Livestock Identification Process

Paper Livestock ID Affidavits will still

be required by our county office.

We will be using one size visible EID tags in two colors for all market beef, market swine, market lamb, meat goat, feeder calves, showing at the State Fair or AKSARBEN. Families will be re-quired to submit a Breeding Nomination Card for all breeding animals showing at State Fair. Breeding Nomination Cards will have a $2 nomination fee.

For breeding goats and breeding sheep the scrapie tag identification number will serve as the official identifica-tion. For breeding beef a tattoo will serve as the official identification for State Fair and AKSARBEN. Bang tattoos are not an accepted form of identification. Registration papers are required. DNA and breeding card verification will be required for all livestock animals showing at State Fair or AKSARBEN. County-only animals will use regular 4-H tags (no EID tag). There will be no mandatory weigh-in days or group tagging.

Through a four-way partnership with the Nebraska Department of Agri-culture, the Nebraska State Fair, the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, and FFA, we are able to offer the EID tags at no charge to families for 2016. The cost of DNA is $6 per entry. There will be a total limit of nominations by individuals including both 4‐H and FFA entries to help level the playing field for those youth who are in both organizations. Entry Limits‐ Beef (10) Lambs (20) Swine (40) Goats (20). Youth will have until August 10 (State Fair pre‐entry deadline) to select whether they are showing their animal in 4‐H or FFA. This could mean they show one organization at the county level and one organization at State Fair. They cannot switch between State Fair and AKSARBEN. Families will be able to select which animal entries they have chosen to show at State Fair in a dropdown menu in the ShoWorks program that you will use to pre-enter your livestock. All nominated animals will be automatically listed as a choice option when pre-entering via ShoWorks.

*All animal affidavit forms are available in our office or online for

Livestock Quality Assurance

beef, swine, dairy, poultry or rabbits must

have quality assurance training. The last

training is June 6th at 9 AM in Beaver City at

the fairgrounds. The other option is to com-

plete the training online at http://4h.unl.edu/

qualityassurance . There is a $5.00 fee to take the online training. All

Livestock Quality Assurance training must be completed by July 1st.

Dine- A- Mite

Honored Harlan County Homemaker Club

Summer 2016

On November 4, 1949 at 2 pm five ladies—Mrs. Ethel McNitt, Mrs. Gertrude Gardels, Mrs. Velma Paxson, Mrs. Elva Ziegler & Miss Helen Rohwer the county extension agent met at the home of Mrs. Florence Rumbaugh for the newly formed homemaker club “Dine-A-Mite”.

Some of the early members were Tena Whitehead, Phyllis Schroder, LaVeva White-head, Mrs. B.O. Waggoner, Pearl Bash, Velma Davis, Irene Dixon, Dorothy Dixon and Leila Dixon to name a few.

A memory in November 1964 was meeting to do the yearbook. The day was spent making yearbooks and watching the JFK assassination news on TV, this was quite a memory.

Members of the club who received the Great Nebraska Family Award are: Ed and Corrine Rebman in 1999, Dee and Ruby Hardin in 2001, John and Juanita Ulrichson in 2002, Paul and Myrene Ulrichson in 2004.

The club helps with the annual Homemaker Christmas Event and Scholarship Luncheon.

In the good old days the club was filled with children of all ages but they have since grown up but now occasionally a grandchild attends.

In January the husbands and guest are invited for a soup supper, we have a birthday party in May and get to eat out. In September the men and guests are again invited to dine out with us and for Christmas we have a carry in dinner. The ladies always enjoy the cooking lessons as we have to live up to our name “Dine-A-Mite”.

Current members are Ruby Hardin, Myrene Snyder, Alice Fouts, Becky Seyler, Jan Rebman and Juanita Ulrichson.

The family of Lynette Brown created a Memorial cookbook of Lynette’s favorite recipes.

The proceeds have gone to support the Harlan County 4-H, the Harlan County Homemakers, the Harlan County Foun-

dation, 4-H Camp and the Ag Center. Please call the Extension office to reserve your copy now: 308-928-2119

For those of you that have previously placed your orderyou may pick them up at the Harlan County Extension office —

new copies have just arrived from Leroy and his family. These make great gifts for special occasions!
