Hawaii Sport is honored to be work-ing with internationally acclaimed and Honolulu based photographer Cyndia Lavik, who was recently selected as the Runner Up in the Professional Photographers Asso-ciation photography contest. Her winning photo of Honolulu athlete Todd Iacovelli was featured in a previ-ous Hawaii Sport issue. In this issue, Lavik revisits her love of cycling and captures images of members from the local cycle scene:

“Carl is a well-known figure in the local cycling community, so as I photographer, I wanted a memo-rable location that would capture Carl’s unique energy. I asked that he select our location; he chose the Old Pali Highway. It was perfect. In my opinion, Carl’s the ideal person to illustrate how much fun cycling can be. Plus, the long stretches of road framed by the rainforest provided a great backdrop to showcase the beauty of cycling in here Hawaii. (Luckily, we managed to avoid the rain, but not the mosquitos.)

Later we arranged a group shot. The cyclists had recently participated in the Dick Evans Memorial Road Race and so the mood was easy and light. We staged a “bike journey” around Diamond Head followed by breakfast on Waialae Avenue. The group joked that the commute to the photo shoot was longer than the distance covered during the photo shoot itself. That’s what I love about the cycling commu-nity—the camaraderie and positivity. Sure, these cyclists race against each other, but they can also just relax and have fun too. A big mahalo to Riders Carl Brooks, Bill Lezzer, Jason Na-kayama, Joe Kennedy, Eric Kollai,Tim Kutara and Rick Marine.”

In the last issue I wrote about “The Rules” that Bill Curry made in order to handle a challenge that turned out to be much more than he expected. In presenting The Rules to my client base, I soon discovered the rules need to be modified to handle extreme challenges that go beyond, way beyond, what could be imagined. The issue with challenges of this mag-nitude is that by definition they must be resolved completely. This not about improving your performance. You must move forward. You must become The Rules. Hence the title, “Live The Rules.”

The Rules in Review: Show Up Rested, Trust in the Process and Find the Beauty.Purpose: Handle extreme challenges with grace and humility.

Show Up RestedHave the courage to face your fear, pain and discomfort as it relates to issues that threaten your health, happiness and ability to accept serious challenges. Note: To operate at this level of acceptance, you cannot afford to be the victim and present yourself and your situation in a negative light.Activity: Find a metaphor that describes the challenge in proactive and perhaps even in positive, light, and humorous terms. This will allow you to discuss the situation without needing to deal with drama and the related anger/fear, i.e.; All Steps Forward, Face the Music.

Trust in the ProcessAllow the experience to be resolved within you and to become part of the process. Find a way that enables you to be present and engaged and to accept the situation.Release the wisdom that allows you to have the courage to be genuine and caring along the way.Note: To trust in your process you will need to model the behavior that allows you to have the confidence (fake it ‘till you make it) to continue and allow others to support you. A critical component in this regard is the eagerness to resolve this issue so you don’t infect yourself, your loved ones and others with this toxic energy. Activity: Define the process in terms of activating your performance psychology to use your breathing to settle down, your mind–set to create a positive attitude, and your focus to see both the big picture for the long term and in the short term in order to have compassion, empathy and serenity.

Find the BeautyFlip the experience, reframe it and find the perfection of the situation in order to make a slight or major correction, cultivate a skill, or clear away something from your life.Learn the meaning of this experience and face it straight on without creating muck – feelings of revenge or regret.Allow the experience to open you and to let your spirit express feelings of strength, joy and humility.Note: Finding beauty in a situation that feels like survival is the best use of your imagination and creativity. Success in this regard will give you the confidence in your ability to get through difficult situations, and learn the lessons you need to become the person you didn’t even know you wanted to be.Activity: Debrief your experience regularly. Record your progress in a journal that captures the essence of what you have learned.

To Live The RulesThe ability to “Live The Rules” will allow you to:Resolve extreme challenges that will set you up to win the competition that represents the game of your life.Experience satisfaction knowing that you have focused on the areas of your performance that you can control.Realize the success that comes when you work hard and the results of your efforts represent your best effort. That’s HiLevel!

