Feedback from BIGGA members is an essential element when designing Continue to Learn at BTME. Through the Members Choice surveys, BIGGA members actively select the education they would like to see included in the programme.

At Continue to Learn at BTME 2017 we will be featuring 250 hours of education that will be presented by more than 75 speakers.

A varied and valuable learning experience, Continue to Learn at BTME 2017 provides education for:

Continue to Learn Booking “Bundles”To help make training budgets stretch further and to provide greater flexibility, we have introduced Continue to Learn booking “Bundles”. These Bundles provide a discount when booking multiple education events and are only available to BIGGA Members.

The Bundles are offered in units of hours: 15, 24 and 33 hours. All of the eligible education events have an hour value listed in this brochure and on the booking form.

The Bundles are designed for individuals or several members of staff from the same golf club, to benefit from discount for booking multiple education events.

Turf Rewards can be used to purchase Bundles.

SEMINAR PRE-BOOKING FOR BIGGA MEMBERSBIGGA members can pre-book a place for any of the listed Continue to Learn Seminars. 70 seminar places will be made available for each of the sessions held on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 January.

• Pre-booked seminar tickets should be collected from the BIGGA Desk in the Queen’s Suite from Sunday 15 January 2017. Tickets will not be sent out.

• If you do not have your ticket there is no guarantee of a seat. • Pre-booking can only be made by, or for, BIGGA Members.

Once the 70 pre-book places have been allocated, there will be 40-50 seats remaining in the Seminar room that will be available, on a first come, first serve basis, to all visitors.

BTME ACTIVITY TRACKER The BTME Activity Tracker helps you track both the education events that you attend and the exhibitors that you visit during BTME.

If your badge is scanned it will create a list of events and exhibitors that you have visited. This list will be sent to you automatically by email shortly after BTME. This information can be used to claim CPD credits or as a reminder of the exhibitors and products that you were interested in.

To receive this service your individual email address will be required.

Please note: Not all exhibitors will have scanners.

Soil Microbiology and Compost Tea Research

This session will present scientific evidence demonstrating effects of compost tea on soil. The presentation will begin with a brief background of soil health and biological interactions. An introduction to experimental design will be presented, along with some key components that are required to accumulate scientific evidence. An overview of compost teas will be presented before identifying where positive, negative and no effects have been identified in the scientific literature. Current theory regarding the mechanisms of effects and potential risks will be discussed. Findings of three MSc thesis projects which were designed to assess effects of compost tea on soil biology. During Questions and Answers I would like to investigate key questions that the audience would like the scientific community to address.

• An understanding of the concept of soil health and the important roles of the microbial community

• Improved knowledge regarding what constitutes an empirical experimental design and the importance of scientific literature

Emotional Wellbeing

Looking after your mental health is as important as looking after your physical health.

This session will look at the stigma surrounding mental health difficulties and how to recognise signs in both yourself and others.

One in four people will suffer from mental health difficulties in their life with suicide being the biggest killer in males under 45. Sometimes we can feel like we may appear weak or alone if we admit to suffering from emotional difficulties.

Aiming to show that this is not the case and that by recognising early signs and getting support it can help to ensure that the problem does not become more severe. This session will provide practical advise of support services available to you as well as some mindfulness exercises to help keep you in good emotional health.

An Introduction to MindfulnessThis Masterclass, will introduce you to the key concepts of Mindfulness, which can be easily integrated into your daily life. During the day we will be engaging in various activities to foster mindfulness. These include formal meditation practices, as well as small things we can do in the midst of our daily lives, such as doing a routine task mindfully, taking a break, slowing down a little. In particular we’ll be using the body sensations and the breath, to help develop awareness. The aim of meditation is not to prevent the mind wandering off - which it will do, repeatedly - but to get into the habit of learning to check in with our experience. This in turn, can significantly reduce stress.

Learning Outcomes:

• What One Resists Persists. Much of our stress is exacerbated by our resistance to unpleasant experience, and what we resist tends to persist. So we are caught in a trap: the more we resist the more it persists! Mindfulness allows us to accept experience rather than reacting to it, which - paradoxically - allows us to let go of it. This lightens our load considerably, allowing us to get on with our life quite happily, even though it’s not completely sorted. (And will it ever be?)

