Spring, the best season in Florida. Time
to open the windows and enjoy the
fresh air. It’s that time of year when we
have cool nights, warm days and lower
humidity. With our frosty nights in
January and February
our plants turned brown
but now the new growth
has started and you can
actually see them
turning greener. It’s also
the time of year when
you’ll invariably see
somebody trying to
balance an egg on its
end, still believing the
old stories that you can
balance an egg on end during the
equinox. The first official day of spring
is March 20th so, in the inimitable
words of Robin Williams, let’s party!
Check out the calendar for all the fun
things going on this month in Spokes.
Our luncheon on March 14th will
feature Harry Havery from Sebring,
Florida. Harry will present an
entertaining and highly unusual
program of songs we all know and love.
It’s a program like no other – you don’t
want to miss it and I guarantee you
won’t forget it. How about trying out
Bunco or Shanghai or Maj Jongg? And
don’t forget Casual Cooking, Dining In,
Out to Lunch Bunch or Spokes On The
Go. So much to do! Check out the info
on these activities further on in the
newsletter.
There’s lots of work to do to run Spokes
and all the work is done
by volunteers. There’s
only three more months
in our Spokes year and
the nominating
committee is searching
for volunteers who are
wishing and wanting and
willing to be on the
Spokes board next year.
There are positions
available. We need a
newsletter editor and assistant, an
activities chair, a directory chair and a
computer liaison. These jobs all require
some amount of computer savvy. So,
PLEASE, roll up your sleeves like you’re
getting ready to go to work and dial me
or Mary Young or Joanne Puleo and
we’ll tell you what it entails and how
much we’d love to have you on the
board next year!
See you at the
luncheon.

Our 2017-18 Charities of Choice have been selected and over
the next several months there will be an article featuring each

JOURNEY’S END ANIMAL SANCTUARY is one of our designated charities for the year. It was founded in 1974, provides lifetime care and shelter for dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep, and birds that have been abused, neglected, or have special needs. Rather than emphasizing adoption, Journey’s End provides a homelike setting where animals can enjoy the remainder of their lives in a comfortable, loving atmosphere. The sanctuary is located in a rural area near Deland, FL. They currently have the capacity for over 300 animals. The sanctuary consist of a large home, plus a guest house, that have been customized for the animal residents plus several outbuildings such as sheds and horse stables.
In order to preserve Journey’s End, a board of directors was formed in August, 1988 and 501©3 non-profit status was granted in 1999. Initially the sanctuary was personally funded by its founder, Florence Thout. Donations and animal sponsorships currently provide operating funds. The founder of the sanctuary, Florence and her late husband Paul Thout worked as animal cruelty investigators for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department. They began their compassionate endeavor by bringing home some of the most needy animals.

Spokes on the GO! By Pat Booth
Hello ladies,
Firstly, so sorry the trip to the Flagler Mansion and Home didn't work out but we just didn't have enough participants. I do want to thank the ladies that signed up and wanted to participate. Maybe another time.
Now in March, we are going to do the Gadabout day trip that we had scheduled for October and was postponed by our hurricane friend, Irma. This is set for Saturday, March 24. We will depart the Interstate Mall (formerly called the Burlington Coat Factory mall and where the Christmas Tree Shop is located), about 9:15AM and begin our tour. From there we will go to the Russell Stover Candy distribution center and visit this chocolate lovers dream place. Yummmm! From there we will go over to beautiful Howey-in-the-Hills and have lunch at the famous Mission Inn. After lunch we will visit the very special German bakery in Yalaha and pick up our fresh hand made bread and maybe a strudel for later. From the bakery we will stop and visit the Lakeside Winery for a tour and of course, a wine tasting. Doesn't that sound like a fun day?
We will return to the Interstate Mall about 515P. The cost is $76.00 per person and includes transportation via deluxe motor coach, lunch, tax, tips, tours, a small loaf of bread and of course, even the drivers gratuity. The motor coach is also equipped with a restroom and can easily accommodate mobility accessories if required.
Please RSVP to me at 407-332-0579 as soon as possible so we can get this all confirmed and plan on having a wonderful day with our Spokes friends. We can also accommodate additional guests if you, as a Spokes member, wishes to bring a friend.

Heart Pillows A Central Florida Spokes Community Outreach Project
For many years Central Florida Spokes has made heart shaped pillows and
donated them to area hospitals that perform
heart surgery . This year will be no different
and we are planning a huge pillow stuffing
party for April 19th at Linda Cornell’s house.
We will have hundreds of pillows ready to be
stuffed with fiber fil and then stitched closed
by the helpful hands at the party. If you’ve
never attended at pillow stuffing party you
can’t imagine what fun you are missing. It’s a
whole day of visiting and talking and meeting
and eating and getting to know more Spokes
members while doing something really
important at the same time. Cindy Spechler is
an experienced pillow project director and she
can “show you the ropes” if you’ve never done
it before. Cindy can be contacted at 407-322-
4776 if you wish to help or just need information about the pillow project. Put
April 19th on your calendar and plan to come and help us stuff and sew and
continue this wonderful service. Bring a box of Poly Fil (can be bought at Joann’s
or Hobby Lobby) and a lunch dish to share to the party. Hope to see you there.

Heart Pillows Why Are They Important
It is critically important to
cough and take deep breaths
during the recovery from heart
surgery to reduce the risk of
pneumonia. Breathing deeply
and coughing can be difficult
after chest surgery because of
incisional pain. Heart pillows
offer sternum support and help
to give patients some comfort
after surgery.