What Does A Rider Do At The Crossroads Of Life? He Forges A New Trail On A Familiar Path.by Rae Sojot, photo Cyndia Lavik

Recently Carl Brooks found himself standing at a crossroad. After nearly a two decade long stint at his previous job, it was time to move on. Carl had been a fixture where he worked, his calm demeanor complimenting his knowledge of bikes. He held easy rapport with cycling enthusiasts of all skill levels, and was an elite competitor on the local race scene, not to mention being the favored go-to guy for out-of-town riders hoping for an island guide. Carl stayed calm. While other people would have panicked, Carl, an Alabama native, did what most people with Southern roots are apt to do…he reckoned for a bit. He realized the old trite cliche ‘when one door closes, others open’ rang true. Indeed. New opportunities was out there waiting for Carl Brooks.

Growing up in the South, in a house across from a lake, Carl was first introduced to cycling courtesy of his triathlete father. Train-ing time served as family time and a young Carl accompanied his dad on swims, runs and rides when he wasn’t when already fishing or chasing his older brother around on a bike. One day he followed his brother into a forbidden neighborhood and proceed-ed to launch down the biggest hill—landing him in the ER with 52 stitches to his face alone. He was six years old. When he got home, all Carl wanted was to get back on the bike. His mom put him on the swim team.

Carl continued his dad’s triathlon tradition while in the small college town of Montevallo. He honed his competitive skills on Alabama’s healthy 80’s race scene. There were races nearly every weekend across the state if you were willing to travel—which Carl was. He swam before and after his lifeguard shift at Blue Water, a rock quarry that had been transformed into a swimming pool nearly a mile long. He got his training runs in. But it was Mon-tevallo’s miles and miles of back country roads and trails that Carl began to relish on the bike. The long, uninterrupted stretches bolstered his nascent love for cycling into something stronger. The rides were an extension of himself. In an ironic twist, upon moving to Hawaii—the mecca of triath-lon—and spending a few years on the local race circuit, Carl had a self-described awakening towards cycling. While swimming and running were no doubt enjoyable, something drew him to cycling more. He preferred it. He was better at it. Setting his sights on the road racing scene, Carl channeled his energy into cycling. The accolades started amassing.

Today, despite an impressive resume, the Alabama-na-tive-turned-island-son remains the anti-thesis of self-promotion, preferring to swap cycle stories than brag about races wins. Rather than flaunt his finisher’s medal from Cape Epic, (a brutally challenging event considered the Tour de France of mountain biking), he’ll share the hard lesson earned and learned in the med tent, bonking from a sub-par nutrition and hydration plan. Was

Page 13: Hawaii Sport November 2014 digital

winning 2008 Dick Evans, Hawaii’s premiere road race, by a mere hairbreadth’s awesome? Yes, but what stood out was not the sheer glory of victory. According to Carl, he will tell you what made it awesome was that it was the first time he proved he could sprint.

Along with racing came travel. Carl’s bikes holds stories and through them he shares treasured mo-ments gleaned from his experiences on the road—like seeing grandmothers in the Dolomites riding 3 speed bikes on their grocery runs or being inspired by truly bike friendly communities in Oregon.

These kind of stories, told with no artifice, is what makes Carl able to reach such a wide audience. People recognize his passion; his friends care about his future.

After his layoff, Carl was at a crossroads. What would he do next? What could he do next?

Carl took stock of his passion. While examining the myriad new paths that he could embark upon, a fa-miliar one began to emerge. Thirteen years earlier, he and friend Peter Bourne had run a race pro-motions group organizing a number of mountain bike races, duathlons, triathlons and runs. So Carl possessed events directing experience. His 16 years at BikeFactory garnered valuable cycle industry experience. Moreover, his affable nature lent itself well to people—in fact, how many times had he been the tour guide for visiting business folk, sales reps and new riders? He loved doing that stuff, making new friends and taking them around the island. Why not build off of all of that? And that’s when Carl knew: He could combine his passion for cycling and Hawaii… and ride to live.

