National Day Of Action Against Bullying And Violence

Our school has registered for the National Day of Action on March 16th

and teachers are busy preparing activities for the day with their

classes. All students are invited to wear different socks, different

ribbons etc to support conversations about acceptance of difference.

In a letter received this week from our Prime Minister, Malcom

Turnbull, it is clearly stated that “Bullying and violence has no place in

Australia”. He also acknowledges “While schools and educators have

a key role to play in tackling bullying, we also know the important role

parents and families play”. I would like to thank the support that many

NAPLAN

NAPLAN organisation for Year 3 and 5 is underway and I would recommend parents read the information

included in this newsletter. Some schools have been selected to complete the NAPLAN assessments online.

For 2018, we will continue to complete the paper based assessments. We are however involved in a current

research study involving supporting students to learn through digital media which is a part of the Department

of Education’s commitment to supporting students to be prepared for this transition to computer based

assessments. If you have any concerns regarding your child completing the NAPLAN assessments please

contact either Mr Scott or Mr Morris.

Scripture/Ethics

Our scripture program is due to commence next week. We have done our best to allocate students into

their first preference however we do not have enough ethics teachers to cover all groups at this stage.

These groups have been formed and are ready to commence when the ethics program secures more

volunteers.

North Coast Swimmers

Congratulations to all of our swimmers who have competed this week at the North Coast Carnival. We are

looking forward to hearing the results. I know that many of our swimmers have achieved personal bests

and they should be very proud of their effort.

Hastings Secondary College Connect Evening

Thankyou to all of our students and families who ventured out on Tuesday evening (despite the rain!) and

attended the College Connect evening. It was an excellent presentation and highlighted the quality

opportunities afforded to students at both the Westport and Port Macquarie campuses. What a treat it was

to listen to former students Rusie Southon and Mia Hopkins speaking so confidently about their experiences

so far in year 7. I would like to thank Hastings Secondary College Executive Principal Kylie Owen, Principals

Ian Ross and Lorraine Haddon and their fabulous team for their presentation.

UPDATED OCCUPATION INFORMATION

Future school funding relies on information gained from student records. It is crucial that we have accurate

records not only for emergency contact and communication purposes but also so we receive the correct

allocation of Government funding for our students. If your occupation / employment has changed in the last

18 months we ask you to please complete the yellow form that came home this week and return it to the

office as soon as possible. This will allow us to have our records updated in readiness for the information to

be extracted at the start of Term 2.

CLEAN UP SCHOOL DAY

The playground looked quite clean on Monday when around 30 students embarked on the school’s Clean

Up Day in conjunction with Clean Up Australia. Weren’t they surprised to find how much rubbish they

were able to collect in a short time from different areas of the playground and rainforest. The students

then worked together to do a 'visual waste audit’ - sorting the waste into different piles to determine what

sort of rubbish we have at school. They did find a few strange objects, like one thong, one sock and two

corks, but most of our rubbish was non-recyclable single use plastic like chip packets and snap lock bags.

It has also been noted that a lot of little packets from snacks are being discarded within 5 minutes walk of

the school gates (probably kids eating snacks on the way home). And one for the parents – cigarette butts

were found around the gate on Braemar Drive and along the top of the school on Waniora Parkway.

Thanks to the Environment Ministers & Mrs Mansfield for organising the event, the parent helpers and

student volunteers who took on this challenge with such enthusiasm.

2018 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

(NAPLAN)

LETTER TO PARENTS

In May 2018 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in

Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy

and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be

used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of

achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will

be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held

securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 15-17 May 2018.

TUESDAY 15 MAY WEDNESDAY 16 MAY THURSDAY 17 MAY

Language Conventions (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

Writing test

Reading test Numeracy test

In the numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there

will be one numeracy test with two parts: Part A calculator is allowed and Part B where calculators are not to be used.

For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

Friday 18 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day.

Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:

• are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or

• have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to

participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal

level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests

are available to meet the needs of individual students.

Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a

parent or carer consent form must be signed.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in

consultation with the school principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form

must be signed.

Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your

child’s participation in NAPLAN.

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support
