Herald
Principal’s Message The Holiday Season is upon us and I want to take this opportunity to thank the Harding community for all of
their support during the first half of this school year. This is a busy time of year for everyone! On behalf of the
Harding Middle School staff we want to wish you a very Happy Holidays.
This is also a time to celebrate the accomplishment of your child during the first quarter and to sit with them and
set academic and personal goals for the rest of the school year. The New Year is a time to reflect on past accom-
plishments and to create an action plan for future successes. We are very proud of the 89 students who made the
Distinguished Honor Roll in the first quarter. These students earned an “A” in all of their classes. 145 students
attainted Honor Roll in the first quarter. Honor roll recipients had an overall Grade Point Average of 3.5 or bet-
ter. Finally, we had 110 students who landed on the Merit Roll List, meaning that they attained an overall GPA
of 3.0 or better. The names of these students appear in this newsletter. Please join me in celebrating their suc-
cess!
Finally, we look forward to the beginning of the winter sport season. Refer to the Harding website for schedules
and directions to away game. Please come out and support our Boys and Girls Basketball teams, Wrestling
squad and Cheerleaders this season.
Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season!
Regards,
Keith Ahearn
Thank-you to our counselor, Mrs. Ad-
kins and Ms. Ndanema, her intern
from Cleveland State for posting the
bulletin board at the Board of Educa-
tion. Our bulletin board will be posted
until the end of January.
Thank-you also to Yara Saad and
Emma Ours for volunteering their time
to assist Mrs. Adkins in the prepara-
tion of the bulletin board pieces.

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT:
It’s hard to believe the holiday season is already upon us. As we move into December, inclement weather is
inevitable here in Northeast Ohio so this is a good time to inform you that the State of Ohio has reduced the
number of calamity or snow days available to districts for this school year from five to three. We will have to
be very judicious this winter in our decision on whether or not to close school for bad weather. As always, par-
ents have the option to keep their child home if they disagree with a decision to keep school open and the day
will count as an excused absence. Please call the School Closing hotline at 227-5708, check the district web
site, www.lakewoodcityschools.org, or the local TV and radio stations to check whether school is open or not.
Also a reminder that when it does snow, please be sure to clear your sidewalks so that our walking students
have a safe route to school. Too many times when sidewalks are not shoveled, students resort to walking in the
streets, which is obviously a very dangerous situation. Let’s help keep our kids safe!
On a lighter note, December is a prime time to sample some of the many talented music groups and programs
throughout the district. Winter concerts from the orchestras, bands and choirs at the middle schools and high
school will be held at the Civic a few days a week from now until Winter Break. The elementary schools will
be showcasing their students’ musical talents as well. For dates and times, please visit the Performing Arts
page on the district web site or visit the individual school web page for more information.
Happy Holidays to all!

Math Practice
Here is a fun way for your child to practice
the achievement test math standards:
“Study Island.” This software program is
available to access on both home and
school computers. Students were given a
username and password. Check with your
child, since his/her math teacher may possi-
bly give some extra credit for using the pro-
gram.
Movin’ On
Social Studies classes will be working
on Passports to the World. In the w e e k s
ahead, your sixth-grade traveler will
take his/her passport and move on to a
different classroom for social studies.
This teacher will present an exciting new
region of the world to be explored! Not to
worry…most teachers are the same ones
that your child already has in a different
subject area.
Supplies
Would you like a great stocking-stuffer
idea? How about a replenished supply of
pencils, markers, paper, folders, and pens?
When students are prepared with sup-
plies, we’ll all get a gift when they
perform better in class.
Thank You
Our wonderful PTSA provided a deli-
cious dinner of soup, salad, sandwiches,
and desserts on the first evening
of conferences. We are indeed thankful
for their kindness, consideration, and
hard work. We enjoyed every tasty morsel!
Happy New Year
The sixth-grade staff would like to wish all of
you a very Happy New Year! We are excited
about working with you and your children in
2011!

Seventh Grade News In Ms. Pollner’s social studies class, we com-
pleted our study of ancient Greece in early De-
cember and moved on to the Romans. Many
of our activities require group work, so daily
attendance is very important.
In Ms. Pollner’s language arts class, students
completed their study of Greek mythology
with an independent project due on December
1. Students also wrote a second narrative and
a comparison essay. Next students read the
play A Christmas Carol and either
viewed the play in class or went down-
town to see the play performed at
Playhouse Square on December 3. Reading
logs are due every Monday.
Happy Holidays to all. Thank you for a suc-
cessful student-led conference. Those who at-
tended were rewarded with both an opportu-
nity to hear what their students expected of
themselves, as well as their accomplishments
thus far. Keeping a copy of the short/long
term goals posted in a common area
will help keep everyone focused and
sharp throughout the quarter.
The push is on in Mathematics to have all stu-
dents up to par and ready to tackle the OAA in
the spring with great success. We are learning
how to use integers to solve equations,
as well as use ratios to scale propor-
tions up and down. Students do have a
binder with notes, quizzes, and homework that
you may want to peruse periodically.
Again, enjoy the holidays with warm wishes to
all for wonderful family time together.
Eighth Grade News
Creativity shines in the eighth grade!
While studying the Revolutionary War, some
classes created superhero comic books with
the help of Mr. Costello. The books were in-
formative, entertaining and imaginative. Stu-
dents will be finishing up the revolution with
projects such as patriotic speeches.
Language arts students continue to work on
story elements through short stories and
novels. Essays are being developed
and will lead to research papers on
WWII topics. The information gained from
their research will be shared with the class
and help give students the background knowl-
edge to read the play The Diary of Anne
Frank.
Math students are constructing and compar-
ing box and whisker plots and scatter plots.
They are also learning how to collect
data for surveys. Science students
are in constant motion! Their motion
unit involves toy cars, rides on the
hover board and building simple machines.
They will also be calculating forces and ac-
celeration.
We hope your child is able to join in the
eighth grade Washington, D.C. trip on May
11th through May 13th. Deposits of
$125 are being collected now through
January 7th. Participation in this trip
is on a first come basis, so please get
your money in early!
