Harrisdale Primary School NEWSLETTER Issue 2: 23rd February 2018 From the Principal … Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you for your attendance at the teacher/ parent infor- mation meetings over the past couple of weeks. Hopefully, those meetings should have given you a good sense of the learning programs and routines that will be established in your child’s class this year. If you have any specific concerns for your child, please organise to speak with your child’s teacher on a one-to-one basis, either in the teacher’s DOTT time or after school. Before school is not an appropriate time to try and meet with the teacher as they are preparing for the day and meeting and greeting their students and parents. Last Friday, we had the Department of Education , February census for 2018. Our census student enrolments stand at 1020! This is a staggering amount of students . Thank you for helping to settle them into their classes and establishing their morning routines so that they arrive at school by 8.30am. This will be an eleven week term with a few breaks scheduled in between. There is a Labour Day long weekend on Monday, March 5th so students will not attend on that day. The stu- dent will also have a six day break for Easter starting on Thursday, 29th March (School Development Day) . The stu- dents will return from the Easter break on Wednesday, 4th April. In Week 11 of first term, the school will undergo our first School Review. Gracefield Boulevard Bike Racks (behind LAT 13)

Earlier this week, one of our Year 6 students, Tobee, came to me with a concern she had over the bike rack area behind LAT 13 (Tobee supplied this picture). Tobee’s concerns were that people were not using the racks to park their bikes. They were leav-ing their bikes parked all over the area and that these bikes became a tripping hazard and made it very difficult for people to actually get to the bike racks to park their bikes. I thank Tobee for bringing this to my attention and ask that all bike riders use the bike racks provided. If we all do the right thing and park our bikes where they should be parked then this should prevent clutter and the risk of injury.

Tobee also requested racks for the scooters and as a result, we are now looking into purchasing some scooter racks to add to this area.

We thank Tobee for being a concerned and an active citizen of Harrisdale Primary. Well done!

Senior Merit Awards

LAT32 with Mr. Bryce… LAT32 was privileged to be the first senior assembly presenters' for 2018. Over the past couple of weeks our class has been learning about the importance of having a growth mindset. We decided to per-form Bruno Mars' "Don't Give Up" as it encourages everyone to adopt a growth mindset and give everything a go. Someone who has a growth mindset, believes they can get smarter, and understands that effort makes them stronger. They are always learning and improving; never giving up.

The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset, believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They believe they are either good at something, or they’re not, and that’s just the way it is.

In LAT32, we hope everyone adopts a growth mindset, keeps trying and never gives up.

A New Addition to our Playground... The junior students can now cook up a storm in their very own mud kitchen. Messy, unstructured play has many benefits. We look forward to watching our students cook, mix, pretend and play.

Additionally, our new Water Wall encourages our students to learn and experiment with water flow and movement as they manipulate the inter-changeable pipes. A great addition to our play.

Waste Wise

Wednesday Lunches

What is a Waste Wise Lunch?

Waste Wise Lunches are lunches that contain no throwaway packaging and produce no food waste.

Why have Waste Wise Wednesday Lunch?

By having a waste free lunch with no packaging waste, we can minimise litter, reduce waste to landfill, save money and develop healthy eating habits. The intention is to reduce the amount of waste we would normally throw away and look for alternative packaging for our food.

When?

Starting from next week, we would like students to start bringing Waste Wise Lunches every Wednesday. In Term 2 teachers will be counting how many students in each class bring a Waste Wise Lunch with no packaging. During assembly a prize will be awarded to the class with the high-est participation rate.

How do I provide a Waste Wise Lunch?

A typical homemade zero waste lunch is packed in a reusable lunch box or bag. The food is put in reusable containers rather than wrapped in disposable packaging. A drink is in a refillable bottle.

School Matters… Talk 4 Write ...

This year, we have introduced a new program called ‘Talk4Writing.’ The program explicitly teaches the compo-nents of writing using good quality literature as a model. A positive aspect of introducing Talk4Write, is that it

will not deviate from the delivery of quality practices already existing in our classrooms, only enhance it.

To engage the students in this new approach, we created a whole school hook using a star. Each year level, have been talking the text, using actions to retell the story and completing story maps which involves drawing

the text before writing. Students have been highly motivated and engaged in this approach.

Below are some photos of a Pre Primary and Year Two class engaging in this process.

P&C News … Hello Parents

What is a P&C I hear you ask.

The main purpose of the P&C is to support the school for the benefit of all students. Our committee consists of enthusiastic mums and dads who contribute their ideas and skills to the school in a variety of different ways.

All parents are encouraged to become members of the P&C as it offers parents the opportunity to be aware of what is happen-ing in our school and what is being discussed by the parents so they can contribute if they wish. The more opinions we have, the more rounded and helpful our combined suggestions, ideas and visions will be to the school community. To help facilitate this interaction members are emailed regular updates and occasional surveys about issues that have been raised. We also encourage parents to send ideas and comments to our email address: [email protected]

The proposed meeting dates for 2018 are as follows:

7th March 1st August 4th April 5th September 2nd May 7th November 6th June 5th December

All meetings are held in the staffroom at 7pm. The aim is to keep the meetings to finish NO LATER than 8:30pm (generally we are wrapped well before this time). As you can see there are only 8 general meetings. This is around 8 – 12 hours out of your time for the year, but I can guarantee the benefit you will gain from being involved in the school outweighs this time. Many of the outgoing committee are working parents, both fulltime and part-time, and give whatever time and support they can offer. There is no pressure to attend each meeting, or be an over active member, but without some activity, we have no PnC. We would love to see you there. Please remember your $1.00.

The membership form and office bearer form can be accessed via the following links: http://www.harrisdaleps.wa.edu.au/resources/pc-membership-form/

http://www.harrisdaleps.wa.edu.au/resources/pc-office-bearer-form/ If you intend on coming, please complete either or both forms in advance. We will have copies available on the night. If you wish to read up some more about PnCs in Western Australian schools, you can do so here: http://www.wacsso.wa.edu.au/

Some big ticket items we are keen to contribute toward this year include: play-ground art/games (http://www.projectplaygrounds.com.au); ceiling fan for the undercover area; drone for the sports department (educational and community purposes). Leavers shirts for our 2018 Graduates are now available and ready to order. Order will close off on Friday 2nd March.

The order form can be accessed via the following link: http://www.harrisdaleps.wa.edu.au/resources/leavers-shirt-order-form-2018/

Fundraising

We have kicked off our fundraising for the year with Bakers Delight Harrisdale. Help us raise money for our school by purchasing hot cross buns! Please see the attached order form for more details.
