Have you nominated your Health Heroes?
Don’t forget to nominate a colleague or a team for one of our Health
Heroes awards. Since we launched the awards we’ve received lots of
nominations, but we know that there is much more out there worth
celebrating across our hospitals. This is where we need your help.
Do you know an individual or team that is extra special, and who really
go out of their way to make life a little bit better for patients and
colleagues? If so, we want to hear about them! It isn’t just UHMBT staff
that can nominate - we want to hear from patients, visitors, and
members of the public as well. There are eight categories in total, two of
which are highlighted below:
Student / Trainee of the Year: Celebrating the great work and
commitment undertaking by a student or trainee in our hospitals, this
award is looking for a clear demonstration of the person leading by
example and putting their learning into practical use for the benefit of
others. Open for all students/trainees studying a recognised qualification.
You might notice a few changes in this year’s Health Heroes - namely the
award categories and the way we judge the categories. We originally
launched Health Heroes in 2012 so we felt it was time to refresh the
categories to better reflect our priorities and the values- based culture we are developing at the Trust.
This year, three finalists will be selected for each category. The nominator will then be invited to present in
front of a panel of judges, where the winner will then be decided.

Christmas and New Year pay days 2017 Monthly paid staff - pay day in December will be Wednesday 20 December. Due to the early
payday, all claims must be submitted on Epay no later than Monday 4 December as claims
need to be approved by 6pm on 6th December. For areas that use HealthRoster and Bank, you
need to finalise all monthly paid shifts worked in November by 3 December.
Weekly paid bank staff - there will be no pay day on Thursday 28 December, but a double pay week on
Thursday 21 December. Shifts worked for the period 11-17 December will be paid a week early, and will need to
be finalised no later than the end of the day on the 17 December for these to be processed for payment on the
21st. Any shifts not finalised by this deadline will be carried forward and paid on the 4 January. To view the

Keeping you up to date with the Maternity Unit progress As you will no doubt be aware, the brand new £12m Maternity Unit at FGH is
nearing completion. To ensure that the handover of the new unit goes
smoothly, we set up a special committee who is responsible for keeping the
project on track and reporting to the Trust Board on progress.
The Maternity Unit Planning and Oversight Committee met on 16 November
to receive an update on progress. We are very pleased to report that things
are on track and we expect the new unit to be handed over from the
contractor to the Trust in early December. Following handover, a period of commissioning will take place to
ensure all the equipment is installed and tested, and the unit is cleaned.
In the New Year, the multi-disciplinary teams will start their induction and training in the new unit, which we
expect will take four weeks. This induction and training is essential as it makes sure that staff feel at home in the
new unit and are confident on where equipment and supplies are located, should they need them.
After this has taken place, we will move into the new unit, which we expect to be completed at the beginning of
February 2018. During the move, both the new and old unit will be staffed to ensure a smooth transition for staff,
women and families. The unit will be officially opened on Valentine’s Day (14 February 2018). To read the full

Don’t miss out on your Christmas lunch! We are delighted to announce the return of the free Christmas dinner. You can retrieve
your free lunch with the advice note that will appear in your November payslip. The
meals will take place on the following sites at the below dates and times:
RLI: 11, 12 and 13 December at 12pm and 1.30pm
FGH: 12, 13 and 14 December from 12pm - 2pm
WGH: 11, 12 and 13 December from 12pm - 2pm
RLI – tickets for the Christmas lunch will be available to collect from the restaurant from 27 November – 6
December between 9am and 3.30pm. This year there won’t be a table booking system in place.
WGH – will be taking table bookings this year. They can be done on 28, 29 and 30 November between 9.30am and
11.30am. Tables can only be booked by going down to the restaurants and showing your payslip; telephone
bookings will not be accepted this year.
FGH – tickets for the Christmas lunch will be available to collect from the Catering Office between 4 and 8
December; tickets can only be given by showing your November payslip. This year there won’t be a table booking
system in place.
Cash not cards this Christmas Staff, visitors, and fundraisers support our local hospitals each year by making donations
to Bay Hospitals Charity instead of giving Christmas cards. An alternative is to send a
Christmas message via email, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Let friends know you are
making a difference this year by donating to your local hospitals. You can donate online:

This way you can wish everyone a happy Christmas and make a charitable donation aswell.

