“We didn’t finish in the sec-ond half like I thought weshould,” Asher said. “We misseda few layups and quick shots.Between the layups and themissed free throws down thestretch, your lead just shrinks asyou go from possession to pos-

session. But that’s something weneed to work on.”

but at the same time we’re getting goodshots. Maybe we’re missing them, butwe’re getting good shots.”

St. Cecilia junior Shanelle Farmer hada game-high 16 points on 7-of-14shooting. Morgan Nikkila finished thegame with 10 points. Kaitlyn Ernst andOlivia Thomas both recorded sevenpoints.

Senior Kaitlin Kumke led Blue Hill (3-1) with 12 points, while fellow seniorJordan Atwater had 11 points.

Kile said his team’s game plan was toslow down Atwater and keep the Bobcatoffense off balance.

“We wanted to limit (Atwater). She’s agood point guard for them and she doesa nice job of doing the things theywant her to do,” Kile said. “We mixedthings up by doubling and not dou-bling — it was just a case of trying tokeep them off balance.

“I thought we did a real nice job ofthat in the first half, but give themcredit for a nice run in the third quarterthat cut into our lead and made it sin-gle digits at one point. Give our girlscredit for bouncing back and puttingthem away.”

The Hawkettes dominated the firsthalf, taking a 30-16 lead into halftime. But the Bobcats came back, opening the

third quarter on a 9-2 run to cut thelead to seven. But St. Cecilia closed thequarter on its own 9-2 run, with Farmerscoring five of the nine points.

The fourth quarter picked up rightwhere the third had left off, with the

Hawkettes scoring the first eight points.St. Cecilia outscored the Bobcats 14-6 inthe fourth to seal the victory.

Blue Hill had been playing solid bas-ketball, winning its first three gamesand its last two by 20 or more points.Streff said how his team plays the nextfew games will determine if this losswas a setback or just a bump in theroad.

Kile said his Hawkettes will continueto get better as the season progresses.

“I think we just have to keep gettingsome experience for these girls andbuilding on what we’ve started to do,”Kile said. “We’re seeing them applythings in games that we’ve been work-ing on in practice. And that’s exactlywhat you want to see — them try toexecute the things we do in practiceand just go out there and try to makeplays. Some games you’re going tomake them and some games you’re not.

KENESAW — The Kenesaw boys bas-ketball team dropped to 1-3 Saturdayafter losing 42-37 in a defensive battle athome to the Loup City Red Raiders.

“You give up 42 points, you shouldwin the ballgame, if that’s all you giveup,” Kenesaw coach Jack Einrem said.“Our kids played hard and played prettygood defense I thought.”

Kenesaw led 24-19 at one point in thethird quarter after an early ZaneWoodman 3-pointer and a DaltonBender jump shot. But Kenesaw failed toscore the rest of the quarter, as Loup City(3-2) went on a 12-0 run that went intothe fourth quarter.

“We kind of lost our way on offense,”Einrem said. “We tried a couple of differ-ent things tonight, because I know theyscouted us and it worked pretty well fora while, but then they made adjustments

and they did a little better job in thatstretch than we did.”

Kenesaw fell behind 11-4 in the firstquarter but then went on an 8-0 run totake a 12-11 lead.

The Blue Devils pushed that lead to17-13 midway through the second quar-ter, but a couple of 3-pointers by LoupCity’s Mitchell Higgins made the score19-all at half time.

“They started shooting the ball a cou-ple of times a little better,” Einrem said.“We had a hand in their face, but theyjust made shots — that’s a good shootingbasketball team normally.”

The Blue Devils shot better than 63percent from inside the 3-point line forthe game, but connected on only 1-of-93-point attempts.

“Until we start believing that we’vegot to go inside first and then outside,we’re not going to shoot the ball verywell from out there,” Einrem said. “I

think once we get that figured out, we’llget things straightened out.”

With the loss, the Blue Devils havenow lost three in a row after they defeat-ed Blue Hill in their first game of the sea-son. Einrem attributed the team’s recentinjuries as one of the main reasons for itscurrent losing streak.

“It’s just a matter of getting some kidsback and getting our chemistry back alittle bit,” Einrem said. “The kids thathave filled in have done a great job, butit’s not the same chemistry that we havewith Tyler (Schnitzler) and Devon(Burr).”