Soon the business began to take shape yet Carl struggled to find a name for it. “I’ve always liked Outta Bounds,” his friend Peter suggested, making reference to the early race promotions company they had run together. The name felt good to Carl. It was familiar, like a phoenix rising from the ashes. And so Outta Bounds Hawaii was born again, renewed and revamped and endowed with signifi-cant personal meaning for Carl. In this opportunity, Carl was given a chance to recreate life as he knew it, making a stride to live his dreams. Outta Bounds Hawaii not only meant stepping out of the box for Carl, but stepping onto a path that was made just for him. —RS

A Bespoke Tourby Rae Sojot

HONOLULU, OAHU From riding to racing and now di-recting, Carl Brooks is at the helm of Outta Bounds Hawaii, a brand new customized bike tour company based here on Oahu. Rather than providing set-course rides, Outta Bounds Hawaii offers cycling tours tailored to clients’ wishes.

Common considerations noted during an initial Meet & Greet with clients include rider skill, preferred ride time (what time of day—early morning, late afternoon, etc), type of ride desired, what kind of island sites to visit, and most importantly—how much time is available. Outta Bounds Hawaii’s first tour hosted a visiting group of Herbalife representatives over the course of 7 days—a wonder-ful timeframe for experiencing the island’s scenic sites. Luckily, even a 2 hour tour is just as rewarding as Outta Bounds Hawaii has countless options on offer.

According to Brooks, Tantalus is a favorite for clients who like to climb. For those who don’t, the Kalanianaole to Makapuu and further onto Bel-lows is well-liked for its breathtaking coastal views. And because each tour is customized, every day brings a different adventure in paradise. Case in point: One day during the Herbalife tour, the group stopped for a photo op at Haunauma Bay. As Brooks readied the camera, a pod of whales began breaching behind them. “Turn around, guys,” Brooks advised the group. The group was in awe and immediate-ly pulled out their cameras to snap shots. “Yes, I had them come out to see you guys. They knew you all are special.”

ASK THE TRAINERby KC Carlberg

It is that time of year when the holidays loom in the near future and your workout program along with your motivation, has become a little stale. Rejuvenating your fitness program and is easy and can lead to fun and inspiring adventures.

Q: I’m so bored with my workout program but I’m too busy to make something new happen. What can I do?

A: Well first of all I commend you for articulating your frustration and reaching out. This shows signs of willing-ness and a desire to meet your health and fitness needs. Boredom with your workout program is quite common as we have a tendency to do the same things over and over again. I say get off the road and onto the trails. I also recommend trail run-ning as a great off season activity for triathletes. Trail running is not only good for the body but also great for the soul and here is why:

Trail Running is Easier on Your BodyMost of us run on pavement or asphalt, some of the hardest surfaces, which are hard on the body, affecting the hip and knee joints as well as the feet, back and ankles. You might not notice the wear and tear when you are young, but as you get older, your body will let you know for sure. In contrast, a trail offers softer surfaces and better shock absorption which is much gentler on the body. Some people have even commented that it takes them longer to recover from a marathon run on the road than a half marathon run on a trail.Dr. Scott Levin, a New York-based sports medicine expert and orthopedic surgeon, who says: “Trails are going to take away a lot of stress from the impact that you’d normally get running on harder surfaces,” says Dr. Scott Levin, a New York-based sports medicine expert and orthopedic surgeon. “Some of the forces that would normally be transmitted from the pavement up to the ankles, knees, shins, and hips are dissipated when the foot hits the ground on the trails because there’s some give there.”

Trail Running Equals Fewer InjuriesThe repetitive movement of running puts a lot of stress on the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the lower body. Running on harder surfaces can cause weakness in these areas resulting in imbalance in the whole system. The trail is uneven, rocky and rooty which challenges you to constantly make adjustments in your speed, stride, angle of foot placement and more. By doing so, you automatically engage more muscles as you adapt to wider ranges of motion. This helps in reducing injury.

