HARU MATSURI 2009KimonoAre you tired of the snow? With the weather forecasters predicting huge amounts of snow for the winter of 2008/2009, everyone will be sure to want a change by the beginning of March. The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) can guarantee that spring will arrive on March 7 and 8, 2009! The JCCC will be opening their doors to everyone as they celebrate a weekend filled with activities, entertainment and exhibits at Haru Matsuri 2009!! This year’s theme is Kimono. For many people this traditional costume is often associated with the image of the Japanese woman. However, few people may realize that kimono is a word that encompasses a huge range of clothing from the style to the materials that are used to construct them. We hope to show our visitors a variety of kimono through the costumes of our entertainers, displays and demonstrations. The JCCC Heritage Committee will also be featuring a display of Netuske. Netsuke are small toggles, traditionally carved out of ivory, that are used to secure a pouch or container to the obi (sash) of a kimono. Haru Matsuri will also include Japanese arts and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana (flower arranging), Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Origami (paperfolding) and Sumi-e (brush painting). The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign up for our Spring programmes. The JCCC’s martial artists will demonstrate the techniques of “The Way of the Warrior” through Aikido, Judo, Karate, Iaido, Naginata, and Kendo. For entertainment, there will be odori (traditional Japanese dancing) by JCCC traditional dance groups Ayame-Kai and Sakura-Kai, Koto by the Toronto Chikushikai and Taiko (Japanese drumming). Japanese cuisine will also be available in the food court. As always the JCCC and Kobayashi Hall will be colourfully and elaborately decorated to welcome the spring and the long-awaited close of the winter season. Festival guests entering the Centre will be greeted by an elaborate display of Hina Matsuri Dolls.Gather your family and friends and come to the JCCC, and join us as we celebrate the arrival of Spring!

Saga no Gabai Baa-chanA Heart-warming Tale ofa “Super” GrannyGabai Granny is based on the bestseller Saga No Gabai Baachan (Gabai Granny from Saga), which is penned by comedian Shimada Yoshichi as he recounts his childhood memories of growing up under the care of his grandmother. Starring the evergreen Yoshiyuki Kazuko in the title role, it tells the story of a young boy Akihiro, who was sent against his wishes and to his surprise, to the countryside to brought up by his grandmother. All the while his mother (played by Kudoh Youki) struggles as a bar-hostess. To a young boy, journeying to a faraway place, and living in conditions alien to him, definitely makes him miss home. Worse, he is not familiar with his grandmother and her ways too. The merits of the story, and the lessons learnt from Granny, are both touching and subtle. Yoshiyuki's earnest and heartwarming portrayal of a Granny who truly cares, and loves unconditionally, is the heart of the film. There is much to be learnt from her philosophy on thrift, though when it comes to spending, she goes for nothing but the best. But possibly the best lesson that can be learnt from her, is to always look at the positive side of adversity, to never be beaten down. She imparts excellent values, positive thinking and reasoning peppered with comedy, you can't help but feel endeared to her. Love, friendship, good advice, and plenty of everything else makes Gabai Granny a delight to watch. The film also features Ken Ogata – the great Japanese actor who passed away just last year – as the local Tofu seller. Date: Thursday February 26, 2009 Time: 7:00pm

Creative Writing Workshop Use your writing power to solve any challenge in your life! Part I Jpals "Nihongo Program" will hold a very interesting workshop as part of Japanese program with a guest instructor on Sunday April 19, 2009, from 9:30am to 12:30pm, Ms. Emiko Shuen who taught Creative Writing as a T.A. at York University for 8 years. No matter what your age, gender, creed, ethnicity or affiliation, it is a fact that "bumps" appear along the amazing journey called "Life". These "bumps" can be viewed as "problems" or they can be viewed as "challenges". The first point of view just leads to yet more problems and an increasing sense of helplessness, while the other point of view enriches and empowers the actual person, making him/her increasingly stable and available to enjoy the wondrous benefits of daily life. If you are interested to:- know what you fully think and feel about something- gain further clarity over not only your thoughts but also your emotions- experience your own unique power through the tool of writing- acquire a few tools and skills that can enhance your ability to resolve any "challenge"- be in an environment with other like-minded individualsthen this course is for you! The class will be taught in Japanese and you can chose any language that suits you best for writing and it is a part of series of 3 workshops. Each session is independent but cumulative. So bring your favourite notebook, pen, small blanket and snack and enjoy this rare opportunity to discover yourself. Tea and snacks will be also prepared by JCCC. Kobayashi Hall was the place to be for New Year’s celebrations at the JCCC.December 31 in the Kobayashi Hall, was the place to be to ring in the New Year Eve with dinner and dancing. Nearly 170 revelers crowed the room, dressed in beautiful gowns, cocktail dresses, suits and tuxedos. Once again the Kobayashi hall was transformed into a moonlit winter night with twinkling lights and “frosty” trees. The evening started with a delicious buffet by Calvert’s Catering that featured prime rib roast. Once dinner ended, our favourite disc jockey, Ralph Yuan had the crowd on their feet. The elegant dancers floated around the room amid the sparkling reflections off the mirrored ball. Midnight brought the arrival of 2009 to the sounds Auld Lang Syne and the sights of multi-coloured balloons cascading down from the ceiling. The next afternoon Kobayashi Hall was again the place to be for the annual Shin-nen Kai New Year’s Banquet. The more than 250 attendees celebrated the start of a new year with an incredible evening of fine dining and entertainment. Chef Kunio Ishii of Toriichi Catering outdid himself again in preparing the star of the show. The buffet was an incredible array of traditional o-sechi ryori (new year’s dishes) including nishime, zoni, sashimi, sushi and so much more. Emcee Sid Ikeda got the crowd singing to a few tunes accompanied by his harmonica. The night also featured a special performance by the Richard Whiteman Trio. The JCCC thanks the organizing committees for all their great work in making each year’s celebrations better. Mark your calendars now, so that you can be a part of next year’s celebrations too.

