Society of American Military Engineers,Honolulu Post Volunteers for University ofHawaii Junior Engineering Expo

Volunteers from Society of American MilitaryEngineers (SAME), Honolulu Post hosted the“Juice Box Tower” challenge at the Universityof Hawaii (UH) Junior Engineering Expo.

The UH Junior Engineering Expo is heldannually and hosts over 200 students fromOahu middle schools. Middle school studentshad a chance to meet UH engineering studentsand others in the engineering industry, includ-ing SAME volunteers from theArchitect/Engineering (A-E) consulting field.Middle school students competed in variousengineering competitions, such as bridgebuilding, a marshmallow catapult and SAME’sactivity - the “Juice Box Tower” structural com-petition. Students were given a stack of color-ful construction paper and one roll of Scotchtape. The rules were provided to students priorto “construction” of their tower and studentswere asked to build a construction paper struc-ture that would be given 1 point for each sixinches of height and 2 points for every juicebox that was able to be stacked on top of thestructure. Students from each school had towork together as a team to determine the bestapproach for building their structure. After 30minutes, all of the schools presented theirstructures and attempted to stack the juiceboxes on the top. Most of the groups’ struc-tures were able to hold all of the 16 juice boxes, however, some toppled and fell under theweight. Points were totaled and awards weregiven to the middle schools that won the most

points in each of the different junior expo com-petitions.

The students had fun along with the SAMEvolunteers and it was a great way to interactwith aspiring engineering, science and tech-nology students in a fun activity that demon-strates basic engineering concepts.

KNOW YOUR ASCE HISTORYby C.S. Papacostas

ULULANIInside the nave of the Kawaiahao Church on

Punchbown Street in Honolulu, to the left asone enters from the narthex, there hangs a mar-ble memorial tablet with the intaglio inscription:

IN MEMORY OFLEVI HAALELEA1828 - 1864HIS WIFEULULANI A. A. HAALELEA1842 - 1904ANDRICHARD HAALILIO1808 - 1844

Unfortunately, the inscribed year of Levi’sbirth is wrong: all evidence points to his birth in1822 and not in 1828.

The tablet was unveiled on Sunday, October13, 1907, according to the the HawaiianGazette (HG) of the previous Tuesday that car-ried a story saying that it had been alreadyplaced in the church. I personally verified inFebruary 2013 that it is still hanging where itwas first put back in 1907, error and all.

Ha`alilio was Levi’s brother, a mightly chiefwho led a well-known diplomatic mission toEurope in 1842 along with missionary teacherand diplomat William Richards for whom, according to “Place Names of Hawaii”Richards Street was named in 1850. Ha`alilio’smost-often cited english name was Timothy (orTimoteo in Hawaiian) and the only other histor-ical reference to him as “Richard” that I wasable to find so far is on a headstone inscriptionat Kawaiahao that also repeats the error of hisbother’s year of birth!

As I explained last month (March 2013),Ululani was one of several names associatedwith Levi’s second wife. About her, the HG arti-cle says that “she became early in life identi-fied with the royal family, and through the reignof five sovereigns, was a prominent and attrac-tive figure in court circles.”

After the wedding, “Haalelea brought hisbride to his home in Honolulu - the place knownin those days as Holani Pa is now calledHaalelea Lawn.” This is the place where theEngineering Association held its regular meet-ings between 1904 and 1906 that has broughtmy story-telling to this juncture.

The HG also tells that she was a skilled poetand that at the time of her death she had par-tially completed a translation of Lew Wallace’snovel “Ben Hur” into Hawaiian. Moreover, “theQueen Dowager, cousin of Haalelea, had herresidence adjoining Holani Pa, and was withher that Mrs Haalelea spent much of her time. She kept a fine pair of horses and a white manfor a driver - an unusual thing for those days.”

Her many social engagements and travels, often in the company of her sister who wasmost often referred to as Mrs. L.A. Coney, received significant coverage in both the localand national presses. The two were even men-tioned in Queen Lili`uokalani’s book “Hawaii’sStory by Hawaii’s Queen.” For example, in theQueen’s own words, among those who came tovisit her during her first trip to the United Statesin 1878 were “Mrs. Haalelea and Mrs. Coney(at this time residing at Oakland with the chil-dren of Mrs. Coney).” A visit to The Hampton,Va., Negro and Indian School where sheshowed her husband’s “cape and neckless”

was reported in The Auburn [New York] Bulletinof July 3, 1888.

Ululani became a strong supporter andbenefactor of Kawaiahao Church, even leavinga sum $500 to it and another $500 to Rev.Henry Hodges Parker, the church’s pastor, inher will [Hawaiian Star 5/9/1904]. In this con-nection, during the 1907 unveiling of the tablet, she was described as “the second founder ofKawaiahao” for taking the lead to fund raise inorder to fix the Church that had become “adangerous place to enter on account of the rot-tenness of the roof and other timbers [HG10/15/1907].” Her obituary that appeared in theHG of April 29, 1904 also told of her “unswerv-ing devotion to Kawaiahao Church and theHawaiian people.”

Three days earlier, the Hawaiian Starannounced her death from diabetes at 9:35o’clock that morning and that among her hus-band’s many lands were Honouliuli, “a largetrack of land extending up Tantalus,” andHaalelea Lawn.

Speaking of Haalelea Lawn, some of youmay recall from last month’s article that whenopened in 1901, the Honolulu Rapid Transit &Land (HRT&L) Co. streetcars were running soclose to the Lawn’s wall along the Royal Walkstretch of Hotel Street that overhanging treebranches caused physical injuries to passen-gers.

The government’s response to this danger-ous situation was announced in the HG of April25, 1902: “Work has been started on the demo-lition of the stone wall on Hotel street which hasbeen a constant source of danger to passen-gers on the Rapid Transit cars. Haalelea Lawnwas at one time used as an American Hospitalfor seamen and later by German ConsulHackfeld as a residence. All transfers to theDepartment of Public Works have been finallycompleted.”

The Report of the Surveyor to the Governorof the Territory of Hawaii for the Year EndingJune 30, 1902 shows among the “new linesmarked on the ground for widening of streets”a “strip in front of Haalelea Lawn, widened 19feet.” Details of what this property takingentailed were summarized by the HawaiianStar of April 24, 1902: transplanting of sometrees, removal and reconstruction of a kitchenand small cottage, and demolition of a “standwhich raised above the wall” and was “used asan observatory in bygone days as a point ofvantage from which to view the outside world atone’s ease,” similar to other observation stands“erected during the regime of royalty.”

The image below is an excerpt from the 1891Dakin Fire Insurance Maps that showsHaalelea Lawn prior to this modification. At thattime, the previous Central Union Church(resulting from the merger of the Bethel UnionChurch and the Fort Street Church) was underconstruction at the corner of Richards andBeretania Streets and the post-card photo-graph shows the completed blue-stone edificealong Richards Street.

Forthcoming: Changes in the area over sub-sequent years.
