Charlotte’s Web Author Card

E.B. White

(July 11, 1899 – October 1, 1985)

Biography

Elwyn Brooks White was an American writer well-known for his fascinating and timeless children’s books. White was born in Mount Vernon, New York. He served in the army before going to college. White graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1921. He published his first article in The New Yorker magazine in 1925, then joined the staff in 1927 and continued to contribute for around six decades. In the late 1930s, White turned his hand to children’s fiction. White died from Alzheimer’s disease at his home in North Brooklin, Maine. He is buried in the Brooklin Cemetery beside his wife Katharine, who died in 1977.

Charlotte’s Web Illustrator Card

Garth Williams

(April 16, 1912 – May 8, 1996)

Biography

Garth Montgomery Williams was an American artist who came became an illustrator of children's books. Many of the books he illustrated have become classics of American children's literature. Garth Williams was born in New York City in 1912. He grew up on farms in New Jersey and Canada. In 1922 he and his family moved to the United Kingdom. He studied architecture and worked for a time as an architect’s assistant. But when the Great Depression came he made up his mind to be an artist. He began his studies at Westminster School of Art in 1929. In 1945, he received his first commission as an illustrator. The author was E. B. White, the book was Stuart Little. In 1951 he illustrated Charlotte’s Web (1952); his eldest child Fiona, a toddler when the family escaped the Blitz, was his model for Fern Arable. At 81, he estimated he had illustrated ninety-seven books. At 84 he died at his home in Marfil. He is buried in Aspen, Colorado.

Write a short and creative tale about one of Charlotte’s cousins. You can either pretend you are Charlotte telling a bedtime story to Wilbur about the cousin or you can pretend you are the cousin telling the story to Charlotte. Be sure to make-up a name and have some distinguishing personality and physical traits.
