“ You have to go to school if you want a decent life”.

15-year-old Pan from Cambodia lost his parents when he was 11 years old. He had nowhere to live, and no money to buy food or clothes. Pan was forced to leave school and sell rice on the streets to earn money.

CAFOD has helped find Pan a safe place to live. He’s back at school, and excited about his future.

“When I started lessons I was so happy! I felt like a normal boy, doing normal things. Every day I feel lucky.”

Abdi is 17 and lives in Korogocho, one of the largest slums in Kenya.

“The biggest challenges living in Korogocho are drugs, thieves, lack of jobs, and people not knowing how to boost their lives.”

St John’s Sports Society offers young people a chance to escape these challenges. It gives boys and girls the chance to play anything from netball to tae kwon do.

The Society helps them have fun – but it also teaches them confidence, teamwork, tolerance and discipline, and promotes peace.

Kim, 16, lives in Cambodia. Her father died of an HIV-related illness, and her mother is HIV positive. She has faced discrimination and bullying.

“When one person discriminates they pass this behaviour to the next person. Soon a whole community stops talking to you.”

CAFOD supports Kim in learning to dance so she can earn a living to support the family. It’s also a way to escape the challenges of her life.

“Dancing comes naturally to me. I enjoy getting lost in the music.”