Trail Running Burns More CaloriesMany of us want to shed a few pounds and trail running is the perfect solu-tion. Trails are generally hillier in their profile. Your body uses more energy to climb, and uses up to 15% more energy on softer surfaces. They say that running 7 miles on the trail is equivalent to 8 miles on the road. And, because of the extra energy you are using to manage the uneven surfaces, you burn more calories, which is always a great thing, especially as the holidays are approaching.

Trail Running is FunIf you are a runner, you know that over a period of time you have run the same roads over and over again. Trail running offers a dif-ferent view of the world through nature. No more traffic lights to stop at or noisy cars, just peaceful bliss. The changes in the terrain force you to stay in the moment, focusing on your footing and the challenge of the environment.According to Dr. Jerry Lynch, a Boulder, Colorado based psy-

chologist and author, “Trails just have a way of closing off the rest of

the world and all of the chaos.” He goes on to say that “trail running is quiet and contemplative,” and he even prescribes trail running to his patients who suffer from depression. “I’ve had several clients over the years who were depressed and taking medication and it wasn’t working. I steered them toward trail running and they became more at peace with themselves and found joy,” says Dr. Lynch.

Instead of letting the impending busyness of the holiday season and the boredom of your fitness program bring you down, finish your year off strong by hitting the trails. There is no limit to what you can experience, you just have to get out there and give it a go. The extra effort to get a good hydration system and some good running or trail shoes will be so worth it, both mentally and physi-cally, when you take your first run. Be safe, have fun and always be inspired by your health and fitness.

Whether you want to lose weight, run faster or climb Mount Everest, a personalized program is your best bet in achieving those goals. The hard work is always worth the effort in being successful. Let me know how I can help you with your journey and email any questions you may have to “Ask the Trainer” at [email protected]. And remember “PERSISTENT CONSISTENCY” is the key to success.

Until next time, train hard, laugh often, love passionate-ly and have fun.KC Carlberg, MPH and owner of Try Fitness Hawaii, www.tryfitnesshawaii.com

Gorgeous Photograph Collection Goggles & Dust Celebrates Cycling's Glory Days

1920s-1930s Vintage Cycling Photographs Curated from Original Silver Gelatin Prints in The Horton Collection

During the 1920s and 1930s, cy-cling was the world's most popular sport. The races were impossibly difficult, the riders larger than life. All of Europe anticipated every race report in breathtaking newspaper accounts. This September, newly restored photographs in Goggles & Dust: Images from Cycling's Glory Days celebrate the grit and determination of bicycling's earliest heroes. Goggles & Dust is available now in bookstores, bike shops, and online. Preview a selection of the book's vintage cycling photographs at www.velopress.com/goggles.

Ottavio Bottecchia, Eugène Christo-phe, Henri Pélissier, André Leducq, René Vietto-the daring spirit of these cycling pioneers was perhaps matched only by the remarkable pho-tographers who prevailed in all con-ditions to capture striking portraits of the racers at work and play.

Curated from the original silver gelatin prints in The Horton Collection, the gorgeous restored portraits and landscapes in Goggles & Dust-most unseen since their original publication in the newspapers and magazines of the day-provide an indelible record of a more carefree and adventurous time.

As you prepare for the Honolulu Marathon, your training runs and cross training days are getting longer and more intense. Some of you may have already expe-rienced a twinge of low back pain after a long run, or even worse...while you’re running!

There are many potential origins of back pain in runners, but two of the most common are low back muscle strains, and lumbar disk injuries. Muscle strains occur when imbalances in the back and hip muscles and core weakness cause repetitive stresses to the lower back. Lumbar disk injuries may develop after transitioning from long periods of sitting (which puts strain on the lumbar disk) to vigorous exercise without a proper warm up. Disk injuries can also happen when training on hills if your back is in excessive forward flexion. Neither situa-tion is good, especially if your back acts up during a long run.