KohakuDecember also saw the 30th anniversary of the Toronto Kohaku Utagassen. True to form, and in keeping with its rich tradition, the evening was a highly enjoyable showcase of the great wellspring of musical talent in the Japanese Community in Toronto. The huge crowd enjoyed every moment of this special evening. Thanks go to the Geino Aikokai for another spectacular success.

Nobuo Kubota Exhibit “New Calligraphy – Works on Paper”

Nobuo Kubota is an artist/musician/vocalist living in Toronto. While performing with the artists improvisational band CCMC in the 1980s, Kubota encountered the sound poetry group. The Four Horsemen. He was inspired to explore his own voice as an art form and since then, his singing style has become a hybrid form with influences from jazz, scat singing and Buddhist chanting.

In 2004, he began to develop a calligraphic and notational system of writing sonic/sound scores. This show is the result of that investigation. The exhibit will be on display in the JCCC Heritage Gallery until Sunday March 22, 2009.Gallery hours: 10am - 5pm Mon- Fri, 10am - 4pm Sat & Sun

Jpals

JCCC Room Named in Honour of Nisei Sumi-e Artist Kazuo Hamasaki

Kazuo Hamasaki’s technical knowledge frees him and en-ables him to experiment and so achieve a new vision of his Canadian landscape. This is in keeping with the original purpose of the Sumi-e painters who rebelled against the stiff academic style of professional artists and adopted a new, more lyrical style, related to the spirit and express of the Nanga School.— The New Canadian, October 21, 1977

Sumi-e/watercolour Master Kazuo Richard Hamasaki passed away on September 17th, 2005, in his 80th year, but his art and name will live on at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.

On Monday December 15th, 2008, family and friends of the late Kazuo Hamasaki gathered at the JCCC for a dedi-cation ceremony, which renamed the Sky Room to the Ka-zuo Hamasaki Room. The Room is located on the second floor, just around the corner from the newly built stairs and elevator. It now displays prints of two of his water-colour paintings and a Hawaiian deity woodcarving pre-sented to Hamasaki by the Royal Hawaiian Band, and do-nated by Mas and Miyo Hamasaki.

A special weekend exhibition of his works was also held back in November 2006 at the JCCC, to honour his final wish.

Kaz Hamasaki was born and educated in Prince Rupert, B.C., interned at Slocan Valley, and moved to Toronto after the war to reunite with his family. He pursued a career as a dental ceramist and meanwhile studied Japanese cul-ture and sumi-e painting. He studied the Nanga School of Japanese Painting and received his diploma and artist name, ‘Shin-Sen.’ His paintings have been exhibited across Canada, Hawai’i and Brazil and have also been document-ed in art magazines across the world.

As Ken Noma of the Heritage Committee of the JCCC told, “his paintings of nature speaks of the timelessness of hope and renewal and the innate beauty in solitude.”

Hamasaki is known to have taken an active role in the de-velopment and establishment of the Society of Canadian Artists and was elected President for two terms. He is also remembered for his love for Hawaii and karaoke.

In his dedication speech, Ken Noma expressed that the Centre is honoured to have a permanent collection of Hamasaki’s paintings that will be enjoyed by all. He an-nounced that some of these paintings will be exhibited at the Woodstock Gallery (in Woodstock, Ont.) on Saturday, March 7. Heritage Committee curator Bryce Kanbara of Hamilton has met with the family to produce a catalogue, and they hope that it will travel to B.C. in the near future.

“Although Kaz was a bachelor, he has left us his paintings – his children. All Japanese Canadians are ‘Watari Dori’ – birds of passage. Many, like Kaz, never visited Japan, but feel a spiritual connection to their ancestral land. With the donation of his remaining paintings and the dedication of the room, we will finally honour his legacy as a Nikkei art-ist,” said Noma.

Hamasaki’s nephew Gary Hamasaki also gave a brief speech and noted, “We are very fortunate that the Cultural Centre has decided to further recognize the Japanese Canadian heritage that Kaz has left behind through his paintings…His name and art will live on and guests who use this room will be able to read about him and see his art. Eventually more of his art and cherished memories will be able to be seen within the Heritage Resource Centre.”

The room was unveiled by Hamasaki’s nephews Gary Hamasaki and Ken Yoshida, and JCCC president Marty Ko-bayashi.
