Using the Course Catalog

Harlandale ISD offers a variety of courses that will prepare students for high school, college, military and/or the workforce. The course catalog is designed to give both students and parents an overview of the courses offered at Harlandale ISD. Each course entry includes a course description. Information to help in the decision-making process for next school year is also provided as well as information that is important for student success with middle school and beyond. During 8th grade, every Harlandale ISD student must select an Academic Endorsement course of study for high school. There are 5 endorsements of study to choose from. Endorsements may be changed during the course of the student's high school career and students may graduate with multiple endorsements.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Harlandale Independent School District does not discriminate on the basis of sex, handicap, race, color, national origin and takes steps to ensure that the lack of English language skill will not be a barrier in its education programs, services, activities or employment as required by Title IX, Section 504 and Title VI.

Courses listed in the 2021-2022 Harlandale ISD Course Catalog are preliminary offerings. Courses listed

may or may not actually be offered during the 2020-2021 school year. Course offerings are subject to change due to student selection, availability of staff and facilities and changes in state course requirements.

Opportunity for middle school students to earn high school level credits – CTE, Dual Language and Algebra 1 The courses in this catalog that do not begin with a 0 are courses that will award students high school credit upon successful competition. It is important to note that these grades do count towards a student’s overall GPA and class ranking in high school. For many students, final graduation placement is impacted by high school credits earned as early as 6th grade so it is important to do well in these courses and establish a strong foundation before entering high school. Opportunity for middle school students to earn college level credit - Advanced Placement (AP) The College Board AP exams are given once a year in May. Each three-hour exam covers college level content for a specific course and is given during the school day. The tests consist of both multiple choice and free- response questions. Scores range from 1-5, with most colleges awarding credit for scores of 3 or higher. https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/home. Students enrolled in the dual language program at Leal Middle School will have the opportunity to take the AP Spanish Language test at the end of 8th grade.

Opportunity for middle school students to be eligible for college classes in high school. – TSI2 The Texas Success Initiative Assessment is a state-legislated exam to determine student readiness for success in college. The TSI2 Assessment is required for dual credit and Early College High School classes. The TSI tests skills in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Harlandale ISD provides the TSI Assessment to students that require the test for their academic program at no cost. Students choosing to apply and are accepted to STEM Early College High School will take the TSI2 during the summer before entering into 9th grade.

Online Course Selection- ITCCS Tx My Zone 1. Choose Carefully! Schedule changes will be permitted in unique situations and with administrative approval. 2. Courses totaling eight periods will be chosen. 3. Choose courses with the assumption that all current courses will be passed. 4. Alternate electives must be selected as they are used in case of conflicts in course selections. A minimum of two alternates must be selected. Students are reminded that some course offerings are tentative and are dependent upon sufficient enrollment or other extenuating circumstances. 5. Draft choice slips are to be taken home for parents review and signature. Parent signature is part of the endorsement plan 6. Students who do not submit a choice slip will be assigned courses by the counseling department.

Earn up to 4 high school credits through the

Texas Pre-Freshman Engineering Program (PREP)

The Pre-freshman Engineering Program (PREP) is an academically rigorous mathematics-based summer enrichment program conducted at several college and university campuses in San Antonio, as well as, across the State of Texas and Nation. Year 2, 3 and 4 requirements: Successful completion of Year 1, 2, or 3 for the next PREP Year (students may not skip a PREP year), parent/guardian permission, passing all classes in school, 80 or above in most recent grading cycle in math, science, and English, and satisfactory conduct grades. PREP identifies middle and high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and helps prepare those students for advanced studies and careers in those fields by providing a challenging academic program that emphasizes abstract reasoning and problem solving, and exposes participants to careers through speakers and field trips. Students who are currently active in the program or were in the program can submit to their counselor their documentation from the program. Students are awarded elective high school credit for their work in the program and the course(s) show up on the final transcript of the student. PLEASE NOTE that the grades submitted from PREP do NOT count towards the overall GPA of a student.

Mathematics

0620 Grade 6 Mathematics 0623 Grade 6 IS Mathematics The primary focal areas in Grade 6 are number and operations; proportionality; expressions, equations, and relationships; and measurement and data. Students use concepts, algorithms, and properties of rational numbers to explore mathematical relationships and to describe increasingly complex situations. Students use concepts of proportionality to explore, develop, and communicate mathematical relationships. Students use algebraic thinking to describe how a change in one quantity in a relationship results in a change in the other. Students connect verbal, numeric, graphic, and symbolic representations of relationships, including equations and inequalities. Students use geometric properties and relationships, as well as spatial reasoning, to model and analyze situations and solve problems. Students communicate information about geometric figures or situations by quantifying attributes, generalize procedures from measurement experiences, and use the procedures to solve problems. Students use appropriate statistics, representations of data, and reasoning to draw conclusions, evaluate arguments, and make recommendations. While the use of all types of technology is important, the emphasis on algebra readiness skills necessitates the implementation of graphing technology.
