For most people, New Year’s resolutions are soon forgotten or abandoned.Dan Hause and Tammy Loew will be putting a big one on the line this year,though, when they exchange wedding vows amidst some 800 witnesses

and the excitement of the sixth annual New Year’s Eve Community Celebration indowntown Hastings. The wedding, previewed with ornament and tinsel by Tammy’sson, Pat Loew, earlier this week, is scheduled for the middle of the intersection atState and Jefferson streets at 10 p.m. The ceremony will be a bit before the NewYear’s official celebration but will be a highlight of the evening and will makeHastings’ New Year’s Eve celebration one that may be historic. In addition to wed-ding bells and the customary light and sound display as the ball drops, the eveningwill include a midnight run for anyone who wants to add to a festive night of HollyTrolley rides, live music, ice sculptures and children’s activities. Happy New Year

1. 2014 where did you go? And as I was thinking about typing that ques-

tion I went to 2013. Where does the time go? Seems like each year goes

faster but as they say, it’s part of life. It’s that time of year when we look

back and remember the things that we did or saw happen around us and

realize we have much to be thankful for and realize we made it through the

difficult times. It’s sure good to have family, friends, and a community that

is just what we want our hometown to be. Hastings keeps changing and

growing but our heart of caring and service remains the same, especially

here on South Jefferson Street in the heart of downtown Hastings. 2015 is

coming right in this week and we will be here all year to serve you any way

we can. Happy New Year!

2. If we get some snow over winter break, we can go sledding at the

Pierce Cedar Creek Institute December 22, 2014 through January 2, 2015

from 9a.m. to 5p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s free and open to all who

would like to enjoy the sledding hill and trails through the woods. They are

located at 701 W. Cloverdale Road, Hastings. A day out in the cold sledding

or walking on the trails would make a great winter day especially if followed

by a large hot chocolate, of course!

3. Are you looking for something mysterious to do New Year’s Eve? We have

an idea for you because they say…he’s there….the Phantom of the Opera.

The Emmanuel Episcopal Church Choir is putting on a concert version of

The Phantom of the Opera. It starts at 7:30 p.m. December 31 at the

Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 315 W. Center in Hastings. There is no

charge for the concert but there will be an opportunity for donations.

4. After you have experienced the Phantom, you can go to several different

locations for New Year’s Eve Ball Drop. They are having one in Hastings,

in Delton, and in Middleville. Each one has different festivities and are fam-

ily friendly. The Hastings Ball Drop has become a growing tradition with the

festivities starting at 9p.m. The program starts at 9p.m. with Emcee Dave

McIntyre and DJ Jon Anderson, The Deep Fried Pickle Project band will pres-

ent live music, and the children’s activities are in the warming tent. There

will even be a wedding ceremony in the intersection by the Walldorf at

10p.m. Our Mayor Frank Campbell starts the ball dropping at 11:59p.m. and

at midnight there will be a sound and light display. Be ready to sing the tra-

ditional “Auld Land Syne” and then be ready to run or at least walk for the

first “unofficial” 5K of 2015. Throughout the evening there will also be ice

sculpture carving in front of Second Hand Corners and, of course, there will

be food to eat available at multiple places. It sounds like one of our best par-

ties of the year to me!

5. You can also celebrate New Year’s Eve in Hastings at the

6th annual Uptown New Year’s Eve Ball as you ring in the New Year with

style at the Walldorf Ballroom high atop Downtown Hastings. The evening

starts with a bar and appetizers at 7p.m., dinner at 8p.m. and music from

8:30 to 11:30p.m. The Thornapple Jazz Orchestra will be providing music

for the evening playing big band jazz. Reservations are required and the

suggested attire is semi-formal. Tickets are $30 single, $60 a couple. For

more information or to make reservations call 269-945-4400. The Bistro

and Pub will also be open for regular dining.

6. Watch the Hastings Mystery Theater every Thursday and Friday at 7p.m.

on the Hastings public access channel on the WOW cable system. Enjoy

these black and white mystery movies from the 1930's and 1940's. See

Charlie Chan, the Saint, Hildegarde Withers, Mr. Moto, Bulldog Drummond,

the Lone Wolf and others bring the bad guys to justice.

7. At The General Store, we would like to thank you for the warm welcome

you have given us in our new store. We have enjoyed showing you our new

look and our new merchandise. We are even having that great problem of

having to reorder and for that we are very thankful. This week we have

added soaps and lotions, some of which are organic, from the San Francisco

Soap Company. We have also received a shipment of hot sauce, seasonings,

and dips and chips of various flavorings and heat sure to warm you all the

way down if you are into spice. If you enjoy puzzles, we still have quite a

selection for the cold snowy days which must be coming since this is still

winter in Michigan. And a last minute addition that just arrived, the Comic

Books are here! We have had people coming in looking for them and they

finally arrived this afternoon. We have more changes in different areas com-

ing and more merchandise to add, so please keep coming in. We just love

to show you around!
