The ambitious English jazz label Edition continues to find exciting new talent and carefully develop their existing stable of highly acclaimed artists. This month, Norwegian pianist, composer and leader Eyolf Dale makes his Edition début with Wolf Valley. It’s a bold and inventive album with a rich and expansive soundscape. Dale clearly intends to make his mark here and solidify his position as a significant voice in the jazz world. The works of composer Terry Riley have an appeal that extends far beyond the confines of classical music. On their new Channel Classics album Four Four Three, the young, talented Ragazze Quartet joins forces with jazz trio Kapok and others to explore and re-work a selection of Riley’s mesmerizing compositions. Favorite symphonies by Tchaikovsky are the focus of acclaimed Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko’s latest release for Onyx. Under Petrenko’s baton, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra brings out all the romance and Russian flavor that lie at the heart of Tchaikovsky’s music. GRAMMY®-nominated baritone Florian Boesch presents a fourth album of Schubert songs for Onyx. Paired with pianist Malcolm Martineau, Boesch presents a recital program that explores a wide range of the composer’s lieder output. Russian cellist Pavel Gomziakov performs Haydn on a rare Stradivarius cello from 1725 — an instrument that has been locked away in a museum for centuries. Haydn is also front and center on pianist Shai Wosner’s latest effort. His recording pairs concertos and capriccios by two very different composers, contrasting Haydn’s classical period formality with the avant-garde modernism of Hungarian Geörgy Ligeti. The Opera Rara label has unearthed yet another gem. Leoncavallo’s Zazà is rarely staged today, in spite of being popular enough at one time to inspire several film adaptations, including a 1923 movie starring Gloria Swanson. Maurizio Benini leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra in an exciting recording of Leoncavallo’s ‘other’ operatic masterpiece.

In 2015, the harmonia mundi group was purchased by [PIAS] — one of Europe’s top independent music companies. Integration of harmonia mundi's existing operations into [PIAS] has been happening behind the scenes since last May. This month marks the US office's official re-launch, and with it comes a totally new look and a renewed focus on our core strengths — the fantastic labels and artists we represent and our unconditional love of music.

Newly-branded as [PIAS] harmonia mundi usa, we've entered into a partnership with RED to handle our sales and distribution. The Los Angeles office will complement RED’s efforts, helping to market and promote key releases and artists as well as maintain and build their industry and media presence.

The revamping doesn't stop there. To allow us to focus more effectively on important projects and developing artists, our label roster has also been reduced. We’ll now be representing only 27 labels — 6 from the harmonia mundi family and 21 partner labels. We're wholeheartedly embracing the wisdom of 'less is more.' The revised list of our label partners through RED is available on our website, www.pias-hmusa.com.

Some things will remain unchanged. For those of you who have come to depend upon our data support and asset delivery, those services will continue to be provided by the LA office. We’ll also maintain our existing website and continue to keep everyone apprised of press and promotions. And of course, our top-notch publicity and media service department will keep doing what it does best.

Four Four Three is a program of music by minimalist American composer Terry Riley by the Ragazze Quartet. In C, also featuring Slagwerk Den Haag, has an enormous dynamic range. Long, melodic lines combine with short rhythmic motifs, producing an effect of both tranquil contemplation and pulsating explosiveness. Sunrise of the planetary dream collector was originally written for string quartet. But the Ragazze Quartet invited the jazz trio Kapok to make a new arrangement together. The mix of string quartet, horn, electric guitar and percussion, all expanded with electronic effects, offers a rich pallete of timbres. Ragazze Quartet bring forth the groovy rhythm and whimsical improvisatory character of this music in readings you have probably never heard before and will not hear anywhere else.

Employed as "musician in ordinary for lutes and voices" at the court of Charles I, English composer William Lawes (1602-1645) is most admired today for his sublime suites for viol consort. His less familiar solo repertoire for lyra viol is performed here by Richard Boothby on the best preserved instrument of the period (Richard Meares, c. 1647-1725) which is now part of the Kessler Collection in the museum of the Royal College of Music, London.

Onyx Classics presents the début recording of a rare, recently restored 1725 Stradivarius cello that has been locked away in a museum in Lisbon for centuries. Pavel Gomziakov, a protégé of Maria João Pires, performs Haydn's Cello Concertos in C & D as well as the wonderful slow movement from the composer's Symphony No.13, which has a large solo cello role. Also included is Gomziakov's own arrangement of the Adagio from the C major violin concerto. The sound that this wonderful instrument produces is rich, mellow, powerful and a unique voice and a superb example of Stradivarius's late, golden period.

Leoncavallo's Zazà is based on the smash hit play by Pierre Breton and Charles Simon. They story centers around Zazà, a Parisian music hall singer, and it traces the collapse of her relationship after she discovers her lover is married. Featuring infectious dance tunes and colorful orchestration, it is a far cry from the harsh, low-life realism of Leoncavallo's Pagliacci. Yet, where the composer’s first opera remains one of the most performed operatic works today, Zazà has all but fallen out of the repertory - despite several film adaptations including a 1923 version starring Gloria Swanson. Opera Rara’s revival of Zazà is based on Leoncavallo’s own 1919 revision of his score which has been carefully researched by Italian opera specialist, Maurizio Benini. He leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra in their third collaboration with Opera Rara. Taking on the challenging soprano role for the first time is Ermonela Jaho who is joined by Riccardo Massi as her lover Milio, Stephen Gaertner as her onstage partner and former lover Cascart and Patricia Bardon as her mother Anaide.

Norwegian pianist and composer Eyolf Dale burst onto the jazz scene in 2008. Wolf Valley is his fifth album as a leader. His previous solo albums demonstrated a steep progression in skill and ambition that has reached a pinnacle on Wolf Valley. Eyolf has a strong classical technique allied to a large sonic soundscape. He’s equally at home with sweeping runs utilizing the whole dynamic range of the piano as with introspective, spacious chords. His music is bold, inventive and always seems to take the listener just where they want to go.
