7January 2018

This is a hard one to believe! Firstly, I’m writing this report in December (due to MAG deadlines) and by the time you get to read it, it will be 2018!! Scary!

Decembers final acts were the Christmas auction, raising $.960.00 for the club coffers, and the run of the 17th December, well organised and put together by Steve & Pam Donovan. Once again the auction was well received (hope I didn’t offend anyone!) attended by 61 members and with a few tipples at hand, a few laughs (better than pills) hopefully you all went home in good spirits! The run was a chance to show the cars off by a drive through the centre of town before moving on to the secluded woods for the lunch stop. Remember the song “if you go into the woods today”, well it was a surprise and a great way to end the years calendar.

I hope you all had a good Christmas and a relaxing new year, and had some “me” time to put the feet up and enjoy life (or the old car). 2017 was but a blur, and seems to have passed even quicker than previous years. As a club we still managed to enjoy our runs, the social gatherings and the time spend in yesterdays cars. There have been some ups and downs, good and bad, but I’m sure the ups outweighed the downs.

As we move forward into 2018 we have a busy schedule, with an informal run in January, and the earlier Club Meeting of 7th February together with Art Deco Festival. This promises to be a great event for the VCC, not only as a major fund raiser, but the chance to showcase our cars and the place we call home, Hawkes Bay.

I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//

I can’t believe that I am writing this article, for what is effectively our January 2018 Mag. When did that happen.!!!! . Anyway I have got through my first six months as club captain, many thanks to those who have organised runs, picnics and other events and to the others who have offered to organise some next year, there will be a few surprises to keep us on our toes.

The children’s Christmas party was a great day, my 3 year old granddaughter was so excited about Santa coming, but when faced with the reality she raced back into the clubrooms and hid in the men’s toilets, maybe next year it won’t all be so daunting. Thanks to Hilary and Richard Anderson for organising the day and to Allan Twort for donning the red suit, apart from the aforementioned grandchild, the kids were really thrilled you took the time to drop by.

COMING EVENTS: Upcoming events are:

• Jan 28th 2018 an informal run to CHB

• 7th February Club Night (note this is a week early, to avoid a clash with Art Deco)

• 16th -18th February. Art Deco weekend-The 30th Anniversary of Art Deco

ART DECO: The Committee held an additional special “Art Deco” meeting where we focussed solely on the organisation of events and timelines for that weekend. It’s definitely all coming together well, we are going to see some amazing cars with the

30 “Simply the Best “ these are Star cars and motoring legends that Steve Trott has spent the last year organising, cajoling and persuading the owners to come to Napier. After the parade the cars will be on display in the sound shell, but on the Saturday morning you can get a preview, as the cars will also be on display at the clubrooms between ten and eleven, all members are welcome to come and view the cars, you don’t have to part of the Art Deco morning tea to come along.

2021 Festival of Historic Motoring: We received a letter from our VCC National president Diane Quarry regarding the 2021 Festival of Historic Motoring which will take place in New Plymouth from the 17th -23rd of January that year. Tony Hancock has been appointed as the new festival director. It looks like been quite a different concept and style from previous events, it’s described as shorter, sharper and more bang for your buck. Sounds exciting so watch out for more details.

Have an enjoyable Christmas and New Year, I look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying your cars next year.

Ian Elmsly, Chairman.

ART DECO SPONSORAlso on the night, Malcolm Blair, representing Eurocity, presented a cheque for $5,000 to the club as Principal Sponsor for Art Deco 2018.This presentation was accepted by Steve Trott on behalf of the club, as Art Deco co-ordinator and principal organiser for the 30 best cars that will be taking part in the festival. This is a very generous donation from a local business, and one that all members should be aware of as a major supporter of our club.

The Christmas auction night went very well with 61 people attending. After a short meeting it was straight into the auction with our “International Auctioneer Basil” who had just arrived off his yacht. With a drink in hand and nibbles on the table the bidders got into out-bidding each other for some great parcels with our auctioneer keeping us entertained. Thanks to Hooters who were unable to attend but donated a very generous prize to be auctioned that had a retail value of $250.00.$960 was raised on the night. Great effort for all those who came along.

