COMMODORE’S
COMMENTS
ARTICLE III Purposes
The purposes of the Club shall be to promote sailing in all its branches; to help
promote a code of ethics and safety for the waterways; to provide instruction in
boat handling and seamanship; to form a social and activity nucleus for individuals
and their families interested in yachting; to develop an active relationship with
other sailing organizations; and to foster the Corinthian spirit of good fellowship.
The Club will construct and maintain such facilities as are required to accomplish
these purposes. The Club is not and shall not be maintained for pecuniary profits.
Portions of this section of the HIYC constitution are quoted in almost every
board meeting as we navigate the future of our club. When NSF asked the
board to approve extending sail camp for the 2020 season to six weeks we re-
alized that while sail camp does align with the purpose of our club it also im-
pacts the active membership and on occasion causes some friction between
members.
We stretched out this decision in order to ensure that all of the membership
had an opportunity to voice their support as well as their concerns. NSF and
Leadership Academy gave presentations at two quarterly meetings and were
always available to answer questions. They listened to the concerns and have
not ignored them. I believe the 2020 camp season will be very successful and
further believe that many of our members concerns will be addressed and min-
imized. Only time will tell.
One thing I take away from all of our discussions: Our membership as well as
the HIYC Homeowners Association almost unanimously supports the HIYC
sail camps at four weeks, and the camps have historically made a lasting posi-
tive impact on the campers who have attended.

The Year in Pictures
It seems that it has become a tradition for the December Anchorline that I do a year in pictures. This
year was difficult due to the number of events our Sea Scouts were involved in. But it does give a bit
of a representation of the year with these wonderful youth.

Carol Owen has been a member of HIYC since 2015
and spent a year volunteering with the Sea
Scouts. Mike has been sailing with her on Old Hickory
since 2016. Mike’s first seagoing experiences were as
a diver, a sport he enjoyed for 15 years. Later, find-
ing that he preferred being on the water to being in it,
he joined the Henley (England) sailing club, began
sailing a Wayfarer, and soon started racing SuperNo-
vas (a single-handed dinghy similar in size to a La-
ser). Mike later obtained Royal Yachting Association
qualifications as a skipper of large yachts and as a
race coach. Dominic and Jonathan both went through the RYA’s junior regional training programs and com-
peted nationally in the U.K. and internationally, in world championships in France, the Netherlands, and the
U.K. We look forward to racing at Harbor Island as well as to sailing our Tayana Vancouver 42 in St. Peters-
burg, FL.

Not to be confused with the PHRF Winter Series, the Schmid Frostbite Series is the Laser
Fleet's component of the HIYC Winter festivities. The series is named for Rob Schmid, a com-
mitted sailor who helped to build the Laser fleet at HIYC and PPYC. Rob is pictured here on the
old inflatable runabout, running the Race Committee, circa 1990.
During the Winter, the temperatures on Old Hickory Lake drop and the wind picks up. Because
of this, only the bravest (craziest?) souls with good wet or dry suits dare to compete in the
Frostbite. This series runs on Sundays from early January through the end of February. Suit
up and come join the fun!

Hi There! We are Kevin Willey and Jen, Jackson and Maggie Mayo.
Kevin is long time Nashville resident anchored deeply in the water
with a lifetime of boating experience. He has been yearning to get
back in the wind and away from motorized water sports. Kevin has
recently retired from a long career as a project manager and has
established his own handyman business as Finisher615. Jen relocat-
ed to Nashville in 2004 after having lived primarily in the North with
some extended residences abroad and is the Aftercare Director at St
Joseph School where her children attend school. We are looking for-
ward to getting to know everyone at HIYC and learning the ropes!
Matt and Brittany Haskell live in East Nashville with their two boys
- Benny and Owen. Matt practices law with his father Dan at GSRM
Law in Nashville, and Britt teaches nursing at Vanderbilt. Matt’s
from Hendersonville and Brittany is from Rapid City, South Dakota.
He’s a longtime sailer, including many races at HIYC, while Britt is
new to sailing and looks forward to a new adventure with the
boys.
Stuart Eses,
Hello HIYC, again!!! Thank you for welcoming me back! Currently still
working in Minnesota but have my official home address in franklin and
making more effort to be here in Tennessee on a regular basis. I missed
HIYC and wanted to come back!
Crystal and I are getting married March 8, 2020 and making our
home in Franklin.
As for sailing!... During sailing season in the summer while in Min-
nesota, I joined a local club and learned how to sail Ensigns on
Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, sailed a 38’ mono on Lake Superior in
the apostle islands over the summer, and scheduled a 38’ mono for
the Bvi honeymoon in March 2020.