Have your say about work in confidence: complete the latest
NHS staff survey UHMB employees will have received a request to contribute to the annual NHS staff
survey. You should have received a paper questionnaire or a link to the survey via
email. This is the single most important survey of staff in the NHS. It influences the
agenda for local and national discussions on issues including partnership working,
pay, recruitment and retention, stress, bullying, workload, motivation and morale.
Trade Unions would encourage all members and staff to complete the survey as honestly and truthfully as
possible. It is vital the survey reflects the views of the entire workforce and that we receive survey data from
areas of high workloads, staff shortages, and where members may be facing stress on a daily basis.
At this stage we have real concerns about the low number of paper questionnaires being completed which
could affect the consistency of the results. The purpose of the survey is to collect staff views about working in
their NHS organisation. The information should then be reviewed by local staff and management sides working
together to identify any particular problems or issues and to come up with a plan to resolve them.
How can I be sure management won’t see my responses?
We know that many staff are concerned about confidentiality and that their individual responses could find their
way back to their manager. To ensure responses remain confidential all participating organisations must employ
an independent survey contractor to administer the survey. UHMB will not have access to the questionnaires or
to any linked personal data such as your name or address. The report is returned by the contractor in summary
form and does not reveal the identity of the staff who have responded.

Our Brilliant Bay Day
More than 80 members of staff from the Trust, our Bay Health and Care Partners and
guests celebrated fantastic staff-led changes at our Brilliant Bay Day last Tuesday at
Castle Green Hotel. The celebration saw outcomes from Wave 7 and 8 Listening into
Action schemes and Improvement work being carried out across our hospitals.
Some of the outcomes included:
A reduction in the length of time it takes to recruit bank workers from an average of
45 days to 24 days
The creation of an admin hub by admin staff working for different divisions, to streamline and standardise
meetings, agenda templates, and documentation
Guests saw a visit from broadcaster Roy Lilley and Dr Terri Porrett from the Academy of Fabulous NHS Stuff.
Roy Lilley, a health policy analyst and commentator on the National Health Service, said: “UHMBT has a massive
amount to be proud of and it is great at sharing what it does with the academy. You are definitely now the envy of
the NHS. The Trust has been through the mill but it hasn’t stopped staff coming to work and wanting to do the
right thing and it hasn’t stopped staff making improvements. You are now and forever magic Morecambe Bay.”

Do you know about the North West Blood Bikers? Have you ever wondered what happens when urgently needed items need moving
between hospitals in the middle of the night?
Hospitals operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but it is just not economical to have a 24
hour transport service. Routine items are transported during normal office hours but there are
occasions at nights and weekends when something needs sending to another hospital
urgently. Pathology samples, patient notes, drugs, surgical instruments, medical
equipment, blood and blood products, may all need to be moved at short notice out of hours.
In the past it was necessary to call out a taxi to complete the journey, incurring substantial
costs for the trust. Since 2013 UHMBT have been able to call on the services of a group of emergency volunteer
bikers who will transport urgently needed items between hospitals free of charge. North West Blood Bikes Lancs
and Lakes provides a free, but professional, voluntary out of hours transport service moving anything that can be
carried by motorcycle between hospitals.
They provide this service through the night, at weekends, and Bank Holidays enabling hospital funding to be better
spent on patient care. They also transport donor breast milk during daytime hours from the milk bank at the Royal
Preston Hospital which they manage on behalf of the NHS.
In the Morecambe Bay area they have seen volunteer numbers increase with 70 riders covering the Lancaster,
Kendal, and Barrow hospitals supported by controllers and fundraisers who live in the area. While this may seem
like a large number of riders the charity is still recruiting - especially in the Barrow area where they need more
volunteers, including fund raisers to help them meet increasing demands and raise much needed funds.
2016 was a record year for the charity which saw 1779 calls responded to in the Bay area - nearly three times the
number dealt with in 2014!
While completing these calls, the riders travelled an estimated 41,000 miles on the way (or nearly 1.5 times around
the world) saving the hospitals in the order of £119,000 in taxi/courier fares.
Furness General is self-sufficient and doesn’t need to call on the services of the blood bikers as much as other
hospitals, so the riders will often be on standby for several shifts before getting a call. However when they do get a
request from Furness it can be very urgent or even an emergency when the blue lights and sirens help to clear the
way along the A590.
The riders never know what they are carrying or get to meet the patients, although one rider learnt that he had
carried urgent samples for his son while another rider carried samples for a fellow rider who was suffering from
chest pains. They are also proud to be able to say, when asked how much they charge the hospitals for this
service, “There is no charge – it’s what we do”

Innovation Awards, to celebrate pioneering and transformational
work in the NHS. It’s free to enter and awards will be presented at
a free event at Preston North End on 8 March.

the Innovation Agency, NIHR CLAHRC NWC and NIHR CRN NWC.