• Coming to Our Senses. When we’re stressed we naturally try to do something about it, and this usually entails thinking - problem-solving. The trouble with this strategy is that it doesn’t work very well! In fact it’s more often than not counterproductive. Thinking about our stress keeps us stressed! An important aspect of mindfulness practice is to pay more attention to our senses - body sensations, sounds, sights, tastes - which brings us back to our actual experience in the moment. This greatly reduces stress.

• A Penny for Your Thoughts. Thoughts are one of the main causes of stress, trapping us in a loop in which we try to solve our problems, while the very act of trying to solve the problem keeps us tied to the problem. But what to do? We can’t just stop thinking! One of the skills you’ll learn is to notice thoughts as they arise in your mind and let them go. This is a liberating insight for people who attend the course.

• Your Buttons Don’t Have to be Pressed. Life, as you know, isn’t easy. Financial worries, issues around the way we earn our living and with work colleagues, difficulties in our relationships with family and friends - who doesn’t have them? Mindfulness doesn’t make everything nice and smooth and easy. Rather, it enables us to develop skills and inner resources to cope better - in fact to flourish - in the midst of the sometimes difficult and messy aspects of life. Learning how to be with unpleasant, difficult experiences without allowing them to ‘press our buttons’ is a key skill that you’ll learn.

• The Pleasure of Small Things. Not that life is unremittingly difficult either! There’s pleasure, enjoyment, beauty and love out there too. When we experience some difficulty in life, we have a tendency to focus on it, often to the exclusion of all else and especially the good things that are happening. We encourage you to widen your gaze a little and notice the small pleasures of life, which often go unremarked - the sun coming from behind a cloud and warming your face, a vase of yellow and blue flowers, a compliment from a friend, a job well done. We’re not trying to ‘think positive’, just trying to level the playing field. By noticing the good things and letting them affect us we’re working against what neuroscientists call the inbuilt ’negativity bias’ in the brain.

• The Tender Gravity of Kindness. In a way the word mindfulness gives a wrong impression. People often associate the mind with the head, with the brain, with cool, analytical thought. Mindfulness certainly isn’t that. It’s simply awareness, and not a cool and detached awareness either - it’s warm, gentle, and kind. Self kindness isn’t a weakness, in fact, scientists have discovered that fostering self kindness can help us to overcome difficulties and change behaviour in the long term.

Seminar 2 – How Much Do You Weigh? - Growth Rates and Managing Clip YieldDo you measure growth rate and clip yield? The short answer is generally yes. This may be as simple as asking the greenkeeper how many empties of the grass boxes were required or studying GDD. But can we introduce a more formal assessment of measuring growth rate by clip yield? Understanding growth response to GDD and growth response in relation to nutritional input can help refine the timing of fertiliser and PGR applications and improve the performance of the sward and control of organic matter. This seminar will explain why this happens and explores ways to maintain perennial grasses and convert Poa annua swards to fescue or bent, with case studies showing how greenkeepers convert thatch to fertiliser, humus and microbial food to recreate the correct conditions for perennial grass to grow. It will look at how hollow coring and heavy sand applications are mostly unnecessary and can actually contribute to annual grass growth.

This talk will in-clude details of the way the game is played at all levels and show ways in which data can be used to guide decisions.

Future Turf Managers Initiative (FTMI)

Launched in 2013, this event is aimed at up and coming greenkeepers who want to make the leap to Course Manager. Focusing on personal and professional development, rather than agronomy based subjects, the FTMI programme utilises the expertise of leading Course Managers, dynamic trainers and industry experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

FTMI 2017 will take place from 7-9 March. The deadline for applications for FTMI Class of 2107 is 31 October 2016.

Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year Award – Win the Toro Scholarship to the USA’s University of Massachusetts Winter Turf School, a trip to Toro’s HQ and a visit to the Golf Industry Show. One runner-up will receive a trip to Continue to Learn at BTME including four days of education, five nights hotel accommodation, travel and £125 expenses, plus a Toro Training voucher.
