books.

Bell work: Draw a picture of a key event that happened in chapter 17.   

Class Discussion

How did Brian feel when he dropped the hatchet? How would you have felt if you saw the dead pilot? Did Brain react in an

appropriate way? Why/why not?

• What feelings must Brian have felt when he finally found the pack?

• What are the objects Brian finds in the survival pack?

• What is the usefulness of each object?

Writing Task

Write a diary entry imagining you are Brian on the day he retrieves the survival pack. Remember to focus on his feelings and

thoughts.

• What did you think of the ending of the novel? Are you disappointed/happy/sad/surprised? Why?

• Other editions of Hatchet don’t include the epilogue. Why do you think Paulsen chose to include it in this version? Do you think the story works better with or without it? Why?

Paired Activity

Write a conversation between Brian and his group of friends on his first day back at school. Write it

in script format.