Radiology Cross Bay Study Day was a success The Radiology Cross Bay Study Day was a huge success. The event was organised by
John Finnigan, the Society of Radiographers Union Learning Rep, in order to promote CPD
opportunities and support staff learning. It was attended by a mix of radiographers from all
sites across the Trust and was a good networking opportunity especially in the trip to the
pub afterwards!
There were a wide variety of presentations covering a broad range of topics: a team from
Siemens (the event sponsors) about current and future technologies; speakers from the University about
challenges in education and the world of forensic radiography; specialists in Dentistry from our own Trust with
Dr Hadden and Dr Fisher, Consultant Radiologist Dr Taylor, Reporting Radiographer Craig Anderson and our
PACS manager Emma Jackson. John would like to give a big ‘thank you’ to all attendees, the speakers who
volunteered their time and effort, and to Siemens for funding the food and refreshments.
Foundation Doctor of the Year - congratulations Mrinalini! Congratulations to Mrinalini Dey, Academic Foundation Year 2 Doctor at RLI, who
was awarded ‘Foundation Doctor of the Year’ by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
on 6 November 2017.
Mrinalini was nominated by her colleagues while working in her Lancaster Psychiatry
Placement. Achievements during her rotation included initiating a communication
skills teaching scheme for medical students, completing a multi-centre audit
(currently under review for publication) and earning first prize at the North West Royal
College of Psychiatrists Conference 2016.

Clinical Audit Awareness Week
- #CAAW
Clinical Audit are holding an awareness session to
enable people to find out more information about their
team on Thursday 23 November at FGH and RLI in the
dining rooms between 12-13.30.

Retinue upgrade training dates Users of the Retinue agency staffing booking portal should be aware that an upgraded version of the system has
been developed, and UHMB are planning to implement this on 4 December. All the actions that you need to take
are exactly the same and there is no change in process, current agency staffing in place, or supply chain.
We are in the process of transferring across all of our current data and testing the final pieces that have been
added or changed. Retinue now want to make sure that all users have had a chance to look at the system and
understand any new elements prior to go-live. If you haven’t already, please ensure that you book onto one of the
training sessions hosted by the Retinue training team. These sessions should last no longer than 30 minutes.

'Your concerns are our concerns' PALS received a total of 515 formal complaints in 2016-17, an increase of 32 from the previous
year. The majority of these were with medicine and surgical divisions and related to diagnosis,
treatment, and nursing care. In an attempt to help resolve some of the less complex issues we
need your help!
This is a quest to offer another method of encouraging open communication and transparency to
try to improve the patient/family experience at a very emotive time. And we only get one chance
to get this right! The palliative care team are proposing a communication booklet entitled “Your
concerns are our concerns” that can be signposted to the patient and their families. We envisage this would initially
be for patients who are GSF Red or end of life.
If they have any concerns, complaints or compliments about treatment or care and do not feel they have had
opportunity for discussion or feel they have not been heard, they can complete the form. This can then be handed
to a member of staff to be actioned.
Once actioned by the health care professional these completed booklets will then be sent to PALS to be recorded
on Ulysses, even if the problems have been resolved, require escalation, or are purely complimentary. This is
another way of trying to resolve issues at ward level but if this is not achieved they can be directed to PALS. The
booklets will soon be available from the palliative care team at FGH and on all the wards at RLI in the Palliative
Care Information Folder, which are shortly to be distributed. Further supplies can be obtained from Kathryn Hayes;

Book recommendation After the women and alcohol event held
at the RLI in October, Anna Sequeira, an
Occupational Therapist at FGH has
recommended a book to those who
attended or find the subject interesting / relatable. The
book is called ‘Kick the drink…easily!’ by Jason Vale.