Letter to members from the National President

VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING – NEW PLYMOUTH 2021

As I mentioned in my recent Beaded Wheels column, the Management Committee is fully committed to this event going ahead. I am therefore pleased to advise that Tony Haycock has been appointed as Festival Director. The Management Committee will be having a more hands-on role with the 2021 event, hence the appointment of a Management Committee member as the Director. Although Tony is currently National Speed Steward and is well known for his travel and journalist endeavours, in another life Tony has experience in event management and recently has been involved in organising major motoring events for overseas clubs. We have taken on board the concerns and comments from many members about the future of our International Rallies and Tony has come up with a new concept (see below) which is exciting and innovative and I have no doubt that with Tony’s enthusiasm and experience it will be a very successful event for our Club. Diane Quarrie

National President Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring - New Plymouth 2021 - A new beginning and whole new concept for our premier International event. Forget everything you thought you knew about VCC International rallies. For 2021 we have a totally new concept for a totally new style of rally. Shorter, sharper and more bang for your buck. This is THE old car, bike and truck event you will not want to miss. I can promise you a week of motoring, entertainment and activities, the likes of which you have never experienced before! We start the Festival with a massed arrival in New Plymouth on Sunday afternoon from the north and south, so you have the weekend to get there. We will then have four motoring days - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. So, what's happening on Wednesday? You might be thinking you can have a day off, and if you want to you can but I don't think you will want to and I'll explain why shortly. The four motoring days will see all entrants on the same route. If some of us are going to Hawera on day X, we all are. You will get to see all the cars, the trucks and the bikes, every day. No more travelling with the same group of vehicles every day while the other 4/5th of the rally has gone somewhere else - your mates included. Until now, there have been no National Rallies in the same year as an International. 2021 will be very different. Wednesday will see the National Veteran, Motorcycle and Commercial rallies taking place. For the other VCC categories which currently do not have a National rally, don't worry - there will be something for you too. Rally headquarters will be the heart of the Festival and there will be good food, good drink, and plenty of entertainment right there - the ideal way to sit down with friends after a great day of motoring to tell lies about what you have been up to. At the same time, the New Plymouth Festival

19January 2018

Hi Folks,Hope you all had an amazing Christmas and are looking forward to 2018! Meet ‘Betsy’ (Insert Image)Yep, it’s another new addition to the fleet and she really is stunning. A 1930 Willys Whippet.Betsy joins us from Cambridge where she was restored by an engineer. She is immaculate and drives wonderfully. A unique feature is that the centre button is the starter, the lights and the horn! It has been a crazy end to the year with weddings, cruise ships, wine tours and of course lots and lots of Art Deco Tours. The weather has just been amazing. Most of you know that we used to run the business in the UK but what most will never understand, is just how much nicer it is to run it here in sunny Napier, Hawke’s Bay. We love what we do and we love old cars, but what we really love is the unique pleasure of being able to make someone’s experience.

People are either on holiday, have guests visiting or on special occasions and everyone is just in such a fun loving mood. This month alone we have been blessed to witness several birthdays, a wedding proposal, a surprise son’s arrival from the UK, yep mid-tour and a 50th wedding anniversary. It really is an honour to be part of these beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. How many people get to say they spend all day making people smile? What a vocation! Which leads me to: I know I make this plea regularly but we still need drivers for our ever growing fleet, if you fancy joining the crazy team then please do come and have a chat. If you love people, Napier and most of all driving vintage cars then this could be the perfect part time job for you. We are also still looking for a mechanic to join the team, whether it be a tinkerer, part timer or someone wanting regular work. Come and have a chat if it sounds like your thing. Really missed seeing you all at the Xmas Auction but unfortunately it was after the Ovation of the Seas and as you can imagine it was a manic day for the team and did unfortunately include a few breakdowns and car change overs so the team were working late into the evening. Hope you all had an amazing evening and had a lot of laughs. :-) Well that’s it for another month, be seeing you…

of Lights will be taking place at Pukekura Park, and this world-renowned spectacle is both free, and only a couple of minutes walk from HQ . The public display will be a twilight event, and Friday night will see the final function, giving everyone the weekend to get back home for work. The proposed date at this stage is 17th to 23rd January 2021. The new format is something which has never been done by the VCC before and is the result of listening to comments from members and previous rally entrants over several years. It will be a gathering of the most diverse range of New Zealand and overseas motoring heritage ever to have been assembled in one place. Tony Haycock Festival Director