Just because you may be experiencing back pain doesn’t mean you have to en-dure it throughout the rest of your marathon training. Here are a few exercises to keep your back healthy and fit, so you can compete at the highest level!

Prone Press Up: Keeping your hips pressed against the floor, extend your back by straightening your arms. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 3 times. This exercise is great for lumbar disk health and can reverse the results of prolonged forward flexion (sitting at the desk).

Figure 4 Stretch: With your knees bent to 90 degrees, cross your right leg over your left and pull your left leg towards your chest. The stretch should be felt in right hip and but-tock area. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat 2 times.

Hamstring Stretch with strap:With your knee slightly bent, pull your leg towards your head using a towel or strap. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat 2 times. This exercise is great for your back health because having good hamstring flexibility decreases low back strain.

High Prone Plank with Opposite Leg Lift:Keeping your body and legs as straight as you can, alternately lift your legs hold-ing for about 5 seconds. Complete 10 on each leg.

High Side Plank: Keeping your shoulder, hip and ankle aligned, hold position for 30 seconds. Work your way up to 1 minutes holds.

These are great exercises for your back health, but if your symptoms persist or worsen don’t hesitate to come see us at Jaco Rehab. We are passionate about helping you compete at the highest level! See you on the pavement!

“With 6 miles to go”

Page 30: Hawaii Sport November 2014 digital

Adventures in World Championshipsby Lori McCarney, Photos Courtesy of Rick Keene

In 2009, I qualified for the Ironman World Championship by being the first Hawaii finisher in my age group at the Hawaii 70.3 Ironman, “Honu”. As I accepted the Kona slot and paid my money, I was excited and scared. This was my fourth Honu, but I had never raced the Ironman distance. I trained and trained and trained, but Kona brought me a DNF with only ½ mile to go.

As I raced around the world in my attempt to return to Kona, I came to better understand how difficult it is to qualify for the Ironman World Championship and how coveted racing at Kona is. Thousands of strong athletes race and race for years hoping to win a Kona slot. It was a tough battle for me in Brazil to finally win my age group and earn my invitation to Kona this year.

Maybe because we’re familiar with Honu, or maybe because Kona is close by, or maybe be-cause Hawaii residents can earn lottery slots to the Ironman World Championship (I earned a lottery slot in 2013), we may feel that racing at Kona is not a question of if, but when. If you are lucky enough to find yourself with a Kona slot, please don’t take it for granted.

If you’re not sure you can do Kona, maybe you should wait until you are more confident before you register for the Honu lottery, perhaps by doing another Ironman first. I wish I would have. Kona is a tough course--cer-tainly one of the toughest on a good day and extremely difficult on a bad one.

Racing at the Ironman World Championship means staying uber confident and focused on your race and

not getting discouraged. Remember that most Kona athletes won their divisions at qualifying races, so it can be a very lonely race for those of us who don’t finish in 10-11 hours. At most Iron-man races, where I finish somewhere around 13-14 hours, there are plen-ty of people out with me on the bike and the run. At Kona, when I came in off of the bike, I was quite alone and I stayed pretty much alone until I crossed the finish line at 14:13 last year and 15:24 this year.

There are other World Championship races you should also consid-er. The International Triathlon Union (ITU) holds a variety of cham-pionship races, including Sprint Distance, Olympic Distance, Duathlons and more at different places around the world. To race at one of these, you need to qualify for Team USA, via general and spe-cific USAT events. Lots of information about these events is available online.

I was invited to join Team USA for the ITU

Long Distance World Championship in Weihai China this September. This event consisted of a 4K swim, 120K bike

and 20K run. It was an incredible experience and much different from an Ironman race. Racing on a team and racing for the USA was simply amazing and I made new friendships that I truly value. I felt like a super star when I received my bronze medal on the podium that day.

