

its use in singing, and is now mainly involved in vocal teaching and choral activities. He is conductor of the Yorkshire
