Congratulations
to Mrs. Lange’s
2nd grade class
for winning last
week’s Spirit
Award!
HAWKINS HUSKIES
Dear Hawkins Families,
We have had an eventful week with some good news to share and some sad news. We lost one of our
Hawkins’ staff member last week, Martha Martin. She was our English Learner Instructional Aide
since 2004, in that position she served students in grades K-8. She had a passion for helping students,
especially those students acquiring English. Martha also served as a translator for many parent and
teacher meetings throughout her time at Hawkins. She will be missed by her colleagues, students and
friends.
We also had news for celebration last week, 2nd and 5th grade teams met to review their grade level data
and found some exciting gains in the area of vocabulary and fluency. Every teacher was excited to
share how they are seeing students read more fluently and also their use of vocabulary has expanded in
their oral and written expression. Congratulations 2nd & 5th grade students and teachers!
The HPFC is a partnership that is invaluable to the students, teachers and parents of Hawkins. The
HPFC raises money to help fund our Artist in Residence program through San Joaquin County Office of
Education that brings the arts to all K-8 graders. They have also contribute to Science Camp, 8th grade
promotion and campus improvements such as benches, and the library research center along with won-
derful family events. There will be new opportunities for parents to become a part of the HPFC as each
board position (President, Treasurer, Secretary, VP of Committees and VP of Marketing) will be open
to nominations and voting in April. The general HPFC meeting in April will be an evening meeting,
please look for that date and more information to come.
We are on our second week of Pennies for Patients and have already had boxes overflowing with
change! Our Student Council members will be very busy organizing and counting change, please keep
emptying those pennies! This weekend is another 3 day weekend with a 4 day work week! Our girls
basketball teams are already starting practices and games start soon. Also save the date for Science
Night, February 22! Have a great week and Happy Valentine’s Day!
Best Regards,
Stephanie Gregson
Principal

Jefferson School District
2012-13 School Year Registration
and Transitional Kindergarten Information
The California Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 changed the law for
kindergarten entry date from December 2 to November 1, 2012. Chil-
dren must be 5 years old by November 1, 2012 to enter traditional kin-
dergarten. For the 2012-2013 school year, parents of students who turn
5 between November 2 and December 2, 2012 may choose to register
their children for Transitional Kindergarten.
Transitional Kindergarten is part of the public school system and is free
to participating students. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a
two-year kindergarten experience. Students who enroll in Transitional
Kindergarten will attend the program for the full 2012-2013 academic
year and then attend kindergarten for the following 2013-2014 school
year. Transitional Kindergarten classes will be four hours daily and will
be held on the Tom Hawkins School Campus.
Our Transitional Kindergarten program is contingent on State funding
which is uncertain at this time. We will continue to plan for and take
registrations for Transitional Kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year.
Until the state has an approved budget, Jefferson School District will
not know whether or not we will be able to provide this program. We
will notify families when the state makes a decision.
LIBRARY TALK This week will be the close of the California
Young Reader Medal program. Grades 4 -6 have
already cast their votes for their favorite picture
book for older readers, and grades K-3 will cast
their votes for their favorite primary picture book
this week. The two winning books for the State of
California will be revealed in early May.
Thank you and welcome to our three newest members in the

DARE at Hawkins began last week for
our 5th graders! This year millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence.
D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles and has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75 per-cent of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world.
D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.
