Welcome back to another exciting year at Hawthorne Elementary. We are eager to get started and looking forward to a year filled with enthusiasm, learning, fun, learning, excitement, learning… You get my drift. Our goal for all of our children is that they grow and learn – and that they enjoy the process enough to become successful citizens and life-‐long learners. We have much to accomplish in the 2012-‐13 school year as we work together to provide the best education for every student.

CONTACTS WITH THE CLASSROOM
If you wish to speak with a teacher about your child’s progress or assignments, please call or schedule a visit between 7:30-8:00 a.m. or 3:00-3:30 p.m. Teachers may make other arrangements to meet during lunch or preparation periods. Phones will not ring into the classrooms after 8:00 a.m., so a voice mail will need to be left for the teacher or call back to the office for more immediate assistance. If you wish to visit with a teacher, it is best to set up an appointment that is convenient for you both.
We ask that parents not go to classrooms during instructional times to visit with a teacher/student or ask for homework. This takes valuable time away from the entire class and interrupts the lesson taking place. The teacher will be happy to visit with you when the students are not present and time is available for discussions. If it is necessary to get word to the teacher or student during the day, contact the office and we will relay the message.
If you would like to email a teacher, please use the following address: [email protected]
Please refer to the staff listing on the next page for first and last name.

Character Counts 6 Pillars of Character
Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring Citizenship
Hawthorne School will be focusing on the pillar of Trustworthiness for the month of September.
ATTENDANCE Please call 524-3503 if your child is ill or will not be attending school. You may call at any time, as Hawthorne has an automated phone system when secretaries are not present. You can leave a message letting us know if there has been a family emergency, the child is ill, etc. If the school does not receive a call, the Dean or secretary will then call the child’s home to see why he/she is not in attendance.
CAMPBELL LABELS
We’re off to a new school year, and our PTO would like everyone to continue to bring those Campbell products’ labels to school. Please attach labels to the collection sheet included in this newsletter. Please note that some labels are worth 5 points and others are worth 1 point. There are Campbell containers throughout the building for the labels to be deposited. We need thousands of labels to purchase items that are needed for the building. We appreciate your past help and look forward to having a good collection this year!

FROM THE NURSE’S DESK Medication Administration at School…
This is a reminder for all Hawthorne parents:
1. All medications to be dispensed at school must be in their original container. The nurse will discard all medications brought in any other way. No exceptions!
2. If your child is to take medication at school, we must have a signed release with your signature, the medication, the correct dose and the time it is to be given.
3. If your child has a medication to take three times a day (for example, an antibiotic), please arrange your schedule at home so it can be given before school, after school, and before bed time. We have approximately 550 students at Hawthorne. During cold season, that could potentially be quite a few antibiotics!!! Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
4. If your child is required to have medication administered at school, it is advisable that you, as the parent, bring it in to the office. We ask for your cooperation by NEVER sending it on the
bus or with your child. As parents and educators, our main concern is for the safety of our students. Medication will not be sent home with your child on the bus.
5. If you think your child might require an over-the-counter medication, such as Tylenol, Tums, etc., please supply these for your child. Again, we need a signed consent form prior to being able to supply over-the-counter medications.
DISMISSAL CHANGES If there is a change to the daily routine your child follows at dismissal time, please send a note. This information must come from the parent, not the student. If you happen to forget to write a note, you may call the office, but please do so by 1:30 p.m. The closer it is to dismissal time the more difficult it is to make sure your child receives the message. When sending notes to school, please write the date on the paper as well as your child’s first and last name along with the teacher’s name.

BIRTHDAY LUNCH
Students’ birthdays are recognized the last Friday of their birthday month. During lunch they sit at the “birthday table,” and are provided cake by the PTO. Students in the lunchroom join together in singing “Happy Birthday.” (Summer birthdays are included during an assigned month).
As stated in the 2013-2014 Student Handbook, “In order to avoid classroom disruptions, individual gifts for students such as flowers, balloons, and similar items are not to be delivered to school. These items will not be delivered to classrooms.”
The Keokuk Community School District has a policy regarding birthday and slumber parties. Please note that we cannot distribute personal invitations during the school day unless invitations are given to the entire class or all boys or all girls.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION NOTES
With the warm weather, many students
wear sandals, crocs, or flip-flops to school. These are not appropriate for Physical Education class. Students need to have their feet protected by closed-toe shoes that do not slip on the gym floor. Tennis shoes are best. We want all students to participate safely in PE and have an enjoyable experience.
APPROPRIATE STUDENT DRESS
Student dress should never distract from a class or school activity or be a hazard to the student’s safety or to the safety of others. Clothing that is torn or immodestly worn, shorts or shirts that are too short or too tight, or tube tops are not appropriate for school. Students not dressed appropriately may be sent home or the parent may be called and asked to bring different clothing.
The following items are not appropriate for school:
*Hats or any form of headgear worn within the building during the school day.
*Clothing that contains symbols or language that is obscene or racist, and/or advertisements that promote drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
