Wall Street starts 2020 at record
levels on China stimulus, trade
hopes: - Wall Street's major indexes
began the new year at record levels on
Thursday, as fresh stimulus from Beijing
to prop up its slowing economy added to
optimism fueled by easing trade
tensions and an improving global
outlook.
Dollar Rebounds from 5-Month Low:
- The dollar kicked off the year in Europe
with a mild recovery from its lowest
level since July, with risk assets starting
the year in favor after President Donald
Trump confirmed he will sign a
preliminary trade deal with China on
Jan. 15. Trump’s announcement
removed much of the lingering
uncertainty about the so-called ‘phase-1’
deal and also reinforced hopes that
Trump’s need for re-election will keep an
economically damaging trade war with
China relatively contained over the
coming months.
Gold Hits Three-Month High as
Money Flows out of Dollar: - Gold
prices rose to their highest in over three
months in the first full session of 2020
on Thursday, ironically supported by a
broad risk-on move in markets that saw
global stocks rise. Gold has also risen in
parallel with U.S. Treasury bonds, with
which it competes for the attention of
safety-seeking investors, in that time.
While bullion has risen 2%, the 10-year
note has been bid up, pushing the yield
down to 1.86%.
OPEC Output Falls as Gulf Nations
Step Up Delivery of Oil Cuts: - OPEC’s
output declined last month as several
Persian Gulf producers stepped up their
implementation of cutbacks aimed at
balancing global oil markets.
