Kania, Vice Principal October 8, 2018 Dear Parents and Guardians, It is hard to believe we are already into our second month of the school year! The transformation of warm summer days to cool fall days, filled with the changing colour of the leaves, seemed to occur rather quickly. It is wonderful to see new and returning students making positive connections with their peers within their class and school community. School routines have been established and our days are noticeably filled with engagement around a variety of meaningful learning experiences. It is such a pleasure to return to be part of a school community that collectively demonstrates great passion for caring for kids and provides a welcoming feel to those who come to visit! We recently had the opportunity to welcome parents and students at our Welcome Back BBQ hosted by the PAC. A great time was had by all connecting over dinner and playing together. Thank you to all of our parents and volunteers who made this such an enjoyable event. Working with students to develop their strengths and support them in reaching their full potential is what it’s all about in education. This year, we will continue to work together to create the space for all students to learn while focusing on our school goals in the area of social emotional learning and the implementation of the renewed curriculum. The renewed curriculum is an opportunity to redesign what we do in school, yet it’s important to recognize the curriculum as the vehicle rather than the destination. Living and learning are synonymous and it’s exciting to see that the renewed curriculum also has the goal of bringing the real world to the classroom. We look forward to continuing to explore how to invite and support students in learning to think critically and produce creatively in collaboration with others. Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe we are already into our second month of the school year!

Student Emergency Release Forms All elementary schools in the district will have a Controlled Student Release

on Thursday, October 17 at 1:30pm. Parents/guardians or their listed emergency contact designate will need to come to the school to pick up their children. Children will be with their classroom teacher and will only be released to parents/guardians or listed emergency contact designates once their show photo ID to school staff. We will start with an earthquake drill, followed by the evacuation and Controlled Student Release exercise. Therefore, it is imperative that parents complete the Student Emergency Release Form on the Parent Portal as soon as possible.

Terry Fox Run Needless to say, Terry Fox is one of Canada’s greatest heroes. His courage and determination has

inspired others to make a significant difference in the lives of people. He dreamed of a world without cancer and in 1980, with one leg having been amputated, he embarked on a cross-Canada run to raise money and awareness for cancer. Since his run in 1980, over 650 million dollars has been raised for cancer research.

On Friday, September 27th, Harry Hooge held its annual Terry Fox Run. Students, staff and parents ran and walked to keep Terry’s dream alive…a world without cancer. We honoured and celebrated Terry Fox by paying tribute to those who are close to us who have been impacted by cancer. The students and staff of Harry Hooge Elementary have a long tradition of participation in the Terry Fox Walk/Run. To date we have raised tens of thousands of dollars for innovative cancer research. We are very proud of the contribution we have made to this cause! Thank you to Ms. Ewald for organizing this year’s Terry Fox event. Terry Fox Runs are an important part of cancer research funding. We will provide an update in our next newsletter to share our fundraising accomplishment.

Fire Prevention Week During Fire Prevention Week, all students in kindergarten through grade 3 received a booklet with activities to teach them about preventing home fires and escape planning with their family. Firefighters will deliver the booklets to all elementary schools in Maple Ridge. Once booklet activities are completed, teachers will give students an entry form to take home for a parent's signature which can then be submitted to enter in a draw for a laptop computer. From the same entry forms, the Maple Ridge Fire Department selects one boy and one girl to be "Fire Chief for a Day." Please visit https://www.mapleridge.ca/430/Fire-Prevention-Week for information about more events happening during Fire Safety Prevention week in Maple Ridge.

Orange Shirt Day Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date for Orange Shirt Day was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Staff and students at Harry Hooge recognized Orange Shirt Day on Monday, September 30th. (www.orangeshirtday.org) PAC News Our next PAC meeting of the year is on Tuesday, October 8th at 7:00 PM in the school library. Parking Challenges We appreciate how challenging it is to find a parking space in the surrounding area during peak drop off and pick up times. We ask for your cooperation in respecting the speed limits and “No Parking” signs in our own parking lot and on the surrounding streets. There are many children in the area and we want to ensure our neighboring roads are safe for everyone. Please remember that the parking lot is reserved for staff and ensure you enter and exit the drive thru area in one direction without

stopping in the drive thru lane. Please allow for extra time for drop off and pick up and slow down and drive safely. Kindness and patience can make all the difference in these situations. Wheel Safety It’s great to see so many students walking and riding to school on our dry fall weather days. Please ensure your child brings a lock to keep their bicycle or scooter secure at our outdoor bike racks. We also want to make sure students are riding bicycles and scooters safely and helmets are worn. Students are not permitted to ride their bicycles, skateboards or scooters on school grounds during the highly congested times from 8:00 am - 2:45 pm. We ask that during these busy times, students walk their wheels. If students have heelies, they should have a change of shoes for inside school. Healthy Living Live 5-2-1-0 is a simple, easy to remember message to help kids and families adopt healthy habits. We know that hearing a consistent message supported by a healthy community environment is important. By bringing community stakeholders together, Live 5-2-1-0 helps build partnerships and opportunities to create healthy environments where kids can eat well and be active every day.

How can Live 5-2-1-0 help communities to work together?

• Promoting a shared, consistent message across a community engages stakeholders in every sector.

• Providing clear goals for kids and families to live healthy every day, AND a framework of action for local community leaders to make changes to their programs, policies, and environments so that it is easier for kids to achieve these goals.

• Offering a common, over-arching message that ties local efforts together across the community. Kids see a consistent message everywhere they go, and community partners are part of a collaborative effort.

The Redesigned Curriculum:

Personal Awareness and Responsibility

hy is personal awareness and responsibility so important to a child’s education? Personal awareness and responsibility is a core competency integrated into all areas of learning in the curriculum. When a student is personally aware and responsible, their sense of self-worth and confidence grow as

they develop skills to ensure their well-being. Students learn how to set goals, regulate their emotions and stress, express their needs, and seek help when needed. When students understand how their choices affect their educational, emotional, and social well-being, they recognize that they have a personal responsibility for their future. For more information about the curriculum, visit https://www.sd42.ca/new-curriculum/

Coming in November – Compassion.