As I move on to become the CEO of Bikeshare Hawaii, I will not leave triathlon behind. No more Ironman races for me, but there are sure plenty of 70.3’s and maybe ITU races to target!

Coming into transition after 75 miles and 7000 feet of climbing, I’m ready to run. At ITU races, all T1 and T2 transition items must be within a blue box next to your bike.

What could be better than having my tenth and final Ironman be the World Championship? Seeing the King of the Sherpas, my husband Rick Keene at the finish, of course!

Honolulu Century Ride Recap

photos courtesy of HBL

The 33rd Annual Honolulu Century Ride was

a fabulous day for the 1715 riders, support-

ed by over 200 volunteers. The untimed

ride, featuring turnaround distances of 20,

25, 50, and 75 miles (in addition to the full

100 miles) gave participants of all ages and

abilities the opportunity to experience the

diverse beauty of Oahu’s windward side,

from Kapiolani Park to Swanzy Beach (Kaaa-

wa), passing through Hawaii Kai, Waimanalo,

Kailua, Kaneohe, and Kahaluu. The weather

was overcast with occasional showers, almost

perfect for distance cycling. (Riding under

blue skies can get awfully hot!)

Back at the Kapiolani Park finish, everyone enjoyed the

entertainment program provided by halau Aloha o Puu-

wailani, the Marine Corps Band of the Pacific, the Royal

Hawaiian Band, and saxophone soloist Randy Focht.

Mahalo to everyone who rode, volunteered, and other-

wise made the day a success. Next up: Haleiwa Metric

Century on April 26.

44th JTB Maui Marathon, September 21, 2014The Island of Maui, By: Augusto Decastro

All bets were off. I came here for heat training, and that’s exactly what I got. Most of my running friends were broken by the Maui Marathon because of overheating or cramping. In part, the Maui Marathon’s appeal for me was not only to endure the 26.2 miles, but to also survive the heat in the process. My goal was to run well to get as much milage before the sun comes up, then switch to survival mode after.

However, I took home more than what I expected from this mar-athon. This is hardly news, but runners take care of each other. Runners generally compete with one another, but when emergen-cies arise, helping a fellow runner takes priority. Before the gun went off to mark the beginning of the marathon, a drunk driver plowed through the runners and spectators at the start line. A few runners held on to the car, banged on the windows, and yelled at the driver to stop. Fortunately nobody was badly injured. This act of bravery most likely prevented the drunk driver from causing more harm to other participants. The driver was arrested and the race was allowed to continue. All throughout the course I witnessed runners help-ing one another. A couple of runners stopped to stretch another runner’s legs who was having bad muscle cramps. A young woman found a cell phone on the course and decided to run a little faster in the heat to ask runners ahead if it was their phone or not. Anoth-er runner ran back to an aid station to grab for someone to help a downed runner who was clearly experiencing heat related issues. These unsung heros motivated me to run smart, stay healthy, and be ready to help out when needed. Luckily I did not pass anybody in critical condition.

The Maui Marathon is a point-to-point course that begins in Kahului and finishes in Kaanapali. The route is mostly flat with the elevation peaking at no more than 200 feet at around mile 9. When the sun came up, I enjoyed the spectacular views of the mountains on my right and the wide ocean to my left. I kept reminding myself that there are plenty of time for the beach after I complete the race. The aid stations were well stocked with water, ice, sports drink, and most importantly enthusiastic volunteers. Some stations had bananas, grapes, watermelon, power bars, and cold sponges. One station had shave ice, but I was quickly advised to keep going and not hangout. The race organizers strategically spread out the aid stations more closely to each other towards the last half of the race than at the beginning which I thought was pretty clever. I was particularly im-pressed with a few spectators who showed up early when it was still dark. Some runners had crews who leapfrogged their person to take their pictures, to provide personal aid, and to cheer for other runners as well. Overall I enjoyed this race very much. If you want the chal-lenge of a course with tough conditions, this is your race. The spirit of Aloha was surely spread throughout this marathon and I certainly would come back to do it again.
