K-2 NEWS

We have had a wonderful two weeks in K-2. Year 2

have participated in ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ and

enjoyed cleaning up around our school. Pictured

below are Lucy, Skye-Rose, Kaydee and Aaaliyah

doing their bit in cleaning up the school.

We have also learnt about mistakes and how mak-

ing mistakes helps our brains grow. Mrs Clifton

loves coming into 2L teaching the students about

making mistakes and that mistakes are a valuable

part or our learning.

Pictured below is some hard work from students

Kayden and Lucy from class 2L. It shows that

learning makes our brains grow.

SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES

There are many opportunities for our students to

participate and compete in varying sports, usually

through the NSW Primary School Sports Associa-

tion (PSSA).

It can be through an inter-school knockout compe-

tition or at the Hunter Trials. Students also have

opportunities to gain selection at a higher level.

Students have great experiences attending such

events and get to meet some new friends with

similar interests from other schools.

Pictured below are Kurtis, Matilda, Kaleb, Cruz,

James, Tianna and Aaliyah showing us just a few

of the sports that students can represent in for our

school.

STAGE 3 NEWS

Yesterday Chatham High School staff visited with

our Year 6 students, the first of many transition ac-

tivities that are being planned for this year. All stu-

dents were given an expression of interest applica-

tion for parents to inform us of their child's potential

High School in 2021. I ask that these forms are re-

turned as soon as possible.

Year 6 have been very excited to vote on a choice

of designs for their Year 6 shirt. Students in the

next week will try sample shirts on for sizing, whilst

the production company organises our design. Fur-

ther information will be sent home for you to order

your child's shirt in the coming weeks.

Good luck to our girl's cricket team which is playing

today. I am so impressed with these girls putting

their hand up to have a go, as most of the girls

have not played cricket before.

Congratulations to Cruz and Blake (pictured on

page 3), who were commended on their sportsman-

ship at a recent PSSA trial. We are very proud of

you boys!

THE EFFECTS OF PASSIVE SMOKING

(extract from ‘I Can Quit”)

WHAT IS PASSIVE SMOKING?

Passive smoking is when someone breathes in the

combination of smoke exhaled by a smoker plus

smoke from the end of a burning cigarette or cigar.

This smoke is also referred to as second-hand

smoke or environmental tobacco smoke.

HOW DANGEROUS IS PASSIVE SMOKING?

The scientific evidence about passive smoking

shows us just how dangerous second-hand smoke

really is.

Here are the facts about passive smoking:

Non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke

have an increased risk of lung cancer;

Non-smokers who live with a smoker are 20%

-30% more likely to develop lung cancer;

Passive smoking can cause premature death

in non-smokers;

Passive smoking increases the risk of coro-

nary heart disease by 25-40% - almost the

same level as a smoker;

Second-hand smoke contains more than

7000 chemicals, with 69 cancer-causing

chemicals; and

There is no known safe level of exposure to

second-hand smoke.

Did you know that your health can start improving

as soon as you quit smoking?

EAT WELL - LEARN WELL

Pictured below is the very healthy

lunchbox of Year 1 student Blake. It

is great to see some whole fruit and

vegetables to provide vital nutrients

for his growing body and mind.

CELEBRATE YOUR CHILD’S UNIQUENESS

(extract from ‘Kidz With Special Needs’)

Just like a snowflake or a fingerprint, every child is unique in their own special way. Every child has a unique

way of feeling, thinking and interacting with others. Some children are shy, while others are outgoing; some are

active, while others are calm; some are fretful, while others are easy-going. As a loving and nurturing parent, it’s

your job to encourage them to embrace their uniqueness and celebrate their individual qualities.

Allow your child to express themselves through their interests. They may find a creative outlet in theatre, danc-

ing or art, or they may be exceptionally talented in the sciences. Encourage them to embrace what they like to

do, what interests them and what makes them happy. Help them realise that they don’t need to worry about be-

ing ‘like everyone else’.

Teach your child to make positive choices, and praise them for good deeds, behaviours and positive traits they

possess. Encourage them to become actively involved in their community and introduce them to activities that

promote a sense of cooperation and accomplishment.
